Everyone has an opinion, so here is mine. The best things about the Grenadier are its locking differentials and the overall ruggedness combined with comfort. Otherwise it may be too long, wide, high, heavy and complex under the hood. I would have sprinkled a little SUZUKI JIMNY on it, making it 186'' long, 72'' wide, 70" high, 112" wheelbase, weight under 5,000lbs, powertrain 4.0 litre n/a inline six cylinder, solid axles front and rear, 8 speed automatic/ 6 speed manual, 3 locking differentials and a bit more original exterior design though I like the front end look and utility.

As the very happy owner of an 09 H3 with front/rear lockers, 4:1 low range, and the rare 5 spd manual transmission, I can say from experience and from direct trail comparisons that a front locker is the cheat code. It goes places it has no business being. I've had it up trails that you usually only find lifted jeeps on and it does surprisingly well.

I personally don’t like the engine comparison of the BMW engine being “as good” as a true Toyota engine because if you are at all mechanically inclined you know BMW developed the motor, sent it to Toyota where they spent a bunch of time revising the motor to meet the absolute bare minimum standard Toyota has. You might say, “This sounds like a great thing…” As if everyone has forgotten that Toyota did the same thing with Subaru utilizing their boxer 4 cylinder, which is the Achilles’ heel of those cars even though they are incredibly underpowered.

I did drive the Grenadier on a pretty easy course, because my fiance reserved one, but ultimately canceled. I tow a caravan (travel Trailer). The heavier weight of the Grenadier should make for a more stable tow vehicle. In my country (New Zealand) we can also get the 3 litre diesel in the Grenadier, which has a heap more torque for towing. Also the ability to use it in 4wd low ratio without having the centre diff locked would be real advantage for low speed maneuvering.

The B58 that's used in Toyotas is slightly different from this. Toyota did the same reliability tests and sent back the parts that failed and made BMW improve those parts for Toyota. But BMW uses the same engine they started with.

    • @holdenc3082

@holdenc3082 Toyota flips the bill on their iteration of the engine, and BMW keeps costs of its own cars lower with the original internals. Otherwise, it'd be a great marketing tool for BMW, given their fame for lack of reliability, to shout about the help from Toyota for reliability.

Toyotas not perfect but it’s a night and day difference between British vehicles and Toyotas as far as reliability goes. I had the drive shaft fall off my 2002 Land Rover discovery while I was merging into a highway. Plus it had an oil leak the dealership told me they would never be able to fix. My FJ and 4Runner after that never had a single issue.

This is a joke right? British vehicles are some of the most poorly built, unreliable vehicles for the last 60 years. I guarantee the Grenander has 10k in problems, at least, before it even hits 50,000 miles. Just like Land Rovers, just like Jags, just like Astons.

If you choose the Eneos you better have lots of cash and patience. No dealer network; unknown reliability; very expensive spare parts; unproven design and powertrain. A great vehicle for someone who has the cash and wants this as a toy. If you want a reliable, proven, supported, and robust vehicle that will give you 300,000 miles of trouble-free service (or more), then you should go for the 4Runner. If I had the cash, I might get them both.

This obviously goes without saying but the Grenadier is the closest to a new 80 series one can buy.
I love how you point out the plusses of the Grenadier in the knowledge that the 80 series had those same plusses 30 years ago...largely apart from two things:
    1) the 80 series locks work better.
But, and, 2) the power train of the Grenadier is admittedly more potent (tho perhaps more questionable).
Maybe over time the Italian axle locks on the Grenadier will capitulate into agreement with your command. That's how it went in 1942 anyway. lol

The 4R TRD OR is a better well rounded experience. More affordable than the Pro. AND can be optioned with the KDSS. (for less money) Regardless, I would take the Pro as exampled here over the IG. Not that the IG is bad for a tractor OR. Because that is where it will shine. But you have to GET to the OR bits for it to shine. Unless you want to trailer it to the OR areas in a luxury tow rig, it just seems to make more sense to get a vehicle that has the manners and comfort of on roader that can do OR when you get there. And IF you wanted to tow something very capable to OR in later, why spend 80+K on the IG when you can spend 15-45K on a SXS that weighs less and is just as capable if not more so. 🤷‍♂
