I disagree... I mean with the " took the least risks" part. The writers intentionally did what they did with the movie. Scream is a slasher/satire and the most horror franchise's biggest mistake is that they kill too many characters and Scream 6 literally flipped this idea.
They took great risk because they know that most people will hate the idea of not killing anyone important in the movie and I think it's brave.

yeah as much as i love 6 and its easter eggs, it was basically a rehash of Scream 2. it’s funny how the writers and directors said they had so much creative freedom to tell the story THEY wanted to tell, and it ended up being one we’ve already seen a hundred times before. i still think it’s one of the stronger entries in the franchise tho

The reason nostalgia sequels don’t work is because you’re trying to shoehorn in characters whose stories ended long ago in other movies. The characters that you’re trying to bring back are the characters the fans say they want but their stories ended in other movies. As long as you keep trying to do that, you are going to have stories that are limited in where they can go because they have to address the need for the presence of nostalgic characters.
Scream 2022 had to be a reboot of scream 1996, because everyone wanted to celebrate Wes Craven and make a movie that was reminiscent of something he would make. As a result, you could not make an original, fresh movie with new characters who had their own stories; it had to be a return to the formula, style and location that Wes Craven would have used to make a Scream movie with Sidney Prescott.

I have been saying for awhile the legacy sequels can't seem to figure out what to do with the legacy characters or even worst they kill them off in garbage ways and I find the new characters are either very weak or they are given no real development! I have to disagree with Laurie Strode in Halloween 2018, by removing Halloween 2 from canon they took away any believability in her characters extreme PTSD and the movie was very unfocused! I found Scream 6 just copied Scream 2 and it was just OK but at least they didn't kill a legacy character in a garbage way unlike Scream 2022! I agree the legacy sequels are just checks in boxes and it's a real shame because it's not that we don't want to see new idea's in these legacy franchises but we want them to actually be executed in a really solid way and so far we have not really seen that!

Kinda disagree. I only think the first half of the movie was fantastic. Cory's story, Lori and Allison's development, it's all very compelling. But once Michael comes back into the story, it derails, and it's like the writers didn't know how to intertwine the set up with the payoff

This is off topic but after rewatching Scream 2, I wondered why Sidney’s father did not try to get to the campus to protect Sidney? The film occurred over a time span of around 36 hours in Sidney’s world.
Assuming Windsor College is based in Ohio, it would have been a 4-5 hour flight from California not to mention a drive of at least a few hours to the nearest major airport.
Perhaps Neil Prescott was on business but unless he flew internationally, he could have still gotten to Windsor College in about 12-24 hours if he frantically tried to get a flight.
Or better yet, they could have put in a scene where Neil calls Sidney to check to see if she is ok. His absence from the movie made his character a questionable father in my view.
    Just something I pondered.

The backlash from Halloween Ends is the perfect example of why studios dont want the story to take a risk in a legacy sequel. As soon as a creative team comes in with a different concept to tell a story from a new perspective it receives a lot of negative reaction. I honestly dont think its all that possible to please the entire audience with a legacy sequel to be totally honest.. in each instance the fans all have their own ideas. I think Halloween and Scream did both do a very good job at bringing these stories back to life.. in both cases I did end up being pulled in and actually caring about the new characters, which at the end of the day is the most important part. As for Scream.. the developmemt of these new characters now being stunted is a huge hurdle.. Scream 7 probably has the hardest job now of any of these movies.

  • @CreativeStoryteller35

I agree with what you say. I also think that for the new Halloween trilogy, if they replaced Cameron with Corey, then it would've given us a new character to root for and see his story play out as he slowly became Michael Myers himself.

I like how toy described Scream 5: redundant. I was pretty entertained the whole way through while watching it, but I just remember thinking the entire time I saw it was this concept was already done and explored a lot better in Scream 4. Overall I liked Dewey’s death as it progressed the story but idk. Something about the movie just felt so off and empty. 6 was better as it didn’t rely so much on the previous movies (mostly), but when it did it fell really flat, like the third act and the reveal being it’s Richie’s family. Boring. What makes this all ironic is that Scream is meant to be a commentary and sort of a parody on the genre. Yes it points out that it is a legacy sequel but it doesn’t try anything new or provide any sort of commentary on what it is like Scream 1996 did with slashers of that era. 2 was great for sequels, 3 was hit or miss for the end all trilogy story, and 4 IMO was ahead of its time on talking about 2010 remakes/predicting what a “legacy sequel” looks like. 5 repeats what 4 already set up but with less screen time of characters we already care about and doesn’t care to expand too deeply on the new characters it wants us to care about

I don’t think requels are killing the genre. I mean “remakes” were killing the genre until horror pioneers created something new. There’ll always be visionaries that switch things up, the same way there will always be executives who’ll beat the dead horse until it stops spitting money.

We already lived in the era of remakes and now we are in the era of horror requels. Some are successful and some are not💀. We shall see if IKWYDLS will be a good return for the franchise. The use of legacy characters have been pretty been much negative. We just had exorcist believer and they disrespected the legacy character they brought back. Laurie the first character who was used for this format was great in 2018, underutilized in kills, and had a nice ending for her new story in ends. So I agree wit be what you’re saying.

Also, I like Halloween (2018), but it was similar to what Scream (2022) did, so I'm not sure why you say Halloween (2018) was “original.” I like the movie, but I can tell it wasn't original, but that's okay because it was an entertaining movie. It had many callbacks and easter eggs to the first movie and Halloween: H20. It was entertaining, but not an original legacy sequel.

If they are done right, they are a good edition to any franchise. Halloween 18 did it the best ive scene, setting the standard again that for me have not been matched. Scream fans cant say anything, its been the same movie repeated five times until six took a risk. But they will revert back to Sidney the Terminator Prescott being the unkillable final OAP who kicks the young ghost faces ass yet again - YAWN. Something fresh please, The frustrating thing about Scream is 1996 they set up the new slasher rules, then just repeated them over and over and over, never creating anything new. Time to be the frontrunner again - get new writers in for Scream 7 with some balls to take a risk.

The problem with Scream especially is that it's clear they write the scripts where you can plug in legacy characters based on whether they say yes or not to the project. It really takes you out of the movie. It's like with Scream 6, 'oh Sidney just decided to stay home this time' and 'oh Gale is here, but for some reason she's acting like a low level local reporter.'

great video! as much as i agree with 99% of this video, let’s be real, Scream 6 is great, but it’s clearly an homage to Scream 2. yes it felt fresh and had its own identity for the MOST part, but just like how Scream 5 was a rehash of Scream 1, 6 had SO many callbacks to 2 that it almost felt like the same movie (key word being almost). the directors and writers claimed to have had so much creative freedom, but still used the original films as a crutch to flesh out their minuscule, original story and that kind of pisses me off. i love the easter eggs and call backs, because 2 is my personal fav, but where does the line get drawn ya know?

If requels were the only problem, things would be a little less worse. I mean, I like both Scream, Candyman 2021, Halloween 2018, but we are in the era of IP Wall Street cinema. This is not only a horror problem, because this thing started with The Force Awakens and Jurassic World franchise. Anyway, outside the legacy sequel trends, we have movies like Five Nights of Freddy, Thanksgiving, The Black Phone, Smile and M3GAN, and even though I enjoyed M3GAN, I know that It's not only a movie, it's the start of an IP. Now we're going to have a lot of movies from the same franchise until the charm It's not there anymore. The movies are not only movies with it's only stories, are the beginning of a bunch of a lot of sequels. But I mean we still have some directors working with their own ideas, like Jordan Peele, Mike Flanagan and Robert Eggers. It's just that they are in the midst of so much cash-in fast food horror cinema.

I agree. The horror requel thing hasnt really been all that great. They trash on legacy characters too much in most of them and are just repetitive. For Halloween I did like 2018 and kills despite half the movie being evil dies tonight lol. The overall storyarch was what made it for me. As for Scream I agree that 6 was better than 5. I dont hate hate on 5 as much since do to the overall story being ok it is a nice job for Neve to pass the torch. That being said im on the bandwagon of not looking forward to the new Scream 7 because of the Melissa firing. IMO the Core 4 has one more movie in them to truly complete their story and the potential to fight ghostface along side Sidney and they cant do that if Melissa and Jenna are gone.

    • @77Creation
      @77Creation 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Agreed. They trash on legacy characters the same way young folks trash their parents. lol And the new Directors and Writers call themselves fixing what wasn't broken, and end up breaking the franchise worse.
That said, while I would have liked to see the Samantha Carpenter arc wrapped up as intended, the core four were corny to me. It's one thing for Dewey to survive nearly every film. But for both Mindy and Chad, especially, to survive being stabbed like that was ridiculous. And I'm not really feeling the ghost Dad thing either. That said, I agree Scream VI is definitely better that 2020.
I won't be boycotting because I'm interested in how Spyglass is going to carry the next one. And if they bring Neve back I'm all in for sure. Because until they reboot it, she will always be the Scream Queen of this franchise.

I love all scream movies but i do agree scream 2022 lacked so much compared to the other films. It lacked character development, killers were a bit more predictable this time. There was lack of character development. Missed opportunity in having the franchise's first duo of female killers (amber and liv). Lack of chase scenes. Less dynamic between characters compared to the first movie. Also we didnt get to explore the macher house like we did in the original scream movie.

Isn't the point of Scream 5 supposed to be a commentary on Legacy sequels that started with Star Wars and continued with Halloween, but introducing new characters to continue the franchise as a passing of the torch? Scream 6 only had Gale as a legacy character (well, also Kirby, but I consider her more of a returning character similar to Judy Hicks) and continued the storyline of the new characters. If killing off Dewey wasn't a risk, I don't know what is.
That's all I have to say. I'm done defending movies I enjoy since the horror community (especially the Scream and Halloween communities) has become so divisive and toxic that being a fan has become a chore.

Every single one of these requels have been quite inferior.
It's time to fully reboot every single one with a capable cast and crew that stays true to the source material. Fresh start. Clean slate. Period.
The OGs were helmed by horror culture icons, not DGG, and Danny McBride types. So the reboots need to be directed by serious horror filmmakers as well. No more Platinum Dunes, Blumhouse, PG 13 corporate hacks.
Hard disagree on the represenation thing. We don't need to default to all White, all hetero casts again. Because White, and hetero people aren't the only folks spending their hard earned money to see this content. We definitely don't need a social justice narrative in most of these films. But representation is a must. The US is diverse and so is the planet. It's only right that films reflect that.

The legacy sequel concept was handled best in Halloween 2018. I'm not a fan of that movie but I can see why it's viewed as a great film. Scream 5 and Texas Chainsaw 2022 are abominations. As someone that loves a good portion of the Texas Chainsaw movies it was diabolical to see how that managed to be released.
Now Scream 5 is basically an even worse version of The Force Awakens and Scream 1. This trend needs to end soon because they disrespect the past and they can't even make the films passable.
I also think the cheap nostalgia is hurting movie quality as a whole. Rather than focusing on good writing, directing ect. They put their attention to old memories, "Hey remember this scene? What about this moment? Oh I know you remember this".
Now the representation stuff that has plagued Hollywood has been a problem due to the writers not writing them well at all. Normal people aren't against diversity BUT if it makes that certain group look bad or it's executed poorly, people will point it out.

Scream could be good, again, if they'd just go back to it's roots. Make a movie about a serial killer, a real person who is clumsy sometimes and can be hurt their victims fight back. They were people who did sadistic things for easily understandable psychological reasons, they also made mistakes because criminals usually do. I mean, how were they going to explain the rips in Billy's shirt and all the red corn syrup on the front? We were playing a prank? Or when Stu settled for Gale looked dead but was just unconscious. When their plan seemed to have holes, it made sense, they were young and inexperienced, they didn't think to create contingency plans. Go back to when it was just a psychologically damaged human doing terrible things to other humans. In Scream 6 I actually felt bad for Chad, he didn't seem to have much purpose beyond forced love interest for Tara and repeating "Core Four" to remind us we're supposed to care about them. The plot armor doesn't help their cause, when someone gets stabbed like a billion times in the chest and back, they're not supposed to survive, if there are no stakes why should we care?
