      Some employers don't know what candidate they want. I knew an employer who chose a candidate who barely spoke English over another who had good English speaking skills. Doesn't make sense!

    Recruiters are human beings. Unconscious bias is always there. They actually determine in seconds that if they like you or not. The rest of the interview is just looking for justifications to confirm your bias.

    Whats messed up is we as human being are so dynamic. We may be good at our jobs but have introverted personalities which makes it so we can't get hired. So we follow these tips, get the job, then we become the exact person we acted like we weren't. People who are more outgoing and confident can manipulate the hiring manager but not be very good at their jobs. I guess fake it till you make it? Hiring managers should really just hire people and recognize that nobody is perfect, and if they are, they are lying to you and more than likely cannot be trusted.

      And the funniest part is that I always see introverted understanding and adapting to extroverts, but NEVER EVER the opposite. Not only they don't even do a slightly effort to understand introverts, they also consider themselves superior, while more than half of the society devices and applications they use everyday were only realized by introverts.

    I just started working at 16. I had two interviews. one for a grocery store and one for a small diner. both I got hired immediately. I told them I wanted to start working to start a nice resume. that I have no work experience but I'm willing to learn. and I guess they liked that lol!

    I’m on the verge to have an interview for supervisor position with Costco and your piece of advice is power . As you know , your videos have saved me from being homeless: I landed the job and I’m very grateful for the information you provide online . I need to grow and they know it . I make myself clear .     I had a few interviewers swearing and cussing during the interview for 30-45 minutes! Also, some using the words: bro, chief, boss, dawg, homie and g! lol!

      When I was looking for my first job in 1998, I was rejected due to my nature of naturally being a person who speaks proper and doesn't cuss or use slang. Up to now I have not changed much, and it has usually worked in my favor. However, I can never forget those (should I say "kids" since that is what I would have called them at that age today?) who passed on me because I didn't "fit in" and I came across like the proper nerd type who would be serious and expect things to be done, like a black Sheldon Cooper. Some people do not like a person who appears like they might be too professional because they want to be around people they think they can get away with stuff with. I might as well add this: I know many people use race as an excuse for "being held back" all the time, but you see that I am black with an actual African name and I have done well in all cases EXCEPT the one where I seemed or appeared to be "too good." So, regardless of your color, your DEMEANOR should outshine whatever preconceived notions people have. None of the people who I've interviewed with looked at me and saw me as a potential troublemaker or potentially violent when angry threat. They either saw me as a polite, professional and well-spoken clean cut guy, or someone to avoid because I "look like" I'm serious about things and wouldn't tolerate others goofing around, etc. Yes, looks can sometimes be deceiving, but notice that my race was never the final thing people judged on based on common stereotypes. Present yourself correctly and people will respect and consider you (in most cases), and that is even more true in many countries outside of western culture.

    The thing about not saying "I don't know" is one hundred percent true. Never show weakness like that. Instead, say something like "what are you, a f*cking dork-nerd?" or "who cares? I'm too busy getting laid all the time to worry about stupid bullsh*t like that" (this is one of those rare exceptions where cursing is not only OK, but important). That way, you're back to being the alpha sigma grind dog, you're in control, and the interviewer knows how badass you are. They'll probably forget they even asked the question.

    As a hiring manager i would much rather have an honest, "i don't know," than have a candidate make up an answer. I will eventually find out that they didn't know; at that point that person just lost my trust

      Only 1 person in this situation is allowed to be late and waste the other person's time. I say this with experience of sitting in benches and watching people who had an appointment before me get taken 20 minutes after I was supposed to start.

    Good video. I will admit that I talked badly about a former employer and that shut down my chance of landing the job. Luckily I was told this and learned it as a big lesson and I also give out this advice to others as well.

    The tip that I have an issue with is "don't ask what you do here" meaning you did not homework on the company vs "don't throw out a lot of acronyms" meaning the recruiter is clueless to the acronyms that may apply to the job in the industry that
    person is interviewing for.

    "Your skills are not what we're looking for" got that recently for an overnight stocking job at a local fred meyer. I have a lot of warehouse experience from loading, unloading, palletizing, de palletizing, stocking, dropping off pallets, collecting pallets and stacking. But my skills don't qualify for the job.

    I remember I myself made that last mistake in an interview with Genesee and Wyoming once. The question was where do I see myself in 5 years and instead of saying as a locomotive engineer with G&W, I accidentally slipped up and said that I would spend 5 years as a conductor/engineer with York Rail and later go to a class one like CSX down the line. Thankfully I starting tuning in to your channel and these videos after that letter of rejection, and since then I've landed on a few different railroads of the smaller variety, before the bigger one I now attend an information session with Thursday.

    I remember saying once "Is this job has promotional o escalated position" This literally killed my interview and about 10 minutes I got the rejection. Everything was going perfect, except for that.... So definitely something that I learned the hard way. Thanks for the content!

    I once saw an actual interview on TV where a girl had been shopping at Walmart before going to the interview. She put her shopping in the interview room near the door as she entered and proceeded to the desk to be interviewed, having sabotaged her prospects with the shopping. You can't go shopping on the way to an interview, at least you need to leave it in the car.

      That's silly. Why can't someone shop before an interview? I at least hope it wasn't a Walmart interview where she was rejected for shopping - AT Walmart. But then again, it's TV.
      But yes, if she has a car it would've been more appropriate that she left or had taken those things to the car first, assuming she was able to.
      And yes, I am a Walmart shopper, so if anyone wants to think negatively of me because of that, then they're ridiculous. Everyone has their beliefs, and I don't live according to other people's irrational beliefs (unless I'm getting paid to do it). I even had family members who held the "belief" that I should not walk around with a Walmart bag, and if I did, I should hide it by placing it in another bag from a "higher quality" store so people don't think I shop there. F that. I am not living my life fake to please society or satisfy anyone else's irrational beliefs. I might be fake for an interview if I'm in a position where I need money and someone is willing to pay me as long as I can act the way they wish until I don't need the money anymore, but not outside of that.
      If I don't get hired because I didn't hide the fact that I did some shopping, or because I like any particular store that the manager has irrational "beliefs" about, that's fine. I can get my money elsewhere. However, if I ever need to bring stuff with me to an interview, the least I will do is not look tacky while doing it. I do have to take some level of responsibility for how I look. I do not know what that TV person looked like when she arrived with items she purchased, so I can only assume things.

    Very good advice. I had been out of work for months; but I did make sure they knew I was looking for the right role and I was in it for the long haul. And I'd relocate on my cost and in spare time (with approved time off in advance to move). I also let them know we'd be buying a home to be within some reach in the worse housing market in 40 years (We are investing for the long term). I got above my asking salary, 2 more weeks of vacation, and 1% additional on bonus structure for my role.

    I probably had the only exception to not saying "I don't know" during a zoom itnerview with someone at Disney. They noticed this Disney coloring book from the 60s in the background on my bookshelf and were curious who did the art for it. Unfortunately, these old books don't really credit the artist in them, so had no choice but to say "I don't know". Other than that, they really liked that I had that book and was using it as part of a hobby. I learned from this that it is possible to use your environment to your advantage, especially during a Zoom interview.
    I didn't get the job in the end; it was for a different reasson though. Apparently they decided after the fact they they wanted the job to be on-site instead of remote. There was some miscummnication with the recuiter (who was not happy to have been given the wrong info). They were actually more upset than I was.

    Whenever I hear go above and beyond I think to myself do you go to your car mechanic and tell him to go above and beyond and to fix parts that have not been paid for.

    I think "what do you do here" is perfectly fine because I tend to ask questions that I already know the answer for. I'm interested in how you justify yourself rather than a description of your role. If you receive a flat dismissive response that refuses to sell their value or take a defensive indignant tone that rings alarm bells to me.

      thanks I signed up for it. I know I did that in my last interview because I was seven minutes late for the zoom call and then when I got on with the hiring manager to interview my phone rang three or four times in the middle of the call which interfered often with the interview.

      I wouldn’t say it’s “wrong” but it does remove some of your negotiating leverage to say that. But demonstrating enthusiasm is key so some sort of expression like that is important!

    Hey ben, I want to ask you a question! recently I have gone through couple of rounds of Interview with Tesla, every stage went really went, and finally the lead recruiter set up my final Interview with a lead engineer which went picture perfect and after the interview recruiter herself emailed me back that lead engineer highly spoke about me and alll. However, after a day or two I got an email saying they like me to do another round of Interview with another Manager. And she didn't even turn on her camera and asked some behavorial questions and bit technical which I fairly nailed it. Is it common to request another layer of Interview and turn off her camera??

    What I've been asked a lot is "do you have any other job offers/interviews atm?" And I actually never know what the best answer would be so I always tell the truth and say yes....I do have some other interviews scheduled. Why do they ask that?

      @@BenTalksTalent thanks for your fast response! Well I can tell you that question isn't at all an indicator that the interview is going well and that they want to hire me. I had this question so many times and in the end I never got the job, so what is the point in even asking me that lol

      @@BenTalksTalent yeah I just had an interview this week and it went really well (at least from my point of view). They seemed extremely interested, even asked me about my hobbies and interests ("What's your favorite movie"). The interview took 1h and 10 minutes and they were also very impressed with my answer to the brainteaser question and wrote those ideas down. In the end, they ask me that question if I have other job offers and when I could start. I really had my hopes up and everything and today I got the email that they won't proceed with my application (automated email of course- very unpersonal). Recruiters are very unpredictable, sorry Ben lol :-D
      They did, however, say that they have other candidates to interview as well and I know that that's a dead give away that they won't hire me. I honestly feel like they were F****** with me...sorry but there is no logical explanation to what they were doing

      I’m a hiring manager and figured I’d share my thought behind asking about other job offers/interviews. When I conclude an interview, the person is either put into the “no” pile or the “maybe” pile. It’s very rare that I actually decide I’m going to hire someone during the interview. The exception being if they’re the last interview and they’re clearly superior. I usually interview 5-7 people and end up with about 2-4 in the maybe pile. I then look at my notes, their resumes, etc and make a decision. Anyone who is a maybe, I usually ask the job offer/interviews question so I know a timeline. At the end of the interview, I always say I have other interviews to conduct (unless I don’t, and then I say we’ve concluded the interview process and will make a decision shortly) even if they were great and I end up hiring them. Getting asked about job offers and other interviews is a good sign, but it just means you haven’t been eliminated at that point. Being told they have more interviews to conduct, in my opinion, isn’t a sign at all because it’s often just a fact and means it’s going to be a bit before we get back to you.

    I did the unfortunate say of I dont know when they asked me about what they know about the company. I blanked out. But things seem to build quickly the right way after giving them 4 solid questions about them to answer. They told me specifics about beifits asked about pay and a detailed role about the job and mentioned advancement. They seemed really enthusiastic about selling the job role. Will missing one question be a deal breaker?

    Yeah, the swearing part. I'm so glad I don't swear anyway, so I don't have the problem of slipping up. I had a job interview yesterday and the hiring manager swore a few times, as we were in comfortable conversation and i wonder if she was impressed that I didn't lol

    I had arrived roughly about an hour/hour 1/2 early to an interview. Normally I would never arrive this early. However, in my defense, my car was in the shop, too broke for an Uber/Lyft, didn't know anyone well enough to ask them for a ride, so my only alternative was to use public transportation to get to my interview. In my neck of the woods the bus system is not very reliable. Figured if the bus was late, broke down I had some wiggle room to catch another bus . Prayed the entire way. 😉

    I once had a phone interview in a public hall, I could barely hear what the interviewer was saying and he could hear people's echo through my microphone, also got the position wrong (thought they were hiring an intern but they were really hiring for a full time position). Let's just say I didnt even bother following up 😬

      It can be a small thing but the way an interviewer interprets that can be super damaging to your candidacy. In a really competitive race for a role it can have a huge impact.

      @@BenTalksTalent unfortunately it is not how the brain works. Once we acknowledge an emotion that is not allowing us to focus properly in an activity our brain understands that we don't need to spend energy with that emotion anymore (or trying to hide it) and allow us to properly focus, in our case in the interview.
      So finding a proper way to say can be much more beneficial than tough through it and have your hiring manager (and the candidate) suffer for 45min.

      Now science aside, personally I don't want to work for a manager, even worse a company that don't understand emotional intelligence/mental health 101 concepts.

All my advice is geared towards helping candidates so I say that because I know how acknowledging it is perceived by those who interview candidates. Not 100% of the time but frequent enough that I think it makes sense to share it. So it’s tough, because I get the benefits of acknowledging it I just fear they would be outweighed by how the interviewer may discount the candidate. It’s a tough situation for sure.

    Hi Ben. I have a question about job applications. When I applied to a senior technical role, I felt that my working experience may not meet their requirement. They want at least 5 years, but I only have 4 years. So when I applied, I left a message to HR: if you are looking for a candidate with more working experience, I would accept a junior level role. Do you think that message will hurt me somehow? Thank you!

      It could to be honest. If you are only one year less than the job requirement but you feel you are qualified, you should just apply. People get hired all the time when they are slight below the ideal amount of experience. However, now they know you are open to a more junior role and they might try to slot you in for that role. I’m sorry, I’m sure that’s not what you wanted to hear.

    I disagree with your point about clarification. I think clarifying a question or an unfamiliar term in an interview shows that you can work well with teams where the requirements are constantly changing. It also demonstrates your humility and your ability to overcome your ego when you are not sure about anything.
    In other words, you come across more as genuine when you ask for clarification because we are all human, not an answering machine. So naturally we will all have knowledge gaps and trying to understand what the question is asking is a way to build trust with the recruiter.

    Yes. Showing up too early is not helpful. I make sure I arrive in the parking lot plenty early, but then I wait until 5 to 10 minutes before the interview to walk in the door. I've noticed they really don't like people showing up super early to an interview.

    Well, if it wasn’t my job, then I likely didn’t do the job, ever. This is part of the reason I loathe interviews. They don’t always want the right answers, they want you to sell yourself to them. Let’s not talk about when hiring managers drop the ball and don’t get back to candidates when they say they will. I could go on and on..

    I had an interview yesterday for a fellowship post. Didn't say any of these. They asked me about how I feel about working in a Team...I told them I love working with a good team, and till now I have been fortunate to have worked with good people and all are still in touch. They asked about what will you do after 1 year of this fellowship, and they want someone to stay with thm for atleast few years... For that I told them would love to do that... Also asked about my husband's profession . Three of the pannel members were all looked friendly and smiling throughout...at the end they said you will here from us by next week ... Feeling hopeful whats ur opinion

    "I'm open to anything" is also lazy. It makes it the interviewer's problem to figure out where you're going to fit in with their team. Make their job easy by telling them where you feel you will best fit into the team and what value you bring to the company.

    Also people need to stop announcing that they work 3 jobs. Why is this a brag? Shouldn’t it be your private life? Also, working 3 40hr job is impossible.
    168 hr a week. And total work is 120, which leaves 48 hr and what about sleep and brushing teeth eating etc? Even if he did nothing but sleep, sleep is about 6 hrs and quality of life is deteriorating. In fact I think employers use this excuse to possibly make every working day stressful and jam packed. Congrats, Gen X. Usually when people say “3 jobs” they also mean that one of them is taking care of their house or kids. Without knowing the detail or whether is a 3 part-time jobs is a big logical fallacy waiting to happen. I don’t think is helpful and it’s def harmful. What if someone likes doing two different jobs and wants to have an ideal fulfillment of life where they do both at the same time? Again, I don’t understand spreading this “pride” unless he has nothing going on but work.
