The 4runner is probably the best do it all SUV out there right now. It's not the best off-road, with some Wrangler and Bronco trims beating its capabilities off the lot, and it's not the best hauler - the big 3 row SUVs with higher payloads and tow ratings beat it there. However it is VERY good off-road. You can fit A-LOT of stuff in it, especially when you take advantage of the tons of roof storage options for it. It can also tow a decent amount for the vehicle size/class - if you're not in a hurry. It's also the same length as a Subaru Outback just to give an idea on how easy it is to drive and park in the city and suburbs. All of that AND it's probably the most reliable vehicle currently in production - it's no wonder Toyota is stretching this generation as long as they can.

With all the bells and whistles on the Toyota TRD Offfroads, I use 4Lo + locker as needed, most often. It's simple, no hunting around for dials and buttons, and I can just drive. It get's me through everything all the other settings can with less fiddling. The tec is neat, but 4lo and locked is about all you need.

The main weakness of the 4runner is that it can't take full 33" or 35" tires without mods. The current tires are only 31.5". I hope the new 4runner will take larger tires from the factory.

For the first time I felt represented in this channel, working in Brazil Atlantic forest, I daily got my self in situations like these, lots of mud, much stickier clay and steep hills, driving a rented L200 4x4, without any locker, a not even AT tires. Its been a strugle.
Great video! I'd love to see what the outback or forester wilderness would do on the rock crawling portion even though they're not as capable as the 4runner! (Once the mud has dried up a bit!)
Argueably the most capable off-roady SUV that is still in production. There’s no match in the modern market to Toyota 4Runner in terms of off-road capabilities and reliability all the same time. Some may argue that Jeep Wrangler can come close to it but they always tend to forget that Wrangler may take you to the off-road course but there are not guarantees that it will bring you back home. Wow. Amazing video and course preparation. Best off-road reviewer I've ever seen! Also will do 10s of 1000s of miles per year driving the US, car camping, hiking in parks, etc. Which vehicles do you recommend I look at among Toyotal, Jeep, Bronco and Honda?
Great Video as always. Quite convenient to have a private trail. Based on the Video title I thought it was a new 4Runner Special Edition... The new 2024 TRD PRO Rock Trail Off-Road. I like it that the 4Runner looks so boring, but it can handle anything.
I have a 2024 off-road premium with KDSS and rock rails, wild peak tires and Uptop roof rack that is much better than the Pro rack. In the future adding Fox shocks with a minor lift of about 2 inches. I feel these additions will definitely outperform a Pro for about same money. Wish you would do the Test course with a 2024 4Runner with KDSS. Also upgrading the tires but not absolutely necessary. The KDSS will give you more articulation.
Having owned a '16 Trail with KDSS and now a '23 Pro, off the showroom floor, I prefer the Pro. The Fox suspension is really well sorted. The KDSS really shined on backroads thanks to the fat swaybars, but I felt like it definitely gave up on-road and off-road ride quality to the Fox suspension.
I own the 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the next generation. It lacks power(peddle commander helps) simple things like a power lift gate, rain sensing windshield wipers and the rear wiper is not good. I do not like the exhaust sound that is unique to the TRD Pro. Gas mileage is my biggest complaint. With all of that said I still love the vehicle. Its off-road chops are fantastic. I have 2 dogs and they love the roll down rear windshield. I wish mine had come with the rollout rear tray so the entire surface would have been flat when the seats were folded down. I purchased the Luno mattress($300) thinking they would have compensated for the dip down aft of the rear seat but they did not. Don’t waste your money on the Luno mattress unless you have that pullout tray. Finally the roof rack is kinda useless. Most well equipped versions remove this POS rack. I stopped plans to build this unit into a proper overlander in favor of waiting to see how the Land Cruiser is and of course what the next gen changes.
While being pretty good on the road and practical for daily driving. That's the strong suit of the 4Runner, if one is primarily focused on off-roading and rock crawling, the Wrangler is even more capable.
@@trailrunnah8886It’s too slow and lethargic feeling. Too much sway and nose dive. Love the way it looks. Fit and finish is cheap though for all that money.
@@ryanb8736 definitely agree about it being slow and lethargic, the powertrain was outdated even ten years ago. Interior materials do mostly feel cheap, however, the build quality is fantastic. These are still built in japan, mine is 11 years old with 170k miles on it, and no squeaks or rattles, and everything works. My old Grand Cherokee was an absolute rattle trap by the time it hit 100k miles.
For those that want a 4Runner before they add more moving parts to a smaller engine, a wireless CarPlay adapter is like 50 bucks on Amazon. A wireless charging center console tray is like 20 bucks. Boom no more wiring your phone for any phone things.
I hope they’re not going backwards with the 4Runner. Idk what Toyota was thinking giving the new Land Cruiser 8.7” of ground clearance, a laughable spec for modern off-roading. A Toyota employee told me they were ready to release the new 4Runner in 2024 but then the Bronco came out, so Toyota had to do some redesigns to make the 4Runner competitive. My guess is they probably made the 4Runner a more on-road oriented vehicle but the demand for the Bronco was so great that Toyota had to go back to the drawing board. As for myself, I’ve test driven the Wrangler Rubicon, Bronco, etc. and I’ve decided to keep my Lime Rush Pro forever. I can always count on it to start when I push the button, wherever I take it.
The low clearance measurement is due to the 9.5" ring gear in the rear diff. That necessitates a bigger diff housing. The 8.7" is measured to the bottom of the rear diff. The rest of the underside is high and tight. Our 5th gen 4Runners only have an 8.2" diff. According to another video on the GX, the articulation on the midsize TNGA-F trucks is improved considerably over the previous gen vehicles. Long story short, you can't just look at ground clearance as measure of off roading. Subarus have great ground clearance thanks to independent suspension but terrible suspension articulation (basically fully drooped as they sit). They are going to be great at straddling things but have a tire in the air as soon as there is any sort of mogul.
Why test the 2024 besides giving Toyota a free commercial? I almost pulled the trigger but decided no way given the limitations the other 100 video reviews talk about. I lived with one for a week in the Wisconsin winter as a loaner from the dealer. I couldn’t live with the known cons. So, I bought a Subaru Outback Onyx XT and never looked back.
@@drivingsportsYou prefer the round headlights over the jeweled linear ones? Will it be more of a personal vehicle or a channel vehicle where it'll be the standard review vehicles go up against for these test courses
@@chibbyylolI like both. First Editon is getting built first. That’s a priority. Also, love it comes with sliders and a platform. It will be a channel vehicle.
This is a deceiving answer. When you order a vehicle from Toyota you can’t do a factory order. Toyota dealers do not have any input on what they order. Toyota Motor Sales decides what is shipped to the dealers. The dealers are on an allocation system. The dealer doesn’t know what they are getting until it ships from Japan. Recently bought a 2024 Toyota 4Runner. All the Toyota dealers I dealt with confirmed they have no input and customer requests are not considered. Needless to say dealers are not happy with this Toyota Motor Sales policy. When I recently bought my 4Runner that I wanted with almost no options I didn’t want, I flew a thousand miles to pick it up. I saw it on the dealer website and it had recently shipped from Japan. Put a down payment right away and picked it up about 3 weeks later.
Interesting. I think my TRD OR with the KDSS and KO2's would have just walked it w/out all that trail reconfiguration and multitude of line checks. I get it tho, not your rig, so have to be especially delicate. And you are judging the course for even less capable rigs. And with that in mind, I think it is going to be too much for anything you want to just drive through with.
You're comparing a brand new model to one of the most sorted out cars from Toyota (famous for the Kaizen philosophy) in history after almost 15 years of production, so the answer is no way.
What we've learned...Nitto makes garbage tires, dont use 4low if you want wheel spin, and remember to pack water and a lunch...in case you get stranded on Ryans off road course.
rear locker can also make the lateral slide happen out back if your off camber. good test. but it's a mistake to lock the rear, just use the rock mode and it's capabilities won't be hindered by the rear shifting on you.
I'm a big fan of your tests, and a big fan of 4runners. But how did you ever off road 20 or 30 years ago without 360 camera's. You need to rely more on picking your lines and hitting that line.
I’m really hoping that the sixth generation 4Runner has a straight axle upfront instead of independent front suspension. I have a jeep wrangler Rubicon unlimited and it is absolutely superior off-road. It would be nice to have a secondary vehicle if the 4Runner did go to a straight axle upfront.
Toyota has Land Cruiser 70 series and has front solid axle. Too bad your politicians set laws won’t let it easily import. All you off roaders are out of luck to play the best toy on the earth.
I finally got to sit in it at the Silicon Valley Auto Show. It still looks so nice and inside its rugged but is a little dated. And the rear seats do not lay flat which is a big miss on these trucks whom can take you into amazing places, but you can't stretch out in it. Thanks for the vids... but missing the chicken run.
The fact is that he has a camera on this vehicle and yet he gets out to see what's in front of him. So using a camera is useless. I am a avid 4x4 enthusiast, and getting out is what you do.. lazy is the only thing I can think when people rely on just a camera.
Love the detail on off road you do ....however I have a jeep Cherokee trailhawk and I looked back 3 years and I cant find one review ..lots of the compass and the Grand Cherokee and even smaller model but nothing on the one I drive have you ever done a review on the Cherokee
Typically the press fleet only has vehicles that have had updates or are all new. Because of that Jeep didn't bother to put the Cherokee into the fleet in recent years since the fifth-gen was introduced around 2014. I have had them as rentals, and do appreciate them. But just haven't had press access. Now that they're discontinued, it looks like we'll never get one now. BTW: Toyota considers a new color new enough to put another 4Runner TRD PRO into the fleet. Lol.
weird that they put the older style wheels on the 2024. Not that it matters much because of the 6th gen that just came out. This one still looks better :)

“We are in a better position now” continues to take the same line
I don't know but that 4runner would go through all this with ease my 2021 taco sr5 4x4 does this any day
Why test the 2024 besides giving Toyota a free commercial?
I almost pulled the trigger but decided no way given the limitations the other 100 video reviews talk about. I lived with one for a week in the Wisconsin winter as a loaner from the dealer. I couldn’t live with the known cons.
So, I bought a Subaru Outback Onyx XT and never looked back.
Great job as always, I think you are gonna keep us guessing as to which Land Cruiser you ordered. 😊
Hi, on the landcruiser you ordered, which trim you chose and approximate price ?
First Edition. $77k. 😮
@@drivingsports thank-you for the quick response.
Do you think the new generation will be as reliable as the 5th gen? Thank you. Fan from Ukraine
You're comparing a brand new model to one of the most sorted out cars from Toyota (famous for the Kaizen philosophy) in history after almost 15 years of production, so the answer is no way.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser LC70 series in the middle east now uses the same v6 1grfe engine as the 4runner. How about that.
keyless start was introduced in 2020.. my 2020 venture has keyless...love the color of the 24
Introduced and available before it was standard.
Good point!
4 Runner is a beautiful machine. The 4 litre v6 is dead reliable.
A good workout for you and the truck.
Love the new obstacle ridden little course. I wonder how a Bronco on 35s would do on it. hmm
Muddy Terra looks awesome
Great vehicle and nice color 👍
Pushing the best of the best to the limits👍🏼
TRD PRO FLOOR MATS: “This should be fun.”
Great video! It would be awesome if you can take the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness trim on that new Trail course you made. Would love to see that!
I'm a big fan of your tests, and a big fan of 4runners. But how did you ever off road 20 or 30 years ago without 360 camera's. You need to rely more on picking your lines and hitting that line.
If the completion didn’t offer better cameras it couldn’t be an issue. Just a bold reminder as to the age of the 4Runner.
Hey man.. I’m so looking forward to see you adding the Land Cruiser on that curse road then the 4Runner trd pro to see which one performs better :)
Absolutely zero chance the 6th gen 4Runner will have a solid front axle.
They do lay flat if you pull the seat cushion up first
Beautiful
It will be interesting to see how the Tacoma Trailhunter deals with this course
We’re ready for it 🙌
Running both ways would be the most productive use of the course.
Frustrating that people forget how to use mirrors over a silly camera!
The fact is that he has a camera on this vehicle and yet he gets out to see what's in front of him. So using a camera is useless. I am a avid 4x4 enthusiast, and getting out is what you do.. lazy is the only thing I can think when people rely on just a camera.
whatever happened to the Ranger Raptor you had ordered?
I wonder how Honda Pilot Trailsport would do on the new course. Probably would need better tires for this one.
Lol.
Looked in the old videos, and we actually did the Cherokee Trailhawk when it was last updated in 2014. 😂 th-cam.com/video/UtSgmErrFuU/w-d-xo.html
@@drivingsports geez 2014 ! I still learned a couple things
I suspect that a Wrangler Rubicon would walk up that by comparison.
i took my wrangler offroading with 4HI. No biding at all with turning as well.
4 runner is pretty good but so overpriced.
Ryan, you mentioned the Land Cruiser on order but didn't mention the Ranger Raptor. Did you cancel that order?
Nope. That’s still on order.
I love my 22 sr5. We dont need a 6th gen just keep it as is
Dude I think u should only use lockers if you are driving in basically a straight line
weird that they put the older style wheels on the 2024. Not that it matters much because of the 6th gen that just came out. This one still looks better :)
