Very well made video, really good and clear explanations on everything going on! There are a few times it did break the flow a bit while watching(to long / overexplaining) but I'm sure you will keep refining the way as you continue making great content :).
I subbed for the technical explanation of the screen scroll glitch. :D One of the things that has gotten me to stick around in speedrunning (spectating) is the technical aspect of what these runners are doing and how they have dissected the games. So thanks for helping to explain these crazy techniques!. :D
Exactly! There's two things needed for level 9 1 - all eight triforce pieces to "skip the old man" in the beginning 2 - any sword to beat Ganon (plus the bow + silver arrow) This is why you can't beat Ganon in the swordless speedrun.
Everyone has already said it in the comments but that won't keep me from saying it one more time: this is, hands down, the absolute best explanation of a speedrun I have ever seen. And reading that you also made your own arrangements and played them on the piano is just the cherry on top of the already incredible cake. Amazing work. AMAZING.
I am blown away by the sheer amount of information you added onto the screen. The map, the enemy counter, all the small ghost Links walking routes that the runner did not take and more and more! You must have put so much work into the video and it shows and it helps to understand all that is going on very smoothly. More than well done. This video is awesome.
Did you know it's two links on the screen in every block. they move likes a mirror image to each other. the enemy hunting shadow link in zelda 1 can be exploited by the the best.
Think about this, the record was achieved on October 18th, this video was released on December 18th, so at the very most, writing, recording, and editing this whole documentary, not even talking about creating all these graphics and scoring the thing, was achieved in two months. That is some absurd speed to turn around anything in, especially something of this quality. Beyond amazing work from Bismuth as usual.
I once did a Zelda "No Sword" run, using the sword to kill Gannon and nothing else. Watching you do this made me feel like an amateur watching a pro at work XD
"part of it"? Literally could not have been done without you. :) congrats Edit: did you have to attempt a single screen wrap more than once? If so, I missed it. That was gorgeous. Also, do you do this with a teammate keeping track of the bomb and fairy counters? Is that who you high five at the end? If so, the idea of team speed running makes this seem so much like formula 1. Very impressive!
It's as if at the end of every level, a bus arrives every 21 frames to bring you to the next level. Even if you miss the bus by just one frame, you would still have to wait 20 frames to catch the next bus. Sometimes though, you'll arrive just before a bus does, and you'll hardly have to wait at all. Of course, this doesn't apply to the last level, since timing stops immediately once you touch the axe at the end.
40:20 just the fact you show a clip of how the room can be done by a casual then show the speedrun method with HD sprites and stats does SO much for your videos, you literally might be the best there is in this category of content and it’s a far shot

I think I gotta make you the only person I financially back on TH-cam. Keep up the great work man this stuff is so good for the speed running community
The part at 38:32 was really good and something I think would be great to have more of. You explained how one tiny, seemingly insignificant mistake led to several other timelosses which added up to 3 seconds lost. It really shows how quickly things can go wrong and how easy it is to lose time. It was also great how Lack seemed to realize, in his head, all the small consequences pretty much immediately and how to adjust for them. Love the videos mr banana man

I think given some time the Mario 64 ABC series will go down as one of the best series of analytical content about anything on TH-cam. You are wonderful and it is genuinely shocking to me that you don’t have millions of subs. Keep working on what you love forever please.
Kudos to Lack for such an amazing run and a big shout out to Bismuth for breaking down and explaining the run so professionally. The real star though is that Nintendo programmer who came up with the Ghost Link/Anti-Link idea that stops all on-screen enemies from making a beeline towards the player at once. You are all, legends.
The best part is that in later games link actually gets to fight his mirror version dark link in ocarina of time, I never knew that dark link had such an old backstory!
My native language it's Spanish but one of the things I love from understanding english are your videos, since kosmic's Mario record I fell in love with them. Cheers Bismuth! Amazing content!
I don't often comment on TH-cam videos, but the amount of work you put in to your videos (and especially this one) is absolutely ridiculous. I hope the algorithm will do its thing and help this one blow up, you surely deserve that. Your videos are amazing, keep up the great work !
This was really amazing to watch. Been following/watching Lack for some time now! Grew up playing this game and its fascinating to see some of the tricks and info people have picked apart over the years. Screen clipping? Crazy and pretty awesome! Amazing episode! Subscribed!

I didn't know that binding of isaac had THAT many TLOZ references. By the wat, bismuth, nice piano playing and amazing video, dude. You are by far the best of all youtube at this kind of videos.
So THAT is why the shopkeeper just takes forever to show up sometimes? Huh, leave it to speedrunners to answer a question I wondered about for a lot of my childhood.
@@alexradice8163 Everybody thought the same thing when they first saw it as a kid, doesn't mean they are uncultured it just means they have pattern recognition. It's obviously not exact, just close...close enough for the vast majority of people to have the same reaction to it. You should smoke a bowl, by the way.
I really appreciate your break downs for showing not just the playing skill necessary but the mechanic understanding and the way it's applied to strategy that makes these runs possible. Thanks!
An exceedingly well made video, with the maps, the location of Link on the map, the counters, a description of every dongeon and important enemy as well as all tricks and strategies. Well done indeed.
Yup. Those attempt counters give me a massive amount of respect for top-level speedrunners more than anything else. The sheer amount of dedication and perseverance it takes to pull off these highly-contested world record runs is, to put it mildly, absolutely insane.
keep in mind these wont all be completed runs and lots will likely have been reset fairly early on in the run. That being said it is still a decent amount
@@Bismuth9 absolutely...he has always asked that it be family friendly and for the most part it really is! The trolls only show up on the youtube videos
I still don't see using glitches should count as a complete speedrun. Should have to play the game with no glitches to me it makes it better to watch. Just my opinion. Dude still did an amazing job.
Thank you for this video. Not only was it informative, you've answered a lot of little niggles I've had about certain aspects of Zelda 1 for over 15 years now (Darknut behaviour with antiLink especially). Your piano skills are also top notch.
This is amazingly thorough, as someone who ran Zelda for a while hearing an explanation to how screen scrolling works is really cool. Incredibly detailed video, well done!
Seriously, imagine if Bismuth teamed up with Tomatoanus on an explained speedrun they both knew a lot about. It would be so wonderful! My favorite aspect of speedruns is people can manipulate things in unintended ways to serve a benefit. I love seeing the mechanics being written out and explained. I love seeing the perfectly routed lines players traverse worlds in. Careful manipulations to achieve a predictable result in normally random patterns. It's all so satisfying.
I love these kinds of speedrun breakdown videos. I appreciate the amount of effort that's gone into breaking it all down and explaining it in layman's terms. Thanks!
Bismuth is the only TH-camr who learns as much if not more than the original creators for his videos. Most explanation/reaction videos point the camera at themselves and yell and scream and pretend to react loudly hyped and surprised with absolutely no idea of what’s happening or why then get lots of views by people who don’t understand either but click because the thumbnail was a surprised face with the eyes censored by a black bar.
@@Chris-zi9hf You would need to clearly define what is important information. This video didn't explain all the enemies, which I would consider important
This might be one of the most impressive videos I've ever seen. The insane amount of effort to make this with all the visual aids and the map showing where we are in the world just super impressive. You not having at least a million subs is a travesty.
Praises have been sung already but I also want to add: Perfect explanation. When I was done, I didn't even realize it was an hour, I just sat through long parts of it and came back later. It was slim, to the point, interesting, cheeky enough in its reactions to Lack's amazing feat without trying hard to be funny - it was everything I could hope for in an explained speedrun. Thank you, well done!!
I ever got this far when I was a kid, but I just realized the wizzrobe attack sound is the same as the dinosaur from Mario 2 when he shoots the egg used to throw back at him.
Hey, so even though I already knew most of it, I *really* appreciate you breaking down the speedrun stream layout at the beginning! It makes it all more accessible and less overwhelming to people not familiar with speedrunning or livestreaming, and I hope that helps introduce ppl to the community!

Lack is a great dude. Everyone should go follow him.
My native language it's Spanish but one of the things I love from understanding english are your videos, since kosmic's Mario record I fell in love with them. Cheers Bismuth! Amazing content!
I'm glad more videos like these are being made. Shows that Summingsalt isn't as niche as one would expect
And Karl Jobst is a legend in it as well.
@@pinut187 indeed, although Jobst and AbyssSoft are less of speedrun documentarians like Salt and Bismuth and more like speedrun reporters

You’re editing has gotten reeaalllllyyy slick man. Please keep improving and adding flourishes like this. We notice, and we love it
I loved your integration of comedy, the level 6 boss joke was great and the “this boss is harder, jk” was great.
Holy shit. 1 hour and 8 minutes. This is gonna be nuts LOL
Yeah. I realized that video is Bismuth's longest explanation video ever.
You still ain't done
I saw 1 hour and 8 minutes and salivated
Well he said it was gonna be longest but I didn't expect a (relatively) simple game to be longer than DK or Mario64
I don't often comment on TH-cam videos, but the amount of work you put in to your videos (and especially this one) is absolutely ridiculous. I hope the algorithm will do its thing and help this one blow up, you surely deserve that. Your videos are amazing, keep up the great work !

I like the little editing details, like the room objective in triforce piece rooms going from "get triforce piece" to "triforce piece get"
This is the channel I never knew I needed until I started watching it and how perfectly everything is explained. This channel is truly amazing.
Music by: Bismuth in the credits blew me away more than anything else

This is an incredibly well put together video! It's so good to see good imformative speed run content like this :)

underrated comment
This was really amazing to watch. Been following/watching Lack for some time now! Grew up playing this game and its fascinating to see some of the tricks and info people have picked apart over the years. Screen clipping? Crazy and pretty awesome! Amazing episode! Subscribed!
Was just going to praise you for this video and the amount of thought, research and editing hours this must have taken. The results are speaking for themselves, you can really tell that you are passionate about this. And now i read that you arranged and played the background music aswell!?
Well done, sir.
Hat is off!
You know it's good when the Bismuth video is over twice the length of the speedrun
You explaining stuff as a speedrun goes along makes watching them way more entertaining
I didn't know that binding of isaac had THAT many TLOZ references. By the wat, bismuth, nice piano playing and amazing video, dude. You are by far the best of all youtube at this kind of videos.
Most channels that explain a speed run don't into the depth or effort that you did for this vid. Amazing work.
Extremely well done! Wow. Great graphical presentation of the game. Just, amazing. Thank you for this so much. Very enjoyable to watch.
So THAT is why the shopkeeper just takes forever to show up sometimes? Huh, leave it to speedrunners to answer a question I wondered about for a lot of my childhood.
I admire the amount of time, research and production value you put into this!
"Here's the layout of Level 3"
Oh. Okay then
tilted swastika is the nazi symbol, the side laying one has been a religious symbol for Eurasian cultures. those few degrees have alot of meaning
Also the levels name is The Manji, like level 1 name is Eagle and so on...
Also, If you layout the maps of all of the "Levels" they fit together like a puzzle.
Uncultured, ignorant
"This is the total attempt counter"
t-twenty three fucking thousand?????
And those are attempts with the current route. They reset the counter if there is a route change.
@@forgiveman Nah that was all attempts across all routes. For this route it was about 3500.
@@LackAttack thanks for the info. Learning from the best. 😅
He has the most informative set up screen I’ve ever seen.
Covering up Twitch chat for an hour long video is perhaps one of the best things anyone has ever done.
That’s really PogChamp amirite?
Lack has an excellent chat though, really out of the ordinary as far as several hundred people in a twitch chat goes
@@lukelaser5397 there's separate categories for that
Thank you for this video.
It will be better with Summoning Salt.

Run becomes the new world record minutes later
Yeah, intuition is a bitch. Got myself new PBs on runs which I thought to be totally screwed up.
It may be 2:00 in the morning, but I will always have time for another one of Bismuth's Speedrun Night Classes.
*Bismuth seeing all the unoptimized screen space on LackAttack's display* "It's free real estate"
It is not unused space. The chat is there which seems to be covered up.
Speedruns: beat the game as fast as possible
Speedrun explanations: over an hour long
There needs to be a speedrun for explaining speedruns without leaving our important information
The epic return of an old friend: the Framerule
I ever got this far when I was a kid, but I just realized the wizzrobe attack sound is the same as the dinosaur from Mario 2 when he shoots the egg used to throw back at him.
Technically right, but it's a giant bird. Named Birdo.

Dude.... Your breakdowns are the best.
Don't ever dumb your stuff down.
I come here to have my mind blown.
Hey, so even though I already knew most of it, I *really* appreciate you breaking down the speedrun stream layout at the beginning!
It makes it all more accessible and less overwhelming to people not familiar with speedrunning or livestreaming, and I hope that helps introduce ppl to the community!
