  • Dan drives his first Porsche 911 and luckily for him, it's the all-new 992 generation. It's got a 3 liter twin turbo flat-6 that puts out 443 horsepower. Let's race it down our run way to find out how quick it runs our performance tests.

      Track Day The pricing just heads 1 way.. up to nosebleed territory :). Makes a lot more sense to wait these out. It’s crazy that a 992 costs as much as a 991.1 turbo.

    • @SaulCoelho
      @SaulCoelho 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Perhaps but when you realize that the 992 C2S has equivalent performance to the Turbos from just a few years ago then it doesn't seem so expensive.

      Porsche shines when pushed on track repeatedly. Most cars are fast for a few laps and then need cool downs. Porsche are designed to run all day track events with little downtime and low maintenance costs. Plus the interior is not cheap either so the price is higher. I want a Taycan Turbo S or a GT2RS

      Joel Harris true but Porsche’s are great on track. When I went to Germany I rented a 911 drove it on Nurburgring and it had a lot of traction on the turns. My corvette is faster than the Porsche but my corvette doesn’t do as great on track as the Porsche I drove.

    This is a vintage Dan Wang video. The intro reminded me of your earlier videos, great work, amazing clock on the counter by the way (now I want one as well). I find that Porsche have always had a similar look, not that it's bad, they always looked good so why change something that works. Inflation works against us all the time but like we discussed last week it all comes down to bang for the buck. I mean, with an unlimited budget, this car is in my garage, but when reality sets in you can find close performance for much better price.

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mazman Haha I’m glad you discovered me then. Big fan of lightweight cars. I have a friend who just picked up an ND2 Miata RF so I’d like to review it against my Abarth 124 Spider at some point this year. If you’re looking for a 991 generation Porsche, it’s probably a relatively safe bet since most of their depreciation is already done.

  • @andreshado
    @andreshado 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I'd love to see more Porsche content, especially something along the lines of the 991 turbo or the 992 turbo given the opportunity. Porsche has become an odd car brand lately; some mixture of its Le Mans racing heritage and "Old golf guy" image makes it both the baseline/iconic sports cars series, and the cars that fade into the background of conversation. The Volkswagen group has become an interesting case study; despite them all being under the same umbrella, their fierce competition has led them to make cars that are perfect in their own respects. A Bentley is... Well, a Bentley. Bugatti Chirons are a masterclass in engineering beauty and performance. A $240,000 Porsche 911 Turbo S is a bargain compared to the Aventador SVJ at ~$800,000, yet offers a very marginal performance difference. But between the two, only the SVJ has the NBR record.
    Great video as always, I look forward to seeing the next one! :)

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Andrey Skorodumov I’m starting to really appreciate Porsches, so I’d like to get more content on the channel as well. We’ll see what happens with that. The SVJ is a monster but remember that NBR records are just that, records. If you or I, or anyone else for that matter got into an SVJ or 911 Turbo S, our times on the Ring would be very different than what manufacturer testers get.

    Thanks for this video. However, I believe we need a more thorough review. I've already ordered my carrera s and it's shipping somtime in December so I'm excited. I just would like to see a slightly better 0-60 time, (car and driver claims it at 3 seconds flat). Just also wondering if your tires were warmed up prior to testing and also how many attempts did you make to get that time of 3.57?

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Robin Singh Congrats on your Carrera S, the car is definitely a piece of work. I would love to do a more thorough review of anything I get, but I think what people don’t know is that I normally only get a few hours with a car like this and I don’t want to give a thorough review that isn’t accurate so I do a more generalized performance review. If a dealer/fan/friend/manufacturer send me a car for at least a day, then I can confidently give a more in-depth on the car.
      As for performance times, C&D are known to have notoriously fast times on almost anything. Also, their 3.0 second 0-60 time includes the 1ft rollout which usually accounts for about 0.2-0.3 seconds depending on car. As mentioned in the video, with the rollout, the time is something like 3.38 seconds. They probably also have all day to nail the time on a prepped drag strip with sticky pavement. Where as on an airport runway, it’s basically the same as running on the street. Plus for this car, we only got 2 attempts. Essentially, I try to provide more “real world/realistic times.”

    • @RobinSingh-lf3iq
      @RobinSingh-lf3iq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy Thanks for the reply Dan ! Good to know about your test process and it makes more sense now. I'll keep you posted about a review once I get my car. Yes these cars are very expensive (but Porsche gives you a plethora of options to add depending solely on the buyer, so it's fair to say that these cars can be optioned to a lower price), I had to spend months on my purchase decision (switched from almost buying an m850i to the carrera s). I will keep you posted once the car has arrived. And yes especially here in British Columbia, canada, the auto luxury taxes are insane. I specced out this car really decently and didn't go overboard with anything. Mine has : rear axle steering, stock exhaust, stock carrera s wheels (20front21rear), LaneKeepAssist, premium package, leather seats (no leather on the dash), gentian blue metallic, sport chrono package, and some other minor additions.
      Thanks again for your response!

    Video work is bonkers as always... The base car is just so very interesting from a performance standpoint, they are pretty quick and respond well to bolt on power upgrades as well. The price is a pill to swallow but the held value is great. The smart money is buy a 1 or 2yr old S model for a price that works. But as noted a Turbo or Turbo S is a small step up and of course the better car

    Did you prefer Cayman or 911 & why? Also PDK or manual?

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @CarGuy11 Ah that’s hard. I didn’t get nearly as much time with the 911 as I did with the Caymans but I’d have to say for street and backroads, I’d go 911. For track work, I’d pick the Caymans (specifically the 718 GT4). Conversely, for track driving, I’d pick PDK and for street driving, it’s manual all the way.

    I might be in the minority but I prefer the standard quad exhaust (this one) compared to the optional twin sport exhaust. I imagine it doesn't sound as good though..

      I think the 992 made the twin exhaust way better looking than that on the 991.2. But I see your point, although quad tip only mostly existed on 997 to 991.1, for a lot longer time, 911 had twin exhaust. to me the twin exhaust wins by some margin.

    “443hp doesn’t sound like a lot.”
    When I was growing up a 12-cylinder Lamborghini or Ferrari had 380hp and a 911 Turbo had 300. 😮

    • @patricknelson
      @patricknelson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, HP in the 440’s is still quite a bit of power for something in that weight range, particularly with the other features it’s got going for it (engine placement, PDK, etc). I got my TT RS up to 453hp/459lbft though with just a few extra grand from a basic ECU tune, so those horsies are not cheap in the Porsche, but the engineering really shows.

    Hey bro Im glad to see new video hope you’re doing well and so is your family I had a question would you rather buy $140k 992 911 4s knowing you can maybe get 5-8% off, 2016 911 turbo s but maintenance maybe a pain cause it’s got more miles, or attempt to get a 18 r8 v10 performance price points are around 130-140

    • @olivergrizzly6346
      @olivergrizzly6346 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can find a 992 4S that is somewhat optioned for $140, I'd jump on it. For me, 18 way seats, sport chrono, sport exhaust, PASM/PDCC are a must. I'd be surprised to find that for $140 since Porsche hammers you on option expenses.
      The 991.1 interior and electronics are archaic so I would rule that out, personally.
      In the end, you really can't go wrong with any of the 3 you mentioned. All good choices. Comes down to personal preferences.

      @Jose Velasquez Thanks man. That’s always an interesting choice. In this case, I’d go 992 simply because the 2016 is a 991.1 and for me, I rather get the 991.2 Turbo which started in 2017. Those would be closer in price after negotiations. I think if you get it with under 20K miles, I wouldn’t worry too much about maintenance. As for the R8V10, it’s definitely a better looking car than the Porsche in my eyes. Stock for stock performance would be similar with the Turbo being slightly quicker. Bets are off when the Turbo gets mods though. Now I don’t know what’s going on with the car market right now. COVID has really kind of made things weird where cars have gotten universally more expensive. I’d say maybe wait it out a little and see what winter looks like for the used market.

    Truly an elegant car, awesome performance overall. Definitely pricy for what you get, but at least the quality is there. Maintenance though... gotta drop that engine out just to work on it, but pretty standard stuff for the Porsche’s considering the boxer layout and position in the car. Sacrifices must be made!

    I bought a used Porsche (Macan Turbo 2015) and it's one of the best things I've ever done. I just love the Porsche, every week I find something new about the car that I love like one touch seats, independent air for passenger/Driver, blind spot warning, heated steering wheel, etc the list goes on and I keep finding new things. Yes the price is high, but fuck it. I love getting in my car EVERY DAY so there's no price tag for that. Just buy one.

    Great video, Thank you.
    In my head I'm also in slow-mo every time I get in my car ;)
    From experience, the turbo 911's are awesome in weekend or tour doses, but like many supercars have too much power to enjoy on normal roads. There is a real sweet-spot in useable power to weight in a daily car, that goes towards making a car enjoyable, any time, any weather, any road.
    However as a 992s owner, this car pushes that to the limit and on a dry day with the right tyres the 911 S leaves me lost for words on its grip, speed and back road capability.
    Would I have more fun in a Turbo/s on my UK twisty A-roads on the limit? No, I would be in prison or hitting mud / horses / cyclists far too quickly and again be back in prison/hospital.
    Would I have more fun in a non-S manual..? Well, the 991.2 T sold very well in europe and I hope Porsche listened to this when thinking about the 992 GTS...
    It may well be we have yet to see the best "useable" 992 and I'm not talking about the GT cars.

    For that money a well optioned CPO 991 Turbo S was my choice. Best daily driver supercar ever IMHO. I prefer the 991 esthetic over the 992 as well.
