I remember watching SethBling's SMW speedruns when this strat was found. It was really exciting at the time and this was a great video explaining the run in detail. I would love to see a series on how the 0 exit run evolved over time, as seeing the route go from ~5 minutes to ~40 seconds was entertaining and the techincal details of ACE are interesting. That would be a pretty big undertaking though.
6:00 I just realized, when Bismuth says to skip ahead to 9:10 if you're confused, a little line labeled 9:10 appears at the bottom of the video. If you drag the scroll bar to that point, you get taken to 9:10. Smart!
Your work is impressive, and it is both entertaining _and_ pays due respect to the people setting these records, all while being highly informative. Thank you for your hard work, it's fantastic.
I just wanna say i love watching these on loop to sleep. Thanks for the dedicated documentaries and quality content that leaves me watching before bed, and early in the morning. Never gets old.
I had a brief foray into PS1 romhacking where someone walked me through how to read the assembly instructions and what they're doing to the values in the register in order to do what I wanted to the game. And from that experience, I can definitively say that all old console devs, and the people who hack those ROMs to mod them or figure out glitches are, in fact, wizards and witches. Assembly is actually a modern interpretation of magical runes and if they wanted, we would all of us become that Charging Chuck that Yoshi eats. There but for their mercy go we.
wow! it's clear an incredible amount of work went into this. super accurate and impressive! there were so many things I never knew about super mario world, despite having hacked it for years.
As an 11-exit runner myself, I've often tried to explain parts of this speedrun in a way that is accurate but also concise and easy to understand. It is a LOT harder than it seems, particularly with cloud glitch, and I always end up either going way too far into detail or just glossing over some parts to avoid confusion, and I'm never quite satisfied with the explanation I give. This video is the best 11-exit rundown I have ever seen, and it's not even close. It explains everything very clearly and somehow does so without oversimplifying the mechanics going on behind the scenes, remaining consistently thorough across each and every level. Heck, I even learned some stuff- I had no idea that there were tactics to reduce the lag in Bowser's disco room using your score! This was a super enjoyable watch, and I'm glad to know I now have a great reference to whip out if I need to explain anything. Thanks for the high quality stuff, I know that a ton of effort had to go into making it.
This is one video that I appreciate to watch with subtitles, the hidden commentaries are the best. I have only seen that kind of dedication from TerminalMontage and Technology Connections.
These types of videos are so meticulous and lovingly crafted I cant stop watching them. I love the true gaming scene, you are absolutely insane in the best way possible.
Showing the comparison between strat speeds with Mario and Luigi on the same screen couldn't have been easy, but it's an excellent way to understand the small differences of "a few frames". Excellent video!
I tend to be later to these videos, but I always love them. This video was stunning and I enjoyed every second of it! You really went above and beyond on this one!
This and the SM64 vids are probably my favorite explanations yet because both have a lot of effort put into them in different ways, I also really liked the visual comparison between strats!
Really loving the strat showcase with luigi. So many speedrun explanations mention how fast something is, but without really a comparison to how a run WITHOUT the glitch looks. So being able to see exactly how much he drops behind from not standing on the rotating platforms or hitting 51 speed really shows exactly why the strat is used. Also because it's implicitly dunking on luigi, which is fitting.
Exemplary analysis video! Pleasing to the eye & ear, thorough, & beautifully edited! Thanks so much for uploading! I hope to see more content of such quality in the future!
Excellent video. Has the right balance of explaining tricks to appreciate the difficulty without making it feel too wordy to lose interest. I think that is hard to do well. Good job.
Algo pushed me here ! The quality of your explanations vastly surpasses anything I've seen on speedruns. Of course, this is no jab to the live commentators on events since you need half an hour to dissect 9 minutes, but I'm really, really glad to finally understand what actually goes on on those crazy runs. You won my sub, keep up the stellar work.
I was born 1987 and been playing this game since it first got released. I was speed running before speed running was a thing. It's interesting how both SMB3 and SMW are affected by the score display being laggy if the score sum is bad In SMB3 to manipulate hammer bros and lag reduction, while SMW is just for lag reduction.
Always love me some Bismuth in my sub box! Thanks for this awesome video and explanation. I had actually seen the RetroGameMechanicsExplained video before which had me even more intrigued for your take on this. Definitively a great channel to check out - if you fancy yourself some low level assembly =) I love it!
Even if you don't fancy it. I can't follow any coding more complex than HTML to save my life, but love hearing the explanation from these folks who are passionate about it. And it's somehow comforting to know that the explanations exist, even if I'm not able to understand. ✌️🍍
Can I say, it's still quite incredible that the game reads the wrong data, nearly crashes, manages to get back into the right area of memory and continue on like nothing happened in less than a second. Didn't even lag the game. We really take the sheer speed of base-level computing for granted, huh.

Excellent video. Has the right balance of explaining tricks to appreciate the difficulty without making it feel too wordy to lose interest.
I think that is hard to do well. Good job.
I will never be tired of your amazing piano renditions of mario themes! Beautiful to my ears
22:40 if you have played the game a lot growing up, you've accidentally done the block trick.
Finds out there's no updated TAS of this category
Bismuth: Fine, I'll do it myself
I was born 1987 and been playing this game since it first got released. I was speed running before speed running was a thing. Just to hear my siblings go "wow look how fast he is in this game" lol I actually would love to start practicing and actually give it a go at this. Loved this video. Put some fire under my ass to really want to try. T.DeBow
Very grandiose music finale there, Bismuth. Good stuff as always.
the spinning in rhythm of the song at 23:11 is so satisfying
I’ve been casually watching the videos, but seeing how you created a TAS just because no one else did. Made me a subscriber. F it. I’ll do it myself
This was the best explanation of that chargin chuck glitch I've ever seen. Amazing.
Beautiful as always. I’m so happy that you got sponsored for this one. Ty for your work ❤
Great explanation for someone like me. I'm not really up to speed on the intimate details of glitches and this to me, is excellent. Well done!
Very nice, good explanations! And you even made a tas. My hat is off to you sir.
This is my favorite vid of yours. I've watched it 4 times! The run is so cool, and the cloud glitch is awesome. It's so early in the game and they perform such an insane glitch and carry a broken power up all the way to the end of the game.
Sick that you and Retro Game Mechanics Explained uploaded a video on the same topic at the same time. Clearly intended, especially as both videos mention each other, but still worth mentioning
This is hands down one of the most well made TH-cam videos I’ve seen in a while, keep up the good work
I love this get's uploaded and at the same time Retro Game Mechanics Explained uploads about the cloud glitch itself.
Gotta love the timing!
I love how he used Luigi as the ghost example xD
Also the fact u made urself the TAS because there wasn't one hit different man, keep up the great work!
"I was upset there wasn't a proper TAS run for this category so I made one myself." You got a like and a sub from me for that one. Dedication and passion.
thank you for all the work you put into your videos. it does not go unnoticed how much attention to detail your videos have and how well you are able to explain abstract concepts or tech to people not in the respective communities
Anothe r absolutely outstanding video. The quality of your visual aids is absolutely top-tier, they're so PERFECTLY demonstrative.
It's interesting how both SMB3 and SMW are affected by the score display being laggy if the score sum is bad
In SMB3 to manipulate hammer bros and lag reduction, while SMW is just for lag reduction.
When you get thumbs up before the video even starts, you know your audience is expecting something spectacular. Keep up the great work!
Incredible technical explanation, super interesting. Thank you!
Man was I excited to see both a Bismuth video and a Retro Game Mechanics Explained on the same day
Can I say, it's still quite incredible that the game reads the wrong data, nearly crashes, manages to get back into the right area of memory and continue on like nothing happened in less than a second. Didn't even lag the game. We really take the sheer speed of base-level computing for granted, huh.
cool video, i especially love the detail of adding subtitles to the runners commentary
