Interestingly enough, in palette town in the finished game prof oak's aide mentions that the radio show is pre-recorded, so an imposter prof oak showing up to "record a new program" would be a good way to get team rocket into the radio tower to take it over
Yeah which made a lot of sense in the final game as he was constantly moving around, but back then the Imposter could have simply shown up since he had nowhere to be.
What these games really need is a fast food chain since Pokémon us coming to McDonald's on August 16.

You know, one idea may be that he was the one that orchestrated a similar radio wave plot as the Lake of Rage section. It seemed more like mad science than something random for an organization to do. Since they are Team Rocket with Giovanni returning from the looks of it, maybe the plot was to cause mad Pokemon to spread across Japan, and "Professor Oak," was telling people over the radio that he could "cure" them and to send them his way. Feels like a simple enough plot for that generation of game anyway.
back then Lake of Rage didn't exist but I wouldn't be surprised if the subplot was still there in the old build, but I do think it would have made alot of sense for the Imposter to be behind the radio waves since he clearly was a scientist regardless if the card theory holds true.
Imposter Oak makes me wonder what Blue and Agatha are up to, since those two are prominent figures that would be able to tell he's an imposter.
Blue in the 97 build was with his Grandpa as a researcher, so he was just as oblivious. Agatha while in the 97 build hadn't been assigned to anything yet, so hard to say what she was up to.
@@TheObsessiveGamer what's your opinion on the "Blue became a team rocket informant" theory? Do you have any counter point to it? It states he was recruited on that bridge north of cerulean. He was the one who probably bullied Bill in that machine and Bill just lied.... He shows up at every rocket location before the boss fight; Silph co, game corner (I think), lavender town, etc. It's fun to think about. Let me know thanks.
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo I just think people are trying to make Pokemon darker than envisioned lol Remember, Blue is envisioned as an 11 year old boy who is just supposed to be a jerk childhood rival. Being the rival that he is, he as such tries to stay one step ahead at all times.
@@TheObsessiveGamer when I was researching about the development of the game, I guess it was originally going to have mature themes and the original target demographic was 11 to 16. And Nintendo stepped in to not liking the idea and recommended the game to be tone down to increase marketability. The manga for Red and green is pretty mature and is closer to Satoshi Tajiri vision of what Pocket monsters was going to be. Alot of the beta artwork for Red and green had trainers with wips which we see with bug trainers and Sabrina game sprite.
If you haven't seen it already but Didyouknowgaming in collaboration with Dr. Lava, Hirespokemon, and the original English translator for the games, made a video translating the earliest Pocket monsters book which was this official Pokedex.... the book sets the ground for the franchises lore and the Pokedex entry are mature and even perverted on a few.
There was also a lot of tcg artwork that was edgy some would be banned or asked to redo for the English release in America for example naked misty.
The plot in the first movie with Mr Fuji working for team rocket to make Mewtwo and in return clone his died daughters is super dark. That's why 4kids removed that opening act which would make that whole movie make no sense.
The classical era of the franchise was already "edgy" or "heavy", whether fans make it to be or not. In the end its a game with a fictional story and it's just fun to think about these things.
@Miguel Garcia Eh it was dark but still had limits. Tajiri said that because of the limits of the Game Boy game, he probably wanted an epic story on the GB but couldn't do it. Gen 1 was plenty dark, I doubt it was meant to be any darker. Now if you want some conspiracies with in-game evidence, Silph Co made Mewtwo, and the Radio Tower takeover was also about using radio waves to bring in Ho-Oh and Lugia and control them.
In Super Gold '97 ROM hack, he was a pawn of Team Rocket during the Stand City section only used to fool people into thinking thier experiment with radio waves was helping Pokemon. Afterwards, he was disposed of.
I mean as much as I love Super Gold 97, he story definitely was even more elaborate than i'd expect in the actual game lol
I remember that anime episode well. No doubt they liked to throw in ideas that were scrapped from the games anyway.
I just recently read move combinations were an idea in early Ruby & Sapphire, a line still exists in the code that alludes to it. That's probably what the infamous "Thunder Armor" Ash beat Tate & Liza with was referencing.

Are we talking move combos like Sunny Day+Solarbeam or something else? Cause that's in Gen2... The Earl's Academy in Pokémon Stadium 2 actually had a whole section for it.
I *think* Thunder Armor was supposed to be a weirdass adaptation of Swellow's ability Guts, could be wrong tho, but yeah,
the anime did indeed reference scrapped ideas, Gary becoming a professor after the Johto League was probably a reference to Blue role as Oak's assistant in Beta Gen 2
(And I will argue that the Kalos endgame in the Anime was probably an adaptation of what was supposed to be Pokemon Z's plot)
@@YashaMikage Not move combos, but literally combining moves into a new move. Apparently Gen 3's double battles would allow for that. Like if both use Ember and Gust at once, it would create Heat Wave

The radio tower theory must be true, it explains a lot. I wonder when Elm showed up and replaced Oak?
Elm might have entered in 1998 when they switched to the new build.
4:25 Impostor Oak is one of the first Pokemon TCG cards I ever saw. So, him existing without context was creepy to me, as a kid.

I find it kinda interesting that there had been designs in the TCG that pretty much represented what Game Freak wanted to do at the time of those designs being printed on cards. Nowadays, it seems like some designs existing outside of the TCG are reused for other characters that originate in it. Case in point: there's a clear resemblance between Emma from the XY games as well as the Adventures/PokéSpe manga, and the female "Adventurer" trainer in the TCG. And, keep in mind, the latter appeared well after the former made her own debut. Nevertheless, there's no reason given for the resemblance. And no indication of if the female Adventurer is supposed to be a generic trainer or actually be related to Emma or not.
It would be awesome if rom hackers somehow put him back in the game with some sort backstory. Just like with Gorochu, I feel like Gamefreak really dropped the ball here. It feels like a missed opportunity.
Then best to look up Super Gold 97 for that already happened :P

I'm probably going on a wild tangent here... but what if Imposter Oak is one of the scientist that defected silph co. For team rocket? Probably all of them got dissafiliated and marginalized. Also it would create a grudge against oak and his pupils... after all Green/Blue was involved in stopping the take over. It would also explain him being an inventor (if the character would have been fleshed out they might have gone as far as saying he was involved in the development of the master ball).
Hey now that's a really good backstory. Maybe it was the case? Maybe this is how we would have gotten the Master Ball in the 97 build lol

That's a really good theory..... It's makes even more since when you take account when you go through Silph co, you end up fighting rogue Silph Co. Scientist in red and blue. Or at least that's what I remember.
But did Blue do any work to help? Doesn't he just show up right before the boss fight?
I need to go back and watch the Johto season of the anime, I missed it as a kid and now I feel like there's some moments that would kick up some nostalgia from having played so much of Gen2. Jessie and James dressed as Mary and Oak sounds hilarious.

In manga, Sabrina's Kadabra disguises itself as Imposter Professor Oak. Yes, an actual Imposter Professor Oak!

Yep! I did know about the manga, but the manga seemed rather far removed from the game since that plot point involved Sabrina and a bunch of gym leaders as a part of Team Rocket, so I didn't include it in this analysis.

Yeah. I imagine they didn't have too many ideas of how to further expand upon the Imposter plot if Oak isn't as important as he originally was

I legit think his concept eventually became Executive Petrel, given he's a team rocket member who impersonates Giovanni and the Radio Tower director until confronted.

Since it's easier to know what happens inside North Korea rather than Nintendo HQ we'll never know for sure what was the original intention for Evil Oak to be in the games but your theory doesn't sound crazy either, maybe the first game was going to feature a subplot where you had to clean Pro. Oak's name after being impersonated by Evil Oak while you are in your Pokémon adventures, maybe having encounters in key places through the main story as you uncover the real reason why he started to impersonate Prof. Oak and what his intentions really were after he succeeded with his plan of destroying his reputation as a renown Pokémon scientist.
My little theory is that Evil Oak is the earliest prototype of Team Plasma, I know it sounds stupid but if Evil Oak is the ¨evil twin¨ of Prof. oak then he represents the opposite of Prof. Oak's personality, while Prof. Oak is a famous scientific who always advocates for the correct treatment and well being of all Pokémon and also guides new trainers into the art of training their Pokémon and the relationship between them, Evil Oak would be probably someone brilliant who sees all Pokémon like an unnecessary dead weight that is interfering with humanity progress as a civilization therefore wanting to separate humans from Pokémon not with the intention to ¨save them¨ from us like Team Plasma but with the goal of making everyone starting to fear and hate all Pokémon as if they are wild aggressive animals using the world most renown scientist identity as a tool to get attention and recognition from the masses while proposing how to contain the ¨threat¨ with science with the ultimate goal of convincing everyone that the human intellect and technology is superior than a bunch of animals that yell their own name and are unpredictable so dangerous to humanity. I hope I explained myself well because I'm wasted right now.
I mean a lot of Gen 2 leaked out, so who knows lol. But the idea of the Imposter being the clear opposite sounds like a rather neat idea though.
There was a town called Silent Hill in the old build of the game. Like that is really cool to me.
Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee canonically introduced Green for the first time, after she was scrapped from Red and Blue, so maybe Let's Go Togepi and Pichu (or whatever Pokemon they choose to represent Gen 2) will include that scrapped Imposter Professor Oak.
I think it's quite likely that Prof. Oak does disappear - just not from the start of the game. Remember how in GSC there is a crime at the lab that happens after you leave to get the pokemon egg? It's possible that in the earlier versions Prof. Oak disappears at that point.
Maybe? That could be another possibility in that he is kidnapped so no one will talk whatsoever and then send out the Imposter in his place
This video makes me want to rewatch the episode when James impersonated Oak.
It sounds like Imposter Oak was going to be a parody of Jagi, an iconic villain from Fist of the North Star, which is something the people at Gamefreak wouldve grown up with. Jagi's claim to fame is impersonating the protagonist in order to defame him. It sounds like imposter oak was a more kid-friendly version of that plotline.
Pokemon Gen 2 is the gift that keeps on giving!

My theory is that imposter oak is petrel from team rocket.on his card it has the R sign to show he is related to team rocket and petrel allways impersonates other people Also this shows why he wasn't in the game because everytime you meet him he is someone else. Also his card mentions revenge which I think petrel said about once before

Yeah I don't expect him to be in another remake of Johto. If he wasn't added into HGSS with all the care put into it back then, I doubt modern GF would care enough to do so.

I know people like the Silent Hill name for the starting town; but would it be more accurate to refer to it as Shizuoka or Silent Hill?
Well considering they translate or even localize all the time, I feel it is appropriate to at least do a direct translation to fit in line with the rest of the series.
