1933 French Hand Cranked Grinder - Restoration

- Restoring an old french hand cranked grinder from Val D'or , very possibly dating from 1933.
As the title suggests, I restored this wonderful and complex tool. My dear friend from OTND Restoration channel sent me.
I started the restoration, by disassembly, as usual. As I have seen in other restorations of the same tool, I expected the sprockets to be simple, attached only to the holes in the gearbox. I was very surprised when I opened the gearbox and saw that it also had ball bearings. That was the moment when I realized that this restoration is a bit more complex, but at the same time even more satisfying. This restoration video is a little longer than I usually do, but I did it to make the work satisfying for you. Apart from asmr restoration, you will see many things restored using hands, others being restored with the help of the lathe. You will also see sandblasting, powder coating, making new parts on the lathe machine , diamond dressing grinding wheel , making new parts on the milling machine and etching brass for making a new name plate for this beautiful tool.
I worked with pleasure as I do every time, and this will be seen in the video. I hope you enjoy both , video editing and restoration.
I also want to thank you for your patience in waiting for my videos and thank you for giving me love in your comments. Cheers , David !

I just wanted to stay thank you for your videos. I have anxiety that gets worst before falling asleep or even, like now, middle of the night, I wake up, my brain goes haywire, and I found that watching your videos calms me down. I don't worry, I don't stress as much. I just enjoy the process. So thank you
Glad you enjoy my videos. Be well Sara 😊
To think that it is still functional even before being restored. This is what I call quality. Quality products last a lifetime.
True 👌
Agreed
This video is very satisfying. I'm waiting for your opinions in the comments and I will answer you all ! Cheers !!
Amazing work as usual. You sir, are a pro.
Where do you even get all this old stuff, do you get it from junkyard or do you buy it ?
Some I bought , some I found . In this case I bought it from France and OTND sent it to me.
I think you're going to sleep on the sofa again. 😉
🤣🤣
My dad had a rusty grinder almost like this. Would send hours as a kid in his workshop sharpening anything I could get my hands on. Really brings back memories. Now it lies hidden away in a cupboard... Would love to restore it one day and display it with pride in my workshop. Thank you for the video! Your work is amazing.
Thank you very much and glad you liked it Mawio 😊
one of the coolest restorations. I kept whispering "that's so cool" many times as I watched. So clean and perfect!
Thank you very much for that 😊
This is more than just a restoration, this is turning an everyday object into a piece of art.
Thanks Mark 😊
Answers the question of "how did this thing looked and worked when it was new". Some stuff from about 100 years ago was pretty complex technology. Hand cranked and otherwise human powered machines tend to be quite interesting.

This is the best Restoration Channel on TH-cam. Thank you for your videos.
Thanks for not showing us your pets, not doing "magic tricks", not taking a break to drink something, actually restoring the object, and more.
Your channel should be called Better Than New Restoration, because that's what you really do. I cannot praise your work enough. Please do not change.
Thanks Scott and glad you liked it so much 😊 I try my best every time and I hope to not disappoint
This is fantastic, also I really appreciated the editing that went into this where you reassembled the mechanism and housing before going back to the wheel, absolutely brilliant as always!
Thank you very much and glad you liked it 😊
You promised an exceptional resto and you sure delivered an exceptional resto. Very well done once again.
Thank you very much mate 😊👍🏻
Dang. And here I was feeling proud of myself replacing the spray thing in my sink. Now I just feel outdone.
In all seriousness, this looks gorgeous! Wonderful job as always.
Thank you very much Pengun 😊
Love watching your restorations! No BS chattering or annoying music. Just the sounds of tools! This grinder came out beautifully!
Thanks a lot again 😊
Wow, now this is a work of art. I have such a soft spot for analog tools, and to have this in my workshop would be a dream. Masterfully done!
Thank you very much Georgia 😊 yeah , is a unique item and works like a charm 👌 glad you liked it
So is it a 1933 grinder, or a 1950 grinder
I love every single video you post-- satisfying or not just the fact that you know how to restore literally ANYTHING and know how all the vintage things work. truly fascinating!
Thank you very much Samantha 😊
You are a braver man than me, dressing the wheel on your lathe. 😃
Morning coffee and restoration videos...the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast
Thanks and glad you enjoy my videos 😊
The restored version looks absolutely splendid! I appreciate your hard work on restoring these items!
Thank you very much 😊
I love your content. It's always relaxing and inspiring. 🥰🥰🥰
The lathe machine working is the most satisfying part.
Indeed 👌
Man ! Another 2hrs relaxing to watch your craft!
Absolutely SUPERIOR restoration. Simply outstanding!. It works perfectly and is incredible! Looks too good to use. BRAVO.
Thank you very much Prof J 😊
Your resto's keep amazing me! The amount of skills, and level of proficiency you posess, is incredible. I love seeing the different approaches between you and your restoration "colleagues" here on youtube - The slight differences are interesting, especially seeing how you all end up with amazing results.
Another factor I love, is seeing all the different kinds of old equipment; Items that aren't made anymore, not to mention the rugged quality of stuff made to last, compared to our modern plastic equivalents, is really cool.
Can't wait to see all the projects you have to share in the future! Thank you, and good luck in the next ones!
Thank you very much buddy ! You are so kind saying that. Thanks again 😊
MAN. The roller press . How cool. Love the right tools 🛠️
Thank a lot Ralph and glad you enjoyed 😊
Powder coating is the absolute best way to paint. You did amazing
Yeah , it is! Thanks a lot Tonia 😊
It was so complex that at times I wasn't able to keep track what was happening. And that is a GOOD thing!
Awesome restoration, as always 👍
Thank you very much Arnav 😊
Another perfect restoration. Thank you for sharing it. Keep up the fantastic work.
Thank you very much 😊
If every thing created like this, nothing will end in dustbin
Thank you for your hard work, brilliant and always satistifying
Thanks and glad you liked it so much 😊
Have been watching through your restorations from the oldest to the newest. This so far has been the best you have done. The result was fantastic. That grinder is now a thing of beauty. Well done.

You are by far the best restorer I’ve seen. There is nothing you can’t recreate from scratch. Incredible skills. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Thank you very much Matthew 😊
I can imagine people restauring your machines you used to restore other machines with advanced machines.
Well this grinder is definitely cool again! 😄 fantastic job mate, this is one of my favorite restoration videos and it was definitely worth the wait!
You make every step look so easy, so enjoyable to watch you bring things back to life.

Well this is a premium restoration! I didn't realize when 24 minutes had passed!
Thanks buddy
I love the way you restore items and how you have all or enough machinery to make and restore parts properally
Thanks a lot for being here every time 🤗 cheers
Amazing job buddy, especially on label production. How long has it been soaked in a ferric chloride bath?
Thanks Radek! It was soaked in chloride about 30 minutes but depend how deep you want the etching and depend what temperature it is the chloride solution. I preheated mine at 40 degree
@@CoolAgainRestoration Thanks for the info David , I always wanted to try it :)
Outstanding work! Really the care for the tiniest details is sooo awesome! :D
And always carefully dodging the reflections XD
Thank you very much. In next video I think I will reveal my face 🤣
Really appreciable! I wonder whether this hand grinder would have looked as new when sold first as it does now! Hats off to the restorer!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊
The "juice for my wife" killed me. I'm dead now.
I don’t reply to dead man 🤣
Beautiful outcome! 😍 Love it!
Thanks 😊
Thank you for giving life to this 89 year old bed ridden hand cranked grinder. You gave this grinder a chance. You made it look like it came straight out of the factory fresh out of the oven. Keep on grinding @Cool Again Restoration, lol. This is a message from a fellow subscriber.
Thank you very much my dear subscriber 😊 cheers 🍻
Such amazing restoration. 👍👍
Thank you very much 👍
So good. I watch these videos in bed at night. They help me put the day away.
Glad you enjoy them 😊
👍 сейчас будем посмотреть
I said it before, you are one of a kind, your restoration's are beyond my imagination.
Keep up the good work, well done friend!
Thank you very much Mustafa 😊👌
This parts are felling as a day at the spa when restored by you. All oiled in all the spots and sand masaged. A real treatment
True 😃😃 I want this treatment too 😅 lol
I appreciate your surfacing work. Lots of softened edges is great for hand tools.
Thanks Scott 😊
Question.... when you use the lathe and take a little off a part, does this not make a difference when if goes back together?
Had a hard time enjoying the rest of video after watching this. Should have spray welded it to build up metal. Then turned it down to right size. Just because it looks good does not mean it was done right. I am being very critical but this is what they do for a job.
Hi @I’m right you’re wrong! Normally yes but depend where that part goes after. In my case, that parts was not damaged if I take it a little of material. I read it what Jamed wrote and he has right. But not in this case. Where needed to remove some material ( I removed to the gear where the handle is attached) for making it smaller and to can add a bush after. I attached the bush to the handle and after that they fit perfectly.
@@CoolAgainRestoration thanks 👍🏼
@@CoolAgainRestoration I'm going to say BS you removed material off the shaft on the first gear which made it smaller It is now not going to fit as intended by the manufacturer You're just playing wrong admit it yeah you have nice tools but you certainly don't know what you're doing when it comes to machining or at least you don't know about allowable tolerances I don't know maybe they do something different on the other side of the world but I've been machining parts for over 30 years in states and not how it works here if you do something like that here it's called a Chicago rebuild maybe you should have just painted the damn thing and sent it on its way would have been tighter.
@@whatdoyouthinktodd I mean he did just explain that he added a bushing to make up for the lost material but reading comprehension doesnt seem to be your strong suit lol
wonderful restoration! the handle crank looks like it was cast, I've heard that cast iron needs to be pre-heated before it can be safely welded, does this matter for a small object like this where the entire section is heated by the welding or did you pre heat it off screen? I really like that you added a brass core so that you didn't have to remake the wooden handle.
It was hand forged 👍🏻
Hi mister brilliant restoration i very much liked the restoration good job well done friend
Thanks Vince 😊👍🏻
was going to eat my lunch alone a work. saw there's a new video of cool again.
you just made my day significantly brighter
Glad you liked it buddy. Thank you very much 😊
Enjoyed every part till you had the juice for your wife that was acid. Admittedly a joke for you, but personally I never make my wife look anything but loved to anyone, no matter how “funny” it might look at first.
Hi Bob and glad you liked it. 5 minutes ago I talked on what’s app with a subscriber from 🇺🇸 USA . He told me about that sentence . He was grow up in Europe and now he live in USA and told me there is not the same sense of humour like here. I don’t say there is bad and here is good. Just is different. No offence to any wife or women, I love my wife and 5 months ago she gave me a beautiful daughter but here we can make jokes about us.
@@CoolAgainRestoration Congratulations on becoming a Dad! Agree that humor is different from place to place. Looking at how things start, such as why the married man cheated on his wife, or say how did the once loving marriage fail, it seems that it didn’t just happen suddenly but came about over time, lots of small things, little things that didn’t seem to matter. That’s why I made the comment.
All the best,Bob
Cheers Bob 👍🏻
Honestly I wouldn’t have restored it this good! Like you are honestly so good it takes away from the patina of the piece!! You are too good at what you do😂😂
Thanks a lot 😊
Perfect work!
Thank you very much Sergey 😊
That was amazing, I love just laying in bed and watching these satisfying videos of yours.

Thank you very much George 😊
Very very nicely done and very therapeutic to watch. I LOVE the no talking and zero music. Makes it very enjoyable.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
Talk about precise measurements! Dude Added more steel/metal to that crank handle!! SKILLL!! Just slid in without a hassle with that clamp.
So happy I found your channel
Glad to hear that 😊
Your skill and patience are inspiring. I'm new to your channel but I am enjoying your work so much. Watching you save something that would otherwise be trashed because it is old is a balm for my soul.
Thanks again 😊
Amazing as usual 👏👏👏
Thank you very much Barbara 😊🤗

The Lathe, is always a mesmerizing Thing to Watch...1️⃣🔧🥹
Wow, so much better than how it came from the factory! The time and attention you give to every detail, is amazing. And so is your knowledge about restoration. Looking foreward to more video's!
Thanks a lot Willem 😊
Really like that you don't resort to deliberately damaging a project by immersing it in moisture, of whatever source. You take what you find and make it better. Your attention to detail shines through, as usual. Well done Sir 👏
Thanks for these kind words 😊
I am sincerely impressed with the results of your work. Your attention to detail is phenomenal.
Thank you very much Terry 😊
Great job bringing this back to life!!
