  • We show you how to install Progressive 944 ultra touring shocks on a Harley-Davidson and how to set the proper sag and pre-load. You can choose from the Progressive Ultra-Touring, which drops some Harley models 1" or the Ultra-Low, which drops some models 2". Make sure you choose the correct model based on what your overall riding weight will be. These shocks will give this Harley Ultra Limited a much better ride and we're getting rid of that terrible stock Harley air shock system.

    So, I wrote to Prorogressive as follows: I just purchased the 944 shocks and have watched quite a few review videos and a couple of installation videos and many are saying to install these 944s upside down with the rod side up and bell side down. What do you say?
    Answer: For this shock it can be either, the reason someone would mount the adjuster at the bottom is if you have a clearance issue with the bell, since these models use the top shock mount for accessories like tour pack or sissy bar, if you don’t have any clearance issues you can run the bell at the top so its easier to adjust once you remove the bags.

Pictures in catalogs shows them installed on touring bikes with the bell end up.. you guys are wrong. Installing these shocks the way shown in the video will VOID YOUR WARRANTY!!A

    Hi Ryan. I have a question for you since Progressive has not been too helpful. I have a 2019 Road Glide and I weigh in at exactly 250 so with boots and vest I am around 260. I purchased the Ultra Touring heavy duty since I also ride with my wife. Setting up the shocks I am at the first line and I can only get like .75 inch of sag. Do you suggest I go as far as I can go and then back it off a little or at my weight on the heavy dutys do you think .75 is all I will get?

    • @trublupennstatefan1438
      @trublupennstatefan1438 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David. I have the EXACT same issue as you. Same weight and sag. I ended up buying the standard springs separately and the tool to change the spring from Progressive. Night and day difference. The HD springs, to me, should be if you are in the 300-350+ weight range w/ or w/o passenger. Hope this helps. My system is really nice now.And I only have it tightened up to the 2nd line on the shock. So I will be good with my passenger too. On a ride where it will be multi day and have lots of gear and passanger, I’ll put the HD springs back on. It’s less than 20 min total time to do this.

      Nope. Your good, It actually doesn't change anything regardless of how you mount them. Just different years/models are different. It is about how the preload adjuster collar is accessible.

    So I took 2015 FLHXS to my trusted shop and told him I wanted 944 series. He went and ordered and installed 944 Ultra lows. I didn't realize this until I got home and went through the paperwork. I called him up and asked why he would install something that would lower my bike 2". Especially since I scraped both of my stretched bags just pulling up the apron on my driveway. I have been riding my bike long enough to know that I normally wouldn't have scraped. Even though I trust this guy, he told me straight up that even though he installed 944 Ultra lows, that my bike is not 2" lower.... I feel like I am being taken for an idiot.

    Thanks for the video - hopefully someone can answer this - if you replace the rear shocks, lower the rear by 1" - do you need to adjust anything on the front suspension or do you have to adjust the direction of the headlights as I think they'd be slightly tilted up (???) by lowering the rear and keeping the front the same. Not sure, but looking for the answer before I commit to doing these on my FLHTK. - thanks!

      They come in 3 different stiffness levels dependent on how much load you'll be carrying. Yes, if you get too much spring rate for your application it can be stiff. That's the same with any rear suspension ou there. There are many many shock companies for sure. Each to their own.

In Sturgis in 2018 I met Terry cable , he’s a flat track racer he builds his own shocks and now he builds them for harleys. Put 3000 miles after Sturgis . I enjoy your videos. But I will say I love my air shocks I ride to up and I like to fine-tune my ride. I don’t like to have to pull the bag to adjust the shocks. I like full range of motion for my shocks. Lowering a bike you just lose travel and clearance. I heard the progressives are good . I carry a pump with me and my wife or you wouldn’t believe the stuff I have to carry. She wants bought a concrete gargoyle like 80 pounds that I put in my tour pack. It was cold we were loaded. LOL yeah it’s nothing for me to pull the pump out at a gas station if I don’t hit full range of motion i’ll take a half a pound out or add. Pull my bags off would be a pain for fine-tuning. Do you enjoy your videos thank you. I support the blue

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The manufacturer instructions actually say to do that for this particular application. Shocks like this can be installed either way. Doesn't matter and they perform the same. In this case, they recommend it to keep the pre-load adjuster collar on the bottom for easy adjustment purposes. If it was up top it may run into the fender strut and be difficult to turn.
