Unbelievable Performance of Porsche Macan Base on Mulholland Drive. Better than X3 M40i

- In this video, I take a look at how the Porsche Macan base performs on Mulholland Drive. This Macan Base is an entry level Porsche model that came with 21 inch wheels and 295 wide rear tires. It's handling characteristics have blown my mind.
I also compare this Base Macan to my X3 M40i and discuss which one handles better and in general how Macan is different than BMW X3.

Where Macan really shines is when you corner and drive it in Sport mode to hear quick transmission shifts
I found the Macan to just be so smooth due to the PDK. The M40i shifts are super fun but overly aggressive. The way the Macan drives is sublime. Handles better than my 3 series. I just wish the back seat wasn’t so small in the Macan :(
Thanks for your comment. Honestly I expected a bit more engaging driving from Macan. Yes it does really well on twisty roads, in fact better than X3 M40i as it handles like sedan and not a crossover. But when you just cruise along the streets and highway it feels VW or Audi to me, there is absolutely no distinct character in it, it only shifts faster due to PDK. I almost got disappointed in Porsche brand until I finally recently drove 911 and realized what Porsche is all about. So maybe Macan GTS is a way to go, not sure. X3 M40i on the other hand is more dramatic, more fun, louder, roomier etc.. Hopefully i can bring Macan S on the channel at some point to compare, but if you are leasing you can lease X3 M40i nicely loaded for less than Base Macan. BMW a win here for me.
@@100miledrive yeah I test drove the old 2016 GTS then the M40i back to back a few years ago and was completely underwhelmed by the Macan. Months later I tried a 2016 Turbo which should be similar power to today’s GTS. Again it felt oddly pedestrian. I’m planning on giving a 2022 S a spin to see if it can excite me. Last thing I tested was the BMW iX EV. Best vehicle I’ve ever driven but am unsure an EV fits my lifestyle at the moment
@@charlesbcraig Thanks for sharing. Well I am glad I experienced Porsche 911 recently, because Macan did not leave any exciting impressions that I was expecting from Porsche. It is interesting you mentioned BMW IX. I am definitely considering that car for the channel. With all the incentives they have really good deals on them. And yes switching to EV sometimes can be challenging for different reasons. My cousin has IX - he loves the car but now saying he is missing the engine sound and transmission shifts :)

2015-2017 macan turbo loaded or x3 m40i? which would you get?
Honestly not sure, never drove Macan Turbo. What I do know is that between Macan Base and X3 30i I would take X3 30i, for some reason I found Macan Base only fun on the twisty roads, otherwise spending a day with it didn't impress me especially it's engine sound was kind of weird. Transmission was nice it shifted quickly. X3 30i felt nicer overall and more upscale. I will bring Macan S to the channel to compare to X3 M40i and that will be interesting to see. I love Porsche as a brand and want to explore it more.
You should drive an S or GTS, steps it up quite a bit. The base isn't bad though.
Thanks for the comment. Yes definitely want to try out Macan S and see how does it compare to X3 M40i. Does it have this much drama and how much character does it have overall. In Base model I wanted more even though it handled really well.

Hi there, thanks for your comment. In my video I was not really directly comparing apples to apples. This was my first experience with Macan and I started with a Base version. I personally have X3 M40i and that is why I reference it in the video. With Porsche pricing and BMW discounts lease payments for Base fairly loaded Macan will be same or even more than X3 M40i. To me the biggest surprise in Base Macan was - how boring it was in day to day driving compare even to Base X3. You can really appreciate Base Macan on twisty roads where it shows it's handling capabilities.
A more direct comparison would be X3 M40i to Macan S - based on the specs. If I get a hold of one I will make a video.

It seems like you are bouncing around quite a bit… partly the roads and more of a sports car feel. BMW X3 is definitely designed more for comfort, a better daily driver and less of a fun weekend car. More Luxury SUV
Thanks for the feedback. So, on twisty roads base Macan will even beat my X3 M40i, but in day to day driving I found base Macan pretty boring. It literally feels like my VW CC (same family group). BMW X3 even 30i feels a bit more alive, and more fun overall. And X3 M40i is a car with very strong character. It is firm and punchy, but not that comfortable. The conclusion is I want to get Macan S and see if it feels more exciting overall than the Base Macan. I like that Porsche has many options including optional Air suspension for firmer cars.
