  • About Knife Defense...
Over the years as I grew in martial arts, I developed a particular interest in knife/edged weapons defense. I felt that a lot of systems either didn't cover it well, oversimplified, or tried to make it too fancy. They just didn't quite coincide with the real, violent knife encounters that I had studied.

So I began to learn, try, and fail at technique/principles that I tried to figure out on my own. Eventually, I came across Aaron and the Knife Control Concepts (KCC) program -- and I'm so glad that I did!

KCC really honed in on what I consider the most difficult part of knife defense: the control aspect. How do I properly control the weapon arm as well as the person wielding the knife? How do I adapt and gain better sensitivity to the violent and jerky movements throughout the encounter? How do I set myself up to be in a good/better position to perform a safer takedown/sweep or draw my own weapon? What are some drills/flows to help increase my efficiency in practicing these skills?

KCC answered all of these questions and more. It focused on the grappling aspect which I found to be essential to knife defense. The program was also built in a manner that was easy to follow, revisit and was conducive to learning and growth. It encouraged repetition, discovery, exploration, and feedback. It was awesome.

If you're looking to up your self-defense game then KCC is an absolute must in my book. I'm happy to answer any questions anyone might have. Additionally, on May 14-15th we will have Aaron AND Eli Knight comin to the gym in Utah to! Message me if you're interested. You will not want to miss this seminar! ⚔
    My knife principles:
    1. Intercept (frame, catch, jam)
    2. Forward Pressure
    3. Maintain 2on1
    4. Attacks/Transitions
    5. Takedown/Takeaway/Disengage

The first day will cover knife control from standup and the following day will cover knife control from the ground. You will NOT want to miss this! Message me for details on here or Instagram.
What do you struggle with most in knife defense? How often do you train your knife defense?
Sorry for the stupid background noise in the beginning...

Cool stuff! How do you deal with your opponents other arm/ limbs though? Seems like he could hurt you pretty bad?

Good question, Simon! I would check out some of the sparring videos in the knife defense series. From my experience, I'm actually not too worried about being struck by the other hand/limbs -- or at least anything that's gonna take me out of the fight. I want my primary focus to be on the knife arm which is the think that could kill me, however, there are other positions that can actually help give me control of both arms (see those other videos again) that will then allow me to move on to a takedown or draw my weapon, etc. We'll probably cover that in the next video =).

@@BeReadySelfDefense Nice to see Simon Eriksson commenting, long time supporter of my channel as well :) I think it is relevant to think about the unarmed arm, cuz if it lands a solid strike or grabs you, that could cause you to lose focus/control of that weapon arm. I think postions like the one at 1:35 especially are good, cuz from that angle the opposite arm is out of position to execute anything significant. Great content as always Be Ready Self Defense :)

Won't work for a small female vs large male.

I have seen many females successfully grapple with larger males. While size/weight can certainly be a factor, it is certainly not the only determining one. I've found that time on the mats drilling, flowing, and developing sensitivity to different positions is a much greater indication to a women's ability to fight someone larger than her. However, instantly telling them they cannot protect themselves solely off of size difference is a surefire way to stunt your female students' growth. I prefer to develop badass ladies. 🤷‍♂️
