  • Elon Musk has built two of the most sought-after employment destinations in the world in SpaceX and Tesla. In this video, I am going to share with you SpaceX Interview Tips as well as confirmed SpaceX interview questions in order to show you how to land a job with SpaceX!
In this video, I cover 5 critical things to succeeding in an interview with SpaceX! I cover the overall culture and mission, and how you should incorporate that into your answers as a candidate. I discuss an actual Elon Musk interview question that is asked by him and senior leaders at SpaceX and Tesla, and teach you the key to answering it, I go over an actual story of a technical fit who didn't get a job after interviewing with SpaceX and what he did wrong so you don't make the same mistakes, I go through confirmed Recruiter/HR questions you can expect to be asked and how you can answer them and finally I give you a list of the technical questions that are asked at SpaceX so you can go into your interview prepared to answer them.
One of the things I have often stressed in my videos is that in a job interview process, there is often a slim margin for error. With SpaceX, this is absolutely the case. They have tons of super-smart, qualified applicants and if you want to land a job with SpaceX, you have to be prepared!
Check out these SpaceX Technical Job Interview Questions

Some years ago I was very interested and researched quite bit into rocket propulsion ,nozzle design, film cooling, and aerodynamics and even aeroelasticity. I also had a interests in large module manufacturing. Unable to move due to children growing up to areas where I could bring my interests , i no longer have that restriction now. So, i may try to give it a go.
One thing i noticed here is no one trying to answer any of the posed questions Most of the time on LinkedIn there would be questions with always an answer given. Quora is the same thing. For a majority of questions I would throw in my 2 cents worth.
Without looking anything up i answer some of the following questions.
    1. What are composites? composites are a way of using lighter materials, applied in novel ways as to enhance the structural integrity while also decreasing weight.
    2. If you have a large, heavy object moving very, very fast, how do you safely slow it down? It seems that with large objects soft surfaces, or softer matter do the best job. Case in point. An airplane over extends it's landing. At the end of runways of major airports are soft concrete that increases drag ten fold. In the air, it would be aerobraking. As rockets descend into the more dense part of the atmosphere, one can see the dramatic decrease in speed before rockets are fired. Aerobraking Is used for satellites entering say the Martian atmosphere before parachute are used. The too fast initial speeds would rip the cords or destroy the parachute material. So, atmosphere is the best IMHO.
    3. How would you go about a design for an electrical harness to protect it from a sharp object falling from above?
Wrap the harness in metal braiding and attach next to either a flat surface, or underneath a supporting bracket. Leaving an electrical harness to hang in the open may accidently catch the object. If the object doesn't cut the harness, it may at least pull the electrical connectors from their sockets. And considering the amount of acceleration a rocket undergos, this is serious business.
    4. What happens when you run a high current (spot welding) through a nickel piece touching a copper piece? Not a welder, though do have some interest and it lies with automated welding equipment such using robots. I would think that too much current would cause splattering of the copper metal. Copper is softer material, more conductive. and being more conductive means it has a higher thermal conductivity. (It has to do with free electrons. More free electrons means higher conductivity)
    5. How do you regulate the temperature of something in space? What is your main limiting factor? As far as heat coming from the sun, rradiatorsI guess the main limiting factor is surface area.
If anyone wants to chime in and share their thoughts it would be appreciated. My answered were at the top of my head.

Great video! I am from the oil and gas field for 10 years and I have been interviewed probably 12 times with SpaceX and 3x with Blue Origin over the past year and these questions are all in line to what they typically ask .. the recruiter questions are simple and they are so nice ( they literally come to you and tell you “I saw you applied for this position but I think you would be a better fit for this one “) but the hiring manager is a matter of luck … gonna go for the third time to Hawthorne tomorrow for the 3h in person presentation panel … #nevergiveup

Your interview tips really helped! This is definitely a long process, 2 months so far. I have had 3 phone interviews with various managers, engineers and technicians and a decent amount of paperwork. One thing is to be sure to compile a summary of your accomplishments and you must have a detailed summary. You will need them not only for your interview but for the Executive Summary of Accomplishments. There are 6 on the form but you need only 4, I provided all 6. I just had my first onsite interview and tour. The tour was awesome. I actually got to hold components that had been in space. I saw a Raptor engine up close! The people there are really positive and friendly. I was told that they only bring people onsite that they believe will be a fit. They just don't bring anyone in. Regardless if I get the job it was an awesome experience.

Good advice re: the executive summary. I just interviewed for a non-technical role at SpaceX, and they still wanted one from me as well. If you are interviewing at SpaceX, even if it's literally to be a barista, be prepared to write 2-3 paragraphs each about 4-6 of your greatest professional accomplishments. They will ask for this after the initial recruiter phone screen and before the more difficult/serious interviews with your hiring managers, and if there isn't much time between these two, you will have to produce some homework pretty fast.

@@BenTalksTalent Thanks for the encouragement! I think the interview went really well! It was my third interview and it was on-site in McGregor, TX for an entry level engineering position. I had a facility tour, a half hour presentation time, an hour interview with the team, and a half hour interview with someone in leadership. Your prep for the interview questions was very helpful! For the technical question, they ended up walking me through an exercise related to what they work on for about 15 minutes. We talked about how I’d engineer a device to address potential issues in different places. It was actually a doable line of questioning given my background!! I hope they will have me join the team. I typically don't leave comments, but I truly have to thank Ben and this amazing video for helping me land a position at SpaceX!! I just signed my offer letter yesterday, and the level of preparation was rooted in this video and many Glassdoor/Reddit insights regarding the interview process.
The 4 questions I was asked by the second round were 1) Tell me about a time you failed and what you learned from it 2) Tell me about a time you had to juggle many projects/deadlines 3) Tell me about a time you had to learn something new for the first time and 4) Tell me about a time you faced conflict at work and how you navigated the situation with your team.
At all stages of the screening, phone interviews, and on-site presentation/conversations, they're looking for quantifiable impact and as much detail as you can provide to ensure you were actively engaged and you're telling the truth. Good luck to folks applying! Even if I wasn't offered the role, I truly left each phone call and on-site interview thinking it was a really good learning experience with such a cool company.

These are answers from a physicist, though I am not a rocket scientist… yet. If you have a large heavy object moving very fast how do you safely slow it down: You need to know how much force your object can tolerate. For example, a human can take maybe 5Gs of force. You can apply up to that much force on the object. There are a few external factors that apply force, such as air resistance, gravity, friction, or another object pushing on it. Then, you have internally sourced ways to slow down. This is governed by conservation of momentum. Your object can throw some of its mass in the direction opposite to its acceleration and this will slow it’s velocity. (I.e. burning rocket fuel or jettisoning part of the system)
How do you regulate the temperature of something in space? What is your main limiting factor?
To regulate the temperature of something, you need to be able to transfer heat away from that object. Your limiting factor in space is the efficiency of radiative heat transfer. Specifically, that means that your heat loss is mostly through the emission of photons taking away heat because your object is not physically in contact with anything or transfer heat in that way. So, to regulate your temperature in space, you would want to maximize your radiative heat dissipation by using better materials for that purpose. You can also create an internal heat reservoir and put that into contact with whatever is generating the heat. The contact point needs to be a good heat conductor. Your reservoir could be water or a large piece of metal. To send it to space, you would want to pick the material that will be light in weight but hold a lot of heat.

Interviewed yesterday for a Logistics position. It was my 4th round of interviews and on this one they have asked a lot of the questions mentioned in the video. I was prepared and had everything written down, however, I felt like my interviewer was not very happy with my answer for "tell me a real example of you having a disagreement with your peer and how did you go about it?" I told the story about one project me and my peer wanted to handle in different ways and that at first we went the way I wanted (it was mainly my project) and then weeks later changed out strategy due what what we have been noticing going on with a market and our ability to complete a project as expected. So few weeks later we went the way my peer was suggesting and completed a project together helping each other out doing everything we can. However by follow up questions I felt like my interviewer was searching for something me to say which I was not saying....even tho I gave a real example and included disagreement, collaboration, result achieved, etc...
The other one was a little bumpy with "a story you failed". My interviewer said that it seemed like I didn't learn from it even tho I said thinks like "I needed to better assess the situation", "I needed to change the priorities given the situation/information available". I feel that I overexplained the action I have done and why I did it the way I did that it made my interviewer think that I still think I did it right...however, I insisted in the end that yes I think I could have acted differently yo prevent what happened by better situational awareness and priority change.
Hoping for the best, but so far no feedback from HR Team. Its been 24 hrs now. Will post back the final result.

Composites are a mixture of two or more materials with distinct properties on their own. These typically have higher strength to weight ratios, are much more expensive and complicated to manufacture/process, and worst thermal properties generally than metals (there are exceptions to all of these). Think of fiberglass, kevlar, carbon fiber, etc. although there are many new materials being developed every year so it is a rapidly evolving industry!

After they graduate they can get OPT (optional reactive training) which means they can live and work in the US. You get a certain amount of time and then you can get an extension. During that time, you find a company to provide sponsorship with the goal of them eventually helping you get your green card.

I think these are the answers to the following:
Size of an int on a 32 bit machine: this answer depends on the programming language but i venture to say that the context for spaceX is C or C++ the answer to this is at LEAST 2 bytes. It could be more but only lower bound is guarunteed.
Null pointer is a datatype of pointer that has value 0 reprezenting that it points to nothing.
Detect cycle in singly linked list: 2 pointers that traverse at different speeds or a hashmap auxiliary datastructure.
Why are there so many different data structures? They all have different properties time complexities and space requirements that make solving different problems possible, or more efficiently.
The rocket type questions i am curious about but dont have any answers for.

@@BenTalksTalent hi just a quick update. I had my first interview bassically a screening with the recruiter. I am a new computer science grad and SpaceX is the first company to respond to any of my applications. I worked full time in an IT role while going to school and this initial interview was all about my work experience with the question why do I want to work at SpaceX. They did not even question my software engineering skillset. They want to see passion for work and if there exists an intrinsic value to working. I was able to pass the initial screening. The next step would be the recruiter telling the hiring manager to review profile, resume, etc. At the point of my call the hiring manager had already reviewed my stuff and i am now schedule for interview number 2 with the hiring manager. I also received a coding assesment to to take. This video is very helpful.

When I will interview people for SpaceX, I will ask what is the aim of their life, does they afraid of death, will they move to Mars, because some people of the team will need to do it. I survived the biggest bulling this world will ever know, so I am learning each day and I think spaceX must be like family for each person, who goes to work for it. To gather the knowledge is not a problem, to be curious about your job is.

Unless someone has peer-reviewed research indicating otherwise, I seriously doubt these “cultural fit” questions have any ability to predict actual performance. There are like a billion variables in between that interview question and real-world performance that obfuscate how you answer the question. The “explain a time you solved a difficult problem” works because it’s a knowledge question, not a behavioral test. The behavioral test questions likely have no actual predictive power close to the mean. But employers still use them because they severely overestimate their ability to predict behavior.
