    This movie makes me sick. The wife says, "What am I supposed to do? Be a doormat?" And Miss Clara doesn't even contradict her! Not only that, it assumes the husband is being a jerk purely because "the devil made me do it." Um. This woman needs some basic theology. Watch Veggie Tales or listen to some aio. Seriously, that's enough to let you know people make bad decisions on their own sometimes, why is she so all fire certain it's the devil? Then the WIFE apologizes to God. The wife who's being yelled at by her cheating, criminal husband has something to apologize for the but the husband is just a VICTIM of the devil!?!?!

      I saw this movie in the theatre, and the fact that I AGREED WITH THE WIFE APOLOGISING speaks volumes. I was also married to an abuser at the time, I ended up leaving him and we are now divorced.
      But yeah no, telling wives to be submissive to abusers is (not only sexist for one), just the perfect gaslighting bullshit to flip it around and make it the wife's fault when her husband is abusive. "You're husband's a jerk? Well are you submitting to him like the Bible says? Yes? Well you must not be submitting enough." It will still somehow be her fault. Like, the fuck?
      "God hates divorce."
      I generally respond with, "Yeah? Wouldn't God hate abuse more?"

    As a Christian myself, I can say this movie is horrendous. Everything Kevin said is true, and also I think the message it's delivering is plain wrong.
    It's telling spouses NOT to confront each other, and just go in a closet and Pray, and it'll all be fixed. Now, Prayer is extremely powerful and should be used consistently in a situation, however we need to become comfortable with confrontation in marriages. Confrontation jerks the slack out of people. My Wife had to do it to me a few times.

    While I also agree with you that the overall point of the film is valid, it has the same problem as fire proof. Instead of trying to work with the spouse in some way, they are simply working at them. It's a strange one-sided approach to relationships that make me worried.

      Eh, it wasn’t for me. It felt really unfocused, and I don’t think they parodied Christian movies as well as they could have. I’m not even sure I agree with the underlying message.
      On a side note, when I was in college, I bought the movie and watched it with my brother when we snuck into my Evangelical Christian parents’ house when they were gone. We accidentally left it there when we were done. When they got back, they assumed it was a Christian movie they had forgotten about, and they put it in their Christian movie shelf. My brother’s still in contact with them, and he tells me that it’s still there to this day (2 years later).

    My Aunt made* me watch this with her, thinking I would like it and be encouraged by it as she absolutely loved it, but the whole time all I could think about was your review and I had so much trouble not laughing or reacting in certain parts that were just so bad. It was so long, I was concerned it wouldn't actually end. And that one line after Liz is so happy about the foot massage and ice cream and she says "There must be a God" or something like that, I wanted to stand up and yell a little. What kind of a line is that in a Christian movie?? I'm still mad. Thank you for doing these reviews, Kevin. Sincerely. They're not just funny, they're unflinchingly honest about things that desperately need to be looked at critically.
    *she didn't force me but I couldn't come up with a good reason to get out of it.

      Miss-Jazz-DaFunk Well, so far as "unrealistic" situations, really, who cares? Movies are supposed to be realistic, since when? As for the humor though, that's fine, people have different senses of humor. I don't think most of the jokes were objectively bad though, while there definitely were some.

      @saygoodnightkevin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      elizabethashley42 I had a joke about that in my first edit, but it wasn't funny enough to keep in. It was something about how her War Room is bigger than some people's whole house....in fact it's bigger than my whole house! I live in a studio apartment! lol.

    • @spencerandersen271
      @spencerandersen271 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean, I've heard some Eastern Orthodox Christians have an icon corner, and some Catholics/Anglicans may hang a crucifix in their apartment/house. But that's not much of a war room, now is it?
      Wonder if this verse was the inspiration for the movie:
      When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
      But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
      Mt. 6:5-6

    • @reviewtechUSSR1
      @reviewtechUSSR1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Spencer Andersen Yup, being an Eastern Orthodox Christian we have corners of icons and incense. It's a place we go to give reverence to God, and read from our prayer books. :P Look up a bit more about it if you want, I highly suggest going to an Eastern Orthodox church. :)

    I'm curious what you'd think of "To Save a Life."
    It's probably the only Christian movie I like, but I haven't seen it in awhile so my view of it could change if I see it again.
    I just remember it dealing with some heavy subjects and tackling them fairly well.
    It does have the typical Ah-Ha moment and the acting, from what I remember, wasn't that great. It did seem to show that everything doesn't immediately change when you come to God and life will be tough.
    I don't know, but it seems like that might be one you'd enjoy somewhat.
