    In this video we take Alex, a 10 handicapper, through an iron fitting to see if we can help him sneak down into those single figures.
    Testing irons such as the new Callaway Apex Pro, Titleist T150, Mizuno Pro 223 and Taylormade P770.
    But which will come out on top??

    I feel in love with the forgiveness and high ball flight of Ping irons some 5 years ago. Never really realized that the precision of my iron game was gone. Rented a set of players forged irons while on vacation and my old iron game was back. Pings out Mizuno JPX forged in.

    I really like these fitting vids. I recently did a titleist fitting. I really wanted to like the t200 irons. Found a good shaft when I flushed it.. all the numbers were great
    But slight off center hits I was losing 10-15 yards consistently. That was way too much distance gap. Was a great fitting and the pro was super helpful like your self.
    Sadly the worst experience fitting I had was with a pxg guy who seemed bored as hell. But the Gen5 p irons were bang on compared to everything I hit. Not to mention quite a bit less during the holidays.

    Cool video, good work by the fitter for sure. Reminds me of my session a couple of years ago. I wanted the ZX5 really bad but could not deny the numbers i was putting up with the Apex 21s so I went with those. My goal for 2024 is to get back to single digit (12 hcp currently) and so I need my dispersion to tighten up. Seems like the Elevate 95s are a tad too light for me so i look forward to going back to the fitter and see if a different shaft in a 105g may yield better results. Love this game!

    good video. I just got fitted. Pretty much tried the same clubs. But I hit the apex and ping i230 the best. Went with a combo set of the apex pro but with a 130-gram shaft. On the 115 I felt like I tried to slow the swing down. Average speed was 85 (115g) but with the 130g I went up to 88 mph. average carry with 7 iron apex pro was 178. 8-PW I went with the apex mb. Love this combo set. They're pricey.

    @CamMacMaster I also tend to agree. I am good with my irons, fair with my driver, but was absolutely terrible with my 3 wood except off the tee. I also struggled with my 4 hybrid. I recently was lucky enough to talk to a very knowledgeable salesman at my local golf shop, and he recommended the King tec 21 deg 4 hybrid adjusted to 22.5 and a Ping SFT G430 16 deg 3 wood adjusted to 17.5, and it helped tremendously. But no fitter had ever mentioned that and I didn’t even know it was possible. I also believe that all this talk about high handicap is misleading because you can be very good with your driver and irons, but if you can’t get it on the green and in the hole you will still have a high handicap. I believe fittings to be essential but most amateur golfes would probably benefit more from proper lessons and knowing what to work on.

    IMO..A fitting should be broke down into 6 categories. Putting, short game, long irons, short irons, fairway woods/hybrids, and driver. I don’t think it’s fair to fit people according to their handicap. You can have a 20 handicap player who is absolutely deadly with their irons, but terrible with the driver, but excellent with putting and terrible with wedges. Therefore, they should be fit according to how they strike each individual club. Which means he could have a very forgiving driver, but be playing with a set of bladed irons, cavity back wedges, blade putter. Just saying.

    I'm an 8 handicap, bought the Cleveland XL Halo hybrid irons last year, looking for more forgiveness. Big mistake. I lost 20 yards of distance on every single iron, and the feedback from them (presumably due to the hollow face?) is non-existent. For the modest tick up in forgiveness that has been massively offset by loss of accuracy and distance. I have since moved to a set of Srixon ZX5's, and couldn't be happier.
    I think most golfers (myself included) need to acknowledge that we're better than we think we are.

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We get the numbers through the head not the shaft, then the shaft is all about dialling strike which we definitely found with the IO 👌 and we were moving away from the stronger lofted irons, that was pretty much the whole point of the fit and why it will benefit Alex. Plus none of the irons featured in this video are less forgiving than the irons you mention 👍 it's all about the right performance, forgiveness is a great marketing tool.

If i close the face even slightly too much, it pulls, spin drops, and it flies 30 yards further. For this fitting, and people who should maybe switch to more of a player's irons, is it mainly the head design, or is it the weaker lofts that lead to more spin and control?

    • @epgolfstudios

      You're absolutely right it is hard. But also when weighing up lie angle its helping to improve the miss on a decent strike, and on average Alex would slightly leak it to the right with a decent swing, so on average going upright will help with his more common miss when he makes a pretty good swing. A lie angle change is never going to matter when it comes to a hard left miss, that's just a bad swing. The extra spin will help that a little bit with these new irons, but there's only ever so much a club can do, ultimately it's still down to you to get more consistent with how you deliver the club 👍

    • @peterhammer4644
      @peterhammer4644 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The extra spin was mainly coming from him slightly miss hitting it hence the lack of distance compared to the others. And 6600 is an unnecessary amount of spin for someone of Alex's speed and delivery, and on course that would be over 7000. Serves no purpose except for losing distance. The stopping power comes through the land angle so he had the same control if not slightly more with the apex as more ball speed creates a higher peak height and more land angle

    would you say this was a typical session or did you go through more due to making a video? Just trying to set my expectations for a fitting. I must have missed it but I still don't know why game improvement irons can hurt you. Did you address this?

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah pretty typical. Also the video is obviously condensed quite a lot. Generally an iron fitting is 1.5 hours. We like to test as many variables as possible to ensure the best results. Game improvement irons are generally speaking low spin, so if you have a low spin delivery then that can create a ball flight that is too low and has a.sub optimal land angle but it will also accentuate your miss (especially if it's left) but will also generally create gapping issues through the bag and long irons that have a very low and aggressive ball flight with no stopping power. Lots of issues really. Generally for most players, especially slower swing speed, irons with more loft are a lot better.

  • @derrickcountryman9994
    @derrickcountryman9994 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah it's funny how some people can fluctuate and adjust. But aslong as direction is generally better then I'm not really concerned. The toe strike came from the swing move that created the toe down at impact, so it's a little bit of a band aid for now and he's working on it so it's a nice balance and when he works on it hopefully we can move back more towards standard

    • @derrickcountryman9994
      @derrickcountryman9994 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I ask for that very reason. I have a similar tendency. At first when the lie angle is adjusted upright its better then I just start compensating and get right back to toe down even with upright lie angle :)@@epgolfstudios

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It will be different for everyone of course. For some the stronger lofted game improvement irons would be great. All depends on how you deliver it. But for Alex the strong lofts were bad as they created too low launch and spin. That in turn
      Makes his bad miss even worse and reduces stopping power into greens. In your case I would say more to do with the set up than the actual heads. Are they different shafts? As those heads aren't really too much different

      There is no difference in forgiveness between then Apex Pro and the clubs you mention. Really forgiveness is mostly marketing, and doesn't really play out when you actually have data to back up the claims. And if we went to one of those he would have the same issues as he does now (maybe not quite as bad as they wouldn't be as low spin) but misses would be worse, gapping would be worse, ball flight in long irons worse. So no, he would not score better with those irons.

    • @NCtrailX
      @NCtrailX 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@epgolfstudios A larger head provides more forgiveness through a larger sweet spot (even if only slightly) when someone isn't striking the ball consistently out of the center. If not, then why not go back to smaller faced/headed drivers. If there were no difference, then pros wouldn't be playing combo sets to get more consistency out of their long irons. They're focused on scoring. Several pros are playing T200s (or similar) at the top of their bags based on performance, only.

      @@NCtrailX possibly if you are talking about the difference between a blade / small fully forged cavity back iron then yes you probably would see a bit more drop off on those off centre hits, but the difference in size between the T200, P790 and Apex Pro is nothing, they are virtually the same. And no one would be able to quantify much difference in forgiveness between those heads.

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that was explained in the video. And of course it all depends on the player. Some they will be great for, but for a lot of people stronger lofted rons are hurting them. Especially slower swing speeds.
      And I agree everyone should get lessons and work on swing fundamentals. Also the reality is most don't. Whether that be time constraints, money constraints or they just want to play and enjoy the game at the level that they are at. It all depends on what you want out of the game. Ultimately people come to us to advise on what equipment is best for them, and that's what we do. A lot of the time we do incorporate conversions about swing mechanics and coaching and if needed weigh that up into the fitting and advice we give.

    Problem I see with all these fittings is nobody ever seems to go back to the original clubs to compare after thoroughly warming up. His strikes got more consistent but it's hard to say if it's the different setup or because he was simply warmed up? I know it takes me at least a half hour before my swing settles down (if it ever settles down) - I'm similar handicap, but better irons wouldn't make any meaningful difference to my game...

      I do that quite often to be honest but it does depend on the scenario and how their own clubs performed for them. In Alex's case when we saw him hit good shots with his own clubs the performance wasn't very good because of how strong in loft they were paired with the head design. So regardless of consistency moving into a more player's iron would be a good move for him 👌 if he had irons that performed pretty similarly on good shots then we probably would have jumped back into his at the end.

      @@epgolfstudios Oh man, that's a bummer! Totally understandable from you all's end -- but I wish Ping would approach things differently.0
      I've found that Ping has slowly taken over my bag this last couple of years. I don't have any particular brand loyalty, but just found that the i230s were perfect for me first (the option of installing a heavier toe weight was a huge benefit) ... and then the G430 Max 3 wood in the flat-minus setting proved to be an awesome anti-hook set-up that's super easy to hit off the deck ... and then the iCrossover wound up being a great 4 iron replacement. Their flat and open adjustable hosel settings are just terrific for somebody like me who's always fighting a hook. (Credit to Titleist too in this regard! Their flat, minus 0.75 degree setting is also great for me.)
      Ping is making great stuff right now, but it's a shame their approach is making it tough for channels like you all to show it off and include it in fitting scenarios like this one and the other tests you all do. Fingers crossed they'll rethink that and get back to you all soon. And thanks for taking the time to reply to me!

    @epgolfstudios We're limited for golf shops and fitters in my city here in NZ. I stopped playing 6 years ago and was off +3, and im loookg at getting back into it. Im 44 and wouldn't say no to some extra distance if its available. Ive tried a ton of clubs and really like the Cobra Forged Tec X, even though with my mid to high 90's swing speed with a 7 iron they really shouldnt suit my game but every time i hit them theyre the most consistent. Im getting ball speeds of about 130mph, a peak height of 110-120ft, a descent angle of between 48 & 50⁰, and backspin of about 5200-5500. Do these numbers seem ok to you? Ive always hit the ball high amd struggled to knock spin off my irons so the lower spin appeals to me.

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Clint! Yeah I mean that's a really tricky situation. Being completely honest the best bet is to work on getting angle of attack more down and they will link to delivering less loft and create way more distance but from better players clubs that will gap better. The thing I hate about the stronger lofted irons is that loft gaps are so small between long irons and massive between wedges. But yes from a ball perspective those numbers are ok. Only thing to be weary of would be the spin getting a bit too low in the longer irons. I did a video where I show how much difference there is when hitting down on an iron Vs hitting up. I think it was the "Custom Fitting or Lesson" video. Have a watch 👍 but generally in your case I like to go in the middle. Play an iron that still has distance in mind but the loft gaps aren't so mental. So like Mizuno 225 or the P790 or even the standard Forged Tec model

    Interesting watching this as ive just been through a similar process myself. Trying the same clubs over a couple of sessions to minimise the influence of swing fatigue during the process. With my pro, and GC Quad, i tested various combinations of club head and shaft.
    I loved the look of the Ping i525 but they performed no better than my current Stealth irons, even though i was hitting them sweet as. I tried Titleist T150 and T200s, but saw negligible improvement.
    I tried Callaway Apex and hit them well but similar negligible benefit observed......and then got my hands on Paradym. Ridiculously tight dispersion, and a minimum of fifteen yards gained (longest was +32yds) overvthe two sessions.
    I then took my current 7 iron and a couple of those clubs to the range and repeated the process in a more 'real world' scenario. The results on both the Toptracer and Trackman ranges were consistent with each other and the GC Quad data. Paradym was hands down the best club for me.
    Moral of the story: trust the data rather than the fitter unless you know your fitter and trust them, and hit plenty of balls before settling on a decision.

      Hey Tomas, sounds like a great process you went through to find a very good result, which is brilliant to hear. With the Paradym obviously being strong lofted irons as long as the peak height and angle of descent numbers are optimal, and the gapping all the way throughout is good then that's brilliant. Those are the 2 biggest issues I find with strong lofted sets, but as long as they do fit your delivery and speed you should be fine. I hope they go well for you and help you improve your scores 👌👍

    He’ll not be off 10 for long if the rest of his game’s as good as his mid irons

    For T150, Titleist calls it the “faster players iron”

      Alex can get a little bit tilty at times which comes from a bit of a sway. We did have a bit of a chat about that though the fitting and it's something he's working on 👌 but yeah it can certainly lead to low point issues causing thins and fats - and for most people causes a bit too much loft to be delivered. Alex's loft generally wasn't too bad as he has a slightly stronger grip which counteracts the move a bit

      Hey Grogesy. Unfortunately it's impossible to say. I don't look at irons in handicap ranges because that's really the worst way you can look at irons. The biggest thing is how much loft do you deliver at impact. If you are a bit of a scooper than a set with stronger lofts will be better for you. If you are someone that hits down a lot and takes off a lot of loft at impact then you need to be looking at a more traditionally lofted iron set, regardless of what your Handicap is 👍 and no brand is any better than anyone else, generally a 32* 7 iron, they all perform pretty much the same, so Mizuno 223, Titlesit T150, Srixon ZX7, it's just all about the head that clicks best with you, that's the biggest thing that matters. So get the loft right for your delivery and then test as many heads as you can around that loft 👍
