- Pokemon Gold and Silver had a development cycle that changed drastically as time passed with the game even getting rebooted once. These include large differences to at least 142 Pokemon that were altered or cut. Today on Cut Content, we explore these Pokemon

Fun fact about Umbreon: Despite becoming pure dark in the final games, It's Pokédex still mentions it having "poison sweat".
To add onto this, after the distribution nerf to Toxic, Umbreon is still one of the now few non-poison types to learn the move

Those leaks were a gift that keeps on giving, I love how we're still learning about Gamefreak's thought process for Pokemon over 25 years later. It was clear from Ho-oh appearing in episode 1 of the anime that the Pokedex was never set in stone, even in the first games. I fondly remember those days before social media when the debuts of Togepi and "Pikablu" drove us nuts trying to figure out.
You're making some wrong conclusions because you forgot that the games come from Japan and were released over two years earlier than in the US.
The Anime came out over a year after the first games were released, so obviously new Pokémon beyond 151 were only considered after the success.
Ho-oh being in the first episode of the anime is why I hate the "Ash is dead" theory. Even if Ash died in that episode, a literal phoenix flew over him immediately after.
Tsuinzu looks like a preevolution to Wobbufet too
I remember getting stadium 2 before gold and since Pokémon stadium has jumbled up names, I got a lot of gen 2 Pokémon names wrong lol
Tentaquil in 2010 was a fun one. Turned out to be Beta Politoed.
Here's another fun fact! This time it's about Porygon 2: It's beta design is strangely similar to a Japanese food mascot named Pon De Lion. Even stranger, Porygon 2 predated Pon De Lion by several years.

Technically they did bring the stork idea in the form of Bombirder in Gen 9.

Kotora (the electric tiger) was absolutely turned into spheal, and perhaps even it's evolutions were recycled into sealeo and walrein.

This video fully proves Ho-oH isn't anime's creation, it was GF's creation and i'm glad for that.
I find it funny how little he took note of the dinosaur skeleton Pokémon at the end. It's possible that it's the monster from the original idea for the second Pokémon movie. Basically archeologists would have discovered some more dinosaur bones which would have come alive and destroyed stuff. It was supposed to be weirdly existential because if the headspace of the writer at the time (He kept writing stories about coexistence including a Pokemon revolution idea) In interviews he said it was meant to be a more normal dinosaur, but that could have changed before it was scrapped to better match the established lore. I really want to know if its index is by the legendaries.
tbh I wouldn't put tooo much stock into the idea of the movie vs the game, especially since that movie was made after they had already scrapped that skeleton.
That idea was for the third movie. Lugia was for the second, as told in this video.
Any Gold and Silver related always seems to have some good content involved in it.

Now if only we could have a complete list of gen 1 I remember they said when Gen 1 was being developed they had 300 designs and when Gen 2 was done it was 650ish but I remember Satoshi and Ken saying every generation of Pokémon ends up deleting half to most of the ideas they have.

This is but one woman's opinion, but the earlier beta Dunsparce design from 1996 would have been better as a final evolution that Dudunsparce as it has a much more original design rather than just having a longer body.
One wonders likewise if the flying ninja squirrel eventually became Emolga as well.
Animon is probably Game Freak seeing liquid metal terminators in the movie theater.
I always thought the hopip lines were plant cats and the beta sprites kinda prove it
We got a tanuki pokemon, Zigzagoon is a tanuki hence why it learns Belly drum, Tanuki's drumming on their bellies is a common trope in Japan.
It's strange because it evolves into Linoone which is a japanese badger.
If the hoppip line kept its 97 cat-like beta design it would be one of the most popular pokemon ever easily

Considering how gold and silver were supposed to cover all of japan and show kanto as a big city instead of a full world map, that would have drastically changed localization, map sizes and expected numbers of new pokemon per generation
The viking ship pokémon has some (albeit very minor) similar traits to the tiny snake pokémon…

A master or leader legendary dog would have been sick. Also I immediately thought of wobbufets tail when I saw that pre evolution of giraferig.
I would say they made the right decision on the final design ideas for most of the pokemon we’ve seen here.

Thanks for making the video. Just to point out to you, the original sprite design for Remoraid looks more like a pistol in nature, compared to its final rendition, which has replaced those features with fins
The original design was in alignment with Octillery's original design as well, featuring a military theme.
Yeah, it's unfortunate how the gun ->tank inspo became less obvious with their redesigns though. I mean I heard that was the connection before, but I couldn't see it until I saw the beta sprites
7:57 - that mini Girafarig backsprite got left out. It's the backsprite of that white Wobbublob thing in the 1999 build that evolves into Girafarig who by this point had its final design, meaning that it was presumably an intended Girafarig preevolution between Twinz and becoming Wobbuffet. Most of the other Gen 2 beta dex videos forget to mention it too and it's a shame that we only have its backsprite, but it's clearly a separate preevolution of Girafarig.

Manbo is a similar looking fish character in Link's Awakening so it's name was probably a placeholder reference
Manbou is just the Japanese word for sunfish. It's just as generic as many gen 1 Pokemon Japanese names.
Everyone who watches this should play the gold 97 reforged romhack where you can use all of these beta forms.
One thing to remember is the Pokémon ,at least early gens, were created as sprites first before being drawn, it’s likely many of these were only ever meant to be proof of concept and not indeed to actually be put in the current game.
Also. Bellsprout having a planned evolution could be an explanation as to why Speout tower was in the game.
Also this is the first time I heard “Animon” pronounced, so I just realized the pun
I absolutely adore some of the beta Gold and Silver Pokemon designs. Baby Meowth, what looks like the original design of the Hoppitt line with the cat faces, the original Espeon and Umbreon, the Giraffarig and pre-evolution design, Bomushika the fire seal, RinRin, original Politoad, baby Vulpix, the potential Tangela pre/evolution, Norowara, MANBO (but not so much the other 2), original Scisor, and I don't know WHAT to think about original Blissey but it's kinda cool, oh and OG Octillery is just infinitely better - whoever changed it should be fired.
8:55 surprised you didn't notice how much remoraid changed, it looked alot more like a gun in the beta which makes sense being its based of a revolver.
Have to say, I love these cut designs and many of the pre-finalized Beta designs and original evolutions. In some cases more than the finalized ones, even.
Don’t get me wrong I Love Typhlosion, but I can’t get over the fact we had a bear fire starter, and it just got scrapped.
Am I the only one that sees a link between Madam and Lugia?
The Madam design was in the '97 demo and Lugia didn't appear until the '99 demo.
They clearly have some design similarities and it's fishy that the Farfetch'd evolution was cut as the 2nd Legendary was added to the first Pokemon sequel.
I theorize that the Madam design was reworked into Lugia.
Lugia was originally made for the anime. Then was decided to be put into the games.

Lugia was commissioned by Takeshi Shudō, the writer for the first 3 Pokemon movies.
He requested that a new pokemon be created for the movie.
Being the writer and not a monster designer, he may have written a description or provided a sketch, but the actual design itself was likely created by Ken Sugimori or another member of the G&S monster design staff.
There isn't a lot of solid information about when exactly the movie began production, but it seems unlikely that the writing would have begun before '97.
I haven't found enough information to be able to say if my theory holds any water, but so far I haven't found any holes either.
I would love if Gamefreak did a fan service and one day release the beta version of Gold and Silver with all the cut content included. I really want to play the version we could've had.

The Kurusu line 100% inspired the creation of Samurott and the Popplio line.
Berurun line 100% inspired the Liepard line, with Purrloin standing on 2 legs being taken from Rinrin.
Urufuman 100% became Snover.
The Kotora line 100% got turned into the Litten line (Just look at the markings of their backs being the same as on Incineroar).
Norowara became the inspiration for Cacnea line (The thing on their heads looks like a crown).
Agree with almost everything, but I believe digimon adventure was the trye inspiration for the cacnea line 😅😂
I really would like to try a romhack that recreates the Gold and Silver Betas
I'm pretty sure there are probably a few of them out there
(because usually people like to make Beta recreation hacks and mods for games)
Super Gold 97 is one that adapts some of it. None of the latter ones though in the second half of the video

The lack of Mikon is the second greatest crime of pre evolutions in Pokemon existing. Greatest shortcoming is lack of a baby form of Kangaskhan.
The one you were mispronouncing Tsunizu is actually Tsuwinzu (Twins), hence there being two!

You know, aside from Shellos & Gastrodon, I don't think I've EVER seen them reuse a scraoped Pokémon. Which really sucks because some if these Pokémon have really cool designs. Like the tigers that were somehow scrapped TWICE, the Voodoo doll (that could've been where the move Curse came from), and the ones that wore animal pelts..
Bombirdier and Bellibolt bare a striking resemblance to the scrapped stork mon and beta Politoed

The nail origin is more likely from an urban legend from Japan. Where you have to nail a straw doll between 1 and 3 a.m. on a sacred tree, by a shrine. You have to think about a person you want to kill while doing so. After 7 (?) days and nailing a doll on a tree every day they die. It's a forbidden thing to do but everywhere in Japanese culture. Voodoo is African (parts) culture.
The scrapped Tigers did come back though.... but they got turned into the Litten line (Just look at the strip pattern).
Mm... A lot of discarded designs seem to be reused in the fourth generation, like, a lot, almost if they had no ideas for that generation and simply took something from the vault.

kinda spooky how so many of the shiny forms are the same color as earlier sprites of the same creature, also the politoed one looks a lot like Bellibolt from gen 9.
Majority of these designs are awesome imo. That bulky Scyther bets evolution but with our scizor's head would have been amazing
Togepi and Snubbull were after Ho-Oh because they were going to be mythicals. Ilex forest beta name was even named after called Buru snubbull's japanese name
I thought Japanese name was just "burudoggu" without "dog" part...
I don't know how you didn't notice, but Norowara and Kyonpan ideas (4:09) were used in Banette, its pokedex literally says it "sticks pins into its own body to lay strong curses".

I'll imagine the earlier forms of Raikou, Suicune, and Entei are who went into the tower.
The remoraid -> octillery line makes so much more sense when it is a gun that evolves into a tank instead of a fish that evolves into an octopus. They fumbled so hard when they changed them.
My friend had a Japanese version of the original gold and silver I always wanted an explanation of what game it was because it had pokemon that till this day I had never seen again untill now thanks so much for this it explains so much!

The pokedex ordering is actually really simple to explain. They were more focused on designing new pokemon and the easiest way to get them in the game for testing is to add a new entry to the pokedex at the end and insert them.
Edit: I would love for future legends games to go back to older unused sprites for pokemon to make and influence new forms for them as "ancient forms." It makes sense as in real life these are the earliest known forms of these pokemon.
It would have been nice to see these old pokemon designs in action in Gen 2.
arcanine is also based off the sisha and was part of the bird trio at first and was based off folklore, thats why arcanine is the "legendary" pokemon and is why it has such high stats

Animon is used for the Pokemon Crystal intro. Ditto changes in a split second into Animon when transforming into the Game Freak logo
Fascinating. Some good designs in there, though in most cases you can see which one(s) they later became. A Kokopellimon would be swell. My favorites were the original legendary beast trio, all looking like dogs instead of just Suicune…but they also better resembled alternate Vaporeon/Jolteon/Flareon than legendaries.
Thank you for drawing conclusions about these mons. Idk why it’s so infuriating watching mons like archetypal huntail come up and the video author not take a swing at what it could be.

6:10 actually 🤓 In the Pokédex entries and in an episode of the anime, it’s said that ledian have a connection to the stars, and stardust trails them when they fly. They also have 5 spots which are connected to the stars too

Dnt know if anybody mentioned it but at the time 20:40 he mentions ho-oh being the leader of the three legendary birds when that was actualy lugia in the movie pokemon 2000 as the balance for all their respective natures and ho-oh was the resurrector of the legendary dogs that died in the tower in ecruteak city
I meant that if THIS happened with that silver dog legendary, they could have done it like that with the bird leading the birds and the dog leading the dogs. Basically if my theory of the dog is true, the mythos around Ho-oh likely was different too

Some of these designs were clearly due for refinement, but a lot of these I would gladly take as is. Makes you wonder how many cut Pokémon are still sitting around to be given another chance.
Would have been cool if the squid with drills was a tentacruel or similar evolution. The stork Pokemon did get used in S/V?
Old Hitmontop's back "leg" could have been a tail possibly. It would make it a bit less weird if you looked at it like that.

Honestly, they should've kept the idea of Pinsir evolving into what's now Heracross. It would've pushed the idea of Scizor being a rival even further
