  • In any golf iron fitting, it's important for the fitter to nail in the correct iron category for the players. Then, the golf iron fitting can progress and a single model can be identified that is best for his or her swing.
In this video, 2nd Swing video and content specialist Michael Bohnenstingl goes through a Tour Van iron fitting. As a 7.1 handicap, Michael is a candidate to transition from a game-improvement iron (his TaylorMade M4 irons) to a players irons that offer better feel and more workability.

I just went through another iron fitting two days ago. When I was last fit, I was a 15 handicap and was fitted to some Callaway Game Improvement Irons. Now that I usually play of an 8 handicap, I wanted to get fit into a better suited iron. They had me try a number of Players-Distance irons. I told them I was open minded to whatever may be best for me, as opposed to being brand-loyal to only one. As a result, they had me try TaylorMade P790, Titleist T200, Callaway Apex, Ping i525, Srixon ZX5, and Mizuno Pro 225. After about an hour of hitting, reviewing, analyzing numbers, etc, the 225's were determined to be the best fit for me. I was also extremely impressed with how good a Mizuno iron feels--something I've never experienced before. Really excited to see how they treat me this year.

Great feedback Steve! Sounds like you had a proper fitting. And you're right, there's just something about Mizuno irons that provide exceptional feel. Their Grain Flow Forging process delivers awesome results

Regarding testing what made the 225 stand out? Were they more forgiving or gave u more distance compared to the other irons?

    • @steverupert6988
      @steverupert6988 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

@@jeffyeah4256 Hi, Jeff. That's a pretty big question to answer because there were a lot of factors. To be honest, I went in really wanting the new P790's. I thought they looked great, and all the reviews I watched talked about how good they were. Ultimately, as we went through the process, a few of the irons were easily eliminated. For example, I think it was the T200 that looked way too much like a blade for me. Very small head, and it seemed very unforgiving, and my numbers backed that up (not good). Maybe I'm just not good enough for that club at a 9.2 handicap?
Then, the Ping i525 were easily eliminated too. Not only were the numbers not as good, it felt like I was hitting a brick. Compared to most of the other irons, which felt very good, the Ping felt hard to me. In fact, I was so surprised I asjed the fitter to get a new head thinking maybe something was wrong with it. But the second one was just as bad as the first for me. I should probably mention at this point that they're all great clubs, and I don't think there is any one best golf club for everyone. Rather, I think there is a best club for each person, and that Ping did not fit me well at all. Next was the Callaway Apex. I really liked the feel, and since I was coming from a Callaway iron already, I felt like I was favoring it, but I just couldn't get past that strange rounded head they use on the back of the club. The ball speed was also lower, and I'm really not sure why.
So with the Titleist, Ping, and Callaway easily eliminated, that left the TaylorMade P790' s I was wanting, the Mizuno Pro 225's, and Srixon ZX5's. From there we really honed in on the numbers. Coming from a 15 handicap where I was at during my last fitting to now being a 9.2 who normally plays an 8, they told me we need to start dialing in all of my launch, decent, and spin numbers. Doing that, the 225's jumped out to an early lead with the fastest ball speed (120.3), had the tightest dispersion, and seemed to be the most forgiving on my mishit shots. For reference, I was swinging a 7 iron with an average clubhead speed of 90mph.
Upon further inspection, I noticed that the P790s seemed to have a smaller head. I don't mean that the top line was thinner; rather, the length of the head from heel to toe seemed shorter than the 225 and ZX5, which gave the appearance of a less forgiving club, thereby giving me less confidence standing over it. But since I really wanted it going in, I kept trying it over and over. But the numbers just weren't as good, and as much as I hated to admit it, it didn't feel near as good as the 225 or the ZX5. However, the 790 felt much better than the old Callaway irons I was using, so it was a bit like splitting hairs. Thus, I reluctantly agreed to let go of the idea that I'd be getting the P790s. Just weren't for me.
Now down to the 225 and ZX5, I personally preferred the look and feel of the 225. However, the 7 iron numbers on the ZX5 were coming back slightly better. For example, I was told we want to get my launch angle up to 15*, spin rate in the high 5000 rpm range, and my decent angle at 45* (ideally) (and it's possible I'm misremembering these). The ZX5 was essentially hitting all of those benchmarks, and the 225's were just slightly behind in all of the categories. As a result, I initially thought I was going to the ZX5 . BUT, on a whim, I happened to ask what the lofts were on each iron.
That was a huge finding because he quickly noted that the 225 is a 30* 7 iron, whereas the ZX5 is a 31* 7 iron. Said another way, the ZX5 is weaker, has more loft, and is understandably creating the better numbers. So we took a different 225 head, bent it back to 31* to match the ZX5 and found that not only did it have as good of numbers, it also felt better, looked better, and seemed much more forgiving. To be fair, look and feel are very subjective and that will vary from one person to another. But that 225 Pro at 31* was giving me 119 mph ball speed, 15.4* degree launch angle, and 5764 rpm of backspin on average. I believe I was carrying it around 171 yards, with a total distance of 175 yards (on average).
But given all of this, he recommended I go with the 225 Pros, weakened one degree of loft, with a Modus 105x shaft, standard length, 2 degrees up. I was then disappointed to learn that nearly all Mizuno irons are on a two month back order whereas the ZX5 and P790's can be delivered within like 10 days. But I went ahead and 'bought the bullet,' went with the 225 Pros, and will just have to wait a few months. I think it'll suck in the short term, but definitely be best in the long run.
Hope this all helps. I'm really excited to get my new irons, keep working down my handicap, and simply having fun. Also, have you narrowed your search down to a few top choices?

Great video guys. I too have been debating the switch from game improvement to more of a players iron. My game has improved over the past couple of years and I'm getting tired of the offset in the improvement irons, toss in those outlying fliers and the decision becomes much easier. I currently play the Srixon Z545 game improvement irons and have been eyeing the Z785 or ZX7's. I'm surprised the Srixon ZX7's didn't get a whirl in this fitting. Anyhow, keep it up with the awesome content and comparisons. Cheers

Good video, thank you. I am currently looking to replace my aging game improvement irons and have been contemplating getting players irons as my handicap trends to single digits, but I am on the fence. I am not sure I am seeing the full value of stepping away from my super game improvement irons. I have plenty of distance, high shots with good descent angle and all the forgiveness the clubs provide. Shot shaping workability is a bit muted of course, but seems a fair cost for better misses.
What am I missing, why would it be better to go to a players iron? I want to continue improving, but not seeing enough benefit to potentially make the game more frustrating with reduced forgiveness. Id truly appreciate your thoughts to help me decide!

When I first did a fitting I wasted a lot of money and screwed myself up trying to produce the same speeds my game improvement clubs that were inconsistent could make. So I swung harder than normal. Had titleist CB 716 project x LZ6.5 because I hit that “best” swinging out of control. I don’t think they emphasize that enough. I almost feel like fittings without distance. Just putting up stopping data and dynamic and spin loft data to measure kick point would help people get fit without ego. At least it would’ve helped me save a fitting and set of clubs haha

Where’s the dispersion pattern? Where is he hitting it on the face? What’s the lie angle of each club? Ok he’s fading the ball off line a bit, where was the adjustment from the club fitter to neutral out the ball flight.

I’m confused. So you have tried three brands, all 7i and found the one you like the best and are now going to pay top dollar for a set. But what about the gapping through the clubs? Also what if the top end of the irons like the 4i are really difficult to hit, so maybe you have to look at a hybrid or even the t200 with this example? Also the wedges, surely they need to be tried. I really don’t understand how you can buy a full set of irons from a shop without more testing of all the clubs you’re buying and it’s one of the main reasons why I’m still using my 10+ years old di11 irons.

This wasn’t a full fitting. A full fitting takes 2-3 hour’s and nobody is going to watch that video. Plus this kid works at 2nd Swing, so he can make any changes needed. We also didn’t see his interview before the club fitting process where they ask about what irons you are comfortable hitting, such as a 3 or 4 iron compared to a hybrid. If you ever get fit for new club’s, trust me you will spend a lot of time answering questions and hitting balls.
