The MOST IMPORTANT Martial Art Lesson I Ever Learned

  • The aspect of "playing" or exploring/discovering within martial arts is probably one of the best learning principles I have picked up since starting martial arts 6 years ago. While there are many differing learning and teaching methods that all have their, "just messing around" is the one that has helped me grow and branch out the most. Yes, we should still follow structured and rigid rules within martial arts: keep you hands up, snap back your straight punches, rotate your hips and pivot foot on round kicks, push your hips out on a teep, etc. HOWEVER...don't forget to have some fun! Grab a training knife or handgun and add it in to your sparring. Try out some free rolling with a partner even if you've never done grappling/BJJ in your life. Play with some sweeps and reading your partner's push/pull energy. With a little bit of research and time -- but also time at the gym -- you can figure a lot of this stuff out. It's not exactly rocket science.

What is a technique/topic you'd like to mess around with? What type of content would you like to see more of in the future?

2:15, very true. That's why I enjoy sharing stuff where I try out stuff I haven't trained that much at times (new weapons, new scenarios like recently my no weapon vs nunchaku sparring video), or like the TMNT themed weapon flow video I did where there's a lot of imperfections shown but it's just about the spirit of fun. When you impress people you sometimes inspire them to better themselves, but I think it becomes way more powerful and beneficial when they see the person they were impressed by show imperfections, that shows that it's all a process and they don't have to be perfect. Sounds like good self defense training with the handgun and knife :)

Exactly! I love showing the imperfections because then people don't set as high of a bar for me lol.

I think this is the "art"-part of martial arts, taking all the good things you learn and play around with to make it your own.

Greetings from Recoleta -Chile 🇨🇱🤝. The truth is very necessary to learn other combat sports or martial arts that complement very well, especially Wrestling, a sport not well known in my country. It helps a lot to develop combative skills, personally to My has helped me a lot to improve for a personal defense that is "REAL". A great channel on TH-cam among so much shit that there is on the internet continues like this 💪. Continue with the sparring, demonstrating techniques that do not work, the skills to be able to adapt to each scenario and be able to reduce the damage 🤝 💪🇨🇱

100% Learn the kata, memorize the kata, forget the kata. It can also teach you what not to do. Great content.

I'm at this point where I just love learning everything, useful or not. I love the "art" more than anything. Ugly ones included!
