Cant understand WHY these days bladed clubs are set for stiff shaft options only. You get better feel off bladed clubs and the strike is purer. Offset clubs let you get away with bad shots. Its all down to the shafts.. a soft regular shaft in a blade when hit properly is sheer joy. I played with Wilson Staff Fg49s with regular R400 True temper steel shafts. They were awesome. Now got Takomo 101Ts with Senior Graphite shafts. I strike the ball cleaner with blades... I always struggled with offset clubs .. either hit the ball early or late..
I play blades, because I honestly prefer to see less behind the ball, helps me stay focused on the front of the ball. The other piece is coming from baseball I have a tendency to de-loft clubs slightly at impact so it helps me get the ball up to what you would probably consider "normal" for a hollow face. I do find my bad strikes have a higher dispersion, but I have less of them. I also play a fairly short course, so I rarely need to hit 4,5,6. 90% of the time I only hit them on the range because I still want to work on them. I can say some days I just stripe them and other days I dont think it matters what club is in my hand a toddler would beat me.
I bought a set of Mizuno 221 blades as a 10 handicap player. I never found them hard to hit and they went almost as far as my stronger lofted previous irons. After a year of play and practice, I strike the ball better than I ever have and I hit them about a full club farther than I hit the old clubs. I love the look and feel and couldn't be happier with them. Maybe not for everybody, but they have worked for me. I don't think blades are really that hard to hit. I think TH-cam hypes the difficulty too much.
MP20s are some of the most "forgiving" blades I've ever hit. I play the Taylormade P7mb and had the Titleist 718 previously and they are far more punishing on off center strikes. Mizuno us trending in the direction of smaller clubheads, thinner toplines etc. The 241 is not as easy to hit as the MP20.
I am a 22.6 and used to game Taylormade Stealth Irons (that I was fitted for), but I have just got myself a set of P770's (not fitted, second hand) and seem to be having a lot less lateral dispersion and I have only lost 10 yards of distance so far and they look so much better to me and give me more confidence of hitting them.

As an old man, my first set was garage sale clubs Wilson Staff blades. You learn to adapt, and overtime you get better. I still prefer a blade style on 8 and up, I feel they play better around the green
I wanted to try a set of blades and decided to buy a set of second hand Mizuno MP18s last year. I have been using PXG 0211s for the last couple of years and got down to an 18 handicap. Practiced with the blades hit them really well, something about the small head makes you concentrate on the strike. Played my 2 best ever rounds with the Mizunos of 80 and a 76. I found very similar results regarding yardage, despite the loft changes I was only a couple of yards shorter on most clubs but the stoppage on the green was amazing. Definitely worth a try if you’re curious. I got the Mizunos from EBay for less than £200 and they are mint.
Makes me think of a bladed 1 iron, I had it for years just kicking about, but last year I took it to the range for a laugh, not only did I hit it straight, but it went like an absolute missile, I'd definitely use it out on the course when it's blowing.
So about a year ago I could not break 100 consistently. Would shoot a 100-102 on average. At the time I was gaming TaylorMade Stealth HD irons. Gradually my game improved, and when I say I put the practice in, I PUT THE PRACTICE IN. Consistently shoot about 81-85 now, which if I had to guess would be about a 9-10 handicap. (I don't keep a handicap). I say all that to get to this point in the present day. Currently I am going back and forth between gaming my Sub 70 MB/CB set and my Takomo 301CBs. Interestingly I hit my Sub 70s just a smidge farther but not by much. The muscle backs in the Sub 70 set are 6-PW and I honestly have no problem being able to hit them consistently. After 11 years of playing RBZ,I purchased P7MC’s today, couldn’t believe the size difference behind the ball, smallest irons I’ve played so gonna b very interesting first couples of rounds 😫 (14 hcp),great content as always Alex👍
I played mizuno 921 tours for years…love them. But it started to be a struggle this past year. I bought a full 4-G set of old Cobra S3 cavity backs for 150 bucks. Night and day difference on forgiveness. So easy to hit compared to the mizunos. Never going back to blades. Keep it simple. Boring simple golf is good scoring golf
The irons that I play with are Ping G25’s. But I also have a set of Nike vapor pro blades that I’ll take out once a week just to have some fun with. I’m not gonna lie, they are hard to hit at least for me. But when I do hit them pure, oh my gosh, the feeling is amazing. I’ve only been playing for about a year, so I’m hoping eventually I can become good enough to play the Nikes all the time.
My first set of clubs was a give-me set of Hogan Apex II. I miss those clubs as I traded them in for a set of King Cobra II - oversized and then Ping offset clubs. My next set will be Hogan blade clubs.
When I was a kid blades were pretty much all we had. So at the time mid handicap players hit forged muscle back or early versions of hollow back irons. What does do is teach you to hit center mass.
I learned to play golf with Titleist 731 Phil Mickelsons blade irons.. they were a muscle and cavity back combo. I miss them, when you hit it just right. There's no better feeling. Now I have just upgraded from ping I3s to Cobras Forged X.. I have a feeling I'm gonna miss the pings 😔
I think it’s a great test, but because they are a blade makes you concentrate on the shot where as when playing forgiving irons you pick the right club and just swing as you know it will be there about
I've just gone back to blades on Saturday, after getting back into golf 2 years ago(I hadn't played for 12 years). What a difference. Oh and If you don't want the RF irons, I'll have them😂👍👌
This video is pretty similar to my experience. Ultimately I'm playing blades from 7-PW and 4-6 are more game improvement. More loft equals forgiveness essentially so we can all hit a bladed wedge.
I play Cobra forged Tech 2020 irons, love em similar numbers to the test ! I recently changed to midsized grips and boy what a difference higher numbers in each club effortlessly…………. Never tried blades, but why change for potentially hitting balls more often not where you want to, not for moi !!
My cobra fly z+ irons are not far off being a bladed iron they have a very thin sole and appear to be very thin top line however they are a cavity back irons with a big old chunk of plastic jammed in the back of them to dampen the sound way down. Check them out, I absolutely love them and have no intention of ever selling them
I found the drop off in distance between the 'forgiving' clubs' distance, so 9-7-4 was 32-19 yards, vs the RF blades which 9 -7-4 was 26 - 28 yards the most compelling reason for choosing blades. On these (very limited agreed) shots, there seems a greater consistency in change of iron to length of shot in the blades. Of course, you do have to be able to hit the damned things....
I’ve been playing the RF Rev33s for about 6-7 months now. I love them, but you can’t just chuck them at a ball, the amount of side spin you can put on defies logic, so you HAVE to have a good swing path. But the distance control is perfect, if you know the distance and flush it, it’s guaranteed on the green!
I went from the Titleist T350s to Mizuno 245s and seem to be having more success, alot more understanding of where my shots will go. They are not blades, but a sign forgiveness doesn't always mean it suits you, if you feel confident looking at it, that is all you need.
I play forged tecs too and have similar experiences to Josh. As much as the blades are lovely, hitting off mats on the flat does not reflect course conditions which may have rough, slopes and variety of lies. Also strike with the long irons will fail more with blades. Don’t let one good range session with blade go to your head. If you want to score properly, golf is hard make it easy for yourself. Would you rather give up 4-5 shots per round with ugly irons or more with beautiful ones?
I just started playing golf and I have those rickie fowler blades. Absolutely love them but when I hit a bad shoot it hurts the hands like nothing else and the distance is pretty bad 😂😂
I would have been better with a more forgiving set of irons but anytime I have played with mates they let me use there clubs and they used blades so I never hit anything other than blades. Ur vids though have def helped my ball striking with them so keep them rolling out. 👍👌
I think the blades look great despite the top line being narrower. The blades are for good and consistent ball strikers and if you can hit the middle of the club every time then they are great. However most handicap golfers are not consistent and this is where the distance varies in playing the irons. Also the loft will have an impact in the distance the ball goes. I think if you are a consistent ball striker then the blades are definitely the scoring clubs and I love the look of them. The other clubs top line looks chunky and does not give me confidence it appears as though it is too cumbersome and not a nice clean and neat look. Blades for me every time!
Maybe this is an argument for combo set. Cobra mb/cb and forgetec/mim. Less likely to get flyers with the scoring irons and more forgiveness with the longer irons
I have heard blade will make a better striker though because you feel the errors more. Also if you miss hit and lose distance there is less of a chance of losing that ball in the woods.
As a mid-handicapper, I find my "game improvement" Mizuno 921 Hot Metal irons... unpredictable. F.e. I hit my 8 iron around 145-150y. Typically. But sometimes, when the gods of golf give me a touch, and my swing gets a bit better, once in a round - I hit it 190. I had shots even over 200y. Moreover, with their offset, I started to hit a lot of left misses. That is why I am in the market for smth "more pro". I have an old set of McGregor VIP forged irons. Compared to those, these RF blades are baby toys... 7 iron is 35 degrees and looks like this RF blade 4 iron. 5 is so small that it is hard to say if there is any head on this shaft... They were marked as "better player irons". For me, their biggest advantage is that they are dead straight. I don't know why, I hit them on the line almost every time. I just too often end up too short, I am not good enough for them. Not yet, not yet, but...
Doesn't this provide some thought towards what seems to be happening in the "players" irons with combo sets? Making similar size/top lines between a couple different club models. Ie: srixons zx5 -> zx7s. Where you would want the more forgiving longer clubs and the more workable club in the shorter ones?
Hitting every shot off a mat with a perfect lie doesn't mean anything. Take him on course and let him hit a couple of 4irons off the fairway and out of the rough.
Trouble off mats? You probably take deep divots. Players who like mats usually hit behind the ball and mats allow good shots by sliding into the ball. That just doesn’t work on turf. PenguinGolf
I collect old blades. I have modern irons as well. I alternate between the new irons and the 50 year blades. I don't score any better or worse with the blades. Basically it all comes down to your short game. I don't hit more greens with old or new. My hcp hovers around 5. "My experience" is that blades are no harder to score with. I'll give you a $100 for the Cobras.
@@dougalwatts3656 Sure, I've got quite a few 1 irons. How much do you want for it? I live in Australia so the cost of postage tends to make them too pricey.
Hey @alex, Wondering if you think blades from 5 years ago would still hold up in comparison to this year's models? Currently rocking the 2019 t 200 mid handicapper. Wondering if I should get a newer club more on the forgiving side. T.I.A
I played mizuno or titleist blades for 20 years, decided I was getting older and needed forgiveness and distance so I went to the p790 of Taylormade. My GIR went from around 75-80% to maybe 50%. Played them a year, then went back to some ancient mp14s and the gir came back. Absolutely everyone.... I'll repeat everyone, should be playing a blade iron. It tunes you up. Your natural swung gets better because it HAS TOO.
I mean, really cool video--legitimately cool--the thing that's frustrating about all(?) these types of videos is that you're just comparing the clubs with the same number on the sole, when you should really be comparing clubs with the same (or as close as possible) loft. Like, Josh's 7 vs the Rickie 6 (or whatever)--now that's a fair fight, and actually more interesting, in my opinion. Because the reality is that most of us with distance irons carry 4 wedges (5, if you include the set PW), and when getting into traditionally lofted clubs, we get to ditch one of those.
Irons like the Forged Tec , P790's are so prone to low spin jumpers with the lower lofts and thin faces , put Josh in some King Tours or T150's where you get a much more tighter dispersion with better spin numbers and are not as intimidating as blades and Mid handicap Josh turns into Low handicap Josh !!!
Combo sets are the way forward for everyone, tour pros put more forgiveness in at the top end, why not game something more player like at the bottom end for more club golfers
So the RF irons are like going on a first date with a super model. The first date goes great and she’s all into you. Then…the second date she goes to the bathroom and she never comes back. Not that it has happened to me 😢
Blades are always better, if you want to get better. Game improvement irons will do nothing to help you improve your game. Now, if you are resigned to not getting better, but you still want to play better, go for it.
Club manufacturers have convinced an entire generation of golfers that they need clubs filled with foam, with hideously large clubheads, grotesque toplines, and jacked lofts to hit the golf ball. It's a shame that so many golfers will never know the joy of playing a set of blades because Titleist, Taylormade, and the rest of the big equipment companies are selling the latest and greatest "tech" to golfers that don't really need it. Every decent golfer should have at least a decent set of used blades in the garage that they can use to learn how to strike the ball and interact with the turf properly. Long live bladed irons.
Played blades all my 50 years of golf. Two years ago at 68, found a set of Ping Rapture J2 with graphite shafts. I love the purity of blades; design, looks, purity of strike. Hate the impure ones. Long story short. Haven’t lost any money in my weekly games in two years while all my mid single gang are struggling with their blades. Gotta admit their bags look better than my fat ladies. If you’re young and a reasonable ball striker, go with the blades and hone your swing. You’ll thank yourself when you’re 70 like me. PenguinGolf
Acceptable yes! i you like them , play them! but i dont believe they give the best result to many mid-handicappers! for me, big no! i need a club that inspires a lot confidence! i might be a high hcp though, im hcp 17. at the moment i play Wilson D9:s. and they are big and forgiving
If you hit a ball 100 yards with a blade, it won't do much better with a "forgiving" club. There might be a difference with small mis hits but big misses will be terrible with either club.
I disagree I think he should use them, blades will improve your swing. If you can accept the I’d bad swing I think you will see an overall improvement. Honestly it may even improve guys strike with his putter.
to me the blades just suit my eyes and are confident inspiring to me, maybe I am weird but I play better with blades. coming from baseball for 17 years, aim small miss small.
That swing does not look like a regular "mid handicap" iron swing.... No wonder he can hit a bladed iron with such a consistent movement 👍🏻. The handicap doesn't tell the whole story of a player's swing 😉. Because of that I don't like the category "mid handicapper irons" etc.
How one hits a particular iron is irrelevant. If you hit a 7 iron from one set further than the 7 iron from another set doesn't make it better. The critical stat is the distance between each iron in a set. Consistent distance between irons in a set is what is necessary.
Why is everyone so utterly obsessed with distances? As if that's the only thing to an iron. Trajectory, stopping power, peak height, all better with a blade. So i'm hitting into a green at 170 and mishit and come up 20 yards short, i've got a chip onto the green. Hit a CB into a green and roll off the back. Chip on. No difference. Why does nobody mention that you should be hitting to the back of the green incase of a mishit? So instead of 170 i hit to 190 and if i come up short or don't absolutely pure it i'm gonna hit the green still. All just distance distance distance which doesn't mean anything at all. If you want to go further take more club.
I game the Vega/J Lindberg vmb blades Alex Pure blade but the pitching wedge is 44 degrees There's a reason why I'm the handicap I am... I play a lot of golf solo and playing in a fourball at the weekend in a medal where suddenly people want to take forever lining up a three footer for bogey or changing which club they're going to hit from 65 yards three times until they then duff it for the third time in a row bores me. I can't concentrate and I get into my flow.
nobody over a 6 or 7 handicap should ever, EVER, use blades...they are not forgiving...waste of money and time unless you are a consistent ball striker.
A golfer with that quality of swing needs to forget forgiveness and start working with feedback. Advanced clubs are better in the bag. I know and respect the data, but playing hollow bodies thru the set for comfort is not going to help.
Why are you conning your viewers ? Your subject has the swing of a very low single digit handicap player.. he must putt with a ping-pong paddle to attain his double digit handicap
@@HowGoodGolf The golf game, especially, the handicap is about potential. Say your subject’s handicap number is 14 he has the potential to be a much better player than that. Your subject should have been a legitimate mid handicap player that does not have the potential to get any better. You know that as well as I. I have lost respect for you.

After 11 years of playing RBZ,I purchased P7MC’s today, couldn’t believe the size difference behind the ball, smallest irons I’ve played so gonna b very interesting first couples of rounds 😫 (14 hcp),great content as always Alex👍
No way! Yeah huge difference, and thank you!!
I game the Forge Tec and absolutely love them
These are hollow body
Check them out, I absolutely love them and have no intention of ever selling them
Hahaha great video mate...buy the man a brush hahaha...I would get nightmares if my clubs was in that state😂😂
I play off 19 and play with my takomo blades for fun and to help practice strike then my PXG gen5P when I’m playing with friends 👍
I won’t be switching to finger stingers! Might switch to hollow body irons in the winter. G400’s to i530’s.
Yes if you want to get better sooner and let’s see on the course too
I just started playing golf and I have those rickie fowler blades. Absolutely love them but when I hit a bad shoot it hurts the hands like nothing else and the distance is pretty bad 😂😂
Haha yeah josh found the same!
I would have been better with a more forgiving set of irons but anytime I have played with mates they let me use there clubs and they used blades so I never hit anything other than blades. Ur vids though have def helped my ball striking with them so keep them rolling out. 👍👌
i love the look of the blades. I would game them if i could hit them decently lol. im huge on aesthetics.
Thanks Alex great video! I've been wondering this for a while, I'd like to try Blades
What are your thoughts??
My son has been playing golf for 3 years - he’s a very good ball striker. He actually hits the Ricky Fowler blades better than anything else.
Distance is a poor metric to compare different sets. Grouping is what matters.
Agreed. Everyone is into how far a club will go. Not accuracy.
Absolutely brilliant video
Best mid handicapper in the UK ☘️👌
love those Cobra MB's, I almost purchased a set myself
Nice aren’t they!!
I play blades but only 7-PW and love them after that it’s hybrids cause I don’t like game improvement irons too much offset
Mp-33 Mizuno blades is what I play
I have heard blade will make a better striker though because you feel the errors more. Also if you miss hit and lose distance there is less of a chance of losing that ball in the woods.
You guys must make a video playing the rickies on a course. That would be interesting.
Great idea! I will cover this in another video for you 🙌🏼
As a mid-handicapper, I find my "game improvement" Mizuno 921 Hot Metal irons... unpredictable.
Takoma 301cbs look like blades but very forgiving and not hollow
Oooooo we have to give these a go!!
@HowGoodGolf yes you do. Please do a comparison against my t150s I just bought. 😂
They’re cavity back according to their website. They do have the look of a blade.
I just don’t think it matters , honestly has anyone ever used a club that makes you a better golfer ?
@@stevenmiller3784 you can buy clubs that will hinder you! It’s proven that peripheral weighted clubs are more forgiving.
I find mats make it harder not easier
I don’t think mats it any easier to be honest
@@HowGoodGolfnope I hit better off grass!
Interesting. I’d like to see his short game 😂
Trouble off mats?
You probably take deep divots. Players who like mats usually hit behind the ball and mats allow good shots by sliding into the ball. That just doesn’t work on turf.
PenguinGolf
I play pw7 love them to me there so w]easy to hit crazy control but distance ok at best soft lofts but I wouldn’t ever change them❤
I collect old blades.
Interested in tp19 1iron?
@@dougalwatts3656 Sure, I've got quite a few 1 irons. How much do you want for it? I live in Australia so the cost of postage tends to make them too pricey.
Great looking irons. Should be bagged occasionally for fun
Hey @alex,
Wondering if you think blades from 5 years ago would still hold up in comparison to this year's models? Currently rocking the 2019 t 200 mid handicapper. Wondering if I should get a newer club more on the forgiving side. T.I.A
good idea 🙌🏼
Try out a set of Mizuno Mp 68s!!
Mid handicap my arse. His must putt with a snake. What a golf swing. Well done mate.
hahaha he’s got a very good swing !! bed to show you his putting for sure
Hey Alex, can you get Josh to test the Taylormade Stealth HDs?
Yes for sure !!
Josh’s putting must be dreadful cos his iron play is v.crispy!
This video was great and entertaining! Hoping the vid gets 1000 likes so he has to take those butterknives to the course!
Haha thank you and I hope so too!!
Love a thin top line😂
I’m a 28 HC, and play p770s. I lose most my shots with wedges.
Combo sets are the way forward for everyone, tour pros put more forgiveness in at the top end, why not game something more player like at the bottom end for more club golfers
I’m trying the PXG 317T hollow bodied design irons in a couple of weeks, how do you rate these.? I’m a 6 hcp golfer Alwx
I need to test these !! so many people asking about them
So the RF irons are like going on a first date with a super model. The first date goes great and she’s all into you. Then…the second date she goes to the bathroom and she never comes back. Not that it has happened to me 😢
Haha love the analogy
I'm mid handicap player and I game the lynx VT and I think there a bargain but they are hollow head but looks like blade bargain 🎉
This culture of thinking blades are impossible to hit has got to stop! haha
Blades are always better, if you want to get better. Game improvement irons will do nothing to help you improve your game. Now, if you are resigned to not getting better, but you still want to play better, go for it.
So this is what happens when you can actually play !
That's the big difference for me I can't 🤭!
Do enjoy short game though !😅
Use them. They'll make you better assuming you can hit then decently in the first place.
PenguinGolf
His swing looks better than mine and I'm off +2 lol
lovely video 😂
Hitting of a mat is a world of difference from a fairway or bad lie.
great point 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Could you show us the irons side by side.........😂
Acceptable yes! i you like them , play them! but i dont believe they give the best result to many mid-handicappers! for me, big no! i need a club that inspires a lot confidence! i might be a high hcp though, im hcp 17. at the moment i play Wilson D9:s. and they are big and forgiving
This is a great point!!!
I don’t think Ricky ever actually played them. I’ve read he didn’t like what they made for him.
I have the hardest club in the world to hit. Gamed it for 10 years. Up for sale if you want to buy for a vid. ..... Shhhh tp19 1 iron. Mint condish
I play mp4s
If you're hitting ball first, sole size shouldn't make any difference.
How one hits a particular iron is irrelevant. If you hit a 7 iron from one set further than the 7 iron from another set doesn't make it better. The critical stat is the distance between each iron in a set. Consistent distance between irons in a set is what is necessary.
Sup alex how r u today
Hi Michael!! What do you think of the irons??
Sell them to him. He gets very good results with blades he had no confidence hitting what will he be like with confidence?
Mate , the state of your clubs are disgraceful! Reminds me of mine…
I game the Vega/J Lindberg vmb blades Alex
Pure blade but the pitching wedge is 44 degrees
There's a reason why I'm the handicap I am...
That is not a mid handicap swing.
He is a mid handicap golfer
A golfer with that quality of swing needs to forget forgiveness and start working with feedback. Advanced clubs are better in the bag. I know and respect the data, but playing hollow bodies thru the set for comfort is not going to help.
You were inconsistent with all of them. That’s why you’re mid handicap.
Why are you conning your viewers ? Your subject has the swing of a very low single digit handicap player.. he must putt with a ping-pong paddle to attain his double digit handicap
He is a mid handicap for sure! May strike his irons but the golf game is not just about that is it?
@@HowGoodGolf The golf game, especially, the handicap is about potential. Say your subject’s handicap number is 14 he has the potential to be a much better player than that. Your subject should have been a legitimate mid handicap player that does not have the potential to get any better. You know that as well as I. I have lost respect for you.
You look and sound so salty 😂
