A LOT of people won't agree this was worth the money, and for them, that is true. For you, I think it was. Primarily because of what you said about features. I would not take the 2024 TRD Pro for what it is over the LC you just bought. I hope it gives you years of reliable fun. Are you going to swap out tires? Are the wipers rain sensed? Did you say it has adaptive cruise? In our state, those things have become features I would very much like to have had on my old 2018 4R TRD OR. I have anticipated a comparison video like this one! I was contemplating between the new LC 1958 and the last year of the 5th gen 4Runner and I put down a deposit on a 4Runner TRD offroad premium this week. I’ve always wanted one and figured I could always sell it down the road and get near what I paid for it new. I want to see how the LC performs over the next few years.
We have a lot of vehicles- we have a horse farm and love our Toyota 4Runners/Tacomas for daily driving and around the property. Other than towing it’s hard to beat the 4Runner. The Pro models (we have Tacoma and 4 Runner Pros) are fantastic off road. To me the cameras are just unnecessary. I prefer the older LandCruisers and wish they still had a V8. Good luck, I think you made a good choice, considering you have a channel for reviews. There isn’t much need to review a bullet proof 4Runner. However if I were giving advice to most consumers - looking for ONE long term vehicle- I’d definitely recommend the 4Runner.
You never should have gotten rid of the grey TRD Off Road you bought. Should have driven it until the wheels come off. Newer designs are becoming too focused on tech and not the basics like engines that work and reliable transmissions.
The 4.0 L V6 is under tuned for longevity. The 2.4 is over tuned for 2023 emissions standards. Turbos recycle exhaust for combustion. Use premium fuel and let the oil cool down after a minute or so before turning off and you can still get longevity out of the 4 cylinder’s though. Toyota still makes a good engine.
Glad you bought a Land Cruiser. I’ve had a first edition for 2 months and it’s been so great. Just took it off-roading today. Your channel is 1 of only 3 I subscribe to. Thanks for the great content

I actually passed on my allocation I received for the exact same LC and bought the exact same TRD Pro 4runner. I love both but I want to see what they will offer in the packaging on the LC and the new 4runner over the next couple years.
Haven’t seen much yet diving into the 2.4kw onboard power. Any chance to do a demonstration of that feature, like using it while the vehicle is off and seeing how the engine can start automatically to fill the battery back up?
It’s like any other Toyota hybrid. You have to have the vehicle on. You have to push the button every time you start the vehicle. It’s an inverter that works off the high voltage battery. So if you’re running all 2.4kw I suspect it will run often.
@@TobyCostaRica sorry yeah I meant engine off with the vehicle in whatever accessory ignition mode it needs to be in. I just think it’s super useful when out camping or similar. Can even lock the car up and have an extension cord out to a tent for running a fan or heated blanket all night. Pulling 2-400 watts continually would last a good few hours before the engine would kick on, charge up the HV battery before turning back off automatically for another few hours. Or run a host of morning essentials like coffee maker, electric griddle etc and just let the vehicle turn on for a few minutes every so often without any additional input by the user.
@@ALMX5DP it won’t let you lock the car, with the size of the battery, and the specs I can have AC running inside my Sienna van for 15-20mins depending on ambient temp before the van starts for 5 mins. Best use based on my knowledge is to transfer power to a portable battery like a Delta Max 2
LOL at some of these comments. For the vast majority of 5th Gen 4Runner owners, the top complaints have been how the 4Runner is hopelessly outdated and underpowered in 2024 standards. Now that they have seen the 6th Gen (and the LC250), the 5th Gen is suddenly back to being Toyota's irreplaceable chariot of the gods. You simply can't squeeze any more power and torque out of that naturally aspirated V6. Toyota gave what the whiners complained about - more power. The result? Even more whining than before. LOL!!!
The new one is still under powered, so there’s no really improvement. Plus it takes premium gas so now you pay just as much at the pump.🙈😉 BUT WAIT! only difference is you’re paying over 50 grand, the gas tank is smaller, and the interior is smaller too! THE ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE AN ECO VEHICLE! Only youre still PAYING OVER 50k!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 😂😂 😂😂😂
It'd be nice if you took the same line for the articulation section in both vehicles. Also, as you must surely know, the best 4Runner model for articulation is the TRD Off-Road with KDSS, as it disconnects (hydraulically) both swaybars below 12 mph. I've never given two hoots about all of the electronic nannies as I enjoy driving my vehicle and having as much control over it as possible. The only thing that I like on the new Prado is the Torsen centre-diff, but again, only for paved road, mixed condition (snow and rain) driving , as you still want to lock the centre diff for maximum slow speed, technical and difficult off-road conditions. Funny how we are - 3 years ago you could buy the best (non-70 series) Land Cruiser in the world (the LC200) for $86000 in the US, and now you're paying $77000 for a Prado :) Imagine getting rid of the top of the line Supra and giving consumers the GR86 for the same price and having them thank you for it - good one Toyota!!!!
Put a peddle Commander on the 4Runner and it feels much peppier. I have the 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner and I like it. Only reason I would upgrade to the next gen would be if they significantly increase the MPG
Huge trade-off with that. People buy the current gen 4Runner for its reliability. Reliability comes with naturally aspirated engines that have been perfected over the years. Look at the new tundra engine. People complained about the outgoing V8’s mpg, and the new turbo V6 gets maybe 2 mpg better and will not even come close to reliability of the V8
Previously had a 5th gen 4 runnner, now have a GX460. In the future when we get another SUV (keeping the 460) the LC is the one I'd be interested in. The improved MPG and the physical interior controls are more appealing to me than the GX550. Also the first editions round headlights look great.
@@drivingsports there's your next video. Old vs new. I personally would still take the last Gen. I think it looks better and has unmatched reliability.
@@drivingsports yeah, that was a premium compared to the low quality of the new land cruiser. You can feel the low quality on that light trunk of that cheapily made cruiser. NOT THE SAME
Panhard bar mounts could be a reason why the LC flexed better on this test. The 4Runner's panhard bar mounts to the axle on the driver side which might limit driver side droop. The LC's passenger side droop might be limited for the same reason.
I hope you'll redo this video when the new 4Runner comes out. I know you said you're preferring the new comfort and tech stuff. As my vehicles have leaped forward in tech over the last decade (newest was a 2020 Stinger GT2), I've started heading in the opposite direction. The older tech/design of the 4Runner kind of appeals to me.
I just bought a 2024 4Runner TRD Offroad Premium. I love it. I really thought about waiting for the 2025 or grabbing a land cruiser, but those 4 cylinder engines just worry me considering the problems some people have had with the new tundra's. I'm just not sure these new Toyotas are built with longevity in mind which is why I bought a Toyota. I think many new cars have been engineered to be obsolete and replaced within a decade. I love my 2024 4Runner so much, I'm considering buying one of the old 8 cylinders because the 4runner is that great.
Your videos are the best, thanks for taking the time to do them and walk us through everything. I want to buy a Toyota Land Cruiser as well so can't wait for coming content!🎉❤
I wouldn't touch those new vehicles with a 10-foot pole especially when something reliable is available. Some people are just too trendy and can't help themselves because they care too much with other people think & say... Got to think for yourself haha
New subscriber here, loving your videos. We're still waiting on the new Prado over here in Australia, but we've already got the 300 series LandCruiser. We never got the 4Runner, other than the first and second series. I love my FJ Cruiser, it sounds a lot like the TRD Pro you're driving in this, but I have put a sports muffler on it. As for the 4.0 V6 being slow, I think they're sufficiently fast for the suspension. Any faster and they'd be dangerous.
Just curious, for the money, why did you end up skipping over the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail? Its in the same price ball park, Lexus generally has better quality standards and overall it has better performance then the LC, larger tires, more trunk space and better towing numbers. Love the look of your Land Cruiser though better than the lexus and Land Cruiser is a better nameplate in my opinion haha.
There's a few reasons to go with the LC trim + Premium Package over the GX. The LC is equipped much better than the GX550 OT, but is roughly $12k cheaper than the similarly equipped OT+. The GX also has abysmal real world mileage, whereas the LC can exceed 20 mpg. I also prefer the physical HVAC controls. Admittedly, the First Edition trim is a bit overpriced.
Same 265/70r18 (32.5 or "33s") tyres on LC250 and GX. Only the lowest LC trim has smaller 245/70r18 (31.5"). Of course you don't need to swap the OEM ATs on Overtrail, whereas the LC ones can go off right on dealer's lot. Rest is true of course. But the way Toyota market segments is that you can never have all the features you want :- )
First thing needed: new tires (such as Falken Wildpeak A/T’s). *For the 4R: ‘S’ is not ‘sport’, it’s ‘sequential’, to keep it in and/or control which gear it’s in. C’mon, you should know this!!!
No spare on the rear tailgate is dumb. It would only help sales! And actual off road capabilities. And with the mandatory rear camera doesn’t block rearward views
I actually like how long Toyota keeps their models around for. It shows that the vehicle is reliable and dependable for several years to come. And I like old school simplicity of their vehicles; no constant rotation of complicated bells and whistles that no one needs or really uses, which goes out of date within a year or two that other truck and SUV brands employ. Toyota's dependable conservatism is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing.
What is your opinion on the Land Cruiser requiring 91 octane while the Tacoma with the same i-Force Max only requires 87? The premium gas may be a dealbreaker.
@@montechie The strange thing is both the Tacoma and LC are rated for the same HP and torque figures. I wish Toyota would address this and let us know what the discrepancy is.
Just bought a 2016 4R TRD Pro that I'm picking up today. I sold my 2008 200 Series Land Cruiser about 2 years ago. Haven't owned a 4R since my 2005 model but I'm looking forward to it. The new pricing and less "luxe" is probably the way to go for Toyota and I'd love to have one someday but not at these prices. Luckily both being 500k mile vehicles built at Tahara the used market now is the way to go since it has "settled" down from the insane 2022 prices. I still wish Toyota would bring the 70 series here with safety features so it could be sold for around $45k. I don't think it would cannabalize too much. Its even more utilitarian
Thank you, you are probably the first one to discuss GC, would appreciate if you can please confirm what is the minimum ground clearance because Toyota is providing all confusing numbers, not sure what is correct?
Caveat: on road manners of 4Runner equipped w/ KDSS probably rivals the Land Cruiser. Sway bar is also beefier on KDSS models for minimal body roll. 4Runner w/ KDSS also has increased articulation under 12mph with essentially a disconnectable sway.
Really enjoyed this video and the comparison. I personally have a GX and have been looking at the Sequoia. I have had a 4Runner in the past and both have their pros.
Hey Ryan. I’m on the verge of pulling the trigger on a Land Cruiser Premium, trading my TRD OR 4Runner with KDSS. Been a long time fan of your channel and really respect your real world testing and insight. In your opinion, does the LC have more body roll than a KDSS 4Runner? I really appreciate how my 4Runner handles curvy roads for such an off-road capable vehicle. I’ve driven the new LC four times on straight streets so no chance to really test handling. Thanks!
Less nose dive on the LC vs 4R, but it’s been YEARS since I drove a 4R with KDSS so I can’t speak to the handling characteristics. The LC does have a fair amount of roll, and it’s faster, so that may accentuate the tippy feeling.
A lot of ppl have been wondering where this Land Cruiser draws its styling from? Well my uncle in Nicaragua owned a 1992 Land Cruiser prado which at the time was an offshoot of the 70 series land cruisers with a more plush utilitarian use rather the commercial ones. This Land Cruiser draws it’s inspiration completely from that model first gen prado
Ryan, The new Land Cruiser seems to offer substantially more headroom than the 4Runner though both models have lost the 40/20/40 rear seat From what I have seen, most Land Cruisers seem to be coming from the Hino Hamura plant rather than the Toyota Tahara plant that builds the 4runner and GX. But I did not buy it for amenities, I bought it for its rugged long lasting capabilities.
congrats on the new buy. hopefully we see more of it so we can make informed choices. give us bad and good
Excellent review! Crazy how the wheel just hung in the air on one, stayed put on the other. Thanks for your fun hard work!
This makes me want a FJ Cruiser even more I don’t know why. Congrats on the buy!!
At dinner yesterday parked next to an FJ with the similar sand/white paint.
@@drivingsports yup I think the two toned roof is what did it. Love the color you chose.
I sat in one of these Land cruisers when waiting to sign for my 5th gen runner.
I thought , this is gorgeous. But didn’t feel regret.
I’m happy with my 4Runner. Maybe in a decade I’ll get into a Land Cruiser. But today I’m loving 4Runner.
As a current 4Runner owner and potential Landcruiser owner; this has been the best and most helpful review video by far! Thanks.
You are literally paying for a downgrade for this cheaply quality made vehicle. Did you feel the trunk? MAN toyota got you big time😂 not only that and it’s smaller
I bought the 1958 version, but honestly really wish I spent more. The surcharge is insane tho.
Sell it and get it from one of 4 Toyota dealers in California that have 0 markup on this LC250 😮
I still would take a 2010 used 4Runner over anything new at Toyota.
This comment makes zero sense. So if given the chance to have a used 2010 4Runner or a 2024 4Runner you’re going to take the used 2010?
2010 4runner was the 1st year of the 5th gen 4runner 😂😅
The first gen 5th gen 4runner is good looking
Nothing moonman said had anything to do with another generation.
2010 4runner $10-12k
2024 4runner $60k+
Same engine amd mostly everything else.
I'd get a 2010 too for the price they're at now
@@Blvck0ne oh yeah, all day long. If you need a loan to buy something you are either broke or buying a vehicle you can’t afford. Easily write a check for a rust free 2010 in great shape.
VERY relevant comparison! I am a 2 time 5th gen owner, so I love this! I put a Magnuson supercharger in my 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road, and no more slow lol. It wasn't cheap though lol
this review has me even more convinced to go 4runner 5th
There is no wrong answer. 👍
@@drivingsportsjust say what everyone knows, I bought this junk because it will help me make more money with my channel you . I will see how fast you will flip when it’s going to be recalled like tundra
Thank you for the excellent videos and car reviews! Could you please do a snow review video for the new Land Cruiser and GX550 at some point? It would be great to see how these vehicles perform in snowy and icy conditions.
It just needs a roll down rear window and it would be the perfect replacement for the 5th gen 4Runner.
So effortless on the trails. Love this thing! Can't wait to see more off-road adventures from your first edition.
Glad you bought a Land Cruiser. I’ve had a first edition for 2 months and it’s been so great. Just took it off-roading today. Your channel is 1 of only 3 I subscribe to. Thanks for the great content
Just trying to make yourself feel better that you aren’t the only one that is a sucker for paying so much. You know this so don’t deny. You guys are the reason why Toyota keeps raising prices. This is a freaking Prado dudes for $80k and that’s IF you didn’t pay mark up which Toyo TH-cam fan boys usually don’t. Just unsubscribe. Sorry.
@@frankc5739 I don’t need to make myself feel better about anything. You clearly do. I can tell you watch all the negative click bait on TH-cam targeted towards stupid people that are easily influenced. Sorry you can’t drop 80k on a truck bud, write it in your diary. I don’t want to have to reply to your pathetic, insecure, loser bullshit. Get a life
Tell me how you justify getting a Land Cruiser when the 2025 4Runner will have the same engine. Toyota is shooting themselves in the foot by killing all their reliable vehicles
@@bobsacamano6402 I don’t have to justify shit. Bought it and love it. How do you justify buying a 14 year old truck with an interior of a public bus that rides like ass? It’s under warranty and it’s just a truck. Not my whole life ;)
@@PuddingReserve So many jealous dudes in the comments. Mad they can't afford it. Props to you, enjoy your new LC!
Honestly, it looks like Toyota just made our '15 4Runner SR5 with 60K miles worth a helluva lot more money. We'll be keeping it, thanks
Thanks for the info. As a 2013 FJ Cruiser owner- not ready to buy the FJ Hybrid Yet-, but am impressed with the updates. I like that it's 4 door, and also all of the electronic updates. But part of me still respects and loves the straight forward no fuss.
I actually passed on my allocation I received for the exact same LC and bought the exact same TRD Pro 4runner. I love both but I want to see what they will offer in the packaging on the LC and the new 4runner over the next couple years.
60k for cloth seats?! Whaaaaat
I’ll pay extra for cloth over leather.
@@jysmtlcloths seats will last 3 times than leather seats
@@ALMX5DPI got one I can’t wait to see how that works as far as powering stuff
@@ALMX5DP it won’t let you lock the car, with the size of the battery, and the specs I can have AC running inside my Sienna van for 15-20mins depending on ambient temp before the van starts for 5 mins. Best use based on my knowledge is to transfer power to a portable battery like a Delta Max 2
If they just put a V6 in the land cruiser I would have bought this shit in a heartbeat.
This is the review I needed in my life.
Had ro rush back to my office to watch this 😂
It'd be nice if you took the same line for the articulation section in both vehicles.
$80k/ $1500 a month land cruiser is just something I cant wrap my head around.
The last one sold in the USA was the 2021 Heritage and it sold out at $90k MSRP.
@@drivingsports there's your next video. Old vs new. I personally would still take the last Gen. I think it looks better and has unmatched reliability.
Prado
@@drivingsports yeah, that was a premium compared to the low quality of the new land cruiser. You can feel the low quality on that light trunk of that cheapily made cruiser. NOT THE SAME
Congrats Ryan! Land Cruiser and Raptor you are set for any and every off road adventure! Rock and Roll! Ready to see where it takes you
4Runner all day! Bulletproof with timeless design!
Panhard bar mounts could be a reason why the LC flexed better on this test. The 4Runner's panhard bar mounts to the axle on the driver side which might limit driver side droop. The LC's passenger side droop might be limited for the same reason.
Ryan could you take a 22 or 23 GX460 and GX550 through the same trail?
I hope you'll redo this video when the new 4Runner comes out. I know you said you're preferring the new comfort and tech stuff. As my vehicles have leaped forward in tech over the last decade (newest was a 2020 Stinger GT2), I've started heading in the opposite direction. The older tech/design of the 4Runner kind of appeals to me.
When your done with the 4 runner I’ll take it 🙏🏻
😂
Longer term 4Runner all day!
I like the direction Toyota has taken with the styling on this and the fact that there are meaningfully distinct trim levels.
The 4Runner is so good and bulletproof I just can’t justify the land cruiser other than the need for the next new thing.
Toyota should keep the V6 option available on top of hybrid power train to the customers. 3.5 liter V6 is bullet proof
We have another video coming that will cover all these questions...and then some. 👍
The GX has engine recalls……
Same 265/70r18 (32.5 or "33s") tyres on LC250 and GX. Only the lowest LC trim has smaller 245/70r18 (31.5"). Of course you don't need to swap the OEM ATs on Overtrail, whereas the LC ones can go off right on dealer's lot.
Rest is true of course. But the way Toyota market segments is that you can never have all the features you want :- )
the front sway bar was what got me!!! incredible!! compared to connected, need that mod. thx
Love love love my new LC !!!! Most amazing vehicle ever !!! Will be getting another for my wife
I loved my little old dodge nitro which was the same size but without paying over 50,000. Feel sorry for that wallet of yours🙈
First thing needed: new tires (such as Falken Wildpeak A/T’s).
*For the 4R: ‘S’ is not ‘sport’, it’s ‘sequential’, to keep it in and/or control which gear it’s in. C’mon, you should know this!!!
Nothing like a midday Driving sports drop
Do a comparison between 2024 landcruiser, 5th gen 4Runner and 2025 4Runner on off road
No spare on the rear tailgate is dumb. It would only help sales! And actual off road capabilities. And with the mandatory rear camera doesn’t block rearward views
Aftermarket is already filling that need.
I’m going with 4runner before watching. At least I hope you did lol
Good choice
I actually like how long Toyota keeps their models around for. It shows that the vehicle is reliable and dependable for several years to come. And I like old school simplicity of their vehicles; no constant rotation of complicated bells and whistles that no one needs or really uses, which goes out of date within a year or two that other truck and SUV brands employ. Toyota's dependable conservatism is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing.
What is your opinion on the Land Cruiser requiring 91 octane while the Tacoma with the same i-Force Max only requires 87? The premium gas may be a dealbreaker.
I wonder about that too, must be a different tune. 91 gets expensive fast. I imagine the new 4runner will run 87 as well.
@@montechie The strange thing is both the Tacoma and LC are rated for the same HP and torque figures. I wish Toyota would address this and let us know what the discrepancy is.
Fulltime 4wd robs more power from the engine due to drivetrain. Premium mostlikely makes up for that loss in hp and trq.
The owners manual on the land cruiser clearly states 91 isn't required.
It's not different, modern engines can adjust timing to account just fine. They did that in the 2000s
I do like the two colors you have. I personally prefer the Terra color.
Thank you, you are probably the first one to discuss GC, would appreciate if you can please confirm what is the minimum ground clearance because Toyota is providing all confusing numbers, not sure what is correct?
I own still new 2014 FJ Cruiser. 57 miles on the odometer. Storage kept. Same color. It's a MUCH better vehicle! True sport utility!
Would love to see a comparison on the off-road capability between new LC and old LC (GX460)
Kinda looks like a modern day Honda element
That 5th gen looks so beautiful compared to all that plastic on the land snoozer (which is just a worse version of the new GX)
Really enjoyed this video and the comparison. I personally have a GX and have been looking at the Sequoia. I have had a 4Runner in the past and both have their pros.
Congrats! What an awesome machine you got there. It's spectacular, really.
I will go for 2024 4Runner. :)
The Land Cruiser I test drove at Servco Toyota was a Land Cruiser trim and it had the white and yellow Rigid fog lights.
Where was yours assembled?
I saw that too. Mine was from Hino... the heavy truck plant.
@@drivingsports I believe they made the FJ Cruiser in that factory and the old T100 pickup.
Tahara plant for me. Numbered in the 600’s
