  • Video-In this completely free DIY video we show you how to install Progressive shocks on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. We used a set of Progressive 944 Ultra Touring shocks and installed them on a Harley Street Glide.
These Progressive shocks were specifically designed to deliver a comfortable ride at a 1" or 2" lowered stance. The 944 Ultra Touring shocks utilize all the suspension travel provided by their full-length units, but in a 1" lowered ride height. The unique Ultra Touring spring combination not only delivers a lowered ride height while it's being ridden, but also while it’s on the side stand. After we show you how to install the Progressive shocks, we'll show you exactly how to adjust the proper sag so you get the best ride!

Ryan, Nice job with the tech and explanation. My 2014 Street Glide has these 944's and I didn't know enough to be sure if they were an upgrade or the air-ride are a better feature. Thanks for your insights.

Vanilla Gorilla just so you know shocks like these are vastly superior to the premium shocks that come on the Rushmore touring bikes like yours. In order for Harley to give the Road Glide and Street Glide that slammed look they basically shortened the shocks by an inch. Without including the rubber bump stop the travel is roughly an inch and a half which is why they bottom out so easily. The Progressive shocks with their compensator spring design let u order the 13 inch shock (as opposed to the stock 12 inch). You get 3 inches plus of travel AND maintain the STOCK ride height.

I had to put mine on with the piston facing down or the bag would rub on the shock. To each their own. Riding a 2012 street glide drop frame kit, so that might be the reason. Good video

Good video guys, a question for you, the original stock air shocks are 13" you replaced it with a 12", do they make 11" as well. Let's say I buy another brand that does, will the rear bottom out after dropping it 2"? I ride alone no passengers.

Ryan, the only thing I would add is the horizontal alignment of the shock: Harley swingarms are not well squared to the frame and bolting the Progressives in there, despite their instructions stating you can, can destroy the shocks pretty quickly. I speak from experience: did the exact install and followed the manual. A mere 15K miles later the shocks were toast. When sending them in to Progressive they confirmed that the out-of aligment of the swingarm was what did them in. So when I reinstalled I used washers to fill the gap between bottom and top bolt on each side. Notable difference in performance and now, another 25K later, they are still great. Not saying you should always, but now your bike and don't let the shocks deal with forces they weren't built for.

I changed out the suspension on my 2015 Sportster, I did both the forks and rear and it made a world of difference. I have a 2015 Street Glide Special now the same color as Ryan's I want to change out the suspension on it as well but I feel installing the Fork Monotube kit might be beyond my abilities. The rear is as about a simple upgrade as you can do but the forks are a bit involved and I want to add the chrome kit at the same time. The fork monotone kit is worth the upgrade it got rid of that spongy soft ride on my Sportster and it made a huge difference in the handling in the corners and no more front end dive when breaking.

Ryan, I have a question. 1st I wanna say you videos are awesome and informative keep'em coming. 2and, my question: I bought a 2019 SGS last year and I want to upgrade my rear shocks. I want to go with the 944's but I'm a 200lb rider and GF is around 150 would you recommend the standard or should I go standard/heavy duty? Thanks she goes on the weekends with me and I'm looking for something I don't have to adjust everytime she wants to ride.

They have 3 choices Standard under 250 lbs Heavy duty 250 to 350 lbs and Super Heavy duty over 350 lbs I weigh 225 and i am going with Heavy duty I figure if I have a passenger on that will be fine

I would have to move the bottom of that shock back 3 holes on a lowering kit so that I could touch the ground, I'm 5'7, 320lbs, and my inseam is 26 inches, I'm contemplating Burley 10.5 slammers, what are your thoughts on this, can they be adjusted for decent ride comfort ?

I'm really very curious about the 900 series. I love the legend and other fancy brands but I just feel I should not have to spend so much to get a smooth ride in the city, better turning and no bottoming out over the Stock Street Glide Air. What's your long term experience with these? Thinking about a progressive front kit as well.

wouldnt sag be adjusted by the rate of the spring ? when you adjust the shock the way you are it adjusts the ride height . yes it sits lower when the rider is on it but it sits lower when the bike is empty too by the same amount . also if your adjusting the jack to put shocks on side to side the alignment of the bike needs attention before you kill those super expensive shocks . your making one work harder than the other

Hey Ryan why the 944,on the street glide, and not the 440

That's what he wanted and purchased. As with most things, it's going to be rider preference.

How do we factor in the weight of the saddlebags and their contents? As well as the passenger. You doing a great job of instructing a basic shock install. But we all know there more to it. Progressive 444 shocks

That's why you set your sag with the weight you'll be carrying.

So we bundle up all the gear in the saddle bags and hold it while someone measure the sag? What about the weight of the saddle bags too?

Ryan, Progressive themselves, show the adjuster at the top. Why do you recomend the opposite way???

They can go on either way. Just be aware of clock-direction for adjusting, as not to turn the bell th e wrong direction

Very disappointed, just installed these on my 14 SGS to make it ride smoother because the stock shocks gave such a harsh ride. The shop tech said they take 500 miles to “break in” I don’t believe it. What do you say? The bike rides so harsh I’m seriously considering just selling the bike. I bought the SGS to do long road trips but I can’t ride this thing more than 30 minutes and my back and butt are killing me.

Did you buy the stiffer ones? There are two versions.

Ryan Urlacher Hi, I bought the Progressive 944 Ultras I told the shop technician I was wanting a recommendation for shocks to give me the smoothest/softest ride.

Ryan Urlacher The receipt doesn’t say which version just 944 Ultra Touring but I’m guessing that they are the heavy duty ones instead of standard.

david buchanan Thanks for the reply, I’ve decided to sell the bike I’m frustrated and tired of trying to make it work for me already spent too much money trying to fix it.
This bike is only suited for riding around town on smooth streets.
