I just got my first ever 911 base carrera. I’m 45 and grew up poor, not destitute, but definitely this was not even in my dreams. I’ve wanted one since I saw it in Bad Boys I. My friend and I rented this on a whim for a day. We drove it around Santa Monica Mountains and PCH. I've never been a 'car guy' but now I'm obsessed with this car.
Now THIS is where it's at. The others are beautiful machines, but they belong on the track. This trim is for the streets. With how slow everyone in my area drives, I could get away with having sub 100bhp & easily flow with traffic. Having a higher trim 911 would be unusable 90% of the time. The base trim is pure, honest, & very usable.
Can totally take a 911 to Costco. I do it in my 997 all the time. It won't fit TVs or carpets, but packs of paper towels and cases of cerveza no problem.
I just rented a 992 Carrera this weekend and it was so nice. I would love to experience a turbo or GT3 but this already felt so powerful and responsive.
Great video. I've heard it referenced many times about the rear grill being a "9-11" visual reference but I'm not so sure because it's actually "9-2-9" if that's the case. I think it is actually a reference to the slats being the current variant designation of "9-9-2" (two sets of 9 identical slats flanking one set of 2 brake lights). Or maybe....both which is even more clever. 😉

The 992 Carrera is an amazing vehicle. Completely agree PDK (esp. with Sport Chrono) is superior to Porsche's 7 speed manual. Like yourself, am a 'Save the Manuals' advocate, so preferring the PDK is high praise.
I bought my base 992 almost exactly one year ago, I use it as a daily driver. So far it's been awesome except there is one small downside I found out about at an inconvenient time - the key fob eats batteries nonstop, as in it never stops drawing power on the battery. And you aren't going anywhere without a powered key fob. Now I keep a couple spare batteries in the car just in case, and I keep the spare fob disassembled in a plastic bag in the house so it cannot use up it's battery. The 992 has met all my expectations. Younger me may have sprung for the Turbo, but today the base is fast enough. For a while I considered waiting for the T to come out, but I found my PDK on the Jacksonville Porsche lot with the color & options I wanted and decided it was time. All my other cars over the past 13 years are manuals and I have a beater 912 for those days I need to row on my own. In short I have no complaints about the PDK, if I did I would trade in for a T and that hasn't happened yet. Regarding the S, I think the tuning potential is higher with the S because it comes stock with larger turbos. However you can pick up an ECU which not only gives the base model effectively the same power as the S, but also a bunch of options you'll find aren't in the standard Porsche menu like fully-time Sport mode (which also disables engine start/stop). So unless you're really looking to add a lot of customized power beyond what's available with an ECU don't discount the base model just for a few tenths of a second because an ECU can make up for it for not a lot of money.
What porsche does really well is keeping the familiarity of the car as much as possible. They had to go turbo but they made the sound and rev profile match. They had to go keyless but they kept the twisting thing. I have a base 2005 since a decade and watching your video bring to me the emotion of those drive and the smell of the interior. Is that damn winter over yet?
Here’s the best verdict you’ll get on the base vs S vs GTS. I own a GTS in California however I have family in Toronto who I visit every summer and can’t live without my 911 all summer so I use porsche drive subscription and I’ve subscribed and driven both the S and base. In my personal opinion, no difference in daily driving whatsoever. GTS feels like more car if you want that rough riding track feel car. But between the S and base there’s honestly no noticeable difference in daily driving whatsoever. I genuinely couldn’t notice a thing.
Can't tell you how many times on Rennlist people say "these cars are meant to be driven" and then the very next sentence is "I drive my 911 about 4,000 miles a year".
This video is amusing because I own an old Miata that is basically used for canyon carving on weekends, it’s not pristine but set up for handling and that’s the way we should all see these fun cars as. A driver and not a garage queen. Well done.
We bought our 992 Carrera Cab in December 2020 and have put nearly 50,000 miles on it. We drive it! It’s been an absolute joy. Never uses a drop of oil, still feels like a missile on the highway. A few electronic glitches like any German car, but overall it’s solid as the day we took it home. The PDK suits the character of the car and with the Sport Chrono package we get a nice exhaust sound. Not too overbearing. The best thing about the car is the engineering. You can feel how everything works in harmony. It’s a “base” car in name only.
My 1988 911 was an everyday driver. I put 144,000 on it, and it was still solid right up until I sold it in 2012. I miss that car EVERY day. And yes, it did take a bit of "education" and the willingness to explore the boundaries to fully enjoy it. Sadly, $110K has moved the goalposts for readmission to the club out of my realm. (FYI, it you want to see some really "crummy" roads come to Sonoma County in N.CA)
The 987 Boxster/Cayman was like this. You could ring out the engine, bury the throttle and actually allow the car to drive at 100% for maybe 10 seconds before you had to back off. The 996 turbo has that "scary speed" Ted talks about but you only get like 4 seconds before you're going straight-to-jail speed. It just doesn't stop accelerating. Two different beasts altogether, but to each their own.
I am remembering 80's 911s from when I was in High School. This 992 is a callback in so many good ways. The damn trunk is useable! *faint* Sure, this 992 is the base car. But it could shred most other cars in corners or on a track.
I had this car for a year and half… and after only 9k miles it had a bunch of reliability issues. 3 electrical failures in 3 weeks… It was a nice car, but a bit boring 👀 the fuel range with the extended range fuel tank was awesome though, 29 mpg easily, and 650 miles on a tank
I had a 2022 base 911 for a year, my first, loved it, and would have kept it for good but was lucky to get one of the last 2023 Spyders as they stopped production. @@TedwardDrives So do you think I should trade in my naturally aspirated 991.1 for a newer 992 Carrera T or S? Or is that simply a fool’s dream that I’m getting a better car? My S has 400 HP. Not too shabby. But I love the look and modernity of the 992!
Great video Tedward 🙌 Base Carrera’s are as rare as chicken teeth in the UK (I guess most ppl go for the S?) I waited for 2 years to get mine from the Porsche dealer 😅
Thanks, bro. You really get it, even that nice later-model SAAB didn’t get past you. Thank you very much! Liked, subscribed and shared. My absolute favorite TH-cam channel by far.
I love seeing cars like this reviewed. I'm currently struggling to fix my 09 Vibe GT so I'm obviously in no way, shape or form in a position to even dream of a car like this. It's about obtainable as a GT3 RS but if I do dream then I can pretend a bit easier.
Great video! If I was going to buy one, I’d buy this one. Living in the UK, with speed cameras everywhere, enjoying a car and revving it to redline isn’t the same in a torque monster like the 911 turbo. This takes more driver involvement to go through the rev range and plus it is still easily fast enough. Id also option the burmester and maybe the heritage seats
I absolutely love the way the base 992.1 Carrera sounds WITHOUT the sports exhaust. It is great, such a wonderful car all-round. My main complaint would be it has a bit too much cabin noise. I do think it is a bit down on power, so the S model or a tune would be good.
It’s funny that it’s got a built in radar detector. I was just thinking “why don’t sports cars come with a built in radar detector?” And then I figured: “oh, it’s because they’re illegal in some states, so the car wouldn’t be 50 state legal”. But I guess Porsche does it. That’s nice. I wonder if it’s only available as an option in states where radar detectors are legal. Overall, I think this car captures the Porsche spirit amazingly. You don’t need to be the fastest or fanciest. It’s just a great driver’s car. Also, I agree about not having too much power on the street. I had an 05 E55 AMG, with 469hp, and I felt like I rarely got to use any of it. Now I own a 2017 VW GTI with a stage 1 tune, so about 290-310hp. It’s perfect. I can go WOT and be going fast, but not too fast. I’m able to use the whole car. And it handles like a go kart, so it’s a blast. I have way more fun in it than I did in the E55.
Much to be said about using a whole car. As much as I drool over supercars, the GT3, and many other cars, ripping through the rev range and gears is a major thing that is fun about driving. If topping out in 3rd means you're doing 105MPH, how often will you be able to do that? Not on back roads, really. I used to stomp on my dad's '90 Civic Wagon, forcing the auto into a pseudo-manual experience. He had some good tires on it and I had a blast on back roads. A 108hp $200 Honda. No disrespect to all the fantastically fast cars out there. I still want them lol. But pushing the limits of a vehicle is great...and the faster it is, the fewer places you can do it.
The great part of a base 911 is a simple tune will bring them up to S/GTS levels of useable torque. As far as the steering feel, I'm surprised automakers aren't utilizing haptics to translate more road details into the steering wheel
@@jasonshort3047you’re clueless. Messing with a car’s ECU is 100% voiding the warranty. What are you even talking about? Do you even know what a tune is? The tuner has to crack the ECU and change things the way the car wasn’t engineered for
This just shows to what extent 911s - all of them - are truly great sports cars and all rounders. No other car maker can boast this in the same way and with the same flavor.
I've had 7 Porsches in my 62 years and my favorite is my 2021 992 base. No need for anything faster in L.A. I use my base as a daily and never have any issues.
Agreed. I was looking at a 718 GTS and everyone was talking about how good it sounds but I don’t think so - this Carrera sounds great - way better than that 718 GTS.
Hi I’ve got a 911 992 and everyone complains about the dials Cant be seen because of the steering wheel covering the out side dials .The settings can be change so you can see them through the steering wheel quite easily.
I have the prior cup holders and by no means is the one I have preferred. It is far flimsier and when your drink spills over - and it will. It spills into your a/c unit shorting it out. $900.00
Old cup holder design was prone to failure and believe me when you stick iced drinks in them (like coffee or sodas) they drip condensation EVERYWHERE, including passenger legs and center dash.
Starts at 110K, probably optioned to 120K or lesss, then tax. Makes the GT3 look like a bargain at only 170k (you'll save more than the upcharge due depreciation on a base 911) Of course, you won't be able to get a GT3 at sticker.
He mentions rear wheel steering, which is not available on the base. No idea why not, when you can get PCCBs and things like a carbon roof. I have the RWS on my 991.2 C4S and love it.
I like your videos, especially as I live a town or two over from you, so fun to see you ripping through my pissin' grounds 😂. It would be cool if you could put up a graphic maybe in the intro that shows the basic stats of the car (base price, as tested, HP, torque, 0-60, 1/4 mi).
I always forget there’s a base model 911 available since there’s so much praise around the S, 4s, and other submodels. I definitely consider buying a manual base 911 if I had the coin. Edit: No manual option?? LOOL I don’t want it anymore but it’s still a neat car

The 992 base engine sounds great! Have a 991.1 S and this rivals it on pure sound.
991.1 is a million times better sounding
@@TedwardDrives I got a 991.1 c2s with akropovic exhaust. It sounds unbelievably loud and nasty.
@@TedwardDrives So do you think I should trade in my naturally aspirated 991.1 for a newer 992 Carrera T or S? Or is that simply a fool’s dream that I’m getting a better car? My S has 400 HP. Not too shabby. But I love the look and modernity of the 992!
i love the simplicity of it, not in my top/dream 3 992 but its probably the most attainable 992
Tedward...your videos are THE BEST! Informative, fun and a cool dude. Keep it up
Thank you!
Great video Tedward 🙌 Base Carrera’s are as rare as chicken teeth in the UK (I guess most ppl go for the S?) I waited for 2 years to get mine from the Porsche dealer 😅
The 911 is always most impressive in base form. Just the C2 or C2S.
With the higher end trims, you kinda expect them to be amazing.
It would be nice to see a base 718 cayman pov review in comparison to the 911
Its beautiful in the basic version! The only thing that annoys me is that you cannot easily see the engine and it does not have a manual gear box.
Manual is available on the T and the S.
992s are beautiful, love the videos you've been putting out sir !
Thank you!
It may take me 25 years, but I will own one.
The fact that this doesn’t have a limited slip differential is a deal breaker tho. It‘s an expensive performance car, it should have one.
9:22 YOU NEED TO REVIEW A 900 SPG!!!!!!!!
You are great gonna buy this in 6 months, cant wait
911 looks way better with the quad exhausts, change my mind.
The great part of a base 911 is a simple tune will bring them up to S/GTS levels of useable torque. As far as the steering feel, I'm surprised automakers aren't utilizing haptics to translate more road details into the steering wheel
Sounds like a smart idea. Tuning a brand new Porsche
@@DoctorGaga87 yeah, why wouldn't it be?
@@jasonshort3047 voiding the warranty on a brand new car just to get some more power. If you’re gonna do that just get the higher trim.
Guapo no single thing you do can outright "void" a car's warranty.
2:20 Also with the slats under the rear window, there’s 9 on each side and 2 in the middle. 992
I had a base 997.2 w/ PDK and loved it. This is probably wayyyyyyy faster still.
Man, those shifts are lightning fast, but I’d still go with the 7 speed stick!
I've had 7 Porsches in my 62 years and my favorite is my 2021 992 base. No need for anything faster in L.A. I use my base as a daily and never have any issues.
Sounds great from the inside!
Agreed. I was looking at a 718 GTS and everyone was talking about how good it sounds but I don’t think so - this Carrera sounds great - way better than that 718 GTS.
After 15years hard work im buying 911 myself this month
heck yeah!!!
Would still be going for a base 997 over this
I love my base 997 c2 a lot, would be hard to give it up
Hi I’ve got a 911 992 and everyone complains about the dials Cant be seen because of the steering wheel covering the out side dials .The settings can be change so you can see them through the steering wheel quite easily.
Ah, Blue Hills! So nice to see the familiar roads!
Looks like a nice daily for the enthusiast
Fantastic video as always, but still not enough to convince me over the 991.2
I have the prior cup holders and by no means is the one I have preferred.
Porsche 100% make the best sounding cars... man i cannot wait till the day i get one.
I would be very happy with this "base" 911 😆
Great review! Well done!
Starts at 110K, probably optioned to 120K or lesss, then tax. Makes the GT3 look like a bargain at only 170k (you'll save more than the upcharge due depreciation on a base 911) Of course, you won't be able to get a GT3 at sticker.
Well done LOVE the drivers head POV.
Runs like a champ
He mentions rear wheel steering, which is not available on the base. No idea why not, when you can get PCCBs and things like a carbon roof. I have the RWS on my 991.2 C4S and love it.
To me, this a perfect road for a 911! Nice video 🙂
Was waiting on this, very nicely done!
Impressive how quick the “base” 911 is. Kudos to Porsche for keeping up the distinct engine character with the added torque of the turbos.
awesome video! I'm going to work very hard for this car
However much PDK is brilliant, I would still prefer a good, old fashioned manual. I think it would suit the character of this car better
Carrera T is the base with more options, including a manual! Rejoice!
@@SonoCars thank heavens
I drive these Blue Hills back roads all the time in my Panamera and I swear I'm behind that Malibu every time.
Great review by Tedward as usual.
4:27 This aged like fine wine LMAO
11:17 I like Ted's makeshift speedway 🙌
