    I remember one movie where getting into a closet and praying solved the character's problems.
    It was called "Carrie". That ended really well.

      Jack Rose Presents I don't know how to say my opinion, since I haven't seen any of those movies, but I don't know how underrated a sequel like that can be if everyone is saying it fails to even be creepy. That's what makes a well-made horror movie really good.

    • @thefirstbourne149

      ***** Sweet. Now I either got to see it for the fun of it, or I watch the original first and then see this for the fun of it. It does have so bad-it's-good qualities right? The sequel?

      You know the Simpsons episode about Joan of Arc where she is on trial with God being her witness telling he motivated her to liberate France of the English? And the Englishman says to God "What? You told me to conquer France for England", with God saying it was not planned them being in the same room once

      This movie reminds me of the time I walked into my closet and prayed for the Taurus Demon in Dark Souls to just fucking drop dead and then it did.... Oh wait, no it didn't because God doesn't work that way and this movie has no idea what the heck it's talking about! Everyone knows if you want to solve your problems you've got to sell your soul in exchange for some form of enchanted object that will eventually backfire, not pray in a closet! Or, in extreme cases, just bitch about it on an internet forum with a listed address and very specific details. I'm sure that'll go great!
      ..............

      You know what would be a trip.
      Is if the old woman was just senile, or suffering from dementia the whole time.
      It's revealed that she has gone complete Howard Hughes and everything the wife character believes comes crashing down.
      the Husband had cheated on her way before he was going to with the woman in this movie, so the part with him being stopped by divine intervention was B.S. because the wife imagined it out of denial.
      The woman he cheated with got pregnant and she shows up with the kid.
      The wife has a complete breakdown, refuses to wash her feet ever again,
      and we end with the Old Woman put in a home, going crazy because lack of a closet.

      That scene was just dumb. Really wished we had some random neighbor tell her to shut up or show them calling the cops for disturbing the peace or something. Now that would've been the funniest part of the movie. I remember people in the theater, not reacting the way the canned audience here did, but I could remember people nodding and silently rooting for her and finding it funny when she went out into the street.

    In my personal accounts of being a Christian (for lack of a better term,) sitting around, doing nothing, and simply believing God will solve all your problems is pretty much the worst thing you can do.
    I watched my mother whithered away for three years, believing God would heal her, while doing nothing for herself. She died of a heart attack late 2013.
    I saw as my sister, who could have any man she wanted, prayed for a boyfriend. She then met the man who would become her husband. Something which wouldn't have happened had she not actively pursued the idea. They're married now, and my nephew/our dad's first grandchild, is expected some time this month.
    In addition, I met the woman who may very well be my future wife, after praying I would meet someone, then approaching the camerawoman at my sister's wedding.
    Seems to me, God prefers it when people actively pursue their own prayers. Not every time, mind you, but there seems to be a trend, there.
    Also, this movie is shit.

    • @jekblom123
      @jekblom123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      +TDUShelby Yeah that's what this movie has backwards. It miss-delivers a bad message. Doing nothing BUT praying/talking to yourself in a small room shut out from the world is the sin of sloth. The lord helps those who help themselves. So not only is this a bad movie, and a bad Christian movie, it teaches you to sin without remorse. You a drug dealer? No need to turn yourself in and serve time as long as you confess and say youre sorry, god's got you covered bro!

      +TDUShelby This reminds me of a quote from one of my favorite movies, The Poseidon Adventure:
      "So what resolution should we make for the new year? It's to let God know that you have the guts and the will to do it alone. Resolve to fight for yourselves, and for others, for those you love. And that part of God within you will be fighting with you all the way." - Rev. Frank Scott (Gene Hackman)

    You know what's a good Christian film? Blue Like Jazz, because It's not preachy, or up its own ass with messages.
    The whole movie is about a Christian guy stepping out of his hypocritical Baptist inner circle to experience the world, at a college that isn't too keene on Christians.
    I like it because the main character isn't spending the movie trying to spread the word of God or converting the Atheists, but realizing that there are a lot of perfectly reasonable reasons why people aren't Christian, and why there are so many hypocrites in his own religion; which makes him want to be a better man. He's basically got a Pope Francis attitude by the end of the movie.

      Saved is also a great film. About a girl who goes to a very Christian school, finds out that her boyfriend is gay and decides to have sex with him in order to "cure him". Doesn't work and not only is he sent to a place for kids that parents don't want to deal with, but she's pregnant. All about her becoming disillusioned with her religion, people that she thought were her friends, and her life in general.

    I feel like this movie should have had a plot twist, where Miss Clara was the Devil implanting these very stupid ideas of how to fix a relationship into vulnerable women, and interfering in ways that favor the abusive, scamming, drug dealing men, and wants to incite religious revolutions and assassinate the president. It would have at least made sense why she came off as a psycho.

You were just... saying that? Because you've been abused to the point of denial? Because one would think that you don't need help LOVING him, you need help finding the love you have inside for him. Sure, we can blame terrible writing, OR we can address the fact that this woman REALLY NEEDED TO GET A FUCKING DIVORCE. I just watched a review of the Kirk Cameron movie “Fireproof” yesterday, & I gotta say the parallel themes with this movie are pretty disturbing. Both are Christian films that have good-hearted wives with verbally abusive husbands who cheat or are addicted to porn. Both are demeaning and controlling with money. Both are objectively the kind of husbands that would make anyone who cares about the wife say “Leave him now!” But the message of both of these movies is “Just stay with your awful abusive husband- God will help you sort it out!” It’s really misogynistic and dangerous. Also soothing to some men, I’m sure. “Don’t worry, your wife will never leave you if you’re both Christians! You are supposed to be the one in charge, after all!”

    • @zenbrandon

The only recent one I've seen that actually wasn't ham-fisted in its religious themes or delved into propaganda was "Once I Was a Beehive".

    It's been a while since I've read either the old or new testaments, but I'm pretty sure even the scriptures denounce these kinds of religious practices. Prayer is supposed to be a conversation where the one praying asks for strength and guidance _to fix their problems with their own capabilities_, and not something where you expect everything to go your way because you asked God like a puerile, sophomoric child impudently begging its parents to make everything go their way. (And also to thank God for what you have; this "film" kind of forgot about that.) If anything, this is setting up anyone foolish enough to believe this propaganda for disappointment and potential loss of faith, because the truth is that while God does hear and answer every prayer, sometimes (a lot of the time) his answer is "no."
    How in the fuck can a movie like _Bruce Almighty_ more accurately and respectfully portray God than this piece of shit?

    • @jrlinsin
      @jrlinsin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Also, "God helps those who help themselves" isn't in the Bible, but was apparently commonly in ancient Greek works, that is, when the idea of any Jewish god wasn't yet popular there. People commonly quote the phrase from Benjamin Franklin.

      I agree about prayer. In my spiritual path, I believe we're all little manifestations of the divine, like the crystals of a chandelier; we all may be individual gems with our own facets and sparkles, but we reflect the same light. So, for me, prayer is focusing individual and collective power on a certain goal. It's, like you said, a support system.
      And thanks for the note on "God helps those who help themselves". I knew that wasn't from the Bible, but couldn't remember who it was attributed to. Good ol' Ben Franklin. But regardless of where it comes from, it's a popular saying among Christians and is much better than the message this movie sends, that you can just pray and then sit back to wait for things to happen to you rather than taking responsibility for your life and actions. That would be like a support group chatting over coffee about how great things will be when XYZ is done and then going home without having planned or done anything to make it happen.

      I don't quite understand where people like you get spiritual ideas from.
      It's not focusing power like this is all Sailor Moon or something, it's potential for good is based the emotional response to sympathy.

    • @TheaterRaven
      @TheaterRaven 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never watched "Sailor Moon", so I don't know how power works ineir story, but for me, the power isn't supernatural. It's lihe life force within all of us since we're all living, sentient beings.
      And I agree that prayer is also a natural response to seeing fellow people in distress or need. It's human to be sympathetic.

      Just replace "Sailor Moon" with any "magical thing wherein people can transfer some sort of power or life energy through supernatural means", the specifics are irrelevant. I've never seen proof of a life force other than the biological processes that keep us alive, so I was wondering where your other idea of "life force" came from.

    My grandpa was absolutely obsessed with this movie. He probably still is. He saw it twice in the theater, and he's bought almost every piece of merchandise including the prayer strategies book. He spent so much on it that he actually sold one of his guns to cover the cost. He drove me and grandma nuts with his constant talking about it. Last time he mentioned it he wanted to buy a blu ray player just so he could own that version of it. I love that man but good God he was just insane over this movie. And it looks just as awful as I expected.

    (WARNING: INCOMING RANT) I'm a Christian and even I think this movie is wrong. There are more to things than just praying. It's like this movie is teaching young women(like the daughter) that if you have an abusive, cheating asshole in your life, just sit and pray! That's not the right message at all. He's not going to change! There are times when you can deal with this situation on your own, like don't just pray, divorce his ass!

    • @SuperCosmicMutantSquid
      @SuperCosmicMutantSquid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Here's the thing though; a lot of women ARE taught this. They ARE taught that it's better to pray everything away than to be an independent person and seek out things for yourself. They are taught that doing nothing bur praying can cure everything and God deserves all credit, even for things that you do yourself. Black women are taught this and are taught to accept this as their/our role as a 'strong Christian Black woman' and as someone who's been through this I can tell that it is 100% fucking BULLSHIT.
      Part of this shit is why the Black community still has so many problems because we are taught not to do anything but to wait for God/Jesus to solve all of our problems when they're happening right in front of us. And if we even think of taking actions against anything, we're shunned at it for not being strong in our faith towards God. And so we let things deteriorate, we let people who need help just waste away and we just let shit happen all the while saying 'I guess God didn't want it for us' when if we had gotten off our asses and did something we COULD have had the glory, we could have had the success but no. We're just going to hold ourselves down and wait for chance to do it for us and then whine and whimper why our status in this country is still shit.
      And before you say anything, I am not angry at Christianity. You can believe in anything. I'm angry at the people who miss the point and can't see the point and try hard to block HUMAN NATURE and REACTION and have such a massive need to control people they say that the Bible allows them to behave that way, even though that is not a all true. People like the main character in this movie are control freaks; their behavior shows it as plain as day especially with how she tries to tell the other woman that she has God on her side to KEEP her in a shitty relationship. Any rational person would see the DAMAGE that type of relationship is causing and get the fuck out. The man does not care for her and is a creep to their kid but she HAS to stay because God WANTS her too? So if the husband moved up and started SEXUAL ABUSING the kid would she have to stay there too and let God handle it instead of leaving and saving the child from a traumatic experience?
      No, the annoying old BIDDY wants her to because she's projecting herself onto this woman and trying to create the relationship she WANTED but could not have with her own late husband.That's what most of these hardcore 'Christian' woman are doing when they treat people like this when they 'teach' them; it is all projection to what they want, not what people actually NEED. The idea of someone having their own life independent to what they see as perfect for them SCARES the ever living shit out of them because it's something they can not control and questions their own faith which, at least to me, is the last thing they should care about. If they were loving Christians they would simply care if the person is living a good life and not harming other people, not living live in a step-by-step Praise Jebus way they do. It's the reason they rage out when someone questions their 'faith' (ie, control) and goes against it because without anyone to boss around they feel like they have nothing which shows how little they have going for their lives anyway.
      If their only means of feeling like a good Christian is to project their own shitty lives onto others then they are not being Christians, they are just being assholes but like I said I've been around people like this for most of my life and it is ENCOURAGED that Black women behave like this. Acting like this is seen as a virtue but when you're a Black woman who is suffering from mental illness, addiction, and abuse and you see through the bullshit you start to realize just how much it is holding us back and how damaging it can be when it's spread around as the right thing to do. I can imagine how much better a lot of us would be if we held more Bible lessons along side with informing people, women and men, where they could go FOR ACTUAL HUMAN HELP. But we'd rather scare people into thinking the world is going to kill them if we don't believe in God the 'RIGHT' way.

    I'm so glad my family is Christian and Mexican so they can't understand what they're saying, but it's more ridiculous on Spanish tv. There's a show where every episode has a real world problem with no mention of God or faith until the end. The main character of the episode would pray to the Virgin Mary and magic would happen and solve everything and later would thank her. Again, my family doesn't watch that because they know it's bullshit.

    Parody idea: the wife ignores every aspect of her life by saying God'll take care of it all, her husband keeps acting like a dick and is sent to jail, and the old lady is insane, her son sending her to a home while she yells about how Muslims and Jews are hellbound.

      LOL!!!
      What if in actuality, the old woman was actually senile, and off her meds?
      But some how it was ignored because she's seen as the "magical old woman character" through the main character's own denial about her own marriage, because too afraid to fix her own problems.
      I really just wanna see an alternate version of the old woman going all "Cuckoo's Nest" with guys in white coats carrying her off as she yells absolute nonsense.

    Fun fact, the seemingly random woman at 8:12 who was also on the cover is Beth Moore, a baptist women's preacher who was pretty popular in those circles and probably why she got the cameo and cover appearance. However, she was basically canceled by Evangelicals for speaking out against their deification of Trump and the culture of sexual abuse and subsequent coverups in the Southern Baptist Church. They deemed her too "woke" for doing so.
    I just find it funny that if this were made today, she would definitely not have a cameo.

    So, this is basically a movie about a woman slowly losing her mind before she finally breaks, reality shatters, and she's put in an institution. All the while her mind creates a happy ending as she lies on the floor of a padded room talking to herself.
