I strongly believe this is the most reliable new or used vehicle you can buy. Simple old school engineering. Anytime someone ask me what is the most reliable and durable vehicle I always mention the 4runner. Preferably buy a 2wd base model.
Exactly my friend I agree. I would say out of everything I mentioned, rust is probably the biggest con of this vehicle other than that, rest of the items are covered under recalls or are small enough where an owner can easily take care of it. Base model would be best

I own a 2013 Limited that I purchased brand new. It currently has 270,000+ miles. The only major issue was an alternator that had to be replaced around 200,000 miles. Tires, brakes, and oil changes are basically the only major things I’ve spent money on.

%th Gen 4 Runners have electronically controlled throttle which cases the lag is acceleration. A bypass module is available that makes the throttle much more responsive, its about 250-300 dollars.
Toyota can't afford to let the 4Runner, Tacoma, Corolla or Camry fail... imo, those are the models that built the brand. You got me with that 4Runner Problems headline 😂😂😂. I would pick the 4runner over the GX460 even though the GX may be more rugged. Thanks for another informative presentation and Happy New Year bro 🎉
Facts! Toyota has sold a lot of units for each of those cars you mentioned. I too think a 4Runner is a better choice used compared to a GX due to less complexity and you don't have the Lexus tax for parts. Thanks again for supporting sir as always and I pray you and your family have a blessed 2024 as well!
im suprised you didnt mention the rust on the frame, its a relatively known problem from factory because toyota doesnt do a goodjob factory coating the frame.
My 2016 has been the least troublesome vehicle i have ever owned and ill be honest its been beat to hell and back. Im talking about water up to its mirrors on a good stormy hurricane day😂
Great video as always. I have an automatic 2000 Limited 4wd v6 with almost 300k miles, no rear locker tho. 😢. Its been a tank with just basic upkeep /maintenance. i plan to get the timing belt replaced, transmission cooler and new head gaskets to get her ready for a Magnuson supercharger. hopefully i can hit another 300k miles again but with a little bit more passing power. No vehicle is perfect but I want my 3rd gen to have just a tad bit more power.
About to do head gaskets on my 2001 with 143k. Its had the 2nd gen TRD supercharger since new. Did a 2.2” 8~9 psi pulley at 128k miles along with the URD 7th injector kit. Picked quite a bit of power, but now I’m getting coolant in the combustion chamber after a hard highway pull. Hoping I don’t have cracked heads and it’s just the gaskets. New heads are $2,700 😢. I got a set of head studs to go back together with too. Hoping for the best. Love 3rd gens! The turning radius of the 3rd gen vs my 5th gen is crazy. Had the relearn to park in tight lots with the new one!
@@Invertmini1212 Its an 8 year old Truck so things go wrong. That said..many mechanics will tell you that the XREAS system can and do break. They tend to get slow leaks and eventual wear out. My toyota mechanic has removed many an XREAS system and replaced them a third party system. The 4th Gen had XREAS system as well but it tended to last longer. I wonder if its do to the fact that the 5th gen is heavier? Its just something to watch if you own a 5th Limited.
My 2013 did it at 65000. Replaced it with a different recommended suspension system. It may ride a little rougher but was cheaper to replace the problem.
My fourrunner is absolutely horrible on roads that have any sort of snow or ice on them. Braking is horrible and slides all over the place, what am I missing? It’s a 2017 will all terrain tires
Highly recommend Michelin Defender LTX MS2's... Best all season tires you can put on your runner. Go check the reviews and they're rated for 80k plus miles.
I remember when I started driving I used to see older Nissan XTerras (10-15 years old) in the $4000-6000 range on car lots.. I cant believe ten year old 4runners are so expensive, I know it's a Toyota but man, I just can't adjust with the times. Do you think the used car market will cool down?
The Nissan counterpart is def less expensive this is true my friend was going to make a vid on the Xterra thank you for reminding me! And no sadly this will not cool down instead they will keep cranking up the heat and occasionally do a dance where price goes down but interest up or the interest is down .2% and prices go up 20%. They want to keep turning up the pressure on people until every human compromises and accepts the mark that locks them into their society, they’ll say the “gov will take care of all the people’s needs” and everyone Rich and poor will comply and those that don’t will be ostracized and persecuted.
To be fair. You spend more for the toyota that is a fact. However, the fact that they keep their value through the years means that you will get that much more when you decide to sell it down the line. pros and cons.
I would challenge you on your max tow ratings between the earlier pre-2017 and 2017+ 5th gen 4Runners. My owners manual rates my 2015 4Runner Trail Edition as having a max tow rating of 5,000 lbs, not 4,700 as your video indicated. On some of the similar 2007-2014 FJ Cruisers there was a 4,700 pound tow rating, so that might be the source of confusion. Your source might be wrong.
4700-5000 there’s a subtle variance over the model years my friend but I’m sure we can all agree those are basically the same numbers and this is not great at towing as far as body on frame vehicles go.
What is the most popular model of 4Runner sold. I see a lot of Limited on the lots, is that one of the more popular models? because it has more features? How may 4Runners does Toyota manufacture per year?
Toyota’s motor was their choice. If they were concerned about power, they’d keep the v8 or even supercharge the 4L. So, current 4 cyl 4runner is a reason I will not buy it. I drove 4cyl at taco and 4cyl 4runner is no different , motor sounds like my lawnmower tractor. Now, Toyota can crash and burn with every turbo engine that Toyota has. Toyota has issues with their 3.5 L turbo and they are now going to have issues with their 4cyl. = most of Toyota vehicles now are garbage… buy pre turbo versions and let the new junk rust on their lot.
Dont buy one after 2013 bc the design flaws bad recalls on fuel pumps stiff shocks high vibrations on paved roads and window buttons that turn into puddles in seconds in drive through in rain and short out the whole system costing 3400 dollars that sucked that warranty would not cover.Nope I sold my 2022 4runner and got an older Sequoia with more power and lots more room with the same gas mileage the 4runner got with a v6 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😆😆🎯

I bought my 40th anniversary last December. I had to reserve it when it was incoming. Drove it off the lot with 2 miles on the odometer. A little over a year later it's been all over. On and off road. 24k miles already and nothing but smiles and great memories! I had it undercoated and that's honestly it. Going to take my time with mods. Tires will be first when they're due. I wanted to jump on the 23' because I wanted the legendary 4L drive train etc. I love how simple it is, zero complains. MPG isnt the best and probably the last modern vehicle with a 5 speed auto lol but worth it in my opinion. Great video! I'll definitely be sad in a few decades when this thing dies. Until then, everyone enjoy!
172k miles on my 2015. Zero issues since new. I’ve never reset the fuel mileage calculator and it’s averaged 19.3. Consistently gets 21 mpg on the highway.

Love my 2020 Limited, it's my baby, oil sprayed under coating every year and 3k oil changes since new. I hope I'm alive to see it hit 1,000,000 with just tires and brakes.
New sub here. Great video and i concur with all of it. Bought my 4runner in 2023 and absolutely love it. One thing i would mention is that the manual says change the oil every 10k miles. I do it every 5k. It's the way I've always done it and I've heard you're better off. Thanks for the detailed video!
Hey thanks so much for your love and support my friend. Congrats on the new 4Runner! It’s such an epic vehicle very enjoyable to drive. I’m also happy to see you are changing the oil every 5,000 miles many new car manuals are saying you only need to change at 10k but 5k is much better. Enjoy the ride!

@@MaximumDIYGarage We drive our vehicles for 15-20 years. I had a 78 Corolla that I owned until 02 when it died at 488K miles. My 2007 4Runner just hit 200k (and I’m expecting at least another 200k out of it). Runs great, slow as hell, terrible fuel economy and definitely some body roll. But god damn… I’ve done some sketchy stuff in that vehicle and have put it in situations where it really should not be and it gets me home every single time. Love these machines, they’re bulletproof and will never give up on you as long as you don’t give up on it.
When was the last time you changed your suspension? I have 2007 limited (264k) and put some old man emu 3-inch suspension on it 4 years ago and now I can drive it like my BMW. Now I am gonna do it to my wife's 2017 SR5.
I always appreciate when you do videos like this because you're practical in your reviews and analysis I'm sure I've mentioned it before here but I bought my 2016 4Runner Trail Edition new in late May 2017. I'm closing in on 187K miles on the ODO as of this post. I've had only one major repair (leaking water pump replaced at 108K). Other than that, it's been routine maintenance with normal "wear and tear" items (e.g. brakes, tires, oil, etc). The 4Runner is the last of its kind here in (North) America. Tried and true. Simple and rugged. Nothing super fancy with these rigs but they get the job done on a consistent. If you want a more comfortable ride: go RAV4 or Highlander. You want more power? Go with the Lexus GX460. The same with luxury. Every vehicle has its pros and cons. All the issues that MMG mention are legit but if you're want a mid-size BoF SUV, that is true to that name, look no further than the 4Runner.
"high mileage" is defined differently to different people to some like me 60k miles is high to others it can be 100k, 150k, 250k, 400k, etc. Obviously if you find 2 4runners that cost $15k but one had 150k miles and the other had 250k miles, def go with the one with less miles. I thought it was obvious so I didn't think I would have to explain that but glad you stopped by my friend because it's not obvious to everyone.
I do get your point Sir. Not here to argue or debate. It's just a general rule of thumb is lower the mileage and less wear and tear to worry about and less visit to the repair shop. 20 years back when I wasn't financially stable as now then I bought cars with higher mileage coz that's all I could afford, and I remember it was like buying someone else's problem. I was fortunate enough to be able to buy newer vehicles afterwards and couldn't be happier. Bought a 2018 4runner Sr5 Premium brand new and traded it for a 2023 4runner back in April , same trim. Just wanted the upgraded features that was lacking in 2018. I traded my 2018 with 44,000 kms and it still ran like day one with zero rattle. Love my upgraded 2023 Sr5 Premium. Happy New Year!. Cheers from Canada.
@@teddynaicker2997 I’m so glad you have a 2018 my friend that is great to hear and thanks so much for taking the time to share your experiences with high mileage cars. This is exactly why on my channel I would tell people to stay away from many used cars and try to find something in their budget that is ideally a new car. Sadly, it’s impossible for many families and their budget truly is something below $15k and they don’t have a choice. Of course interest rates are sky high on used cars so I really feel for those stuck shopping in the used high mileage segment
Just wish they would fix the steering wheel shaking problem. 2nd 4Runner I’ve had and no amount of wheel balancing and alignment has fixed the problem. Even after road force balancing didn’t help, dealership said it’s within tolerable limits. Are you kidding me? Since when should a shaking steering wheel be tolerated?
Bottom line is, is that there are only so many BTUs in a gallon of gas and a limit to the efficiency you can squeeze out of any mechanical device, so I am puzzled as to why that is such a mystery to people. Buy what you want and live with it.
Climate control Fahreheit to Celius fails. You cant change it either way. Expensive repair. Mine is 2021 but I see it across the modle years on the forums
As the original owner of a 2008 SR5 RWD 4Runner I can say that it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. After over 15 years it has been flawless, with no problems at all (fluid changes and tires the only things I replaced). Everything still looks and works like new, not bad for the original price of 28K. I hope the next version of the 4Runner continues this level of reliability, character and simple design. I do find it sad that my beautiful red color is not stocked be dealers, all they want to sell is white or black..
Almost every year for the past seven or so years has been an annual sales increase for the 4Runner. Just goes to show that old school proven reliability with conservative technology prints money for Toyota, pure profit. The 1GR-FE has been around in an earlier form since 2003 and is by far the most reliable SUV engine available today. It’ll remain in production for the Land Cruiser series sold in the Middle East for years to come. An absolute legend of an engine.
My 2014 Limited has 137k miles on it and haven't had a single issue with it... Other than basic maintenance and replacements it's been the most reliable car I've owned besides My 2000 Toyota Camry when I sold had 378k miles on it.. Same V6, absolute bullet proof engine/drive train. My runner has taken me on more adventures than I can count... Both on and off road.
Bought a 21 new and have had not one issue. I fluid filmed the frame immediately. Compared to almost any SUV except Lexus this thing is not going to piss u off with problems. If u need a pos shit stelantis Jeep or a Range Rover to impress u wont impress urself with the repair cost and problems. U will be sorry if its ur daily driver. Jury is out on the radical redesign of the 6th gen 4 Runner. I would never buy the first year modal of a radical redesign or completely new design.
I have a 2011 4Runner experiencing sudden acceleration issues. Toyota customer service is saying that nothing is wrong with the car and that I must have pressed the accelerator and the brake at the same time, which I didn't do. The car accelerated when I had the brake on switching the gear from reverse to drive. I'm extremely frustrated.
Yea they're pretty expensive here as well and you tack on near 10% interest rates for used ones... not a pleasant time to be shopping for used vehicles
@MeynMotorGroup yeah definitely glad to have a well maintained Accord touring. Gonna ride it out as long as possible. Will probably buy new in a few years when I can pony up for a dream car.

Best bucks for my the 4 runner. Bought a 2014 4 runner at 30K , 10 yrs late 140k miles and its 25K
Great review, love my 2017 4runner ❤
Nice! Glad you have a 2017 my friend that’s a great model year
Toyota can't afford to let the 4Runner, Tacoma, Corolla or Camry fail... imo, those are the models that built the brand.
Mentioned it multiply times but thanks for stopping by. God Bless
That’s an easy fix
My 2016 has been the least troublesome vehicle i have ever owned and ill be honest its been beat to hell and back. Im talking about water up to its mirrors on a good stormy hurricane day😂
That is awesome!
That’s great to hear my friend glad it’s been so reliable for you and I pray it continues to be enjoy and thanks for stopping by
About to do head gaskets on my 2001 with 143k.
2016 Limited - XREAS suspension went out at 58K miles. I replaced it with Bilstein 5100's and hardly noticed a difference.
Wow 58k miles?! Mines at 137k and not a single issue.. Ive been on plenty of off road adventures too.
@@Invertmini1212 glad to hear it. Seems to be they go early or last forever. I hope you have zero issues for many more miles! 👍👍
@@FatalAnimal Did you ever find out how it went or why? 58k miles is still really new. Any other issues with yours?
Listen to the Toyota Car care nut on u tube he explains why this thing is so reliable. Also the car wizard as well.
Best review ever!
Thanks!
The 2010-2013 Trail edition is thee best looking by far....
My fourrunner is absolutely horrible on roads that have any sort of snow or ice on them. Braking is horrible and slides all over the place, what am I missing? It’s a 2017 will all terrain tires
Missing 4WD?
proper winter tires will change all that guaranteed
Yeah, it’s the tires…
Highly recommend Michelin Defender LTX MS2's... Best all season tires you can put on your runner. Go check the reviews and they're rated for 80k plus miles.
Have you checked the alignment . .. ,?
In rust places sadly they don’t last but if you are south of Illinois you should be good
I remember when I started driving I used to see older Nissan XTerras (10-15 years old) in the $4000-6000 range on car lots..
Old Xterras were awesome . Not 4Runners but solid trucks
Got a little rattle in my front passenger dash….. 23 TRD off road…
Ask the dealer, they should fix that under warranty for you
Clean your glove box
Empty liquor bottle?
It's annoying when he's scrolling the website while talking on his TH-cam channel.

Very outdated interior that is very hot wheel toy like quality. Nty!
Algorithm
Dont buy one after 2013 bc the design flaws bad recalls on fuel pumps stiff shocks high vibrations on paved roads and window buttons that turn into puddles in seconds in drive through in rain and short out the whole system costing 3400 dollars that sucked that warranty would not cover.Nope I sold my 2022 4runner and got an older Sequoia with more power and lots more room with the same gas mileage the 4runner got with a v6 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😆😆🎯
Modern overpriced station wagon

@@MeynMotorGroup No problem bro
Still daily driving a 20 year old 4th Gen, bought new. Flawless
That is awesome my friend!
Me too 2007!
my daughter is 2nd owner in an '08 it's a very nice vehicle. My wife and I recently bought a 1 owner '19 w/ 39K miles. love it.
172k miles on my 2015. Zero issues since new. I’ve never reset the fuel mileage calculator and it’s averaged 19.3. Consistently gets 21 mpg on the highway.
excellent
Well damn mine stays at 16.5-16.7 no roof rack or anything and I drive like an old man cause of my cdl

I live in central PA and get 19 to 22 in combined driving. I never jump on the gas or drive above the speed limit and easily get at least 19.
Perfect call on the oil change 👌, I change my oil every 5k and I use Mobile 1 0w-20.I own a 2010 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER LIMITED WITH A 4.0L V6, IT REPLACED MY 1997 OLD MOBILE BRVADA, 4.3 L V6 AWD.

It fit our requirements of being reliable, being able to tow a trailer, good cargo capacity, wife was comfortable driving it, and my daughter is comfortable riding in the backseat.
I have a 4th gen just hit 400k and my X-reas system is still original and still working well
What do you mean by X-REAR?
@craigbosko2229 X-REAS NOT REAR is a system that interconnected the front and rear shocks (front driver to rear passenger and vica versa) it helps with stability while driveing
I’m afraid of the new ones coming out with the turbo engine. They simply won’t last 300-500K miles.
I’m sorry, but how many people drive their car 300-400k miles? I put about 6k miles per year on the car. At this rate I need to own it for 50 years to get 300k miles out of it. Nah, I’m good with the brand new updated 2025 with a 4-cyl turbo and 6-speed manual transmission!
@@MaximumDIYGarage We drive our vehicles for 15-20 years. I had a 78 Corolla that I owned until 02 when it died at 488K miles.
The money that we could waste on new vehicles every few years, we invest.
This is why we own several homes and an apartment complex.
Because of being frugal, I retired at age 43 so now what I would have been making while working, my renters pay my salary.
I too seldom drive anymore, so as long as something is reliable, I’ll keep driving it.

Is it faster than a 2004 Jetta 2.0L? I was thinking about upgrading my car, and fairly sure the 4 runner is probably faster haha
When was the last time you changed your suspension? I have 2007 limited (264k) and put some old man emu 3-inch suspension on it 4 years ago and now I can drive it like my BMW. Now I am gonna do it to my wife's 2017 SR5.
I always appreciate when you do videos like this because you're practical in your reviews and analysis
I'm sure I've mentioned it before here but I bought my 2016 4Runner Trail Edition new in late May 2017.
Thanks so much my friend and yes massive congrats on owning a trail edition 4Runner def a special vehicle!
Problems - None. On my second.. 2018 ORP 2024 ORP aftermarket build.

4Runner windshields are terrible...but everything else is great
Why so terrible if i may ask?
@Anomize23 they crack easily because of how they're formed and sit on the vehicle...any tiny pebble , object will damage your windshield
FJ cruiser’s windshield is a bit worse
We rented one to test drive on a roadtrip without KDSS. Whoa what a boat!! Then we bought a Trail with KDSS. Huge improvement.
He's wrong, don't buy any vehicle's with high mileage even if its a 4runner. If you can afford one with a lower mileage then thats the one to go for.
I have to differ with a strong V6 engine. Ive driven a VQ40DE, and that is a strong V6 engine. The Toyota V6 is blah!

Bottom line is, is that there are only so many BTUs in a gallon of gas and a limit to the efficiency you can squeeze out of any mechanical device, so I am puzzled as to why that is such a mystery to people. Buy what you want and live with it.

How did this generation of the 4Runner last 15 model years? It's good, sure. But it was never great. The previous generation was great.
I’ve got a 2019. Zero issues until 97,000 miles. Not sure completely the cause but cylinder 5 is low on compression.
I bought a 2010 4Runner back in 2014 it now has 188k miles it’s being a good car had replaced brake pads and rotor every 2 to 3 years that’s about it.
