When it comes to snow, it really doesn’t matter too much what rig as long as it’s 4x4, but definitly tires is the most important factor along with clearance if you are dealing with super deep snow. These traction aids are great if you have good actual snow tires or at least 3 peak snow rated AT’s.
Appreciate you giving the runner a chance. Other reviewers would have thrown in the towel. That is why I like your off road videos. You keep trying. Keep it up!
I picked up a 2023 TRD off road premium with KDSS…… it’s my pre retirement vehicle most likely the last vehicle I will buy. Plan to drive it until I can’t drive anymore. Love the truck….did two quick oil changes to get all the wear metal out of the engine at 700km and 1300 km respectively…..glad I did. Lots of metal… hopefully by the next change it will have resolved itself and the break in is complete. I will plan to do the same with all the other fluids…. Transmission transfer case and diffs. Just to make sure everything is wearing as it should and get all the grit out of there.

Respect to this man for showing the limits of the car. I gain nothing from watching a review of a vehicle that sugarcoats everything and does not show what you can and can't get away with. TH-cam could use more authentic car content like this. Thanks
At 11:30 you touch on my favorite part of vehicles like this. The mechanical nature of their four-wheel drive systems, where you can just sit there, gunning it and spinning the tires, and it won't complain. No clutches to heat up, no CVT to overheat, no warning messages and cut power. It'll just let you hammer on it all you want to your heart's delight. Sometimes you just need that. As capable of some of the Subarus and things like the Honda Passport are, they just don't give you that mechanical nature and robustness. Also, in this particular model, there's just something so satisfying about slipping that four-wheel drive shifter into four low. The manual tcase shifter is one of my favorite features of my 4Runner.
Absolutely hated the Nittos on my Pro. Switched to Wildpeaks and immediately noticed the difference. The handling in the snow and rain is so much better!

@Drivint Sports TV We picked up our new 2023 Subaru Ascent last week. Swapped the wheels/tires for 18" with Wildpeak A/T Trail and headed up to snoqualmie pass. First tried to make it to Gold Creek Pond, but too many unprepared drivers got stuck and were blocking Lake Mardee Rd. So decided to hunt for the old offroad trail you use to use for testing, but took the wrong exit (Tinkham Rd). Didn't realize it was the wrong one, but the fun part of the road was closed already anyway. Ended up finding a fun forest service road out near north bend (NF-5600) and had a blast in the snow. Still hope to find your offroad trail. The Ascent did awesome in the snow! We encountered 18" of snow at the deepest. Already have the full 3 piece skid plate here, installed the rear diff plate, installing the last 2 plates (transmission and oil pan + front lip) this weekend when I can get the car on some ramps, then headed back up to the mountains this weekend. Your channel and videos have been a huge inspiration for exploring more 'off' roads in the area. Also really enjoy the 4runner. My Wife really wanted one, but lack of room in the 3rd row plus storage was a deal breaker for us. I'm looking forward to the redesign Toyota has for it soon and hoping they give more room for the 3rd row (we are a family of 6).
Of course it's going to make it up! It's got new tires, which are good-enough for heading right to an off road condition, and it's got a mature operator behind the wheel! If those tires were 2 years old, there would have been even more struggle in that snow/ice scenario.
I watched a guy from California do the TFL course in his Bronco. Andre asked about problems in one year of ownership. He replied new engine at 8 months. The 4Runner may be slightly less off road worthy vs the Bronco BUT it is leaps and bounds more reliable. Isn't the 4 Runner still Made in Japan. BTW..I love your reviews. They are so well done.
The BEST, most articulate review I have watched in years, Since Chris Harris made a DB11 review into a work of art. Having driving a no frills FJ Cruiser for 10 years, I have already regretted not getting the 4runner then. Today, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk has priced itself out of contention, the RAV4 is great for a toy, the Cayenne gives me the towing I want (for a great deal of money for a used one). But this 4runner impressed me hugely. Loading up a TRD 4runner today, it looks like exactly where SUV's should be. The only question for me now - do I wait & see what the updated 2024 is going to look like or not. I think I would love this before the update though.
@@inttruders - well, there's plenty of new competition coming in 2024 model year. If the 4Runner isn't here I can't choose it. But plenty of other choices - I even saw a new Sequoia SR5 down the street recently, and it looked smaller than I expected. There's a thought.
What you continue to exhibit is just how important traction is. Which is why 4 wheel is better than 2 wheel, Traction control attempts to serve this to the operator by sending power to wheels that grip. The locker further servers this physics factor by assuring more wheels are getting power. When all this fails because of physics factors like grade and terrain (Snow &/or ice, slippery rocks etc) than traction breaks down despite the features. So, the driver here understands in certain situations momentum can help. (Again, physics; object in motion tends to remain in motion..) to a point... Speed in forms of a 'bump' can assist a vehicle over a large obstacle. Speed uncontrolled can make things very dangerous however. But physical factors can defeat even momentum. For instance uneven ground x speed = friction break. Or the Tire leaves the turf. The faster the tire goes without friction = even less control. (Like when your foot hits ice under a powder snow) Off roading has so many terrain features, adding snow and ice simply makes any of it more difficult. Having a tire that can shed snow pack is huge. Again a great tire packed with compressed snow is a slick. A mud terrain would have served you well on that track. I enjoy off roading for the physics of it. It really would make for the BEST physics classroom. Kids would LOVE IT! Adding in ropes & Recovery, block & tackle, leverage lessons. Nice job.
How would a 2023 4Runner Limited compare to the TRD Pro for off roading - IF you needed to take it off road???? I will be buying a 2023 Limited in a few days and even though I don't plan to take it off road, I am interested in knowing how capable it will be if needed.
Same! I really hope they give it better off-road chops to compete more with the Bronco. I would love to be able to fit 35-in tires on one without a crazy amount of work.
@@trailrunnah8886saying “better off road chops” about a 4 Runner is a crazy Statement…It’s one of the best off road vehicles ever produced and exponentially more reliable than a Bronco…..
Yup the TRD Offroad is just like the Pro. Except for the BBS wheels and different tires, Fox shocks, TRD skid plate, roof basket, etc. So yeah its exactly the same except for the very items people would kill to have on their lower trim levels. It”s not the same dude.
Nitto tires are overrated. They actually perform pretty poor in snow and ice. Your content is good and I appreciate you pointing out the important things that need to be addressed
I have a 2021 and my only complaint with the vehicle is the tires it comes with. At a minimum I'm going to get a set of Blizzaks for the snow because the stock tires are bad in the snow. I may go to BFG KO2 for summer. But I love it and have no regrets buying it.
Just what I needed tj get through my bio break at work. Love the 4Runner and absolutely your videos. You are doing Buddha's work, sir! Cheers! Do you miss your ORP??
Most likely some variant, probably like what's used in the Tundra, however, rumors are it'll be a turbo 4 cylinder instead, either way much better for power than the outdated sluggish 4L V6, but seriously if they do the Tundra Turbo V6 it'll be quite detuned. Most likely the Tacoma will get the same treatment soon as well, but next 4Runner is going to be more along the lines of the Highlander with a independent 4 wheel suspension and AWD instead of 4WD.
I am absolutely certain the new 4Runner will not be AWD, Toyota didn't make the new platform to abandon it so quickly. All their North America trucks will share the new platform that the Tundra is now built on. Obviously smaller for the new Tacoma and new 4Runner. There are many people with a lot more knowledge out there, closely associated with Toyota, that expect the new 4Runner, whether it is a 2024 or 2025, to have a frame, proper 4x4 and updated powertrain.
I remember when you could get a Limited for $50k new....that wasn't 10 years ago, just a few years ago now sticker is $66k. They finally have heated steering wheels and 360 camera
Just watched your awesome video and had some questions. We just purchased the 2023 TRD Off Road Premium and want to use it to pull our little RV and Yamaha AR195. We’ve been using our 2006 Highlander and a few times pulling boat out at the ramp we get a little slip. With all our knowledge of 4WD vehicles, so you think we should put our new TRD in 4WD when pulling boat out, or do you think we will be fine just in 2WD? My concern is, once we are down the ramp, hooked up I don’t think we could get the vehicle in 4WD because it will naturally pull us backwards. Maybe since this is so much more of a vehicle we might never need to put in in 4WD. Your thoughts?
Traction control usually takes care of slip when in 2wd. If your on a slippery algae laden ramp at low tide it’s fine to use 4WD going “straight”. Good luck you’ll be fine with the 4runner!
Looking to replace my 2014 Outback with 214,000 miles. I like everything about the 4runner except the engine and gas mileage. Reminds me of why I did not replace my 2004 NissanTitan with another Titan.
I just wish they would get a more reliable set of coil overs and shocks. I finally got rid of my Heep of a Jeep after two years but I have had three of the four fox shocks replaced on the four runner within 10k miles of ownership. Besides that, I do enjoy it a lot more and not having a radio that shorts out like the Heep is a wonderful feeling.
I bet saw you at Costco gas station in Issaquah recently on this car :) I’m waiting for my 2023 4Runner for few months already and when I saw a new pro color, I told my wife: I wonder, how this guy bought it? Ah, wait, it seems to be Ryan from TH-cam channel my daughter and I like to watch! Will see if there is a new video in few days with this 4Runner. So, that’s how he got the car :)
Not me as I haven’t been to that station in about a decade. But probably the same vehicle. It gets circulated around the region to writers and producers.
This is one sexy ass car! Great content as always. Trying my absolute hardest to find a dealer that will do MSRP on one of these in Orange as it will be our next family National Park road trip car.
There’s a reason why Toyota hasn’t added a front locker, even on the toughest 4wd the landcruiser doesn’t have it at least the US version. With atrac you can still turn the front wheels no problem.
Those new power distribution systems can help in a pinch, but people have no idea how much wear and tear on their brakes it does. Then they get a vibration in their brake pedal and wonder where it originated. Automatic cruise is the same way. However, it is excellent for dealerships who love to replace brake pads for high-profit margins. Lockers are expensive. Brakes can generate more revenue. That is why they use them.
I like the fact that you didn't edit all the failed attempts up the hill, helps me see and learn from what you have done differently on each attempt. Great video!

You can turn on the first setting of MTS in 4-hi. I think its the mud/sand mode. Everything else requires 4lo.
I never understood the settings. Thank you, and what a fun job!
Two of my favorite things.. Well Okay 3, if you count Snow lol 1) Ryan/Driving sports TV 2) The mighty 4Runner 3) Snow
Awesome video, Ryan..
There's a thought.
enjoyed really enjoyable. No more words. Yota bravo!!! thanks for your driving sport!
This was a very good video. Loved thst you went through all the options available for the different situations
with BFGoodrich K02 tires, which are snow-rated, it all would have been far less challenging. I have them on my own 4Runner and are impressive.
Nice job.
I like this video. I'm buying one this fall. And getting my son a Tacoma. These are the trucks to get!
How would a 2023 4Runner Limited compare to the TRD Pro for off roading - IF you needed to take it off road???? I will be buying a 2023 Limited in a few days and even though I don't plan to take it off road, I am interested in knowing how capable it will be if needed.
I'm almost positive you can use the 1st option on MTS while on 4h. Thanks for the video!
Those tires were not meant for that. Thats for sure. Great video. Great fun!!
Thanks for the video yours are always short and sweet ... appreciate it
Really making me look forward to the next gen 4Runner.
Same! I really hope they give it better off-road chops to compete more with the Bronco. I would love to be able to fit 35-in tires on one without a crazy amount of work.
Keep dreaming probably be worse than the 5th gen
@@trailrunnah8886saying “better off road chops” about a 4 Runner is a crazy Statement…It’s one of the best off road vehicles ever produced and exponentially more reliable than a Bronco…..
Now I need to know if the Tremor can make it up that incline with the snow on it.
Great video! Your explanations are extremely helpful.
That is an awesome Toy! Love that color! Thanks Ryan 😊
It would be exciting to test the 4x4 SR5 against its capable siblings. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
Great video! Are the tires stock size (265/70r17)?
This is such an excellent beginner vehicle for those new to offroading
Good one...Now, would be interesting if you do a Jeep Wrangler under the same conditions (without and with lockers)
I *really * can't believe any modern cars still come with a 5 speed auto. The first 5 speed auto came out 31 years ago!
Considering it lasts half a million miles without issues, I’d say keep it.
Modern cars aren't lasting 10 years like vehicles from 31 years ago now are they?
Omg I love that colour 🤤
Most reliable Offroad rig on market
Really good video.
Just what I needed tj get through my bio break at work. Love the 4Runner and absolutely your videos. You are doing Buddha's work, sir! Cheers!
Do you miss your ORP??
Hey, your van is cool. Does ford transit AWD has different locker?
Great video, I wonder if the 2024 model will be a turbo?
Мужик, ты молодец. Подарил эмоции. 🤝
Так и не понял, он блокировал задний мост или нет?!
@@Алекс-г2щ насколько я понял, нет
I bet saw you at Costco gas station in Issaquah recently on this car :)
I’m waiting for my 2023 4Runner for few months already and when I saw a new pro color, I told my wife: I wonder, how this guy bought it? Ah, wait, it seems to be Ryan from TH-cam channel my daughter and I like to watch! Will see if there is a new video in few days with this 4Runner. So, that’s how he got the car :)
Not me as I haven’t been to that station in about a decade. But probably the same vehicle. It gets circulated around the region to writers and producers.
Awesome video man!! Next vehicle to take on your course is gonna be a Power Wagon right? 🤔
Hi there, thanks for the video, You owned an off road ready 4Runner why did you sell it? Just curious thanks
Thanks for the videos love the 4runner solar octane
2023 4Runner’s looks kill!
If Toyota could make something like the Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco, my money will fly to them ASAP
Why didn't you use rear locking differential on the hill climb? It would have made it easier.
This is one sexy ass car! Great content as always. Trying my absolute hardest to find a dealer that will do MSRP on one of these in Orange as it will be our next family National Park road trip car.
When 4Runners are off road they always look like they belong. It’s so satisfying to see.
Excellent video and very true about the 4Runner it’s excellent vehicle.
Waiting for the redesign of the 4 runner in 2024. Definitely looking forward to getting to the new version.
Still not sure there is conformation that is going to happen
Love your Off-Road tests!
The 5th gen is still capable as ever but I'm still hoping for a true front locker with the 6th gen!
does new Cruiser have one?
@@MyAlexWest The global J300 Land Cruiser in GR Sport trim has a front locker.
The USDM LX600 does not unfortunately.
I mean With the rear locker engaged in low range you can use atrac or Crawl control And it really does get the job done and it works really good
There’s a reason why Toyota hasn’t added a front locker, even on the toughest 4wd the landcruiser doesn’t have it at least the US version. With atrac you can still turn the front wheels no problem.
@@fouUili684 yeah ihave had good luck with a track and the rear locker
May be its me, I love the old A-trac more than MTS.
I'm a sucker for all the 4runner videos. How many have you done?
Lots! But that’s it for the year. 😭 (Sequoia is coming up tho!)
