    At this point I'm more curious about beta leaks for gen 3. The time period of gens 2-3 were the most unique artwise for pokemon. It still maintained its own identity unique to the pokemon world vs gen 4 onwards where it started imitating reality more. Fashion was simplified to match rl. Heck look no further than the GC pokemon titles for how unique to pokemon everything looked

    Update Notes:
    -Accidently referred to Komala as Gen 6 when it was actually a Gen 7 Pokemon
    -Beta Cyndaquils colouring being Green and pinkish appears to actually be from the sprite being overlayed over Larvatars and thus may have also been assigned that colour too. Therefore the whole idea that it was an ice type could very well be possible as that may not have been what GF intended as the intended colours.

    Referring to the beast trio as legendary dogs always confused me, even as a kid. You can kinda make a case for Suicune and Entei because they're somewhat ambiguous but that just makes the beast classification work better. Raikou is a straight up cat though

    I recall hearing about Game Freak actually keeping unused designs to use for reference and inspiration in later generations. The leaks do seem to prove that true. One obviously being Leafeon was originally designed for Gen 2 before it got cut and later redesigned for Gen 4, but there are a lot of examples of the cut Pokemon and ideas that you could imagine may have influenced later Pokemon (the Farfetch'd evolution may have inspired Sirfetch'd for instance and beta Dunsparce reminds me of Silicobra and Sandaconda, the former in particular).
    Also, it's almost scary how much that scrapped Pokemon resembles Elfin that you have to wonder if the designer knew a designer from Game Freak to see it (or they saw the leak). If it was deliberate, at least that design did get used for something in the end, even if it was over two decades later and not as a Pokemon.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Surprisingly GameFreak did confirm that Sirfetch'd apparently wasn't influenced from Madame, so that may be one of the exceptions. Otherwise I do agree as some of these do indeed look to have been reused later.
      I want to know who drew the Pokemon Elfilin and if that person may now be working at HAL now and thus why it may have come to this lol

    Tip on Japanese pronunciation -- They don't have stressed syllables like we do in English. We tend to stress the second-to-last syllable in Japanese words by default (e.g. naROOto for Naruto, saKOOra for Sakura, or in this case, iGAHroo for igaru).
    If you say Igaru without the stressed middle syllable, it sounds a lot more like Igloo! (especially since it makes the middle vowel quite a bit shorter, making the g and L closer together)

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh thanks! I'll keep that in mind for future pronunciations. Regarding Igaru, because it is more trying to pronounce an English word is why the second to last syllable doesn't have that stress right?

    • @BabusGameRoom
      @BabusGameRoom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheObsessiveGamer Cheers dude! I'm so happy to get a positive response. Some people hate getting pronunciation tips, but I'm a linguistics nerd, and I think it helps understand things a bit better (especially when talking about translations).
      In Japanese, syllables are generally thought of as not having any stress. I believe this results in syllables sounding "rushed" to us. Each vowel (when preceded by a consonant) is roughly half as long as one of our regular vowels. Generally speaking.
      So when we try to say "Igaru", we tend to naturally put the stress on the "a", and inadvertently make it more than 2x as long as it is in Japanese. In Japanese, it's pronounced, but it's subtle -- like a child who has trouble putting a "g" and an "L" together trying to say igloo, but instead says igaloo.
      Anyways, great content! I may be back in the comments in the future with more pronunciation tips! Haha

Perhaps it was a rejected Celebi sprite that they felt was too good to lose so they just modified it a little and stuck it on a Pokémon they already had programmed. There is another sprite for a Girafarig pre-evo that only exists as a backsprite, showing what looks to be a pre-evolution of the Girafarig we know from the final. It appears in the '99 demo if you use the white blob in battle. Evolution data also exists suggesting that Girafarig was at one point a 3-stage line, so I think we could have had that as the Basic, present day Girafarig as the Stage 1 and Spaceworld '97 Girafarig as the Stage 2 final evo.

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The backsprite appears to be more an early Girafarig's backsprite. I don't think it's a mid-stage as nothing has pointed to it ever having a midstage but rather just an early version of the final Girafarig

    • @megatronacepticon
      @megatronacepticon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheObsessiveGamer But Girafarig's final version was in the '99 demo as the evolution of the blob that has the backsprite and there's evolution data in the files that points to Girafarig evolving into a stage 2. I'm not sure where in the files the evolution data is and the picture someone posted of the relevant data has been deleted, but I definitely saw Girafarig with preevoltion data for the blob and evolution data for something else entirely. Not only that but if you consider it a 3-stage line you get to see Girafarig's second head grow into a full head. The second evo is called mitei05 in the data. The file that references it is called SHINKA.OLD. We have no evidence of what mitei05 actually looked like, so it using the '97 Girafarig sprite is pure speculation, but it fits thematically to have a young giraffe with an eye in its tail that evolves into an adult giraffe with a small head in its tail that evolves into a pushmi-pullyu with a fully-formed second head.

    Not only did Honooguma eventually turn into Teddiursa, Honooguma's 3rd stage evolution is Dainabea which most likely refrenced/inspired the design for Ursaluna in Legends Arceus.
    Dainabea and Ursaluna are both third stage evolution Pokemon in their respective lines, are both large, quadrupedal bears with forehead marks and both have large manes of fur in the front halves of their bodies.

    Also, the only tanooki we've got as a Pokémon is Zigzagoon, a Pokémon I like and is really cute, but has nothing to do with myths related to tanookies and their magical powers, a big shame as we have a few fox Pokémon based on kitsunes and their magic (like Ninetales and Zoroark), but no tanookies, so I hope we get magic based tanookies (like a Psychic, Ghost or Fairy type) in the future, it feels kinda wrong to don't have them

    In a parallel universe, those pokemon in the beta were actually in the final but we would never know and spacegold was the final with the skateboard, evil oak, team rocket and giovanni in gen 2 along with gen 1s 256 pokemon available because of robots and technology being available in the late 80s in that parallel universe. No wonder Gen 4 was always my fav gen... there was always something "different" about it.
