    Over a year after the Porsche 992 rolled off the Zuffenhausen production line in Carrera S and 4S specification, the new generation 911 has at last grown - albeit downwards, with the introduction of the base Carrera.
    The 992 Carrera S may have won awards in the motoring press in 2019 (sports car of the year in both the US and UK), but some owners have commented the 450hp car might just be too much car for roads in the real world.
    The entry-level 992 Carrera may just have the answer to that criticism: it has less power, less tech, less weight, and costs £10,000 less. The question is, which of these rear-wheel-drive 992 models makes for the best 911 driving experience on the public road? I find out with a head-to-head test of the C2 and C2S on greasy, wintry British B-roads…

    I have driven my 992 C4S since Oct 15, and have put over 5,000 miles on it. This car is a beast! I have the rear steering option, PASM, front camera, etc. I have driven it in a rain storm from hell, and in heavy snow, and ice covered roads. I have snow/ice dedicated tires and nothing disrupts this car. Best car I’ve ever owned, and I’ve been driving 911 cars since 1984 (that was with my ‘72 T).

      Fantastic to hear you're getting on so well with the car. The 4S does offer a much better 'all-rounder' experience to the 992's repertoire, I'd have one over the C2S just for the extra composure (read: grip) as a daily driver).

    • @EOCA
      @EOCA ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you decide between 992 C4S and C2S? Have any of your previous models been 2 wheels drive and you found them lacking?
      I have owned a lot of AWD Subarus and have been thinking of coming up to a Porsche recently, and I’ve been wondering if a C2S will work in all weather conditions, or should I stick with a C4S for weather conditions? I was thinking RWD might be fun for a change, but I worry about winter conditions a little.

    Besides not getting the option of a manual, you also can’t get the LSD for the base Carrera, which is a shame! That’s what made the 991 Carrera T so appealing - base engine, little bit less sound insulation, a proper manual and your good old LSD.

    Just bought the base Carrera Cabriolet 3 days ago. Slowest car I’ve had on 7 years. It’s perfect. It’s fast through the corners and revs beautifully and I don’t find myself constantly hitting brakes right after acceleration that you get with the sub 4 second cars that I’ve had. I think it’s either the base or the turbo S if you want the top of the line or you track your car.

    I've been postponing decision to get 992 because I wanted to check out the base model, and it turned out all that I wanted it to be it. Less powerful and high tech, maybe not raw but more down to earth. Got a silver one without any performance enhancing options and a few leather upgrades - the last time I was that happy with a car was 911.1.
    With 991.2 S I felt the car was a bit too far from what 911 have been so far, too close to a precise track machine and Turbo.

Not even the sales rep will talk like that. If you take a look at some of the videos/posts made from real 911 owners, definitely not all of them has the sports chrome package. Hell, most GT3 owners don’t even take it to the track.

    • @WahabGoldsmith
      @WahabGoldsmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@reginaldjackson6204 I have it on my 911S, and it’s more than just launch control. It adds easy access to sport, sport plus on the steering wheel, a beautiful clock gauge in the center, and most obvious, the launch control. I’d like to emphasize the first point, the sport and sport plus button on the wheels have been so incredibly useful then clicking elsewhere. I use it everyday, and multiple times. Sure, launch control is used once every few weeks, but to just minimize the package into one single feature (which I believe is still amazing to have regardless of how often I use it) is not doing it justice. It’s a sports car at the end of the day.

    I just put my deposit down for a new 911s 992. It’s in the adventure green, pdk, Carrera s wheels in satin glosss black, sports exhaust with tailpipes, door. sill lighting, leather steering wheel, inside two tone burgundy red leather. I got the basic lights but they seem good enough and have the dot matrix too, reverse parking cameras, side mirrors reclining and interior ambient lighting. I am so stoked. It’s my forst porsche. It is an 18 month wait list. I don’t mind waiting to get the “perfect” spec car…. For me in anyway especially since I have some budget “constraints”
    I basically met my budget. I was thinking about going for different wheels and the sunroof which would have added several thousands. That’s the thing with Porsche, every single option costs extra. You could effectively add 60k worth of option if you wanted to go all out on an S.
    I am very interested about your thoughts in what the spec I outlined above. I am asking because you seem to be very knowledgeable about 911s. This being my first one, even after research, I was getting conflicting views and positions. Any thoughts, both positive and negative are welcome.
    If you should have a little bit of time to give me your thoughts, it would be highly appreciated.

    Base Carrera---for guys who can barely afford asny of the 911's and where buying a "Carrera (base)" is a huge stretch. The "Carrera S" --I t hink is for the buyer still kind of on a "duget" or can afford any 911 but doesnt see any point in gettinga 4s, Carrera 4s GTS, GT3 or Turbo S....for a car that will spend 100% of it's life on city streets driven by someone with "average STREET driving skills".... The only 2 911s to consider IMHO are the base Carrera andd the S.
    If we REALLY think about it....what IS the point of all the "race-oriented TECH" put into more expensive 911's and Supercars?? These are STREET cars. driven on less than ideal roades next to drivers of varying skill....less or more capable cars, trucks....how many guys out there buying these cars answers to the name Michael Schumacher? Race in Indy or F1 or GT.... ??
    Most of these Supercars and high$ sports cars are driven on city streets with pot-holes, cambered roads, gravel, grease, broken glass.....there are no ""road race flat city roads...that are maintained"...to that level. :) So for those guys buying the flattest widest peformance tires...heh....waste of money there too...actually end up giving worse handling e.g. low profile tires that are "too firm"...on cambered roads... where the roads raise up in the middle...heh
    Funny....most men growi up dreaming about one day owning that Ferrari....only to realizze (mabye) that they are piontless in their hands on city roads. :))j Most drivers of Poecsches will drive them no different than as they would a Fiat 500 :)

    Lee, confused by the comments on the tyres. Was it the Goodyears or Pirellis you didn’t like. And why do Porsche stick the big wheels on their press cars?

    • @ronstopfer2315
      @ronstopfer2315 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This 992 comes from the factory, standard, with 20” front and 21” rear. Believe me, there is NO shortage of rubber on standard delivered 992 cars!

    • @rivaterrier
      @rivaterrier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ron Stopfer the S comes with those wheels, the base Carrera comes with 19s and 20s as standard. As Lee points out in his video.

    • @9WERKSTV
      @9WERKSTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the Pirellis I don't like. I think the PR cars have to do a job of simply looking the best they can, it's why they're always specced to the hilt. In this case going with the standard wheels would have been preferable, though, as I believe it's crucial to what the 992 Carrera is all about.

    • @rivaterrier
      @rivaterrier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That Nine Eleven Guy. I am a bit biased. My base 997 Carrera was on 19s when I bought it. I got some 18s with winters and preferred the ride and lower road noise, so have swapped my summers for 18s now. I think that the higher sidewalls are much better on British roads, particularly for a daily. I am sure that I am missing out on some ultimate grip, but do I really care if it’s nicer to use for more of the time?

    • @9WERKSTV
      @9WERKSTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Wrong I'm afraid, buddy. Sport Plus is optional, to both the C2 and C2S, so using it on one and not the other means it's a leg-up and not one that's unique to the S model. Cheers.

      That Nine Eleven Guy correct. Sport chrono w/ sport+ is offered on both. SC wasn’t on the base which was odd. A 911 w/o SC is a travesty!

    I am planning to take the base Porsche. Not because of the price, but simply because I find the differences to small to upgrade. Especially in the era of tuning. I would spec the base completely sporty (Aero kit, wheels, etc) and flash tune it for an additional 60hp and 90nm just for 500 pounds. Looks the same, sounds the same, drives the same and costs less. What do you think? Thanks.

    • @smiles1151
      @smiles1151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CARBONELLA CARBONELLA Just don’t tell Porsche that you’ve caught on to their little game lol both have a 3.0TT.. and the base has a more NA response at boost compared to the S. So a tune would put it at S level power without the lag. Cheers!

    Now 911's and the options are grossly overpriced. They are using "covid" excuse way past its expiration date and the ship that sank with Porsche's on board. So they "can't produce enough cars" which isn't true. We're being played. Walk away for a year or two and they will again get reasonable
    Maybe quicker. I was ready to buy one. But I don't have to have one and the prices need to come down a little before I will buy. It's principle at that point. But I think you sold me on Base Carerra. Stick shift is slower. To me I want to go fast and be able to hold a drink at the same time. PDK for me. Maybe Carerra T but none of them until Price declines some like
    $10-20k

    It’s lost the curvy body.Its lost the Porsche ethic, of course its faster and has more bells and whistles.The rear end is industrial,two pipes and a load of plastic. The VW intervention is so apparent. I have the 997 and I went to the 992 launch at Porsche Nottingham. I parked my car next to the 992, initially I was impressed and then you see the dimensions,it’s a sporty Panamera.

      They should have left that band of lights and fat ass for the 4s and turbos and put separate left and right lights on the others with proper exhaust tips. Cayenne has that same ugly fat rear end. It looks like they are copying Lincoln. The 2015 and later models looked perfect. My 991s looks better and closer to the 997. I used to have a 9974s.

      @@paull3179 I’ve had my 997 for 7 years now and I have have been very tempted to change to the 991, particularly the gen 1 pdk non turbo. The last Porsche built 911. For me the 992 is too big and bulky and the rear end has lost its aggressive feminine curves. It’s a VW now.

      I sold my 9974s in August and just bought a 991.1 S pdk a few days ago and I am enjoying it much more. Very refined and the tire noise is gone. Feels much quicker and the sound is excellent with the sport exhaust off or on. The audis all all looking the same too now. My old S4 looks better
