I compared the Macan S to the X3M, the SQ5 and many others. I decided to drive the Macan first so I had a benchmark. After driving the Audi and BMW, it was clear why the Macan is the benchmark. I put in my order yesterday for a Chalk on Bordeaux red Macan S with sport exhaust, air suspension and chrono package and I couldn't be more hype. It absolutely passes the Porsche test and will be my first Porsche ever!
Just out of curiosity how exactly was the macan a benchmark? Is it the much slower 0 to 60 compared to the x3M, is it the 12 mile difference in the quarter mile slower, which is bus lengths. Is it the non forged Audi engine Compared to S58 which is essentially as close to a racing engine as you can get in any class. Is it the longer stopping distance from from 70? Worse sounding exhaust and less grip.

Figures a clown who knows nothing and can't mention any fact to back up his statement would say something so dumb. We went with the BMW. It just offers the best of both worlds! It offers so much fun and packed with technology and luxury. Yes the ride is a bit stiff but well worth it for the handling. Also the price tag was a lot better than Porsche
Both are great vehicles with pros & cons. However, one clear difference is definitely price: In configuring the 2023 X3M 340i (nicely equipped), the MSRP with destination was $68k. Using the same approach, the Macan S was $81k (not too crazy with options).
I’d probably pick the Macan too. It’s not as practical as a BMW but it’s way more practical than the 911. The BMW ride is too harsh and I don’t want to get used to it. I like Porsche’s old fighter pilot button panel much better than the new flat black scheme but I can live with it to get the new engine. The back seats are tight but my dog fits. Either car would be one that I’d look back at after I parked it but I think I’d gaze a little longer at the Porsche.
I have zero problems with the Macan and Porsche in general, I love their designs and their undeniably dominant performance. However, I am massive BMW fan boy and would have to take an X3 M. The Macan is still a beautiful car though, just one man’s opinion!

I have had all of these, the X3M, Audi SQ5 and the Macan S. I would forget the X3 altogether. By far the worst of all 3. If you want to save money and need a little more space in the back then the Audi SQ5 is a bit better than the Macan S in that regard. If rear space and money is not an issue then you can't beat the Macan S.
I worked very shortly for Audi Service department: The SQ5 does have the air suspension I remember playing with it while testing cars for customers. The off-road mode is the highest and sport is the lowest, with normal being in between height
I wasn’t sure since I never reviewed one with air ride. The X3 M40i I know for sure it doesn’t
@@SamCarLegion kinda wish the air suspension is for cars that actually need it (sedans) than suvs that already have higher ground clearance. To my recollection S5 sedan doesn’t have it or even the rs3 or rs4 coupe
Macan is the best in class but followed very closely by the X3 M40i and the GLC43 AMG.
Had a macan turbo which was lost to a flood and tested everything else and the X4Mc/X3Mc blew my mind. Your expecting a "500hp" suv, what you get is something that feels much more like a car+ 3.2 second 0 to 60 and most important, although the suspension is a "harsher" its so much more communicative, I can feel the texture of the road through my seat. The macan is supremely capable but fun and capable are two different things.
As for the video, he is right the x3 m40i has a higher trap speed so its faster by I think 2mph and quarter mile and the turbo spool quicker so it's quicker off the line too.

Correct, having owned both and daily driven both, I'd pay more than 10k for a x3m over even a macan gts. Forget about price. The pulling power, handling, engineexahust sou d and most important, experience, the x3/x4m are on a different playing field.
I agree I'm a huge Porsche fan and own a 911. But I'm looking at the x3m and the m40i over the macans.
@@memememine1 As someone who owns a 911, you'll appreciate it much more than the average. I'll put it this way, when everything is in sport plus+, it comes closer than any other suv to giving you a sports car experience(outside of a urus obviously)
Came back to this video after driving my friends loaner Macan S last night. I have a X3 M40i (2018) myself. We had to look it up because the Macan S felt sluggish to me. But it has 20 more HP than my X3, but about 100 nm less torque. You feel that. Turbo lag is much more noticable too. The Macan's interrior is unmatched tho. So is the steering wheel response. BMW is too artificial in comfort or too stiff in sport. Porsche got it right for sure. Also better gearbox and suspension in my opinion. But I'm driving the X3 on runflats so maybe that's not helping either. Space ways I think the X3 is more practical than the Macan. I had a Q5 (2021) before and the macan is smaller than the Q5 even. I paid 50k for my X3 and my friends Macan was 100k (brand new) so it's a bit apples and oranges and also 5 years between the tech. Hope this helps some people
We have a Q5 and brought her in for 2 warranty items and Audi gave us a SQ5. Well now the wife loves that vs her car and so do I....but I am looking at the Porsche but that's out if its smaller than the Audi and I am really liking the X3 M40I. About the same amount room as our Q5 but the M40I is quicker than the SQ5 and the interior quality is much nicer...and service is 30 minutes away vs 1 hour. We have had 3 Q5's and they have all been flawless, and one was over 100k miles...hard to switch..
@@Jassman3536 I had a Q5 2L TFSI before this X3 M40i. Drove the SQ5 loved it too and quite frankly I think the audi interior is a little nicer than my X3 M40i. But that's just the spec I guess as I have a 50% leather trim (more practical) - but the X3 is a more practical car in terms of space and handling imho. It's lovely. Can't go wrong with it.
I did test drive both the Macan S and the X3 M40i because I want to buy one of these. In my experience in the X3 M40i the acceleration feels much faster or at least much more instantaneous. So I do agree with your observation.

Great review. I am picking up my x3m40i the end of the month and am excited to compare to the IS500 I sold. I am hoping the transmission is a bit more responsive without having to sacrifice the power. Did you notice any big performance gaps between the IS500 and the m40i?

The X3 M40i will blow the doors off the IS500 from a dig, would be close on a roll however.
The IS500 is only slightly faster than a 330i but drink fuel as quick as an M car. And it cost the same as M340i

I have a Macan S 2016 with 90,000 miles that I bought brand new. Still runs like new and looks beautiful in and out. It is a pleasure to drive it every day. BMW is a nice car but a Porsche is a Porsche.
How’s long term maintenance been? Big issues? I’m debating between the macan and the x3m40i
I just ordered a loaded 23' X3 M40i and I think the Macan S hit the same price by just adding a spare tire. A similarly spec'd Macan S is as expensive as the X3M. The Macan would be a better competitor but they downgraded the performance.
Performance is upgraded in comparison to the last one, this is technically same engine as GTS
basically Porsche gave the Macan line-up an engine upgrade by dropping the Macan Turbo at the top of the hierarchy. The new Macan S gets the old GTS engine, while the new GTS gets the old Macan Turbo engine.
The only thing lacking is the base-spec 4 cylinder Macan didn't get an engine upgrade. It would be nice if the base Macan got the mild e-boost that the Audi A4 got.
The GTS at this point is not really a better option

The Porsche interior is way better, test drove the BMW, bought the Macan :) You need to keep in sport for throttle response to match the BMW though. Gas mileage, not great :) Skip the air suspension, the standard adjustable shocks on the S is good enough. You don't need sport chrono. If you keep your options light it's the same price as the BMW, but way better resale and driving experience.
A macan s with a free color(white) with simple options like panorama roof and cooled/heated seats is 75k. Which is about 3k more than the starting price for a X3m which obliterates, not only the the S but the GTS too.
You had to skip options to "afford" the Macaque. The new X3M Competition and the new interior with the optional two tone sports seats are just as nice if not nicer.....
The interior of the BMW is light years ahead. The Porsche has a clumsy shifter from the 2000s, lots of confusion buttons, small and thin steering wheel, no proper virtual cockpit, and literally Audi Q5 seats.
@@Tireburner7 the only thing the x3m wins is in power, then is a cheaper product, dashboard quality is cheap, steering is dumb, for me a soccer mum suv with power, tech and no idea of how to manage cornering without a super stiff suspension.
@@bill9629 not sure what your experience is but I highly doubt you owned both. I owned a macan turbo and now a x4m. 1st, "no idea how to manage cornering" the x4m has higher cornering grip, way less lean when the weight transfers quickly from side to side, even when macan was in Sports plus. The steering transmits more information than the macan(barely), macan steering feel on center was better but overall the handling is better(even by the numbers) so what are you referencing??
Also, use facts, unquantafiable statements can't be proven or disproven. "Soccer mom suv" what does that mean? The 3.2s to 60 or the 118 trap speed in the quarter mile. The .98g on the skid pad, the crazy stopping distance. The x4m does everything better in terms of giving you a more Sports car experience than a macan in terms of sensations and by the numbers. In addition to one of the best seats in the game, plus mean sounding exhaust(in the U.S market atleast,, European version quieter.) None of what you said makes any sense.
I got one specifically because they still have an analog dash.

in europe the X3 is a midsize SUV and the Macan a compact SUV, not in the same class.
I found the suspension on a 2019 X3 M40i way too stiff for a daily driver. I will be trying one with adaptive suspension.

I had a 2018 Macan S, 2021 SQ5, 2020 X3 M40i and 2022 GLC43(2 at a time). The Macan is a great car but between those 4 competitors, the M40i is the best in my opinion. I ordered a 23 X3M in February to replace the M40i and took delivery last week. Enjoying it!
but the ride is nut cracking hard in those bmws

I have a Macan Turbo, just a great all around SUV. I like the BMW's interior tech better, but the Porsche is more aimed at driving, with fewer tech distractions - yes I just said I like the BMW's tech better but it is distracting. The Porsche you get in, the motor roars to life with a great cold start sound, and off you go. The Turbo has a great exhaust sound even without Porsche sport exhaust. The BMW has all sorts of assists for this and that, and BMW has made the suspension of the M models very stiff, too much for my tastes. The M40i is the one to get if you go BMW, the X3 M is quite stiff.
Porsche does not allow drag race because they lose. Porsche is the slowest but great at handling around the track.
Not off road but deep snow. I tried the X3 M40i with adaptive suspension. Comport mode greatly reduced the rough ride. However, I found the exhaust noise at highway speed a bit too loud for long distance driving.
Seriously? I can’t hear the exhaust at all in Comfort mode on the highway in my X3 M40i.
I like the longevity of the Macan design. It hasn't changed much in 10 years. To many that's a bad thing, to me I think it makes it more timeless and will age better, IMHO. I own a 2009 MINI and I like how that's aged

Compared a 2019 X3 M40i and 2020 Macan S on the same day. Agree RE suspension. However, the adaptive suspension on the X3 in comfort was a big improvement over sport mode. Overall the rides were very different. A bit more connected to the road with a less stiff ride, the Macan reminded me of a 5 series sedan. As thought is was lower to the road than an X3. My Macan did not have the air suspension. I did not like the off center small speedometer, " Oh Crap! I'm going 90mph!"
a little bit closely inside and a little bit expensive but at the end it´s the most sporty compact performance SUV of the world with the Porsche badge. And you know, if you want to drive a Porsche? you must pay the price.
The problem though is that it's not the most "sporty"

@@alengreen589 According to Porsche the Macan competes with the X3/X4 and the GLC. Ive had both and the trunk sizes are about the same and the rear seats are a little smaller in the porches but that's about it. Very similar sized cars. The macan is much larger than A GLc so it's not a true compact in the sense of the word.

The most annoying thing is you can't just flip through your favorite stations on the radio. It just scrolls every damn station. I'm not sure how Porsche dropped the ball so hard on the radio side. Also no auto car play for Android. Cheap cars have these features.

@jandejong8209 if you have the home screen open you can add a screen with the list of favorites and click each station.. The steering wheel button or the touch screen next button don't cycle your favorite station. Google it it's a known issue on the Macan.
I was really excited to go look at an X.3 M competition before I bought my second Macan GTS just last year and thought that I would end up buying this X.3 M competition but the moment I sat inside of it it felt like a faux vehicle like a model of what you would be getting just not the quality of the actual product like those dummy phones they used to have at wireless stores. But when it came to the X3M, it was the actual product and it felt cheap and poorly executed.
If the only thing you care about is being a fraction of a second faster in a straight line than a Macan, which is a vastly more refined, well built, comfortable small suv with higher residual values and is actually designed and manufactured in one facility in Germany from a brand that's a tier above BMW......
Then hey, the X3 is definitely the vehicle for you.
Plus BMW as a company isn't that all particular about who they approved for financing which is evidenced by their financial situation as of the past decade and how it's affected their offerings to their customer base which has been in rapid decline during that time and their constant redesign of cosmetic features keeps their customer base in a constant feeling of having something that's old even when it's not and that causes feeling up to satisfaction almost instantly after you purchase this vehicle or finance this vehicle whatever you do to get the vehicle within a year and a half it doesn't look new anymore and they do that because they don't want you to be happy with your purchase longer than maybe a year because you will feel like you have to come back and put yourself in a bad financial situation simply to impress your neighbors is that sustainable for anyone really?
I came from a macan turbo to a x3m and a x3m is not fractionally faster, a macan gts traps at around 111mph, a x3m at 119. That's an insane difference, one is what a 13 year old m3 does and the other is what a c8 corvette does. Also outright grip, brakes, exhaust sound are no where near the x3m. A 0 to 60 in 3.2s is also in another league. Where exactly is the performance advantage(which is the reason your buying one of these)

I don't understand why there's no mention of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Better looking, sounding, steering and faster. And stop with the reliability issues. I've had 2. They're as reliable as the German stuff if you maintain them properly. Best having, most fun SUV in its class, hands down. I also own a 2019 911 GTS and still love my Alfa. I would take it over the Porsche and the BMW.

Your dead on, just commented, had a macan turbo which was way quicker than this but compared to my x4mc it was on a different planet. The x3/4m are too much car for any of the macans
macan s starts at just under 70, then option to the moon like all Porsches… the BMW starts 10k less

@@thomasferrarojr.9772 depends on how you want to look at it, from a numbers point of view or experience. By the numbers, the x3/x4m traps 10-11 miles faster thank the macan s. That not a big difference its a huge difference. A 108 trap speed feels like your getting pushed into your seat a 118 is standing parked on a highway and having a dump truck fly into you. It's massive. Thats about the same as a c8 corvette. On the handling front it pulls almost a 1g at the skid pad, more than any macan. It's stops shorter than any macan. Its sounds 5x better than any macan(the u.s version with unrestricted exhaust). The macan seats are a joke compare to thr M(just Google and look at them, let alone experience them). The self driving on the macan was useless, punting you from lane to lane, the x4 essentially drives itself on anything more than 90 degree turns. The tech better and more options for the price.
Now from an experience point of view that's where the real differences is. Forget about the engine, the sound and granularity of what the suspension can communicate is on a different level. The macan is supremely capable but makes most drives boring because it tunes out to much. There's too much isolation and you need to do crazy things to get any sort of excitement. On the X4Mc I can feel the texture of the road I'm driving on through. Now of course you can get a sports car that will provide way more of what i just said, but if you're forced into an SUV due to heavy winters, amount of people in your family then there are few that will bring you closer to a sports car experience than the x3/x4m comps.

Didnt look much faster than a Volvo XC60T6. The one with the 3.0L Turbo inline 6. I have a T6 and I was actually not impressed by this Poosh after this video. I can get a better launch brake boosting a stock Volvo XC60T6.
Not sure what your trying to communicate but a spongy Volvo xc60 shouldn't be used in the same sentence as a macan. You can't watch a video and decide you" can get better launch boost" macan traps at 107mph. The xc60 at 97mph, that's bus lengths in a drag race. So not sure how your not impressed with a car that can do a 4 second run to 60 with launch control and think your car that does 0-60 in 6.1 is somehow better. Not even starting on the handling, brakes, sound.
the biggest issue is the price - i know Porsche as a brand is a level above BMW but the Macan S well specced is the same price as a X3M and im sorry no way im taking a Macan over a M

That 0 to 60 is misleading, that's using a 5k clutch drop that no owner wants to subject their car to( I know I didn't on my macan turbo), the 106mph trap speed tells a different story, the m40i is a faster car and the macan certainly doesn't sound better, not the this 2.9l turd not the 3.6 that I had in my turbo. And once again, at least in the u.s the macan s with simple heated and cooled seats cost more than a x3m, which mauls a cayenne turbo let alone any of the macans.

I am cross shopping the X3 M40i and the Macan and I can’t for the life of me figure out why the price difference is so high. The Macan S is almost the same price as the X3 M.
