  • In today's video, I give you 35 things you should not say in a job interview. I identify big job interview mistakes to avoid based on my experience as both a recruiter and a hiring manager who has been involved in countless interviews over the years. While some of these seem more obvious than others, candidates make these mistakes every single day in job interviews and most do not know they are actually making a mistake. By learning these things you should not say in a job interview, you are positioning yourself to be successful and increasing the likelihood you land the job.

    It is super easy to work those filler words out of your vocabulary that I learned in a communications class I took years ago. The solution is simple if you feel like you are about to say a filler word decide to pause your speech in that moment instead and speak once you have your thoughts in order again start talking at that point without that filler word. We use filler words because we are afraid of a moment of silence and just be ok with that silence and all is well.

    I'll have to disagree with the not lying part. Like when they ask why you want that job, everyone there knows it's because of the money but if you say because of the money, you're automatically disqualified.

      Oh I agree there. You need to give them a compelling, non-monetary reason.

    7:28 Question: So if they ask if you have any questions at the beginning of the interview, should I say, “I have some questions, but I would like to defer them to later on”? That way, you can ensure you have time to answer their questions for you sufficiently.
    I had a recent interview where I made the strategic error of asking all of my questions up front. Then, when I was going through answering their questions - one of the panel members called me out, saying that we are halfway through the interview and I had only answered 3 questions and there are 5 more to go - plus some extra non-scored questions…
    At that moment, I knew the interview was over 😕

    Last year, I had an interview I was *really* looking forward to, and my dad (who was elderly and sick) called THREE TIMES (I had given my phone to my husband to look after). But dad needed to be transferred to the hospital, so it really was *that* urgent and he was blind and having trouble finding his doctor's number. Still so mortifying.

    If an interviewer asks if I’m considering any other offers at the moment so they know when they should get back to me, can I say “I am interviewing for other positions right now so I may have other offers to consider soon, but you can take your time getting back to me and I will evaluate each offer equally when making my decision”?

    You mentioned not asking things like, "how much longer" during the interview. Is it ok to a) ask how long to plan when scheduling the interview; and/or b) inform the interviewer that you have another commitment at a certain time (i.e. a "hard stop" time for the interview)?

  • @unappealingundesirable2826
    @unappealingundesirable2826 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    "Do you have any concerns about my ability to perform in this role?" So, that should be a question towards the END of the "question session," right? In fact, how damaging would it be, if one had about 10 decent questions, but this "concerns about my abilities" was their FIRST question?

    • @BenTalksTalent
      @BenTalksTalent  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love love love your videos. Been watching many and subscribed.
    In general I do interview well. Been told so by various employers and have often landed the jobs I went for.
    All your tips 100% spot on.
    Watching to refresh my skills and potentially new tips.
    Its important to stay up to date and fresh.
    What is your opinion of bringing a hand out.
    I have brought a little folder with a copy of my resume (most of the time they have a cooy), a list of reference and some examples of my work.
    What do you think about that?
    I don't always do it, but it has always started good conversations.
    Thanks for what you do. This is so helpful for so many people.
    All the best.
