I personally believe that the amount of games we got last year would have roughly been the same regardless of the pandemic. There'd probably be a few more trailers for some games and maybe fewer delays, but for the most part everything would have been the same.
Likely Breavely Default, No More Heroes, 3D World and Monster Hunter Rise coudl have released un 2020 without pandemic. But then who knows if Q12021 would have any exclusives to play
I would guess maybe one big new first party title that didn't release...? The 3D All-Stars collection was clearly supposed to come out in March, and I would argue Age of Calamity and 3D World would probably have been September and October/November. Would there have been one more bit title in November/December? Maybe not, but maybe so. The year was definitely light on completely NEW games, I wouldn't be surprised if one more unannounced one is finishing up now and was supposed to come out late last year

As much as the sass and bullying of the original gave everyone more personality, I didn’t need it in New Horizons, because 2020 was so crap that the last thing I needed was Roald telling I was a burden on the island.

People are slow to pick it up but it's continued to sell.
But they are big games and today games that are shorter tend to sell better.
Im a huge fan of the series so ill always encourage others to play it.
One has to ask, if Nintendo stopped acting like Nintendo, would Nintendo still be Nintendo?
Let's say, there are aspects of their company they should really ditch but they changed their mind on TH-cam so maybe also on fangames one day.

From my experience in the fanbase that is an apt description for every Zelda game after MM.
Which is weird, because Twilight Princess is just three OoTs in a trenchcoat
Even MM has been vindicated by history in the eyes of the fanbase, while games like Twilight Princess that didn't do a lot that was new have retroactively been soured somewhat (with general consensus seeming to be that it was good, but perhaps not as good as it could've been if it had focused more on being its own game instead of being an Ocarina of Time 2).

YES! I absolutely ADORE the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series (especially Super Mystery Dungeon on 3DS) and was SO happy this series wasn't going to be abandoned like a certain OTHER Pokemon spinnoff (*COUGH Pokepark COUGH*). It really didn't help that It got what I like to call "The Pikmin Treatment" where It released way too close to a much more anticipated game (Animal Crossing New Horizons in Mystery Dungeon's case and Smash Bros. Melee in Pikmin 1's case). It also fixed many of the issues I had when I played Blue Rescue Team. Now to hope for either an Explorers of Sky remake or a new entry entirely. I honestly can't decide which one I'd want more.

I loved Red Rescue Team, and the remake looked great, but it was waaaay overpriced, and that’s what scared me off

I can understand the argument for them not doing more directs, but they benefitted the smaller titles a whole lot more than they did now. In the past, people would be paying attention to the smaller and indie games in directs as they were live and had to watch them to see if something big followed, where as in the partner showcases, people just skip forward until something catches their eye, drop a dislike and move on. THE reason games like Untitled Goose Game and Busgax were so popular was because of their sandwiching between this huge announcements, but I couldn't name one indie title from any of the smaller showcases that were just dropped on TH-cam
And with Twitter releasing the yearly review of gaming news, out of the top 5 most tweeted about events, Nintendo didn't even make the list. Not one of their events or announcements generated the level of hype that the Tokyo Game show, or Xbox and PS' independent directs did
I think these next few years are going to see a lot of success for Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo have created this perfect format, and have just given it up like that, leaving the market for live, console specific events without it's biggest competitor

Incidentally, just like with the last three Paper Mario games, Kensuke Tanabe was the producer of Chibi-Robo Zip Lash. He had pretty much no prior involvement with the series and was suddenly involved with the new game, he ordered that it be a departure from the previous titles, and it backfired. Similar story with Metroid Prime: Federation Force.
They really need to stop making him producer of installments in series he wasn't originally involved with.

It's saddening that everyone forgets about Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
The biggest surprise for me this year was how much I loved Xenoblade Definitive Edition. I never played a game in the series, and after finishing the remaster, I went on to play Xenoblade 2 which I loved even more! I just started my playthrough of Xenoblade X last night and I’m very excited to dive into another experience by Monolithsoft.
Pikmin 3 deluxe is the highest selling Pikmin game now so that’s something
Only in Japan, right? Last I heard from the worldwide releases was that it launched worse than the Wii U one. I haven’t seen updates anywhere but Japan. Was there any good news?

Xenoblade DE was absolutely the game I needed last year. I already really liked it's original Wii release but stuck fairly strictly to just the main campaign. I got myself the Special Edition and just completely tore through it, nearly 100% it, end game super bosses and all. I just had this new found love and appreciation for this game that I already thought I couldn't love anymore than I already did.

What do you mean Xenoblade isn’t selling well? Considering how niche of a game it is, it has sold pretty well. XC2 has now sold over 2 million units and XC:DE is the fastest selling Xenoblade game as its already over 1.5 million. Just because it’s not as high as other franchises doesn’t mean it’s selling badly
I also remember reading that XCDE is the best selling version of XC, which is a notable achievement. Arlo makes it sound like the game was a flop, but personally would not consider breaking a million sales to be bad.

I like to think that Arlo offscreen is like Danny Devito in Matilda. He forces all of his kids to play Pikmin instead of read books. One of his kids snapped and glued his xmas hat to his head like in Matilda and now he's just stuck like that now

When was this recorded? We have more data on Pikmin 3's sales (it's been good!) and also we have a more clear idea of what Bowser's Fury is about.
Most likely still during Christmas, seeing as Arlo still has his Christmas hat on without paying any attention to it.
Are there Pikmin 3 updates anywhere but Japan? I know it’s the best sales in Japan, but last I heard from everywhere else, it launched worse than the Wii U version
Not to be a downer, but it kinda still felt like Animal Crossing was released too soon. Sometimes I wonder if they play tested it at all, especially the abysmal coop experience. Then again, it’s been a year and they haven’t added a single QoL change people have asked for so I guess they’re satisfied with what they released.
Listening to people asking for things is a quick way to mess up your game lol
@@nathane.9286 That's not a great attitude. Why do you think playtesting exists? It's true fans may seldom suggest the best solutions, but the problems they find in a user experience are what developers need to take into consideration to improve that experience.

22:07 Xenoblade has always been a niche game & even niche in the JRPG genre. XC Wii sold $900 thousand in sales. XC2 as of now sold over $2 million & is the best selling Xeno game. XCDE has almost doubled the sales of it's Wii version. So the series is doing very well in the scope of where it's bar is set. Compared to Mario yeah that's nothing but for a niche game & compared to it's original sales then it's very succesful.

A good memory of last year is when on march 19th at gamestop we got a call a couple hours before closing that we could start handing out the copies. Cue happy excited customers rushing to the store (it was a snowstorm though so we warned people to be careful) and picking up the game before the lockdowns started.
Its a good memory and one of the few bright spots of that year working at gamestop.

Xenoblade is continuing to do better and better though. 2 has cracked the 2 million mark and DE has sold over 1.5 million. That's way higher than 1 or X ever got and I think the momentum will continue. But JRPGs just aren't going to sell 10 million plus very easily. I think a long term aim of 5 million for a Xenoblade release is more realistic and would be a big milestone.
This is my man’s fourth Nintendo New Year video
Year certainly was a mixed bag with Nintendo but I am hopeful that soon we are going to get some big news, right now the only announced games are Mario in February and Pokémon Snap at the end of April, both of which I’m excited for no doubt but the big two that really stand out so far. Hopefully we hear something soon in regards to games whether as a surprise or a Direct again, either way I’m sure it’ll happen soon. Overall happy to leave that year behind and look forward to this year in gaming hopefully and also more good Arlo content. Fantastic videos overall and helped keep me sane during the pandemic. Cheers to more videos and fun this year Arlo!
The Eti-cons have long since even cleared up, but to elaborate further; he was indeed donating the proceeds though this information was not shared with his family which caused a rift between the community. Later the hatchet was buried, the Etik-cons may be put back up with the classic E logo instead if Etika's family gives the go a head.
It is also worth noting that the Cease And Desist they got from Nintendo wasn't just for the Etik-cons but for multiple Pokemon/Nintendo IP using ones so it was part of a mass shutdown of ones that did indeed make a profit for them.

I'm really glad that your reviews take a step back and really take a look at the whole situation.
I also think that in the shenanigans that people forget that two new consoles released this year, and console release years are typically slow. This year saw Microsoft buy up some large studios.
I don't know if 2021 will be a "Great" game year, but I'm optimistic for 2022.
