  • @RiseOfTheKumquat67

    I feel like the "Death Of The Author" philosophy terrifies a lot of Christian filmmakers. If you allow for audience interpretation there's a chance that they might not get the Christian message, so they feel the need to hammer in preaching scenes and "persecution" scenes to make sure that the intended message is the only possible takeaway. If you want to send a message AND tell a good story, then you have to be willing to potentially be misunderstood.
    That being said, this movie feels significantly less scummy than God's Not Dead.

      +Rise Of The Kumquat +Rise Of The Kumquat I agree. This stripe of Christian is very fond of
      clear-cut messages in their fiction, to the point that they become
      conservative in their taste of narrative style. I used to hang out at an
      Evangelical board back in the day, because I found the phenomeon so
      alien, and in the entertainment section there was endless complaining
      about anything at all not very traditional in terms of story telling.
      It's not just when it comes to the content proper that they prefer
      tradition.
      Their literary style tends to align with the 19th century at its blandest and extremely watered down. They abhor modernism and post-modernism is close to anathema. Anything that is fragmentary is delivery, or stream-of-consciousness, or non-rhymed poetry is immediately discarded as unacceptable.
      It's not just that they dislike it, they often equate experimental fiction of any kind as 'wrong' and perhaps even sinful. The idea is that a clear, no-interpretation piece of fiction displays an orderly, godly way of creating while innovations that may muddle the message are a sign of moral degeneration.

      Nocturnalux What were their thoughts on Lord Of The Rings?

    • @Nocturnalux
      @Nocturnalux 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Rise Of The Kumquat
      They tend to really, really love it. Mostly it's because Tolkien was a Christian but they are perhaps surprisingly fond of fantasy as a genre. To the point that 'Christian fiction' is an actual sub-genre. But rest assured there are also those who hate it for being 'magical' as thus potentially 'demonic.' There is most definitely a double standard, though, as Tolkien is mostly loved but Harry Potter tends to be lumped in the 'demonic' category.
      Tolkien also has that very traditional kind of writing that appeals to them. No profanity, no sex also help his popularity in Evangelical circles. But I suspect that if Tolkien were not a Christian and still wrote LotR, they would not be half as fond of it.
      What they really hate, apart from erotica, obviously, is literary fiction. It drives them insane how literature can exist as an art form disconnected from a message. They want literature, music, movies, etc, to contain and express a moral, namely their own. Deviate from this and they frown on it.
      Particularly interesting is their approach to what Christians can and can't show in movies/books. An actual example I encountered on this forum included a Christian author that was struggling with what to actually include in his book about a pastor having an affair.
      Needless to say the ending was decided ahead of time as having the pastor realize the error of his ways and re-consign his life to Jesus. But should the author just hint at the affair? Or actually show it? Can Christians write in detail about sin in order to make a story beliavable or is that, in itself, sinful?
      The majority was of the opinion that no, Christian authors should not actually show anything truly bad.

    The very phrase "just tell a good story" went through my mind two seconds before you said it. This is exactly the problem with most Christian film: the goal has become sending a message moreso than telling a good story. What filmmakers miss though, is that if you tell a really good story, your message will come through so much clearer than if you simply use a script to prop up a point.
    I'd like to see you review "Mom's Night Out". If you take it for the exaggerated light comedy movie that it was designed to be, I think you'd be doing pretty well to find fault with it.

      +MasterSanders Exactly. When will a Christian movie dramatize the plight of Christians being persecuted by ISIS? Probably never because that would end up too violent a film and would frighten the children. Thus, we end up with villains who "persecute" Christians by unplugging a microphone wire. Thrilling stuff.

    That awkward moment when a guy who knows southern evangelical White history knows why this movie is so sketch. It was actually the southern "Christians" of that era that had a problem with desegregation. For example, Jerry Falwell Sr. started a 1-12 school in direct protest of desegregation. He even preached pro-segregation sermons. In fact, the growing liberalness of the Democrats on racial matters drove him to start the Moral Majority. The Moral Majority worked tirelessly to get the evangelicals in the United States to leave the Democrats and join the "Conservative" Republicans. Reagan only got into office because of how the Moral Majority "got out the vote." Reagan only won because the democrats were demoralized and stayed home. In 1980 Reagan received fewer votes than one of the the guys who lost to FDR, and that guy was absolutely destroyed!
    I know all this because I worked in the Jerry Falwell Library Archives!

    I went to public school and the school accidentally asked a Christian motivational speaker to talk to the whole class. Now, I went to school in Connecticut, and while the majority of the school was Christian anyways, we also had Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and, like myself, Jews.
    It's not that I found his message offensive, but in saying that the answers to his problems came from Jesus, I felt left out, as did a lot of other people. Our school newspaper wrote an editorial denouncing the school for inviting the speaker, and really that was it. The ACLU didn't sue anyone, and parents didn't storm the PTA meetings. The newspaper rightly shamed the school for its decision, and that was it. That's how the real world works.

      +Say Goodnight Kevin but does that make the whole movie crap or certain elements of its development?

    • @saygoodnightkevin
      @saygoodnightkevin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Josiah Osborne As a whole, the film isn't good. There are elements of it that could have been good. I think it's deceptive, because we don't often see a Christian film spend $25mil. But considering Remember the Titans (a movie seem to be in love with) had a $30mil. budget, this movie does not live up.
      Part of the problem with these movies is that they don't have the tight script submission process. Scripts for movies like RTT have to be submitted and sold to the studio before they ever even get considered. This film is sloppy, and I dislike it that much more, since there was a good story here to explore. Honestly, I don't think they cared about telling a good story. I think, and the creators of the film are honest about this, they tried to to make a movie that SEEMS like a real movie, but is actually a sermon.

      October baby has a lot of problems though. It demonizes people who have had abortions, which is unfair. Don't get me wrong, I am anti abortion. The thing is, is that they made her birth mom an awful person. A straw man. If they wanted to do that topic well, they should have had more then one mother who had aborted babies in the movie and show what leads people to make those decisions, and how regretful so many people are.

    • @riversonglovesthedr
      @riversonglovesthedr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      except most ppl aren't regretful about their abortions.
      Most women who chose adoption aren't awful people not even the ones who end up with kids in foster care are.
      If Christians wish to project the compassion they say they have maybe they would reflect that in these movies.
      It never is tho.
      October Baby is a horrible movie because the story relies on stereotypes, judgement and assumptions.

  • @AndrewSpads
    @AndrewSpads 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Hey Kevin, great video as always! However, one thing you said irked me a bit.
    While supporting your libertarian views, you said that Saul the Pharisee didn't continue to be a Pharisee after converting to Christianity. And that's just not true. While he did accept Jesus as his Savior, Paul never stopped being Jewish or a Pharisee.
    He clearly says this in Acts 23:6 while he's speaking to a group of Sadducees and Pharisees, "Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees!"
    I'm not angry at you or trying to be rude, but it just disappoints me to see that many people believe that Paul cast aside his Judaism and that 1st Century Christianity and the Pharisees were strictly separate entities, never in agreement, and always bickering with each other.
    Anyways, I know that this wasn't the point of the video at all, it's just a subject that I feel passionate about. Overall I really did enjoy your video. You always raise good points, and I love your insights. Thanks!

      I understand where you are coming from, there's a lot of early church history that some people like to ignore/forget like how for the first few decades that Christianity was around, Christians were just Jews and ultimately Christianity was kind of like the next step in Judaism and not its replacement.

    Hi Kevin, loved the review as yet again I agreed with nearly all your points. I watched this last week and felt that the move was really good, but there were a few things I had "concerns" over. Like the part where we had the God's Not Dead "school taking out the Christian religion" mentality, which I was glad that they didn't focus too much of the story on, but was just present enough to make me think, "Was this shoe horned in to get the financial backing support of Pureflix"? I have watched their other two movies, and I don't really think that the directors necessarily think that way. Any ways, the thing that I was really glad you caught on to was how Sean Astin's character was utilized so much. I think he would have been better utilized as the character who started them off, and then we watch the team actually struggle into their new found faith, (which I thought there were a few moments of between the coach and Nathan) but we almost NEVER got to see with the rest of the team. I certainly missed that, which is why I still love Remember the Titans and Glory Road more. Anyways, I love what you do and can't wait to see what else you have in store. Side note, I am currently writing a "Christian" film right now and looking to produce it within the next year, and have been using your reviews as a good example of how to make these types of movies. Which I almost always agree with your comments, so thank you, as you offer valuable insight into helping aspiring film makers.
    I have two suggestions for future movie reviews. 1. Movie throwback to (in my humble opinion) one of the worst and easiest to make fun of Christian movies of all time "Second Glance" and 2. the one that may not beat the system, but might be passable "Blue Like Jazz". Blue Like Jazz is not perfect, but once the main character gets to college, it made for some interesting story telling.

    I know you get a lot of requests but I think one of the more interesting and decent Christian movies I've seen is called Ragamuffin. It's about Rich Mullins, the man who wrote the song "Awesome God." I suppose what I like about it is that I've never really seen a Christian movie that actually focuses on a characters walk with God, not why you should be walking too dang it! It could be hit or miss a lot of the time, especially when it tried to be artistic in its cinematography. It tried though, and it had the right idea going in. Don't know if you'd want to feature it on the show but I'd definitely suggest it just as one Christian with a critical eye for film to another.

    I'm still waiting for the day we will see hypocritical/misled believers as antagonists. The lack of character development for the team makes me think of Western Christianity's focus on preaching and superstar missionaries, at the expense of discipleship and the global Church. Maybe I'm getting a little too deep now... but I appreciate what you do Kevin! :)

    Sean Astin, the Erwin brothers, and the guy who played Tony all came to convocation at Liberty University last semester to talk about the film. They said it would be about healing racial tension in the heart of the South at a school that struggled with integration. When I saw it in theaters, that is what I expected, but that message felt so lost and kind of like a thing that was checked off on the list of things this movie tried to say. It didn't go anywhere, which was my issue. It was brought up once, and then never brought up again, and the entire story lost its focus

    I would like to know your opinions on the movie Mom's Night Out. My friends and I actually like this one, but we like it as a guilty pleasure movie. It actually tries to be a comedy, which I think is an... interesting idea. The biggest flaws of the movie are that it tries way too hard to appeal to non-Christian audiences, and it seems to have too much confidence in how funny it is. Watch it for yourself and you'll see what I mean. Who knows, you might actually like this one. You might enjoy seeing a Christian movie letting loose a little, with the Christian message as a bit of an after thought. Then again, I still consider this a guilty pleasure film. This could very well be an extremely painful watch for you.

    Dude, this movie had potential. So much potential.
    I mean, if they had focused on character development and better story, it may have been amazing.
    The best Christian stories don't have preachy sermons shoehorned and forced into a film. It is well mixed and blended into the film itself. Kinda like chocolate milk (gotta love that stuff). If you take some good milk, pour it into a cup and put some chocolate syrup in it... Yeah, sure, you've got chocolate and you've got milk. But if you take a sip all you'll taste is milk, or if you use a straw all you'll get it chocolate syrup. I can tell you that expecting well blended chocolate milk but getting a mouthful of raw chocolate syrup isn't far too pleasant. Yeah, you gotta mix the stuff so it tastes good. Same with Christian movies. Gotta blend good acting, character development, and story with a good message instead of having them feel disjointed.
    I don't even know if that makes any sense to you, but it certainly made me thirsty for chocolate milk. And I'm just tired. So there's that.

    As a christian myself, and at the same time a writer aspiring to work within the film industry, I can only agree 100 % with your take on the christian movies. And it saddens me that christians has to cater to the audience, when we have, I belive, the greatest message a movie could have, and yet we present this message in a completely unrealistic, dumbed down and didactic way. It is as if we are afraid to show truth and realism within our works, in a fear that God might not approve (even though I think he does. Come to think about it, some of the greatest movies out there has a blatant christian message, even though they have been directed by non-christians: The Dark Knight and The Lord of The Rings comes to mind as movies of the modern era which has a very strong, christian morality within them), and that is a real shame. We are not commanded to mediocrity - We are commanded to excellence.

    15:20 Wait, what? "That's too bad?" How is that a reasonable response? No one likes getting hurt, no one likes feeling pain. Lady, if I made like I was gonna slap you I bet you'd flinch. How come? Oh, because you don't like getting hurt and feeling pain, that's why! We dislike pain because pain is the way our bodies tell us that we are injured. We are, literally through our nerves, hardwired to avoid things that cause pain because those things are injurious to us and we want to avoid them, because survival is an _incredibly_ powerful instinct.
    You are not somehow brave or amazing because you don't fear pain, you've merely overridden a survival tool meant to keep you safe.
