    Even in script format, the opening scene was horrifying. They haven’t topped it yet.

      Scream 6 came close! I was totally thinking the movie was going to be from the killers perspective that time. Sadly not but still a clever intro nonetheless.

      @@qjones Nah, no intro will beat the first one. None of the sequels have ever touched the original in anyway. Scream 2 would be the next in line however. Loved that one.

    Such a powerful opening scene. Casey's death is absolutely vicious. It's not a cheap, one stab and it's over scene like in Friday the 13th or something. Casey's terrified, badly hurt, and crying and reaching out for her mother who is only a few feet away. It's brutal and sad. I definitely wasn't expecting it the first time i saw this movie. Very well written, directed, and acted.

    Casey's death scene was executed perfectly. But I do think the scene flows better in this script format. When they go back and begin changing things, but keeping aspects, some times we end up losing some of the narrative they're setting up. This was definitely one of those instances.

    Admittedly, having Drew Barrymore play the role was a brilliant move, as well. Where when seeing the trailer or the movie poster, then watching the movie, there's a false sense of security established in American filmmaking by that time, where the "star" always makes it in the end.
    Having the most famous person in your cast bite it in the first ten minutes goes a LONG way to establishing the stakes in the movie and making the audience very aware that NOBODY in this movie is safe. In ways that wouldnt have been apparent if say Drew and Rose's roles were reversed.
    Which gives Wes Craven a lot of margin to play with the audience. In that due to such a thing being established right at the beginning of the film, creates actual tension, whenever the Ghostface costume is shown. But then he can pull back , like "Nope, not this time." But all the way to the end of the movie, we dont know whether or not the intended victim will escape this time.
    Which is funny, because I never really had an interest in the filmmaking process or what went into it, more than just assuming that it was like any other job, where people show up, do it and go home. I never really saw it as "Art" any more than the movie being good, like a decent book or something. However, sitting in the theatre at 13, watching this movie actually woke me up to the actual artistry that goes into such a feat. Where the many times I watched it, I began to use it as the template to weigh against other movies, in which to see what I notice and get more out of that experience, as well.
    Case in point, something that always stuck out to me since that first viewing, was when they actually showed a quick shot of the hanging swing outside, when things were still good and there was no tension. At the time, I wondered why they would show that, as "we" werent outside and it wasnt moving the plot along in any obvious way, like showing the killer stride up to the house. Then when they showed her hanging from it, it all made sense, but in that "Oh yea... there was a swing" sort of way. I now get that it's called foreshadowing ir whatever, but at the tine, they were concepts I never cared for or took into consideration. Concepts which this movie made me care about.

    • @ct6852
      @ct6852 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah those little shots outside of the house and the swing really set the tone and the tension without knowing how or why yet. Just gives it all a sense of foreboding. The lighting on the house is really well done as well.

    I’m glad they didn’t leave in the part where the parents start retching…cause, that’s not what someone would do when they find their daughter…even in the horrific way Casey was left.

      That's what "you" wouldn't do. Characters in movies are "individuals" with different reactions and personalities. Most things people say are unreasonable to them are really relatable to others. That's why I never judge movies based on my own experiences because it's irrelevant to the story that's being told, but if we wanna get there, they probably started retching because of all the intense feelings they were feeling, not so much because they were disgusted.

    I think the final scene is better but both are good. In my opinion its scarier that she loses contact with Ghostface, making him much more elusive. The final product is snappy and feels more realistic to how someone would react in Casey's position, and the parents' too. I'm not a fan of the throwing up stuff. But the extended version has lots of good elements too.

    I'm surprised this guy hasn't gone into how Steve was originally supposed to be Billy
    The actor won the role for building and then Craven realized Skeet reminded him of Johnny
    So basically both opening kills were supposed to be the main characters lol

    I think one thing that people don't appreciate as much and what I didn't appreciate when I was younger, was Casey's mother's performance. I mean I don't have kids and I don't plan on ever having them personally but I've got nieces and nephews and I've had short relationships with girls who have kids and just the thought of not knowing where your child is while she's right behind you or right outside the door getting butchered and then hearing her on the phone. The panic in her voice is so real. And her constantly saying not my daughter or not my baby is just terrifying it gives me goosebumps. Scream is one of my favorite movies of all time definitely in my top three I have a right forearm sleeve tattoo of scream but that opening scene is genuinely terrifying and a lot of people have lost our appreciation for it because of stuff that's come after it that's just so gory but it really is so sad and really really scary because it could happen and just watching parents struggle with the reality that their daughter is missing and then their daughter is butchered is just horrific

  • @ct6852
    @ct6852 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The pace of the scene on screen was pretty perfect. Just wham, bam, Steve, crash...dead. But I think I totally would've preferred the one on the page. I love the drawn out tension and creeping around in the dark. Total sucker for that. Also would've been cool to hear Billy or Stu disguise their voice with their own voice and not the changer...like do the sing songy thing with a whisper or something. Would've added a dimension of creepiness.

    It’s easy to forget just how terrifying the opening scene was in the original. It’s something that younger generations will discover again with time away from the saturation of the films popularity. Once you have rip offs, spoofs and even the sequels a lot of the things that work lost x their cache once the costume became iconic and the film hit the cultural consciousness. I can viscerally remember even in the theatrical trailer when Casey says “why do you wanna know my name?” and Ghostface replies “because I want to know who I’m looking at” being one of the most terrifying moments I had ever witnessed. The other part that was super scary was the first time you see Ghostface through the glass of the door. Again, it’s hard to believe it now but compared to what we were use to at the time that mask was terrifying! I think mainly the satirical franchise “scary movie” changed the way we really look at that mask. We haven’t had quite the same satirical representation of say Michael Myers. So however iconic it’s still a chilling visual. I did like the aging of the mask in the recent sequel. I mean comparatively all the sequels have been great. Part four for me is the weakest. It’s the the only one I never watched in the theatre. Which I believe says something about where we were culturally during that time. It hadn’t quite been long enough for me to become nostalgic. Remakes were so abundant it was already annoying. I was in the 8th grade in February 1997 when I saw the original Scream in theatres. The film was released in December and had surprised everyone by doing so well that they held it in theatres for months. I went with my cousin and 8th grade girlfriend. My dad had to purchase the tickets for us because of the films rating. That evening would drastically effect my life. I was essentially Randy as were many young people. I was even aware of the rules of surviving a scary movie prior to scream. In fact the idea of rules being a thing was originally presented to me a few years earlier on the television show version of Wierd Science. I’ve always wondered if Kevin Williamson drew inspiration from that show.

    I think the theatrical works better because Casey did see her parents car but it was still abet of a distance and it would make sense that she would check to see where the killer is before making her move but that being said if it was filmed I would like to see the extended sequence but I can do without the parents getting sick!

    I still hope that if/when a 4K version of *Scream (1996)* is released, we will have both the Theatrical Cut and the Extended Cut. I don't mind the "every other frame drop" editing of Casey's death, but the Extended Cut scene with the normal speed (and the varsity guy's original death) were not just more brutal but not as gimmicky with the editing.

    I know its a moot point for some, but the script gives a lot of confusion as to who it actually was that attacked Casey through the window, then got hit by the phone. Can only assume Stu came in and unlocked the front door, letting Billy in. Stu went to look for her upstairs, Billy the kitchen. Billy looking through the closet, and all the way across the room. Casey ducks and crawls, all the while Stu comes back downstairs towards the window and sees Casey (giving the impression Ghostface teleported). They fight, alerting Billy who then attacks her and gives the final blow.
