Knife Defense Series | Part 2: FORWARD PRESSURE

  • Out of the last 5-6 years of my martial arts training, knife defense has always been one of my favorite topics and the element of self-defense that I probably study the most. I think I've seen just about every knife defense from every mainstream martial art. Surprise, surprise...most of them suck. Granted, knife defense is hard. It's a sucky situation no matter what and no technique is perfect which is exactly why I say there IS NO KNIFE TECHNIQUE...only principles and concepts that will hopefully be enough to help you survive and get medical attention. We're under the assumption that we will only be able to mitigate damage --- not cancel it out entirely.
In my experience, forward pressure is often a key part of the defense that I see lacking in other teachings or, even worse, in real knife scenarios where, unfortunately, the defender doesn't turn out successful. While there are many different directions of pressure or energy that could happen during the defense, forward is key to making the initial defense in order to get 2on1 control.
    My knife principles:
    1. Intercept (frame, catch, jam)
    2. Forward Pressure
    3. Maintain 2on1
    4. Attacks/Transitions
    5. Takedown/Takeaway/Disengage

If you want to further your research I would also suggest checking Aaron Jannetti @jannettiaaron on Instagram. We shared a lot of similar views and there are still things I'm learning from him.

A quick note... I want to make the distinction that forward pressure may not be necessary for the whole entire defense --- more so for the initial defense in order to close distance and attain 2-on-1 control. Obviously, once we are in the grappling phase our pressure and energy (push/pull) could be in a different direction at any time.

Incredible work! I hope to see you guys continue the series someday. I know Jannetti had a few more core principles. I think they were
    1. Frame/Catch/Jam
    2. Forward Pressure (this one)
    3. 2-on-1 Control
    4. Striking/Transitions
    5. Takedown/Takeaway/Disengage

Excellent principles! Was thinking once you have the two on one wrist catch by dropping to one knee quickly and twisting his wrist the attacker would be effectively disarmed!!!

That's pretty good. Are you using straight forward pressure, or counter pressure? I mean pushing forward with your head while pulling with your hand. I find keeping their knife as far away from their body and as close to yours at all times is very effective, it also stops them from moving backwards to regain position. Especially if there's nothing around for them to lean against.

Once I'm in, my pressure depends on the pressure they're giving me (pushes and pulls, etc.) or I can use my pressure to create the movement I want from them. Principle 3 video I talk a little more about it. I would also check out Aaron Jannetti's stuff. He dives a lot into the importance of pushes and pulls.
