  • In 1998, Pokemon Gold and Silver development started over by replacing the full map of Japan with Johto and Kanto. Even so, the locations were still very different from the final games. Today we explore these Beta Maps of Johto.

      @@DawnLynnCat Sprite updates aren’t reboots. I’m talking like how modern games have larger cities and 3D environments. Reboots are different from sprite updates. By reboot I mean like a reimagined Johto and not just better graphics and some new features slapped over it like HeartGold and Soul Silver were pretty much.

      @@DawnLynnCat Which isn’t much based on what I’m saying. What I am wishing for is a major reboot and not just the small things HGSS did. Not to mention HGSS is a DS game, which is very old now so it isn’t really relevant. Also FRLG didn’t prevent Gamefreak from making Let’s Go so there is that. Although by reboot I mean modern games like Legends Arceus level of hugeness but with obviously more towns and modern things.

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I believe a better way to express that is "reimagined" as it doesn't have to follow the original games design but only its story, thus we could get massive locations.

    0:38 This is actually a common misconception. While Iwata did give GameFreak a compression tool, it didn't actually save space--in fact, it cost a little bit of space. What it actually did was speed up the decompression to make battles start faster. In fact, he gave them what was basically the same compression algorithm he used on the Gameboy Kirby game (LZ-19).
    The reason they were able to fit Kanto is because they were working with larger ROMs--1MB for Gold/Silver vs 500kb for Red/Blue (Crystal is 2MB).
    If you're interested in learning more, I go into great detail in a reddit post including a spreadsheet comparing the two compression algorithms. Can't post the link here, but I'd be happy to share with you!

    It's most likely that Lugia was not implemented in these early builds, hence the absence of the normal Burned Tower and Whirl Islands. It's very well documented that Lugia was created by the lead writer of the anime/movies to serve solely as the main legendary of "Pokemon 2000/The Power of One." It didn't get added to the game until the late stages because Lugia wasn't even created by Game Freak.

The original idea to cover all Japan regions was VERY ambitious by that time, but nowadays I would love to have a reboot of Gold and Silver like that, maintaining all the best of the 3 versions of development + the new regions (including Hoenn and Sinnoh).

    Lugia was created in late 1998 exclusively for the second Pokemon movie so it is likely it was not Silver's mascot at that point hence no whirl islands. I theorize that Silver's original mascot was one of the legendary dogs we saw in the 97 build.

    I think they cut and toned down the other Japanese structures not for worldwide appeal but to make Ecruteak more unique. After all, Ecruteak is VERY Japanese, it's kind of its whole thing. If every other town had those elements to them then Ecruteak becomes less distinct and therefore less memorable. So they toned down the building exteriors to still give a hint of traditional Japanese buildings (certain interiors, like those in Azalea, are also rather traditional in the Japanese architecture, further discrediting the theory they were removing Japanese elements for overseas) while still leaving the more distinctive architecture to Ecruteak to give it some more identity.

    • @elli_senfsaat
      @elli_senfsaat ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After all, there isn't that much traditional architecture in our real world Japan's big cities, either lol. It's pretty modern and western-oriented. They could still have used some traditional architecture for rural villages, though.
      But I agree with your theory about Ecruteak. It's design is fascinating precisely because it's unique in the game.

    I have to agree that it was a huge misstep to modernize the maps for International audiences. The distinctively japanese-styled houses would have given this game a more authentic athmosphere compared to the modernized Kanto in the latter half of the game and would have ingrained this region even more into the memory of its players. I can only imagine what fascinating lore they would have added to those places since "Ecruteak City" was also the place with the most "lore" in the final game.
    But that is Pokémon in a nutshell: A lot of missed opportunities.

  • @ArcadianLegend
    @ArcadianLegend ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Iwata was responsible for increasing performance in battles via a new compression algorithm. He had nothing to do with adding Kanto to the game. That was achieved by switching to a bigger ROM size.

      Not as false as you think. Every game needs compression normally to fit a cart. Problem was the GameFreaks compressor wasn't good enough, so Iwata made a better one that can compress even if the compressor itself was larger, it still compressed at a better rate to make it doable.
