As a Porsche service advisor I would like to tell you that when it comes to the timing cover leak it is not a crazy expensive repair. Porsche originally mandated that engines be taken out of the vehicle in order to stop the leak but have now published a fix that allows a Porsche technician to replace the broken timing cover bolts (that’s the culprit) in 2-3 hours. I have broken timing cover bolts in my desk at work to show people lol I hope this gives a little peace of mind should you get a leak from there. Don’t let anybody take the engine out it’s NOT necessary EVEN by Porsche’s official factory warranty regulations.
Do you give the Macan S a thumbs up on buying a used one (1-2 years old)? Would you say the bugs have been worked out of this Porsche model? Many thanks!

My 2016 Macan Turbo just passed 90,000 miles. The transfer case was replaced under warranty last year. I plan to keep this wonderful car as long as I can. 7 years old and it looks and drives like the day I bought her. I replaced the brakes 2 years ago and tires last November. This year (barring something out of the blue), I expect to pay about $300 to have the oil changed and I have no other planned expenses.
I just passed 92,000 miles. Still love my Macan and have no intention of doing anything but enjoying driving it as long as I can keep her in good shape. My expenses so far this year are - gasoline. @@poohmissU
I changed out my door switch without removing the door panel, its easy just take your time and use a sharp edged plastic panel removal tool. The replacement took 15 minutes. Also the timing cover leak can be addressed by removing the aluminum bolts and changing the left and right sides with steel, this is the new Porsche approved method. There are video's on TH-cam for this. BTW, do your own oil change for 110 bucks, Filter is easy to get to once you remove the plastic undercarriage pan.
the hardest part on these cars is resetting the oil service lamp, the stereo only turns it off for the current drive, you need the software to turn it off till next oil change, i have rosstech for my audi but you need to get a porsche one as the rosstech audi won’t do it, already tried on buddies

Happened on my 2016 S and the dealership fixed it under warranty at the following oil change. I had every common problem with that car but the dealership and factory stood behind it, even dropped in a new transmission after the warranty expired. Could not believe what I got for trade-in on my current 21 GTS.
Partial information so do take all this to heart. Do research more than this video. I’ve had my Macan S since 2014 NO issues special order car and a dream to own. Number one get PPI before purchase. 😊
We have had 2 Macans, both needed a transfer box replaced. Original warranty was 5 years, Porsche extended this to 7 years as it became a known problem. Both were done just out of the original warranty before Porsche extended it. Both were not fixed at Porsche (Porsche quoted £3,000 to £4,000, but we had them done at a specialist for around £1,500) Porsche refused to refund even after the warranty was extended as we didn't repair it through them. Fabulous cars though, just about to collect a new 2023 Macan S. The warning signs of a transfer box failure are very slight juddering when going slow and through the lower gears.
@@PJ-hi1gz it's the only problem we ever had and they've fixed it for the future. Overall it's the best car I've ever owned and most reliable and I'm old enough to have owned a lot of cars. It's a 4 x 4 that makes you feel like you're driving a sports car.

@@PJ-hi1gz It wasn't a bad experience either time, really. The 2016 Macan S was the first iteration of the Macan model so one expects a certain number of recalls. I was taken aback at just how many there were, though. Each time the dealership contacted me, scheduled the maintenance, picked up the vehicle and brought me a Porsche loaner for the day or two. When the transmission went just past warranty the service manager called Germany and convinced them to cover that, too. The 2021 GTS has been fantastic. Only a few, small things that have all been rectified by the dealer. The adaptive dampers, air suspension and Sport + setting make the car much quicker and easier to drive at speed. I would not hesitate to recommend the 21 GTS to anyone.
Don’t forget to change the transfer case fluid. If those things break it’s an annoying expensive fix. The dealership only charges $375 for a fluid replacement so a local independent shop should be much less.

Good details on Porsche which requires a lot of research on what options do what. Carmax for example has no clue what Sports Chron mode is and how much more it helps handling/speed, so if you can find an S there, you might grab it. The Macan S is a really great car, superb handling, decent acceleration. But once you start running into $$$$ oil changes at Porsche and other maintenance, it's not so great after warranty runs out.

Picked up a 2015 turbo with 80k miles. After reading forums on how costly the repairs were and dumped it a month later. Porsche was even charging $300 for an $89 Maryland state inspection
Like BMW etc, they know they can charge a premium for the same stuff and they do. It's almost insulting. Like really, you want $400 to change the oil?? $600+ to do a maintenance, where you basically replace some filters?

The drivetrain feels great but it’s defective from the factory. Total disappointment. Sold it at 55K ODO Even the 22 and 23 Macan still have TCC leaks and the PDK will break
The PDK is the best period . every other manufacturer have done there best to copy Porsche and some have gotten close but Porsche engineers have outpaced the others

Hey theres actually an updated part. Where the upper timming cover screws break or come loose. It solves the leak. The tbox is soft. Front trailing arm bushings can't be prone to failure. Sunroof drains need to be cleaned often. Coolant likes to leak from a little pipe under the intake. Where new ones need injectors if you run crappy gas . Theres cylinder scoring so ask for a bore scope visual. Definitely buy one used as a CPO from a Porsche dealer. Or New
I can't decide what's worse, the fact that you own a Porsche and yet you still say "porsh" or the fact that you think 15 min to remove and reinstall a door card is labor intensive. 😂

I was looking for a performance suv and had been looking at the glc43 until this came up. Are these cars high maintenance. The price is pretty low for such high performance and the porsche name especially when I look at used 2016ish models.
This an ollder model as the 2022 forward does not have those haptic style buttons in the center console. Love my 2022 S with sports chrono with no issues yet.

You can replace the timing chain cover bolts without removing the engine but it's tricky. You take out the airbox and then the intake pipe and yopu can see in a mirror the offending timing chain cover bolts. Then with a micro ratchet with a t25 or t30 bit you can unbolt the broken bolts. I replaced mine with stainless steel allen head bolts with brass washers and lots of antisieze.
@@faridtavakolmoghadam the heads you can unscrew with your fingers or a torx bit in a micro ratchet. The back end of the broken bolt should stick through the case toward the rear of the car. Maybe you can unscrew that nub out the back with your fingers. If not you can try to bond a nut onto what’s sticking out (don’t glue it to the case!), or you can do tiny turns with a needle nose vice grips. The passenger side is easier because you can turn it farther per grip of the pliers. The drivers side sucks!
I had just had Porsche dealer do the cheaper fix on the timing change cover bolt switched out (2 bolts 1500$) but within four months they said it was leaking again (sat in my vehicle for six weeks never saw anything on the floor) and the dealer now wants 12,000$ because it’s out of warranty, to change out the whole thing. I don’t believe most Porsche dealers have experienced technicians anymore. I’m gonna take it to an independent high end european specialist tomorrow. Will see what happens… Will never buy another Porsche again. They just can’t provide good service. A real disappointment. I have the 2015 Macan S only 65k miles. And I guess you could say I’m a grandma 62. 😊
Hi. I loved your video. Thank you. I am considering a 2024 Macan S. Can I expect the same issues that you addressed in your video? Buttons breaking off, oil leaks, etc....? Does the base Model have the same engine issues as the S model? Thank you! I havre never owned a porsche.
The 2024 S does not have these same issues and with it being new you have a warranty so you will be fine for years to come. Buy it and enjoy it. Macan S is a twin turbo V6 the base model is a 4cyl from the golf GTi
Appreciate your question. Just bought a '22 Macan S recently with only 7600 miles on it. Love the car, but most questions on P sites relate to older cars. Also have a '02 911 Cab tt I've owned for nearly 10 years, now with 100k miles on it. So I'm familiar with the "joys" of long-in-the-tooth Porsches. Love both cars but need to know any issues with the Macan, now and when the warranty is over.
I owned a 2015 Macan S for around 4 years. A common fault with the early models was transfer box failure. This happened to me with less than 30K miles on the clock. The window switch broke on me too. I was constantly resetting the tyre monitoring system as it would randomly think I’d fitted new tyres. Apart from that it’s was a reliable car. Eventually I decided to get rid. I felt under pressure to fix every little things like supermarket dings etc, just because it’s a Porsche! The front seat bolsters became marked up and saggy. I only did around 10K miles a year and went through 3 sets of tyres Punctures were a constant occurrence maybe because of those big fat tyres picking up screws and nails. I always felt an impending sense of doom that one day eventually something major would go wrong and I’d have to sell one of my kidneys to pay for it. If you’re on a budget don’t buy one. Simple.
That's why I got rid of my BMW. I always felt like I had to keep it in showroom condition, because it's looks were the best part of the car. Also, anything done to the car, cast 3X more than any normal brand would and most garages wouldn't even work on them. You need to reprogram it, when you just replace the battery.
Why can’t you rotate the tires side to side? Yeah, you’d have to pay to have them taken off and mount them and balance them again, but you could do it.
I had a second set of tires and rims and stopped going from winter to summer tires because they increased it to $300 each time. Ridiculous just using all weather but of course I’m a grandma 62!
Good aye man ! I live here in Japan and those GTS here on the market are very low mileage ( under 50k ) and well taken care of by the Japanese. also the price is quite good . Would be a trouble free buy under the above mentioned circumstances? Cheers 🎉❤
the same for BMW7. I had to replace the arm controls every 2 years cause the bushing fails (mechanics says just replace the complete arm control). This is because the car was so heavy and those arm controls were weak points
WOw thanks so much for the insights, so much i didn't know about macans and such a great video. THANK YOU SIR. I appreciate it. didn't even know so much of what you listed , makes sense !

Ok I agree with most things but VW DSG in manual and PDK in automatic or manual cannot compare, the time lag is notacible in VW. It is almost immediate besides turbo lag on Turbo, GTS, or Turbo with performance package, but the shift is immediate and you can jump down 2/3 gears right away. So like driving 5th gear, you can go 3rd and in VW you can't it goes 4th and then 3rd....It's super slow compared to a porsche on a windy road trying to pass a car on short bends. Otherwise great review :)

I call Bullshit on that ! No one could prefer a Macan to a MYP !!! I’ve never owned a Macan .. but I’ve driven plenty and I owned an X5 MSPORT before my MY …
@@maxflight777 What's not to like more? Better ride, better looks, better driving dynamics, better quality control, can fill the tank in less than a minute. The tech and acceleration in the MY is outstanding, but how can you honestly drive long distance when comfort is lacking considerably. I was considering the MY but the suspension and ride steered me away. The Macan does seem to be one of the the best overall small sporty SUV you can buy.

My wife and I cross shopped both, ended up going with the Model Y Performance. We drove all of the Macan variants and TBH they all were a little underwhelming. Sure they're great cars, just not as exciting for us.
Hey Gjeebs. Still watching you. An off topic question to leverage your PPF connections: I just read this on the Teslamotorsclub : "removing giant sheets of sun baked ppf in 5-10 yrs doesn't sound fun. It'll cost at least half what you paid to put it on, and i'll be interested to see how many put up with the liability of pulling paint up with it. Have you seen old ppf pulled off cars? It's a mess. But that's someone else's problem... " Your feedback will be appreciated. Thank you.
The base Macan also has launch mode. Just saying. Anyone with a wrench or socket set can do their own oil change for under 100.00 . It is the easiest car I have owned to do an oil change at home.
OMG! I was one of those owners (although not a grandma) who had no idea what I had in my panamera; never knew what to do with those little silver thingies on the steering wheel. But it always was a great car to drive. I wanted it for the luxurious camel-leather seating! Not interested in the mechanics. Thanks for explaining the manual shifts!
This is unnecessary video focusing negatively with personal opinions: it is well known that Porsches are expensive to buy and maintain, nothing new there- buy BMW, Audi or MB if you’re looking for cheaper options. Fit and finish is always excellent in Porsches and this glitch on handle bar is probably a one-off isolated quality slip. I don’t feel this video provides well-balanced perspective for potential buyers. (I am a Macan owner.)
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but there is a porsche service bulletin that makes the timing chain cover bolt fix significantly less expensive.
@@Gjeebs yeah, thank goodness. It can still be somewhat expensive depending on labor costs (700-1300 at my 2 regional dealers) still beats an engine out job!
Yes, I had that done paid $15-$1600 in four months later I just found out that didn’t work! Now the dealer wants $12,000, as it is out of warranty a 2015 Macan S with 65,000 miles. So I am taking it to a high end, European specialist tomorrow to see what they say…. never buying another Porsche again they just do not have experienced service technicians any longer. Perhaps I wasn’t clear I just had it done (afterFactory) lije Dec 1 and leaking again within 4 months …. So the “new” bolt sys did not hold. And they are now telling me at the dealer 12,000 since it’s out of warranty as a 2015 Macan S. However, I no longer trust the Porsche dealership so I will be taking it into a European auto specialist tomorrow to see what they have to say. It could be, that I was not told the truth, or they didn’t really do it properly. I did wonder if the new bolts they were using in December we’re still the cheap aluminum or what. I believe I asked and they said they weren’t, but you never know. Thank you for your video. At least now I know why if it’s set for six weeks while I was vacationing in my garage and did not notice any drips. The culprit is the underbelly cover that Porsche uses. Convenient because then you can control when the issue is found. I think it happened to me late because I did not reach 60,000 miles until 9 years later, due to my being retired. I purchased it new in 2015.
Love when you said Porsches are daily drivers. Hope the Cayennes don't have all the aluminum bolts and major oil leaks the macans have. I also hope it's safe to buy a 7 year old Cayenne with 50,000 miles. And get 200,000 out of her.

I purchased a 2019 Macan S with 5,000 miles ...the brakes sweak each time ..I had it checked at my porsche dealership and they see nothing. It's so loud its embarrassing when stopping. Any thoughts
These come with an aggressive brake pad/sport pad because it’s a SPORT SUV. They will tend to squeak because the compounds on the pad is more aggressive to give better stopping power. Super common on sports cars. Should had researched know what you got yourself into. If you wanted a quiet boring suv Macan S is not it.
I had the same problem with mine. Easy fix. Speed up to 70 ish mph and put on the brakes hard to get you down to 15 mph. This will clear the squeaks up. You’ll have to do this from time to time but it really does work.

The base Macan has always been a dog. A vehicle for soccer moms that married well or rich college girls. They get to have the cache of driving a vehicle with the Porsche name but won't note that it is too powerful for them. Not that they were ever going to clip an apex. Had a 2016 S and now drive a 21 GTS. The GTS has had almost no issues while the S had innumerable defects and recalls. We should expect better from an engineering company.
The plastic window buttons > same on the Cayenne... have an '11 S...rear passenger (driver side) > expect this from the likes of a Suburu, Mazda, etc...but a Porsche ...c'mon
Sadly, this is NOT a PDK transmission. Porsche calls it that however it is the Audi Steptronic. Not a very good gearbox but the programming used by Porsche does make it a nicer experience. From the 4 cylinder through the OMG Macan, the transmission is exactly the same with the exception of the clutch pack.
What about the timing chain cover oil leaks? I notice you never mentioned that but then you have probably never removed the belly-pan either. Porsche was smart to put that there as it hides oil leaks from most people.

The passenger side is easier because you can turn it farther per grip of the pliers. The drivers side sucks!

Does it have a problem with hydronic suspension issues ?
Why can’t you rotate the tires side to side? Yeah, you’d have to pay to have them taken off and mount them and balance them again, but you could do it.
That’s what you do but they still wear out faster than if you were doing a traditional 4 tire rotation
@@ronn68 absolutely but I’ve always disliked the paradigm you can’t do anything. It’s an option and better than no rotation at all.

What year is your car?
Before 2021 I’d say judging by the middle console
Ok I agree with most things but VW DSG in manual and PDK in automatic or manual cannot compare, the time lag is notacible in VW. It is almost immediate besides turbo lag on Turbo, GTS, or Turbo with performance package, but the shift is immediate and you can jump down 2/3 gears right away. So like driving 5th gear, you can go 3rd and in VW you can't it goes 4th and then 3rd....It's super slow compared to a porsche on a windy road trying to pass a car on short bends.

None of these, oh Hi sir, you are due for your 30K maintenance, that only be $1K lol. Any repair, costs 3X more than your highest estimate in your head. I was almost considering getting a Macan, but then you mentioned the $450 oil change and reminded me of the crazy premiums they charge.
Have a 2017 S PDK transmission went out at 70 thousand miles. The dealer does not repair only replace they hold you hostage. The price is 20 thousand. So be aware when buying this car its expensive to fix.
Best Macan review I have seen! Really helpful. Great job thanks!! 👍🇬🇧
Not sure which is worse: the window buttons or your footwear
What's worse? Your comment.
Mean and unnecessary. Wow

Looking at a GTS with 82,000km fully loaded with 21in wheels all around, original owner outdid himself
Very informative video. Been doing a bit of research for a few days because I came across a beautiful Macan S. I happen to be in the market for a car and this car looks great. Has 107K miles, and I plan on doing a pre-purchase inspection with a local mechanic. I don’t mind the big maintenance budget that comes with performance, so I am very interested in the car. Is there anything else you would do before purchasing? The auto check came back with a score of 91.
After speaking to a mechanic recently he said if you want a macan get the 4cyl models. The engine is bullet proof and easy to maintain. You lose power but you have a comfortable sporty SUV that can run for a long time
@@Gjeebs yeah or just get a vw golf, where that engine comes from.
To me the only reason to purchase a macan s is for the performance get the 3.0 twin turbo you won’t be happy with a 4 cylinder. Might well purchase a VW put around in.
I have a 2015 macan s full spec 104,000 love it. Ac just stop working but I have a after market warranty
The pdk on Macan is not the same as the one on 911.
Dude you’re so funny. MY PORSCHR IS TOTALLED
Bro, plastic pry tools are made to not scratch...
I’ve never seen a grandma driving a Macan. Also, never broke my window button off.
I guess Im a Grandma (62) 😂
After watching vids like this one I think I will keep my Lexus.
We all know you were just going to keep the Lexus anyway with or without this video buddy, so don't get delusional. The Lexus is a cheap sewing machine compared to the Macan.
@@Euro316 Yes! My Lexus IS a rare 2017 GS F V8 sedan with 470 HP. I bought a new Macan S in 2021 thinking it would replace my trusty Lexus. Turned out I liked driving the Lex better. Sold the Macan during the pandemic and didn’t lose any money.
@@MrMustangrick If that were true, you would not have made this comment on a Macan review posted 5 months ago on a 2016 model acting as if you are in the market.
The Macan and GSF are not in the same segment either. The Macan is a CUV, the GSF is basically the equivalent of a 5/7-series or E/S-Class.
Weird comments and thought process.
@@Euro316 whack job troll.
😂 great idea
Had the timing chain cover / oil leak issue with my Macan S. Luckily, the vehicle was still under warranty because they did have to drop the engine in order to do the repair. It never ran the same again when I got it back. Traded it for a base Macan....Carmine red. Vehicle looks great but the 248 hp is weak. I plan to sell it this year . Going electric this year.
Great video!
Me: *Clicks on video after buying Porsche Macan*
So far, no issues after 2 months of ownership. Wish me luck lol
The plastic window buttons > same on the Cayenne... have an '11 S...rear passenger (driver side) > expect this from the likes of a Suburu, Mazda, etc...but a Porsche ...c'mon
Excellent video, much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
None of these brands make their own gearbox. Zf is the manufacturer
Fabio … yep 👍
Source? If Porsche and everyone who drives it says it's a PDK I'm inclined to believe them

And some say the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is unreliable? I like the Macan, but would sooner have the Stevio Quadrifoglio.
Wait your mechanic told you to drive it HARD?
It’s hard to believe mechanics
What about the timing chain cover oil leaks? I notice you never mentioned that but then you have probably never removed the belly-pan either. Porsche was smart to put that there as it hides oil leaks from most people.
I did mention it and mine is in good shape luckily took a look with the mechanic
I agree, hides leaks. That’s what it did for me when sitting 6 weeks in my garage and never saw a drop on the floor. Great camouflage.
I wouldn't own a Porsche if I couldn't do all the maintenance myself. The prices charged for maintenance on a Porsche are obscene.
