Woojin Jang Shyamalan is a film director who likes to have big plot twists in his movies. When Arlo said “have yourself a great” the next word would typically be something like day, afternoon, or evening, so it was a “twist” for him to say popsicle instead.

So, I’m glad it’s there, but let’s be a little objective. It’s less of a smash hit and more of a hit, sales wise.
What makes me happy is Odyssey blowing out a 2D Mario game. I understand it’s just a rerelease of a Wii U game, but it’s still a nice thing.

I'm just annoyed at that list, yes some of those are stupid names but things like the HD Phantom hourglass I'd buy in a heartbeat(along with spirit tracks if they make it). Those games I love on the ds, but I hate the stylus controls being forced where they don't belong tbh. Some places i get it, but as much as I know i have to use it is annoying as hell as someone who keeps trying to play then misplacing a charger and never going back to it XD
Kaosine I would LOVE that. you didn’t like the stylus controls??? It’s probably because i played the DS zeldas before the others, but i felt the stylus worked perfectly. Stuff like the boomerang and bow were so much more precise, and swinging the sword was fun. I was kinda sad that ALBW on the 3ds went back to regular controls, pressing a button to use all items just doesn’t feel as engaging.

To be legit, a Nintendo "Mario Party" esque game that made use of the entire cataloge of amiibo on release, and kept up with later ones, might be the killer app needed to really kick Amiibo sales back into high gear.

Pokemon man....there is almost no competition for it. And it DOES sell in name alone. EVERYONE from kids to grown ass adults buy it EVEN IF they know they'll hate it

Totally get you. To me it barely feels like a sequel and we're still waiting for map editor, more power ups and *search by title* course world.
It's like Mario Party, though not as bad. At least MM2 was hyped up and had some legs beyond the base game. The Mario Party franchise, however... man, if it got the Super-Loving-Update treatment like Smash, Mario, and Zelda... we'd have a crowning jewel on our hands.

Hey Arlo, i know you probably won't read this and its not regarding the topic of the video, but i just need to say THANK YOU for helping me discover Metroid and Pikmin as a franchise. I never really was into them but with your videos i discovered my enthusiasm for the games!
Now i was finally able to catch a Gamecube with Pikmin and Metroid Prime (for only 70€ ;) ) to continue the journey!!
I've never played Pikmin, but seeing Arlo's enthusiasm does make me more curious about it. Also, I randomly found a beautiful rendition of one of the songs a while back, and even though I don't know the context or anything, it actually makes me want to play through it.

@@Andrew-qu7lq First, thanks for sharing, the song is awesome and i think it somehow captures the vibe of Pikmin quite well. Second, i played Pikmin 3 and had a blast, the game is full of fun and you can feel it was crafted with love by the developers :) So a definitive yes for trying out, Pikmin 3 for example is available for a cheap price as Nintendo Selects on the eShop if you dont have access to 1 or 2.
Pikmin is amazing, especially the third one. The campaign is great, and the multiplayer is super underrated.
Never played Metroid Prime though, kinda waiting for a Switch trilogy port.

The problem with sword and shields sales is that I know many people who bought both games, which expanded the sales numbers but probably not the player count
The question is how big this phenomenon is.
I am not sure the impact is as big as it seems (Pokemon Sword alone sold quite well after all)
People got both just to spite the people who didn't like it.
Player count doesn’t really matter though. For Nintendo, 16 million people buying one game and 1 person buying 16 million copies equates to the same amount of money in the bank
@@galegai I mean, a game with a lower audience takes longer to expand. If the number of pokemon players has indeed gone down, the games may not gain as much profit for the next generation.
1 person can spread the word about his 16 million copies of a game only he owns.

I'm so happy to see Splatoon 2 doing so well, I hope this means either a new Splatoon or another expansion to updates and events for Splatoon 2 in the relatively near future (though future updates to Splatoon 2 aren't looking too promising as there haven't been any content updates or events since July).
Apparently we're getting an update in April and they haven't given us any hints about what it could be.

@@thatcallofdutygamer2823 Considering every other big franchise on the system has pulled in tons of new players and Nintendo in general has earned tons of new fans.. and considering Animal Crossing sold nearly 12 million on the 3DS when the system had barely 10 million users when the game launched and the Switch has close to 60 million by comparison... Yeah, I think 15 million isn't just likely, but almost guaranteed. I'd say two to three years from now, it'll be at 20-25 million. Nintendo games continue to sell and as the install base grows, these games just get more and more potential fans.
And it's by far the biggest and best looking one yet in the series. Obviously we can't know for sure until some time from now, but I'd be surprised if it didn't sell that well.

Mario Party sold well because:
1- It has MARIO on the cover
2- It's normally on sale
3- The 'party' on the name kinda makes it ideal for parents to give to their kids

Pokémon: When your sheer size as a brand lets you eclipse other, more creative and innovative titles.
EDIT: I'm going to tack this on the end here, I stopped buying Pokemon games because if you've played one you've played them all, and the story has only experienced 3 major formula changes. From gen 2 to gen 3, where the enemy team could be anyone, and from gen 6 to gen 7 where there is now a fake out team. (Skull to Aether, Yell to... I dunno, oil company guy?) I acknowledge that it was innovative for it's original release, however adding new moves isn't innovating. There has been no functional change to the core mechanic. Why bother? It's fun, it works, that's all you need in a game. While the original comment I made was overwhelmingly critical of pokemon, I'd like to take this opportunity to say I'm actually just... really disillusioned. It was fun the first 5 times I played it, now it's getting old. You can add dynamaxing or mega evolutions or Z moves all you want, but what does it really change? You still pick your moves off a list that you construct yourself. It's a bunch of smoke and mirrors to make you think something new and exciting is taking place. I have decided to distance myself from the franchise as whole. It just isn't interesting to me anymore. Do with that what you will. I don't care. Caring is too hard these days for me to waste my energy on it here. Take care everyone.

the Top 10 list said that it was "as of December 31, 2019." Pokemon released in November which means they got 16.06 million units in a little over a month. What the frick.
Breath of the Wild was my first Zelda game (and first open world game) and it is one of the greatest games I have ever played in my entire life.

It’s so true about the switch. I feel like anyone who buys a switch is a gamer period. They’re focused on actual games rather than sports games like we see on Xbox and PlayStation. I feel like Playstaion and Xbox is half and half to gamers and people who only play sports games. I’ve seen ALOT of people just play ea sports games or gta v or cod. That’s it! Like nothing else. Why you don’t see them having a switch anytime soon. I can always trust someone who has a switch cause I know their mostly there playing a really good Nintendo game
Just to play devil's advocate, an Xbox fan could turn it around and say that Switch owners are not gamers, as they only play Nintendo games and not "intense" or graphically impressive games.

I own a Switch, and I'm actually only a super casual gamer. As in, I find video games interesting, and I'm particularly partial to games like Animal Crossing and Mario, but I can't see myself spending an entire day playing video games or organizing events around them. I just like games, kinda like how people like playing chess or checkers with their families.

Something Arlo seemed to gloss over when talking about Super Mario Party's sales, he didn't mention that it was bundled with Joy Cons for about the same price as a new set of Joy Cons. That's probably inflating it's sales.
As he mentioned it for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe it should be mentioned for Super Mario Party as well.
LPSoldin Well he most likely didn’t know that. The Mario party bundle doesn’t seem to be very common so I doubt that is a big reason for Mario party’s sales.

Literally one of the best sponsor spots I've ever seen. I find myself skipping over or tuning out sponsor spots in videos, but yours was so entertaining.
It was good but Internet Historian is still the king of sponsors.
I don't see anyone mentioning this, but it's also relevant that these games never go under 40 dollars, rarely go below 50, and are usually between 55 and 60.
So when you compare these sales to games from most other consoles, at the same number of sales, you can be sure Nintendo makes a billionshsh more money that the other platforms

I extremely enjoy sword and shield, but they are a little disappointing for video games as a general, but i would say they are some of the most fun in the pokemon series, due to how easy it is to shinghunt / get into competitive
Regarding Pokémon Sword and Shield’s sale, I’ve been saying this and I’ll continue saying this: if you don’t like something, don’t buy it. I love Pokémon and I saw all the negativity around Pokémon Sword and Shield before it came out and some people may have not bought it because of it but any Pokémon game is better than none so I’ll continue to buy Pokémon games because I want more Pokémon games.

I was so late to the whole drama, but most if not all people i know regret buying that game and i'm still amused pokemon colosseum (2003) and XD (2005) games had better animations and polish, i think the negativity is deserved? I still have hope for future games of the serie tho.
@@tealeaf3210 Facts. You could take any other Switch game and compare it but the easiest comparison is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It has the most content of any game in the series by far but it sacrificed nothing, everything looks so stunning and detailed and the fact that it's a Wii U port at the end of the day really drives it home the care that really didn't go into Sword and Shield

I do see that SS has improved a lot on the game, hell the character customization is amazing, certain parts of the game do look really good, the music is pretty good, multiple gyms, the designs for mons and characters. But there are SO much more bad then good with the games though, and I'm sure these bad things will not go away...

Not going to lie but I enjoyed Sword and Shield and so did my friends. Yep the games are nothing groundbreaking and don’t include all the Pokemon but there still fun to most of the fans. I will be honest this was my first proper Pokemon game not counting Let’s Go, which I didn’t like, so maybe my expectations were lower then everyone else.

Tbh as much as I love MK8, I've played that game for nearly 6 years now since it released on the Wii U, I've gotten a little tired of it and im ready for a new game. I'm hoping for a MK9 eventually and I feel like it's going to happen for the Switch. Nintendo stopping DLC for MK8 may show that they're busy working on MK9 instead, we'll see though

Mario Maker 2 requires a Nintendo Online subscription to download user created levels. Mario Maker 1 did not. That might have something to do with the non-impressive sales. Also no amiibo costumes.

Nice video Arlo, I have to say I’m excited for the future when regarding the future of the franchises, especially with the upcoming Animal Crossing game and the new Breath of the Wild sequel, so here’s hoping Nintendo does a good job on the games and they sell well to set a good precedent for the future. I love all of the franchises equally, seeing as Nintendo has played a large part of my life, although there’s the odd occasion where Nintendo does do questionable decisions such as through bad PR. In the case of Sword and Shield, I wish they did sell less, but I’m happy with the game, just would’ve liked it if Game Freak did include all of the Pokémon and not just simply a selection because of “hardware limitations” or whatever the excuse is for the future. I skipped Let’s Go as it just never really appealed to me and it basically being the billionth gen 1 remake. Sword and Shield are underwhelming, but for me there’s still enough to enjoy and that’s what matters for me. I just wish people would stop throwing people under the rug and think they’re automatically a shill or apologist just when they play the game - they’re people who also played the games and are disappointed and people like myself who enjoyed it but agree with the sentiments of people on both sides of the argument. Can’t people at least try to be respectful of one another instead of acting like assholes? Anywho, again, nice video Arlo, keep up the good work.
