In a world where Oak is so famous and seen almost everywhere, it’s not crazy to think he has an imposter running around, benefiting off of his fame.
That's probably the reason it was cut off from the game, maybe they didn't wanted to have a character depicted as an evil professor, but I also think his role was taken by Petrel (or TR executive) in the final games, so maybe was the professor who was kidnapped and not the radio director

I heard of a theory where the Oak we meet in Gen 1 and Gen 3 Kanto is an imposter that no one recognizes as a fake.
It's a shame that the radio feature wasn't expanded on more in later games, if nothing else, it could've been cool to bring it to the modern age with a Pokemon world version of podcasts. Could've been a neat way to squeeze in more optional world building.
I always thought it was neat. It went deeper than just the TV’s in peoples houses.
Imposter Professor Oak would have been a nice post-game boss just like Red was, that's for sure!
Also, could you imagine if we had the same possibility back then as we have now for holding data inside a cartridge? Pokémon G/S/C would have been ENORMOUS with crazy amounts of content!

I like to think he was a rocket administrator who was meant to use the new dark type. Likely he would of been battled only three times before disappearing kinda like Giovanni as he was there leader at this time. Since weirdly dark types are basically unused in johoto so it makes sense he might if been meant to introduce the dark type. I assume his ace would of been either umbreon or senseal as I can't see them giving a rocket admin a ttar even at the final battle, murrow isn't fully evolved and Houndoom is used by other rockets
He could have a Houndoom and the Executive who became Archer could get a Sneasel instead to be more of a counterpart to Ariana’s Murkrow.
He clearly had a Gengar and Koffing, maybe poison type was enough
I did hear a theory once that the Professor Oak we see in the original Gameboy games and Fire Red and Leaf Green is actually an imposter and the real Oak is being kept hostage in an unseen location. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Basically the theory goes that Oak is kidnapped and another man is posing as him and is pretty good at it too except he makes the mistake of not knowing your name or your rival’s name which is why he asks you for them at the start of the game. He then memorizes the names to keep up the act. The second piece of evidence that he is a fake is the fact you deliver a package to him and he doesn’t seem to know it was coming or what is inside of it when you give it to him. He also doesn’t seem to know a lot about Pokémon. The final piece of evidence that hints he is a fake is how he yells at your rival for “not caring” about his Pokémon which is obviously not true. This Oak also seems to favor you far more than his supposed grandson which is also very odd when you think about how most grandparents love bragging about their own grandchildren over other kids. Eventually Oak is either rescued or escapes off screen and this is the one we meet in all other games and his personality is very different. The Kanto Oak (not including the Let’s Go Oak) seems impatient and want to get you away from him as soon as possible and says quick sentences whereas in other games he will speak to you at long lengths of time and has an actual conversation with you. He is also much more relaxed and will tell you about Pokémon. The theory says that the imposter is a Team Rocket agent sent to pose as Oak to keep tabs on where Mewtwo is and what it is up to. As a Pokémon Professor, Oak has connections all over Kanto that Giovanni doesn’t have and he’d be the first to hear about anything odd happening with Pokémon. Plus Pallet Town isn’t too far away from Cerulean Cave or Viridian City and is really close to Cinnabar Island which all have connections to Mew, Mewtwo, and Team Rocket.
I think it's really interesting how in the Manga Sabrina was a member of Team Rocket. Makes me wonder if that was true at least initially for the games. I mean isn't it strange how she uses the same technology as they do with her teleporters?

as @DarkLink1996. says tho yeah in the manga like half of the kanto gym leaders are part of team rocket including sabrina, surge, koga, and initially blaine but he redeems himself. brock, misty, and erika are all still good guys tho.

I liked the Johto anime because it had pokémon in it and I was a child. First I’ve heard about it not being good

I’m of the opinion that thecanime really never needed to follow the games story line, the thing that’s always been interesting about the anime is it builds a bigger world around the world the games present.

Back when I was a kid, I always thought Impostor Oak was a secret boss in red and blue. and when I did everything you can do in red and blue, i then assumed he was a character added in yellow along with jessie and james as again, a secret boss when yellow was released. Again so i thought. Especially when kids in the playground kept making up their own fake cheats on how to encounter impostor oak. I didn't have yellow back then so I couldn't disprove myself. but eventually my cousin confirmed he wasn't there either.
This is probably the weirdest coincidence, but my last guess as a kid was that he'd appear in the then upcoming games, gold and silver. and it turns out, little kid me was almost right since his sprites do appear in the beta. but unfortunately he never appeared and maybe the closest are the scientists you fight in team rocket's lake of rage lair.
i'd like to think that impostor oak's design was eventually used as the basis of guzma's design years later, but guzma is not even a scientist or someone pretending to be one. i just say cause he has a few details that are similar to impostor oak.
I hope this character returns in a game, although it probably should’ve return in any of the johto or kanto remakes. I would’ve done it in HGSS, where instead of the Radio director Petrel impersonates Oak. You’d even fight him as “trainer Imposter Oak”.

Gold was apparently 70% done when it premiered at Spaceworld. According to an old issue of Time magazine, the games were delayed because Satoshi Tajiri got the flu; I’m guessing they missed their initial deadline, so decided to redo a ton of stuff to improve the games.
While I think the demo is cool, the released version is better, since you can return to an (almost) complete version of Kanto. (They included a version of Kanto in the demo, but it was cut down to Pallet Town.)

imposter professor oak also shows up in pokemon card ni natta wake/how i became a pokemon card! its hard to find information on it and i know ive read an english translation of some of the chapters but i cant for the life of me find it again. if memory serves, he showed up in chapter 4, akane coloured eevee i believe. i dont think he was called imposter professor oak at any point, but i dont recall if he was called anything instead or just not named. he was either akanes grandpa or a family friend of some kind i think, unfortunate i cant remember more. regardless, a character sharing imposter oaks design does show up

It seems around 1997 when Pocket Monster 2 Gold & Silver was gonna be released the media partners like the Mangakas, TCG makers and Anime Producers involved were given some info on what the game was gonna be about and character artwork and Imposter Professor Oak was a standout.

Pokémon is probably no stranger to the Multiverse, but it’s still leaves him Imposter Oak and other characters to exist the way they’re portrayed in many of those hypothetical universes. Who knows if we’ll ever see most of the missing TCG lore such as Imposter Oak among other things ever in what some of us would feel to be a proper or closer to what their interpretation of said character would be. Aside from what the main anime would suggest.
