I just had my first interview. It was a 20 minute introductory call with a recruiter for an entry level electrical engineering position. She asked me to tell her about my college and internship experience and then asked why Tesla. The rest of the time was reserved for my questions and for her to go over the position. Next step is a technical exam, an interview with an engineer on the team I would be on, and then a panel of engineers.

Hey Ben, good video! Figured I'd contribute in return.
Did my first interview a few days back and was only asked "Why Tesla?". I should say though that this one was only with HR.
I'm slated to do 2 more interviews, the final one being a panel interview with a team of 6 engineers who will interview me 1 on 1 (so in actuality, its actually 6 interviews rolled into 1) so some of those other questions may come up then!

I had an interview today, but it was for an internship. Actually got none of the questions that where in here. I was just first asked to present myself and give a personal profile, and give some examples on projects that I have done. After it, I was asked a lot of different technical questions regarding engendering topics of my career. Do note, I was contacted directly by a Sr. Engineer, so it actually doesn’t surprise me the interview went in that way. I will have a resolution two weeks from now. Wish me luck guys!

Same situation for me today. Also for an Intern Engineering position and directly with a Sr. Staff Eng. The only broad question I was asked was "why tesla?". I was actually hoping to be asked that because I had a lot to elaborate about it. But then the rest of the interview was totally technical, and that was like 90% of the 50 minutes conversation. Not very difficult, questions were about fundamentals, however, you need to show a clear comprehension of the subject. I got some answers right but also had a hard time in others. I'm currently waiting for their feedback. Wish me luck!

I feel like in response to the boat in a tank with an anchor a way to demonstrate critical thinking would be to ask if the water was at the top of the tank when the anchor was thrown. As if the water is already filled to the top of the tank and you throw the anchor water will go up and out of the tank and overall the water level would lower. Just a thought.

When the anchor is thrown over board, the boat will be less heavy, float higher, and displace less water (exactly equal to the anchors WEIGHT in water). When the anchor sinks into the water, it will displace exactly the anchors VOLUME in water.
Because the anchor is denser than water, it was displacing more water when it was floating in the boat than when it was thrown in the ocean. Thus the water level will lower when the anchor is thrown in.

The answer to the boat and anchor questions is wrong. The water level will reduce. Sure, there will be an additional volume of the anchor added to the water, but since the weight of the boat is reduced it will rise up, meaning less of the boat is below water, causing the water level to go down. The effective density of the boat is the mass of the boat + the anchor divided by the volume of displaced water. Removing the anchor will drastically change the density of the boat, causing more volume of the boat raising out of the water than the volume of the anchor. The reason is because the anchor is more dense than the water (because it sinks), so the additional volume of water displaced by the anchor is than the volume of the anchor. I've realised I need to work for Tesla lol

The anchor in the rowboat question does not make sense to me. if you had a marble that weighed 100lbs, surely it being in the boat would displace more water then the amount displaced by its volume. I think the answer would depend on the mass and volume of the object be tossed overboard.

The water level will fall and here's why. When the anchor is in the boat it is displacing it's weight worth of water. That weight worth of water is less dense than the anchor and therefore takes up more volume than the anchor. If you trade displaced water volume with the lesser displaced anchor volume by throwing the anchor overboard then the water level will fall.

    Grand Rising Ben,
First, you are amazing, I love to hear you talk and watching your videos helped me to get excited to interview again 😊. So I came across your videos when I got an email from tesla on the 19th of August. Today is the 3rd of September and so far I have had 3 interviews with them as of yesterday.
The questions I was asked were pretty standard questions On the first and second interview both people asked me about my background and told me to tell them about myself and ways that I worked through pressure. Basically, they wanted me to elaborate about hard situations i experienced at work with customers and how i worked through them and turned it around. On the second interview the manager asked me to explain how I would work through a chaotic situation. This leaves the third interview. During this one, she first told me she was an operations manager and explained to me a little bit about the work dynamic at the location I would be working at. She then opened the floor in the beginning of the interview for me to ask questions. She asked me what was a situation where I had difficulty at work. She also asked me why did I want to be a part of Tesla. Then she asked me a question that she says she always asks her interview prospects at the end and the question was "WOULD YOU RATHER DO A JOB AND MEET ITS TIMELY DEADLINE OR WOULD YOU RATHER DO A JOB CORRECTLY?" AND YOU CAN ONLY CHOOSE 1.
I feel that I was always good at interviewing I am a performer and singer naturally but it's been a year-and-a-half since I've interviewed for a job and I felt a little rusty. Your interview tactics, insight and expertise have really boosted up my confidence and although most of the questions weren't in my interview I still Incorporated a lot of some of the things that you helped me to brainstorm about into the questions that they asked and that ultimately got me another interview each time.
So now I'm waiting for them to either tell me if I have another interview or if I got the job. I'm pretty sure I aced it. Each interaction was awesome and I felt confident with how I did! Thanks bro 🙏 🙌 💯 💙 💪 👌 🙏

I enjoyed the video very much!
I learned from it and what to expect. I searched that question because your answer didn't seem to make sense to me.
I was actually on a submarine in the United States Navy for two years stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.
The sub I was on went to the Mediterranean for 6 months.
So I've learned a little bit about displacement. 🙂
Look it up you'll see that they explain the water will go down because let's say the anchor (while in the boat) displaces the equivalent of 100 l of water. 1 l equals one kilogram. But then when you throw it in the the tank, the volume only displaces 10 l. So then the volume would drop by 90 l in the tank.
It has to do with the density of water.
So whatever is denser than water would cause the tank level to go down but whatever is lighter than water would cause the level to go up.
So if you were holding 10 lb of wood and then made it go inside the tank below water, then the volume displaced would weigh more than the water, because of wood is lighter than water. So the level would go up.

It’s a good question Nick. Saying I’ve seen a lot of people like you is kind of a funny thing to say. It’s like, duh, of course you have. You posted a job with requirements so of course you are seeing people with similar skills and backgrounds. I probably wouldn’t address it honestly. But I would ask them good questions at the end of the interview. I might say something like, I imagine you do, this is a very intriguing role for a person with my background. In your experience, what separates the candidates that candidates that were good from the ones who were great.

Well it’s tough without internship experience because of how competitive it is but perhaps an entry level role if the person has a strong GPA from a good school.

14:58 - The answer is actually dependent on 3 things: The surface area of the row boat's hull, the weight of the anchor, and the physical size of the anchor.
If the anchor was tiny, but dense and extremely heavy, the hull of the boat would sink deeper into the water, displacing more of it than if the anchor were thrown overboard. If the anchor was extremely large, but weighed very little, it would sink the hull into the water less, and displace more water after being thrown overboard. The size of the boat could effect the answer to the question though, in any case.

Hi Ben, first of all, thank you for your amazing insights into the questions. However, I'd like to point out that you gave a flawed answer to one of the questions you mentioned, which was the boat floating in a tank problem. In that scenario, the level of water would drop when you dropped the anchor into the water because the amount of water displaced by the anchor no longer equaled the weight of the anchor. When the anchor was on the boat, the boat displaced the amount of water that equaled the weight of the anchor so that all 3 objects remained floating, but when the anchor sank to the bottom, the water volume displaced by the anchor became only the volume of anchor, which was definitely smaller than the volume of water with the same weight as the anchor, since the density of anchor is way larger than the water. Also, a "yes" or a "no" would not be a proper answer to that question as it wasn't a "yes" or "no" problem to begin with. Otherwise, great video!
