Antique Pepper Grinder Restoration | Mister Patina
In this Video im restoring an antique pepper grinder, which was given to me by my friend Awat. I couldn’t find any brands, so I have no clue where it is from - nor how old it is. But that doesn’t matter - this beauty deserves a nice makeover!
I started with disassembling the pepper grinder, some screws were very rusty and stuck, but the rest was really easygoing. While disassembling I could find a lot of rust on the pepper grinder, which couldn’t be restored. So I had to make them new later. The next thing on the pepper grinder restoration was to care for the wooden body. It was in a good condition, so I put it on the lathe mill and sanded it from 80-400 grit and milled it perfectly round again. After that I gave it a nice paintjob.
Next step was restoring the rusted grinding wheels, I put them both in the lathe mill for milling the surfaces even again and gave them a nice wirebrushing and sanding to make them shiny and look like new.
The upper plate of the pepper grinder was so rusty, that I had to make a new one. I made a template on a new piece of metal, cut it roughly in shape and put it on the lathe mill. After milling this piece in perfect shape, I drilled new wholes on the der drill and milled them up a little bit. Last step was sanding and filing.
After that I took care of restoring the small parts of this pepper mill. Some of them got a nice filing, some of them got sanded on the lathe mill for perfect round shape. All parts were ready for polishing now, instead of one part which got blued with fire and oil. The rest of the parts of this antique pepper mill got polished with a nice compound.
The last step on this rusty restoration was to reassemble the pepper mill. I had to press some parts together, the rest was pretty easygoing. The final test of this pepper grinder shows, that it works perfectly fine. It grinds the pepper in fine granules.
Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed, you can hit the like, leave a comment and subscribe. That supports me and my channel for further projects.

I seem to recall elderly relatives who owned a set consisting of a very similar pepper grid and a salt grid. They sat in a metal tray to catch droppings. To grind you want to grasp the grind in your full hand like a fist and then crank. Very satisfying to use the set. Your restoration was excellent.

Very, very nicely done! This one turned out great! I'd like to think of this grinder as a mobile room clearing apparatus of sorts - Feeling antisocial? Want people to get away from you and leave you alone? Briefly turn the other way, quickly grind up some pepper, huff it, let out a monumental sneeze or two and watch as the vacuum salesperson turns 'round and mach 5's it outta dodge. I feel like I just wrote a summary for an upcoming infomercial 😆

Another excellent restoration - thank you! But one question - did you replace the filler guard backwards? It looked like in the unrestored, it slid to the left to right to open which prevented accidentally opening in when you were using the grinder in a clockwise motion. The restored version looked to slide right to left to open. Was this intentional?

    • @misterpatina
      @misterpatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You, sir, got the eyes of an eagle :-) The brass plate, which slides, was in a bad condition on the upper side. The other side was in a way better condition, so I pressed out the very small handle and just flipped the brass plate, pressed the handle back on the good condition side and reassembled it that way, which changes the direction of opening and closing.
These are just some small operations I don’t put in the video, because the video footage wasn’t that good. I hope you understand :)

I'm finally caught up to current! Another lovely piece, and you seem to be enjoying the new lathe. Did you find that there was a heavy learning curve working with it? Your video makes it seem like it's a fairly intuitive piece of equipment, and I am most curious to work with one myself.

Hey James! I love the lathe! For me it’s such a essential piece of equipment, when i think about how hard it was to get some processes done without a lathe, and how bad the quality of the final result was AND the time I needed more for the bad quality result processes...
Like you said, it’s fairly intuitive. You got to know some things, like rpm or the correct height of your lathe chisel AND taking the key out of the chuck before turning it on (!!!!). But I think if you got the spirit for working with machines and stuff, you’ll learn pretty fast. I can highly recommend working with it, but please make sure you got your protection equipment and watch some „lathe milling for beginners“ videos on TH-cam! 🙂

Hey dude... I have come up in the comments section if your videos a fair bit and I would just like to say you are absolutely amazing. I would just like to ask where you buy/find these *amazing* things to restore? eBay, Garage sales? You inspired me to start my own channel and I think you show how good someone can be at something with limited tools
(Edit) I as a machinist would like to point out that those parts you turned on the lathe have been hardened and so are sparking. That is bad for small machines and the best thing to do is to anneal the part to soften it

Hey Bro! Thank you so much for your kind words, i really appreciate! Most of the things i find on eBay oder eBay Kleinanzeigen (some sort of craigslist), on fleamarkets, or, in this case, from a subscriber :-)
I'll definetely check out your channel! Thank you so much!
Yeah, all my blades are unsharpened now, i learned a lot with this tool. But thanks for your tip :-)

I wouldn’t say he has limited tools. Far from it. Without all the expensive machine tools, sandblaster, welding equipment many of these these restorations would be impossible.

@@ex-scientia4234 You are right, but if you look at my mechinics for example, he has heat treating ovens, specialty bits, crazy collections of punches and dies, and all sorts of stuff people like us would only dream of.

I have a pepper grinder exactly like that one. Fortunate it's not in as bad of shape as yours was before you restored it. Now I know how to fix it if it needs it. Thanks.
