Today I drive the Porsche Macan T. Aimed at the keen driver, this is still a £55,800 two-tonne SUV that has the same engine as a Golf GTI. How can Porsche justify it, and is this even a real Porsche? Let's find out!

I had one of these for a little while - I loved it but the kids hated it - the back seats are so uncomfortable for them -especially the middle - I sat in them on a drive and agreed - so I was faced with a choice and going fully against my better judgement on such things I decided to keep the kids. I have regretted this decision ever since!

We test-drove the base Macan while shopping for similar 2.0T luxury commuter SUVs (X3, GLC 300, Q5, etc). The chassis, steering, and gearbox were in an entirely different class, and the cockpit is well-optioned without being cluttered (or worse, gimmicky - I’m looking at you disco lighting MB). It was enough to get me in the door with the brand. What sold me was the 2.9T V6 the Macan S borrows from the GTS. While there’s a stated performance difference, in reality it’s slight, meaning the S might be the best value in the entire Porsche lineup. The amount of car you get for the money is staggering.

@@paulbugoni2846 Yeah, I've heard that too. As a BMW fan, the older-gen BMWs had it in them to truly stand out as the Ultimate Driving Machines. Shame they aren't like they used to be in driving feel and handling. Like, don't get me wrong, I think the X3 M40i is a wonderful all-rounder. Just wish the steering had more feel and communication coming through the palms, while not tiring the driver. It seems BMW has understood that "sporty" means hard suspension and heavy steering alone. The old models just held up brilliantly in terms of ride-handling balance.

I’ve got one on order and it will be my first Porsche, coming from a GLC (diesel).
The test drive I did was eye opening on what a proper driver focused SUV can do on the road, power is not everything (especially whith speed limitations) but this handles beautifully and has just about everything you can possibly want on an open road.
A simple tune could make it go to the 300hp you talked about, but not sure it is needed! It’s a lot of fun for a SUV and as you said, it depends on your expectations. Mine were blown away and I can’t wait for it to arrive 🤩

I just bought the base Macan for my wife. She loves it and does not drive fast or care about speed so she is happy. I get in it and the first thing I think of is "this needs more power". But hey, she's happy and therefore it saved me money. Also the price delta is different here in the USA. It is $6000 more for an S over a T and 12,000 more! from a base to an S. Macan GTS is my daily driver... and boxster gts 4.0 is my nice weather car. You're absolutely right about the Macan being just about the best daily driver you can possibly buy. I think the Macan S is a actually even a better value than either the GTS or the T if optioned correctly such as with the relatively cheap red or beige full leather options which also gives you deviated stiching included. Air suspension is nice to give you softer comfort and sportier sport.

  • @DJLaro
    @DJLaro ปีที่แล้ว +27

The Macan T is a great car and what we ended up buying after testing the Base, T and S.
For me, I absolutely love the deviated stitching interior and the seats. I paid 4k to get deviated stitching on my 911 (in addition to $4k for the upgraded leather interior).
For me, whatever SUV you drive will be compromised because of the weight. The T is just fast enough to be fun and the lower weight on the nose vs the S makes it a much more agile car (IMO). The T also feels quite a bit better on spirited drives relative to the base. The base sits higher and you can feel the T is a lot more planted.
Consider spec'ing a T and a S to truly compare the price. For me, the S would have cost $10k more than the T after options so the choice was clear.
Having a 992 C2S and Macan T, both are very enjoyable cars, for different purposes. I don't regret not opting for the S.

Most probably yes, which is why I hate automotive journalists who review sports cars and claim 'they are the best', for the either couple of minutes they drove it, or in the 4 6 month ownership they had it while they daily drove a Yaris. Such sports car are typically weekend cars for the rich; not that it's bad, but anything beyond 400 horsepower as a daily becomes a pain in the ass, more than anything else. Porsches are just these cars. They are sports cars meant to be driven fast. he market nowadays is all about luxury and comfort more than anyhing else, and hence why the 911 isn't as demanded as previously, or the Cayman and the Boxster. If Porsche figures out the sweet spot, price included, they will become successful. BMW figured it out all too well.

You are measering things with two different point of views. Of course one part of Porsche as we know it today is kind of a SUV manufacturer, who is using its profits for making the best sports cars on the planet. Porsche is doing very well with this kind of strategy, and with their more and more electrified lineup of worldclass electric SUVs and performance machines like Panamera and Taycan, Porsche will even have a more brighter future.
"Porsches are just these cars"... What???
Oh man, as if Porsche would be the only carmaker which is producing 400+ hp sports cars. You are telling absolute crap, dude!

It's a good thing then that compact suvs aren't pointless on the street vs their estate/hatchback brethren. For most things, in fact, they are strictly worse thanks to weight, air resistance and higher center of gravity.

Thanks James, I finally get to use the word stoichiometric in a post! With this being a lowly 2.0L, Porsche probably mapped the engine in a way that makes a lot of it's torque low down and thus trying to mask the cars heft and lack of capacity. The problem with this is that small boosted engines tend to suffer from low speed/ medium to high load knock (predetonation). Thus stoichiometric A/F mixture isn't run and the car drinks fuel! Actually looked at one of these in 2015, 2.0t (237ps back then) had a 12 month waiting list. Macan V6 close to 3 years! Bought a F15 X5 40d instead!

Ive driven my Macan T a little over 2500 miles and I can say I'm pleasantly surprised. Mine does have some nice equipment but far from "fully loaded". That means I have Air-suspension (must have IMO), Panoramic roof (Not a must have for me), PDLS Plus (Don't know how good the standard lights are but mine are among the best Ive experienced), 360 surround view (save the money and go for just the rear-view camera) and adaptive cruise control (I never use CC so don't know if its any good). I also have the same interior as this one which I think is superb and people who've been riding in the car has complimented the nice fabric in the middle of the seats and the quality of the interior overall. What I don't have is the upgraded sound system, but the standard 150W system. Works fine for me, it sounds way better than any other standard system Ive heard, especially VWs, but would maybe consider upgrading to the Bose.
Im really impressed with the car overall, and the 4-cyl ea888 engine works better in this than any other car Ive driven with the same engine IMO (probably thanks to it being mounted lengthways and connected to the excellent PDK). Would recommend the car to anyone who´s in the market for a well-put-together SUV which rides and drives really, really nicely.

great review james! Spot on. I have this exact dilema. I'm changing my 6yo Macan 4 cylinder now, but the reality is that when you spec an S with the necessary extras (wheels, sport seats, exhaust, sunroof, etc...) its not 1k more but rather 8-10k more than the T (at least in switzerland). That coupled to the crazy CO2 taxes here, I think the T is probably the one for me!

I have just sold my 2019 Macan S after 50,000 miles as my daily driver. It has been great, so much so that I am collecting a new Macan S next week. It will have light grey leather interior and Panoramic roof.
I have driven the 4 cylinder versions too. They turn & dance nicely, but need more poke. They are not such good value as an S (value using Porsche metrics of course).
I have shoved my non Sport Chrono Macan along the roads James was driving with indecent enthusiasm and it is brilliant at that kind of driving.
I’m glad he liked it, I do too.

The value proposition is pretty market dependant.
In Australia, the T is only 3% greater than a Base. The S is another 20% more.
Our cars are also somewhat differently specified with everything from the larger fuel tank to comfort access standard already.

I think people miss the point of the T….it does what the gts does without the power. It can be driven hard and loves the corners and back roads. It’s a proper driving car of the suv world, it doesn’t have the power, so what! It’s well damped and the suspension is excellent. The whole argument of T vs. S is silly too. £500 more gets you as S, but the S is then short of 7k of options. No GTS suspension but has a v6 so you can go quicker in a straight line lol. It also pains me to see people delete all the T parts like the unique seats and decals and wheels. A standard T in the U.K. is about 12k over list and could rise further with this EV nonsense and macan electric, when people will want to stay ICE. My other car is a 718 gt4, like a geek they match in crayon 😂

Very enjoyable review! As the owner of a 2023 Macan S, I think your descriptions throughout your review are spot on. For anyone who enjoys driving their car using a "sporty touch," you really need to move up to the 6-cylinder, twin turbo models. However, the comfort and handling of all the Macans are excellent, especially if you get one with air suspension.

Just done 7000 miles in one of these and absolutely love it! You're right about the four-pot motor - 300bhp and a fruitier exhaust as standard would have helped to distance it from the base 2.0 - but the T's dynamics are superb and its unique chassis/torque-split set up really benefits from the weight saving over the front wheels. (This is one of the lightest cars in its class, which - unlike the V6 models - means I can tow Boxster/Cayman sized cars on a lightweight alloy trailer for work without getting into tachograph territory.) Taken in isolation the price does look a bit steep compared to the S, but factor in the T's standard spec and likely depreciation (i.e. low lease payments) and this might be the cheapest premium SUV ownership prospect built by Porsche or any of its rivals. I share your contempt of coal-hole black interiors, James, so I ditched the part-cloth upholstery and opted for the Black/Bordeaux Red two-tone leather interior. Same superb electric GTS seats, looks fantastic, cost just £176!

I was wondering about the lack of weight with the 4 cylinder, that’s interesting. I think you’ve probably got the best spec, I think 260hp is enough power to have fun and keeping your license in the UK. Also, I’m curious about whether you have the air suspension fitted as I’m wondering whether that could soften the ride even more compared to the adaptive coil overs. I often drive through towns which is full of bumps

    • @iainini
      @iainini ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Adamlllllllllllljjjljljjjjj Spec of our Macan T is close to standard (+ bargain leather upgrade, memory seats, tow-bar and and reverse camera) so it's on standard springs with PASM which is soft enough to smooth out the worst urban potholes and speed humps in comfort mode. Only beefs with Macan T are minor electrical gremlins, which never occur in presence of supplying dealer (front parking sensors regularly detect phantom obstacles when driving at low speed and rear seat belt warning occasionally chimes when seats are unoccupied) and the hopeless reverse camera. Only spec the reverse camera if you need it to help with trailer coupling or don't mind wiping it clean every time you plan to travel backwards. It's mounted close to road level, doesn't retract when not in use and is always obscured by water/dirt.

I had a Diesel S Macan on steel springs when it first came out and kept it for 90,000 miles it was very good everywhere but became a little bit long in the tooth. MPG was unto 44mpg and around town 23/25mpg. I then bought an absolutely fully loaded Macan Turbo (2.9L petrol) from Porsche Centre Swindon as my everyday car which around town returns 15-17mpg but on a run at a true 70mph gives me 29-35mpg which is frankly astonishing. I always use the super unleaded fuel usually from Sainsbury's but lately fill up with BP Ultimate which has been giving me the highest MPG figures. (is this a well known phenomenon ?)

I absolutely agree with his rant against boring interiors. I'm currently looking at a used McLaren, either a 12C or 650, and they all have a plain black interior. This is a supercar, it's meant to be over the top and extrovert, it has doors that open upwards, most of them have bold colours like Volcano Red or Mantis Green, it's meant to exude surprise and delight. And yet every single 12C or 650S currently on the used market, with only one exception, has a black interior.

The T is for me with Its distinctive looks, its driver focus, and its good performance.
It’s a slippery slope with Porsche and after driving the Base, T, S, and GTS, the T was the best fit for me as our family vehicle. It’s quick enough around town and I love the way it felt from behind the wheel. However, I do agree that tuning it to the 315 HP Golf R power level would have been just right to slot it comfortably between the Base and the S, even if that meant a slight bump in price.

These are brilliant cars. A mate has a very high spec 2016 S Diesel which he's had from nearly new, been in it plenty and have driven it and honestly I'm not sure there is much out there that makes for such a good daily driver.
It drives like a sports car, far more so than you'd expect given its Q5 roots (Porsche worked wonders on the chassis), is quick, the PDK gearbox is other worldly in terms of speed of change and choice of gear and feels special in a way a Q5 could only dream of, even at 7 years old. I'd say literally the only thing that lets it down for me is rear space as it's not as good as you'd think it would be.

I bought a Macan Turbo back in 2018, I had to have the fire breather, and its quick, but a little thirsty on petrol. I've driven base models and I think they're quite good - the handling/ride is almost a little better - its very tossable as its lighter and feels a bit more nimble. The GTI 4 pot turbo motor is good, and tuned for the Macan. Its a little sluggish off the line, to address that leave it in Sport mode and it drives very well.

I love motoring, but have barely driven anthing the past decade. Drove the original Renault Espace, my dad's car when I got my license. I liked sitting up high, but not that SUVs are the norm, does that still have the same added value over a hatchback, sedan or wagon? Loved the miiiiildly sporty Mazda 323F I drove to the junkyard prematurely (oh, it wanted oil?).
OK you sit up higher, but what does a Macan do for me otherwise, over say an entry level Panamera, Jaguar XF Sportbreak (I love that for looks and interior), Mercedes E, etc? Maybe a very basic question, but is an "SUV" worth it, if it's really a lifted coupé? GLS, that I can see. A theoretical R-Class, on a modern chassis and drivetrain, oh yeah baby! But a lifted Golf with a Porsche chassis and interior?

I presently have a 718 Cayman T so am familiar with what you get as part of the spec. At first I thought it wouldn't make any sense on the Macan but it does. It's the usual formula, take the base model and add the driving toys and some agate grey trim, wheels etc. I love the cloth interior in my Cayman T so if going for the Macan T, I would spec it and am not bothered with having cow skin all over the doors or dash. The T does seem to be decent value when you look at what the S charges for similar options. If you want full leather in the T, it's far cheaper than full leather in the S. Same goes for wheels. The T wheels look nice but I'd rather they be 21, even though that goes against the grain of what an SUV is all about i.e. comfort. If I was spec'ing the T, I'd keep it standard and maybe add metallic paint and the painted trim on the exterior to get rid of the black plastic as it clashes with the grey. For a daily driver, the Macan T ticks all the boxes, sure it could do with some more power but I'm sure after the car is 3years old, a remap would be achievable.

The Macan is a brilliantly handling SUV (I’ve owned two of them) It’s not without its flaws.. poor room for rear passengers for example, but it’s still good enough. Arguably a Golf is more practical. The Cayenne is also excellent (I’ve had three of them) but the minute you step back into a Macan, you feel the difference in agility.. bearing in mind that a Cayenne makes an X5 feel like a bus.. the Cayenne itself is still an excellent handling SUV, which highlights just how good the Macan actually is. I own a MY2023 Macan GTS and as someone who spent far too much time on the Porsche configurator I thought I would add my opinion. The S does make a good value proposition compared with the GTS depending on the spec you choose… the difference in cost between the S and GTS was around £1500 when I applied my spec to each car. Add to that the fact that the all Porsche GTS products seem to hold onto their initial value better than the S models I couldn’t not buy the GTS.
Take a look at 4 year old, low mileage T’s, S’s and GTS’s… the T and the S are about the same value and the GTS is 10-15k more expensive so it may be better to pay more upfront to lose less in the end 🤔 ask me again in 4 years 😂
