  • Awesome Shocks!!! | Best SGS Upgrade Yet! | SGS = Street Glide Special!
    I take you all from the install to a good evening test ride. And even though the sag wasn’t even close, the shocks should have bottomed out quite easily, they were a 150% better than the premium Showa shocks that Harley puts on the Special Series Street Glide. The setting that turned out to be perfect for me solo on the bike was 5 turns in (1-⅛” chassis sag). I was able to get a break in the rain and test ride it with the new setting and it was incredible!
    Hope you enjoy the rides and video!

    Just saw your Progressive shocks install video. Thanks for posting it!! It answered a question I had for my Bitubo shocks install. They will be mounted inverted like your Progressives. I wasn't sure since the OEM shocks are mounted the opposite direction. Great video!! I'm a subscriber to your channel now.

      How do you like the Bitubo shocks? I just received mine but not installed yet. I did notice one shock is slightly longer than the other. Says that is correct in the manual. Never seen 2 different length shocks before

    Hey Shawn, awesome video buddy! I bought a 2016 SG and had to change the shocks straight away. The roads in Australia are not great and the SG really was like riding a bronco! I have installed the 944's and it has settled down to remove that spine jarring bumps that we had on the standard shocks. Would love to see how you took the sag out buddy as I am keen to adjust that too...cheers Shawn

    Would these be suitable to use on my 2019 Freewheeler ? When you take your measurement, use some blue painters tape on the fender strut and make a mark with a sharpie.

    Hey Shawn, how does these shocks compare to the 2017 stock shocks that you have on now. Are they better or worse. Thinking of buying the 2017 shocks and installing it on my 2015 RGS. If they are comparable I would get the 2017 shocks because of ease of adjustment. I ride solo and two up and I don't want to fiddle with 944 adjustment.

    What pipes are you running? They sound awesome! I am having issues with my 944's. I just installed them last August but I don't think I have them dialed in correctly. I can't find my instructions so I guess I'll just have to play around with them. We went for a ride yesterday and I would have rather been on a dirt bike. What could be wrong?

    I just installed these shocks to get a smoother/softer ride on my 2014 SGS, I’ve found them to be not much better than the lousy stock shocks.
    I called the shop that recommended them, the mechanic said they take about 500 miles to break in! What? Never heard of such a thing. I’m going to remove them try to sell them and try another brand.

      +Robert Robb - I think that's almost a Harley right of passage to start modding to one's liking... Lol For the 1st week or so, I couldn't imagine what would ever have to be changed (other than the standard intake and exhaust). I really didn't give the shocks much thought until taking that Ultra Limited for a couple test rides... Those shocks made for such a pleasant ride, I just had to change them on the SGS. Now that I have the sag set on these 944's and gone for a few rides, I couldn't be happier! One more thing will be in next week, and that's a 7" clear shield to replace the stock 4". I'm hoping that will make the headwind performance better while keeping the low profile look. I went with clear so I can go back to my standard chin mount with the GoPro. I look a little odd packing two forward facing cameras on my helmet all the time... Lol
      Thanks Robert!

    +fastbagger - I have the idle set at the standard 1,000 rpm. I didn't lower it with the SE Super Tuner Pro in fear of making the compensator noisier on takeoff's than it already is... Harley is using the SE Compensator as OEM on all the 103HO and CVO bikes. The complaints of the takeoff noise is massive, but it's a much better compensator and quite easy to avoid the noise when taking off. I forget sometimes and make it do it...

    That should be a significant change. Do you Have to change everything when you go 2 up .. I find I like having the rear a bit on the firmer side, not to firm but firmer than how it came... guess it doesn't help i'm chubchub, but I just like a planted rear end .. hehe. Very nice mods .. These touring bikes can be seriously addictive.

    • @ShawnSmoak

      +Roffa73 - The bumpstop was slid up on the shaft still from assembly. It got knocked down (or up in this case) and seated with the first good bump I hit... It probably made some noise till then, but I never heard anything.

    I know just where you're coming from with that mod mate. I know it's not as important on a big old cruiser, but I love to be able to dial in the suspension on a bike. The Triumph Speed triple had fantastic adjustablility and I dialled those things in perfect for my riding style.
    When I had the EXUP I changed out the rear shock for an Ohilns and man what a huge difference! It was a completely different ride.

    Thanks for sharing, great video. I was looking at the 2015 Street Glide, which cost here 34K in US Dollar, but decided than for the Street Bob (cost as much as a Street Glide in your area lol) --- That was my little rant about Harley prices in Ireland --- I just adjusted my shocks to position 5 of 1-5 after checking the owners handbook, damn I missed the weight settings when I decided for that bike lol. Would you think that progressive shocks make a huge difference at a Dyna ? We have bad streets here in Ireland ... and I mean BAD.

  • @OtisENGINEuity
    @OtisENGINEuity 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    that's funny, you still have the Road King on your mind.. One thing to remember is you can always put a bit of lithium grease on your bushing to keep them from squeaking or you can put a bit of spit on the steel sleeves going into the bushings to help lube them up and make them slide into the rubber easily and obviously it will dry pretty quickly.
    That thing is so much cooler looking without the bags, rack, and rear seat upright on it.
    Shawn.. you have a camera you can hook up to your phone.. use your gopro on a stand, aim it at the tape measure and watch it on your phone.. just keep it in a narrow mode so you have a chance in hell of actually reading it.

      +Don Still - It was a little odd to set up with the built-in 1" of sag, but it worked out great. About 1K~1.5K miles back, I gave the adjusters one full turn stiffer each after the shocks broke-in and I've been very happy since. I know I'm pleased when I never give the suspension a single thought anymore. The handling of the bike has been great from day one, even with the OEM premium shocks... Shawn ...Consider me confused...... I'm installing new Progressive 994's on my 2015 Street Glide. The supplement says to install rod end up if detachables utilize the top shock mount. The 4 point kit for detachables is mounted to the rear frame not the shock mount. Am I mistaken on what is considered the top shock mount?
    What detachable accessories utilize the top shock mount on a 2015 Street Glide?

    • @Doug_Morgan

    Hi Shawn, Love your videos. I had 944's on my 2013 Road Glide Custom. I found that the standard air shocks with 2" of travel gave a very harsh ride. As for the 944's, I was not able to dial in the pre-load to provide a decent ride. The shocks were stiff and bottomed out often. I called the tech's at Progressive Suspension and they were not able to help. The literature says that the 944's fit essentially all of the Harley Touring bikes. The issue with that, is that the Harley touring bikes have gained a lot of weight of the last few years. My 2013 is 90 lbs heavier than my old '05. I suspect that the springs on the 944's are too light. I ended up removing the 944's and replacing them with air shocks from a Road King ( 3" of travel) Although the Road Glide rides a bit higher, the ride is much better than the standard Road Glide Custom shocks or the 944's. How would you compare the STS's ride to the Spyder RT's ride over these rough roads ? Cheers ...Rick

    Question, why do you have to spend all this cash to sort Harley's out Shawn ,? surely a bike as expensive as this should breath ,drive and ride well from the get go or am I missing something ? I've never had to do this with my Hondas and Suzukis etc is this just something peculiar to HD ??

    • @harleydude3257
      @harleydude3257 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's the style of bike as far as ride goes, this is a special which is the same as my 2013 roadglide custom, as in the rear suspension is slammed.
      The do that to get a certain look that people really like, the downfall is you are sacrificing suspension travel for that slammed look.
      Harley's ultras are fine no need to mess with the suspension because they are great the way they are.
      As far as breathing first don't blame Harley blame the epa they are the ones who regulate that.
      Two we who own Harley's love to mod them so we open them up ourselves and add after market exhaust and air breathers etc, we like to have our bikes look and sound the way we want.
      You mention the metric bikes, you really are comparing apples to oranges there, when we say if you don't own one you will never understand, we truly don't say that because we think we are superior to you or your ride.
      We say it because owning a Harley is truly unlike any other bike and it is by far in my opinion the best bike out there.

    • @harleydude3257
      @harleydude3257 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do own several different bikes including a Suzuki, but as stated above the Harley is my favorite for so many reasons.
      Now you can ride them stock and never do a thing to them, I know of many people who do that, but for me and many others I modded mine because I wanted a sound and a look that was different from others and with the literally hundreds of thousands of aftermarket parts the sky is the limit as what you can do with these great American bikes.

      Had a warm weekend. Installed the shocks and they made a world of difference. Really made the ride much more pleasurable. Highly recommend them.

    Looks like a pretty straight forward instal. I'm glad it worked out like you hoped. Have fun on the new "Road King". :-) Couldn't resist.

      +sam smith - Yeah, it's quite simple on these dual shock setups... Maybe I should just use Road King as the Street Glide's nick name! Lol I get it half right sometimes when I call it a Road Glide...
      Thanks Sam!

    Great video! I have a 16 RGS, put legend rear suspension on. On way to Bike week in Myrtle Beach last weekend and encountered some terrain I hadn't traveled on before with the new Legends. Could not find a happy medium , it almost felt like I had a tire issue. Make a long story short, ended up going with the progressive standard 944. Love the shocks but I will say they are stiff. Have mine set at 1.25 turns is preload and I'm probably 175-180. With the wife on back and 50 lbs of luggage I was at 6 revolutions.
    Had them do the front springs too.

    Shawn, you do a nice job at explaining stuff! Would be any chance you could do a video checking critical Fasteners on the harley street guide? Like checking the torque of the motor mounts, frame bolts? i also love watching your videos on rides! Thank you!
