Thanks for all the work you put into these videos to explain them :)
👏👏
You know, you could say the framerule is like a certain mode of transportation....
Oh I've heard of this "frame rule" thing... Birdo spits out a bus every 255 frames.
Bruhhh
are you sure she doesn't poop out a bus every 255 frames?
@@raghavpatel720cloaca jokes are funny...
For more information, google "Birdo frame rule 34".
i think i like the joke, but im confused about the 255, is the 255 referencing something or is that just a random number?
"Mario is Mario."
I freaking knew it.
Mario mario and luigi mario
@@xaviersavard6343wha
It's a Mario.
No, Mario is The Great Gonzales!
Personally I would've NEVER guessed that Mario is Mario
One of the greatest combinations ever is when Summoning Salt makes a video about the speedrunning history of a game, and Bismuth makes a video explaining the world record.
Don't forget their epic battle for the "explaining frame rules WR"! Love it!
You had me excited like there was a new SummoningSalt video on SMB2 to watch but it's 2 years old lol. I was like what a Christmas gift, 2 Salt videos in 1 month!
That hasn’t happened recently

Bismuth >>>>>>> everyone
Nice! I already knew every trick in the run but didn't know half the information about how they worked, or what other timesaves there were. So it's awesome that even someone pretty familiar with the speedrun can still learn a lot. Thanks!
oh wow good to see you in the comments! big fan!
I used to be on TASvideos and I discovered the hyperspeed carpet glitch back in the day. It still feels awesome to see it still being used in runs today. I only have about 4 claims to fame in speedrunning, and that's probably my favorite one. Hearing my name mentioned in the Summoning Salt video was incredible.
I use to do it as a kid
Good find
That sprite edit at 21:59 got a huge chuckle out of me.
that headphones warning is legendary
I was looking for this comment it's honestly perfect
"LOUD reaction" "that was a good run :)"
I absolutely love how like, 50% of the tricks bismuth explained, were also explained mid-run, the ladder jump and it's timings, the cycles of bosses, grabbing the shy guy after the POW hits it, etc, it made me smile every time I heard him explain something bismuth had explained, or was about to, while also playing the game faster than anybody else ever has
He’s not only speed running the game, he’s speed running the explanation
to me its the 'nonchalance' of CoolKid...i mean, i guess the name fits, but he almost sounds Bored with his explanations...like that episode of Ed Edd n Eddy, where Double-D (aka "88-fingers Edward") absolutely shreds on a lap-steel, even though he 'despises' the instrument...
@@rtyuik7 it's what you get with someone with a truly nice and patient personality is made to perpetually answer similar questions about the game he plays at a top level every day
We wish you a merry Bismuth
We wish you a merry Bismuth
We wish you a merry Bismuth
And a happy new vid
I'll allow it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it
*clicks like*
You, sir/ma'am, are legendary
It's crazy how many times you see these clips of WR runs and their splits mention this runner named "me" who has the WR. Me has gotta be almost as good as that TAS guy when it comes to holding world records for literally hundred of speed games.
wait that’s me
Bro "me" is such a legend, even people outside of speedrunning wanna be "just like me frfr"
me is a goat
It's-a me!
It's such a subtle thing, but I really appreciate how every time you transitioned from a gameplay segment to an explanation segment, you made sure never to cut coolkid off in the middle of a word/phrase/sentence. It's just nice!
If you don't know what a bus is, it's kind of like a framerule. The player's counter starts at 0 and goes up to 255 buses, then resets. At 127 buses, it comes to a framestop and Egg spits out a birdo for the game to throw and pick up.
You're welcome for my understanding.
did you know that Super 2 Mario Bros. is actually a reskin of a game called Doki Doki Doki? apparently America of Mario decided the original 2 Super Bros. was too Famicom for hard audiences so they just slapped the American on a Japan they made for the game in Nintendo brand. thankfully we later received the original as Super Lost Mario Levels: The Wii on the Shop Bros Channel.
27:46 The fact that he risks there the whole run for nothing but style points makes this guy even greater. Cool speedrun and very enjoyable documentation, thanks! Looking forward to your next work!
“That was a good run.”
Gets a world record
Headphone warning
@@eastsideeric2231what does this have to do with smb2 speedrunning? trump wasn't even mentioned in the thread.
they don't call him coolkid for nothin
@@eastsideeric2231
TDS is second only to TND.
@@eastsideeric2231 far funnier is the fact that Kim Jong-Un spends his country's tax dollars playing World of Tanks, and I'm not even joking
I’d like to imagine Birdo is the driver of the framerule bus in Mario 2.
Wonderful video as always, Bismuth!
I think I know why he’s called “coolkid.” What an incredibly chill person. 😆
BTW, I noticed in the credits you did the music for the episode yourself. Very nice! I was just thinking how the background piano music was really good.
He always does the music in his videos afaik
31:02 Actually I posted the rocket glitch on my site back in the 1990s, but it's awesome to see it being capitalized in speed runs this way (along with several other findings.)
I should have been more clear in that the rocket glitch wasn't known to save time in speedruns until recently.
Thanks for the headphones warning at the beginning. bro was way too loud, glad i was able to turn it down in time
Coolkid has always been a great speedrunner. Between Megaman 2 and Mario 2 he has the best runs in a sequel.
The Mario 2 ending theme on piano is so amazing. I was so hyped to hear the piano tracks for this one!
15:18 You're telling me that I've casually been performing a speedrunning trick ever since I was 5 years old?
20:56 I also noticed that as a kid. It's why I favored Luigi for levels with a lot of vines or ladders.
23:31 I also did that trick as a kid.
26:15 I remember accidentally discovering this trick as a kid. It blew my mind. It took me a while to understand how to replicate it.
What an amazingly chill world record stream.
*The quote "Mario is Mario," uttered by Bismuth in the year 2023, encapsulates a profound poetic genius that transcends the simplicity of its surface. At first glance, these three words may appear as an unremarkable assertion, merely stating an obvious fact about the iconic video game character, Mario. However, upon closer inspection, the profundity of this statement unveils itself. Bismuth taps into the essence of identity, self-realization, and existential philosophy. In affirming Mario's identity with such succinct precision, Bismuth touches upon the very fabric of human existence, prompting contemplation on the nature of selfhood and the profound simplicity inherent in embracing one's true essence. The quote resonates with a poetic beauty that lies in its ability to provoke introspection, inviting individuals to question the layers of complexity they often associate with identity and recognize the beauty in acknowledging and embracing the core truth that defines each individual. Bismuth's declaration thus becomes a testament to the capacity of seemingly straightforward statements to carry profound philosophical weight, unveiling the poetic genius embedded in the simplicity of self-affirmation.*
I seem to remember that Mario digs faster, but I could be wrong.
Mario actually has a higher regular jump (4 blocks high) compared to Toad and Peach (3,5 blocks). @@BlitzerkidSix
This reads like an AI generated text.
This is truly "Mario: The Man Vs. Mario: The Idea"
Perchance.
Bismuth is a pretty cool element but a even better Channel
Really appreciate this style of explanation. The side-by-side or overlayed comparisons are especially helpful.
CoolKid is my favorite speedrunner. He's topped or been high on the boards for so many games.
Wish he'd stream more, but I know how it is. Hope you're good, CK. ❤

I love these videos. They make my day. It feels like something that will get me the last question on who wants to be a millionare in 20 years. Something like "Who was the first person to hit 3/3 weathertankos in MK64 Choco Mountain on real time. A) Mat Turk B) Abney C) Synister D) Phynn
Holy shit, this video was so well made. The editing and writing was really impressive. I’ve seen Bismuth’s name a ton in the last 10 years but just found this channel now thanks to the algorithm. Stoked to chain every upload now.
The transitions at 12:02, etc. were so slick. Excellent video as always!
I love your videos. Your piano playing is great. The visualizations are amazing. You do such a great job at explaining these things regardless of how much or how little pre-existing game knowledge the viewer has. I know way too much about Mario 64 thanks to you. Thank you for making these types of videos, I always enjoy them.
The headphone warning at the beginning got a big laugh out of me. Great vid as always!
This world record was amazing, some of the tricks here went crazy
I'm into classic megaman speedruns, I just want to say how much I admire Coolkid. The guy is an extremely talented speedrunner, he makes it look easy. Amazing guy.
Bismuth is an essential Element to this community.
the fact the only thing realistically holding a sub-8:10 back is the implementation of the Wart glitch is pretty fascinating. Can't wait to see that barrier broken down~!
Brilliant video, as always! I deeply admire your commitment to scoring your videos yourself; The first piece, at the intro, is very clean and well-performed. It sounds pretty difficult to play well; I'm to understand you arrange most of your playing by ear, often without sheet music at all, which is very impressive indeed.
i really love your narrative and story telling :)
thanks again for another great explanation video !
I love how in depth your videos are. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Gotta respect the ending going under Wart when the whole run is on the line
Look, style matters. You can't NOT run under Wart.
The level of detail of how things work in speedruns is awesome. Absolutely love this channel
I just finished the Mario 64 one, and now this is out. Godlike timing on my part.
This is incredibly well done. I love content like this. It's entertaining, informative, and you can really tell Bismuth is incredibly passionate about making these videos.
These videos are so great-very informative, and the animations and overlays that he provides show the story just as well as he tells it with dialogue. A lot could be learned from watching the speed runners themselves, but so many of the tricks and strategies are acronymed and short-formed so much that I need Bismuth to break it all down.
And I like coolkid too; very unique in that he doesn’t wake up my entire neighborhood when he sets world records.
18:25 Even if this is basic SMB2 speedrunning procedure, it still never fails to impress me that you can just jump across such huge gaps without having to wait on birds. Such a perfect visual conveyance of, 'Nope! Doin' it my way!!'
Great video again. Always appreciate the piano music which is as good as the editing.
Awesome, awesome video. I didn't know any of this stuff about SMB2, and it was a really nice breakdown to show how things work.
Amazing arrangement as always Bismuth, keep up the great work
Super excited for this great analysis video! Thanks for uploading! Might comment more later!
Absolutely loved your piano playing this time!!
Awesome video, your speedrun breakdowns are excellent
Hi Bismuth, your videos are getting better and better, thanks for your amazing job
Merry Christmas and happy holiday season to you and family thank you for another year of TOP TIER content, amazing
Another great speedrun explained doc. Thanks, Bismuth!
Mario 2 is probably the most underrated Mario speedrun
This is a rad breakdown, good job!
I love when you give examples of glitches or tricks separate from the actual run!
Excellent video as always, Bismuth!

There is one NES/Famicom game I know where pressing up and down at the same time is not only allowed, but is a crucial part of the RTS. The reason it's allowed is that the game is so incompetently programed that if you plug in the four-player adaptor, the game cannot tell the difference between controllers 1 and 3. It's one of the best speedruns I've ever seen.
what game?
Incompetent is a bit harsh
@@ncrecc6040 Hoshi Wo Miru Hito.
You need to see it to believe it.
Great video. Watched that agdq 2010 run live, the good old days.
such a great explanation of framerules. I wish summoning salt would try and include a slightly more "advanced" explanation like this and then use the bus analogy. Great video as always
Bruh. Your loud headphones warning at the beginning 🤣 too jokes.
Wonderful job! As always, the music is my favorite part.
Ah. Thank you Bismuth. I really needed this tonight!
TAS Luigi off a ladder: I must go, my people need me.
“Headphones warning LOUD reaction” I love that you started the video with trolling us that way!
your videos are the perfect videos to fall asleep to, so happy you posted tonight (meant as a complement, they are relaxing)
thank you for explaining all these mechanics, this is very interesting
I only now just realized that this game makes the blue toad the 1st playable toad.
Excellent breakdown as always.
Great video! Just the right amount of detail :)
That loud sound warning at the beginning was brilliant.
6:28 Will never stop being funny lmao
Dude's excitement at new WR reminds me of chibi's "i like that jump" pop off
As someone who played this game as a little kid, there was something shocking about seeing Wart get smashed off the screen like that, had no idea that was possible
This game is an iconic game, it’s been a while since I play it. And I’m glad you break it down.
I've waited for a long time for this video. Thanks Bismuth.
That smooth piano version of the mario 64 file select music was great
11:03 “Here, Coolkid does a very questionable grab”
Take that out of context, I dare you.
Eye- opening, insightful.
Merry Christmas Bismuth and Thank you
Another banger, much love bismuth!
"The limits are never where we think they are."
Thank you, I needed to hear that today.
This seems like a really fun run, might try it out. Maybe ill make it into the summoning salt video in 5 years. "The quest to beat coolkid"
Obligatory appreciation post for Bismuth's work in playing and recording the excellent piano soundtrack for this video. Thanks a lot
once again another fantastic video! thanks bismuth!!
I've been watching a few of these, and just wanted to say thank you! They're interesting and informative, especially for someone like me who really isn't into speedrunning at all, and a straight up view of a speedrun would leave me bored and confused.
Also thank you for pronouncing Bros. as Brothers and not Broze.
I feel like a lot of people look over the fact that you also make all of the piano music in the videos yourself! Another great vid!
I respect a speedrunner so much who goes for the shwag even at wr pace
I know the piano covers have been in videos for a long time, but I still cant get over how beautiful they are. They seriously elevate these vids to the next level for me
Edit: Especially "Mario Medley" and "down the wine river". Love those ones :p
Lovely video! I learned a lot 😊
That run is so good. I hope he starts streaming again soon
Thank you for the headphone warning at the start, my headphones are made of glass and it would have really hurt if they broke.
I already know this is gonna be very fun
Great video as always. Also, coolkid seems really chill
The opening theme music always seems to make me calm and happy. An overall good time during my childhood.
great video as always
2:12 This made me laugh, well done
you are a legend, i love your videos. supporting from brazil
brilliant as always
