New CLA is a CLS killer! PLUS the AMG 35 and 45S!

- The best 4 door coupe money can buy?! Hey guys and welcome back to RBR and today is about the New Mercedes CLA! And it’s a car that I think has not only moved on from it’s less than inspiring predecessor, but looking at the reaction its gotten since release, I think it’s going to overshadow the high end CLS.
Of course Mercedes are the creators of the 4 door coupe niche, which started with the Vision CLS in 2003. The so called banana Mercedes was hailed as one of the most stylish cars ever made, and the original now sits pretty much as a design icon. It was more exciting than E class outside and in, and this continued with the next model. Though not as elegant, it was going for more aggressive. And that Ponton rear wheel arch suited it much more than the E Class in my opinion. Wasn’t a huge fan of the lipstick rear lights but lovely car none the less.
Around this time the compact sector underwent a rebirth with the THEN new A Class, and along side that came their second 4 door coupe model, the CLA. And sales were way beyond expectations, with 70% of CLA buyers being from other brands, and it was a pivotal point in Mercedes starting to “kill it” as the kids would say.
BUT to me this car always looked under designed from day dot and back then the CLS reigned as the prettiest MB 4 door coupe.
Fast forward to the present: and the story is a different one. The new CLS has a controversial design, with the front being a copy paste of the new A Class.
Enter, this new CLA. Previewed in the concept A Aesthetics, which really reminds me in spirit of the original Vision CLS. This car has a completely unique body, it is NOT an A Sedan with sloped roof, the entire body is unique to CLA.
We will explore just how different it is to it’s predecessor too. But will it be different enough to A Class, and to the A Sedan? And how could I be right about it being the best 4 door coupe you can have right now? And how has the “hey Mercedes” MBUX system moved forward?

As a matter of fact I love the new interior of mercedes cars more than any other german cars. You dont know shit about me. But I guess you are that kind of person that judges a book by its cover.
And to you Jason my shqipe. I just think there is something really wrong with the shape of the car. It looks boring. Maybe it is the color..

Stop the new 3 series is stunning and so smooth. Personally I think the dash screen tablet of Mercedes look so ugly and inappropriate they should found a other way to integrate this screen more smoothly. But I like the new design of this cla. (Btw I'm French sorry for the fault, if i make it)

Exactly what I said about 1st Gen CLA to my friends when it came out. It was incomplete car that went through production. But now it looks more mature. actually can't wait for 45AMG. It could be my next car 🤞🏼

The second gen cls looked amazing. By far the best, and most aggressive ever.
totally agree, the first one looked good overall, but the front was (in my opinion) super ugly
Zamuraii Cobalt yeah the front was the worst part of it. Also the overall proportions and rear was much better done on the second one
yup only problem was the rear lights because it was identical to the CLA which was being promoted as 30,000$ car at the time, and spending 70-100k and having the same rear lights as a heavily distributed 30k model turned me off from buying it I guess. I have an E350 atm.
d b there’s always something that has some resemblance to a cheaper model in some way. The E class for example, looks boxy, and a lot like a larger C class of the time.
CLA, really looks very different with its smaller proportions, doesn’t have the wide rear fenders and tail lights I think not even LED. Somehow it’s easy for me to see a difference right away
@@av8743 if we went back a few generations like 2000's c class looked very different from an S class but now they are very similar. either way I agree with you I just wish the e class and s class had more of their own design than being so similar with each other

Great presentation of the old and new models.
I think the lights of the cls, the a class and the rear lights of the gle aren't looking so good. But they totally nailed the design of the cla.

Tom J yeah i’m pretty pissed about the new gle. the fronts alright, but the rear is ugly af and they make it look super cheap with black plastic all over it. definitely a downgrade
@@wronky I've seen the gle with amg line and the Night Package in a dealership and I don't love the new design but since then I think it looks ok. But you have to spec the amg line, otherwise it doesn't look good.
You are right, im my opinion these cars look way to soft, while the cla is badass looking.

Loved the CLA 2016 as my first car. Super fun to drive as a 18-year old driver, and the only car I could afford in cash from Mercedes, so they probably aimed me perfectly. Instantly got stuck to their brand, and I now have a GLC Coupé, but i'm really interested to get this new car as a ''2nd car/girlfriends'' car.

I have the current CLA and I like the current shape more than the new one. The new CLA exterior is very understated like a Mitsubishi lancer from the front and side. Obviously the interior improves a lots from the current version, I like the new interior.
I agree, I have the 2014 CLA45, it looks and sounds aggressive! The new exterior is soft and boring (but looks good in shooting break). The new interior looks great and I am sure the new car will be great in almost every other measure.

Interested to know why the 250 doesn’t sound as good as the 220 ... isn’t the same actual engine.? And you’d think the 250 is more sporty as it’s faster

This CLA is simply beautiful! I would love if there was a coupe version of this or a convertible. Would be a nice summer car to take out and tool around in.

Great review, i love your format. The cla45s shooting brake will be a practical pocket rocket, just like the c63s wagon but more nimble and half the price. I loved my 2013a45 on the track but the model 3 perf will be sweeter again for me

Matter of taste....I like the cls more.....but that is because I like larger cars. I love my w212 E class :)
To be honest I'm one of the few people who like the design of the new CLS450/53 and E450, the bodies remind me of the s class coupe.
E class is the best 💪
2:00 It reminds me of flower petals, very nice natural shape. Previous cls and cla has the prettiest headlights, at least for me. Aesthetics are very subjective.

With the new A Class sedan, I'm wondering where this CLA fits in? It seems like Mercedes now have two similar models.
First time I saw first gen CLA45 i thought it’s way more expensive car than it actually was. In my opinion they killed it. The rear lights on my first gen cla are the thing of beauty
