About half way through this video I realized that you’ve personally taught me a few of these in game. Nothing stupid like the drawing board, but definitely some weapons/tactics advice. I appreciated the kind advice and you guys putting up with how terrible I was 😂
I make these videos because I remember what it was like to be new, and I've always felt it's important to treat new players with respect and patience. Glad I could help you out, dude - see you in the game.

I'm new to Quest 2 and there are alot of kids but i've also met tons of super helpful vets aswell as some that are less desirable. Over all had no issue when asking for help though. So thank you to any of you all that i meet out there
All of these are common practice etiquettes that I was never taught and just learned from playing. It's nice to see that it's not just in my head... Let me add that is good etiquette to hush up when someone is coming to revive you. It has often made me a target when I am trying to help out a teammate.
Lonely Viper’s videos made me get the game, and I have been fumbling through training and AI matches (ie defeats). Thanks for your videos! This will help newbies get better so the game is enjoyable for new and veteran players.

After watching this, I finally bought Onward. I'm an old Arma2, Arma3, and Squad player to name a few. I really enjoy teamwork. It'll take me a while to get my VR FPS legs in a game like this, but it's right up my alley.

So I got prepared the night before but when I joined his server everything was different. The points changed from 11/12 to something like 12/18. Also my fore grip was different and most of my stuff was scrambled. Is this because he changed something? I was on the same faction and same class.

As a vet player my biggest pet peeve is trolls and idiots.. I am completely ok with brand new players as long as they stay in pub lobbies til they have a feel for the game and know basically what they're doing. And I think those of us who are vet players need to put the foot down in comp lobbies and nudge the brand new players into the idea of playing literally anything but a comp lobby until they are well oriented in the game, and kick them if they refuse. But I also think new players who are'nt trolls should be accepted and given whatever help they need to orient themselves - some of them are future league players after all.
Agreed. If someone doesn't know how to ready up or reload a mag, then it doesn't make sense for a new player to be in a comp lobby. But for the most part, newer players with good attitudes are fine. It's the jerks who are the bigger problem in the game - and boy are there a lot of them these days.
Well you kinda predicted all quest players, i got onward on quest at launch and learned this kind of behavior in the first day. I like the more serious community players of Onward. I’m loving the game and im actually not bad at it but not good enough to play competitive
I would argue that it's best to start playing competitively if only to get your skills up to a level where a team will recruit you. You can do that by becoming a reservist and playing in scrims. This is such a useful video, thank you for this. I have owned Onward since I got the Quest, but after playing it only a few times, I stopped and haven’t played it since. Being new to gaming in general (at 43 years old) I had and still have so much to learn. Pop One was my baptism of fire, one example of how green I am re gaming is the term “GG”, I honestly had no clue. At first and because it was mainly folks from the USA who used the term “GG” I considered that it may be a horse related heritage thing, until somebody actually said “Good Game” and the penny dropped with a thump, making me feel extremely stupid, haha. Anyway, the reason I haven’t played Onward since my first attempt is because despite knowing nothing about gaming, I know enough about people to know that this “game” is not PacMan, it is not a computer game as us older people view them. Rather, Onward is a serious sport where serious players compete and where their experience and results matter to them. I have played against AI, but before I jump back in to play with others I want to be able hold my own and at least know that I did my best. In one of your other video’s, you define different players including those who play for fun, and those who play for blood. For me, I can play Pop One for fun, whereas, I would like to learn Onward and integrate with its community as more of a hobby to take seriously and improve. This leads me to my point, which is more of a question really, is there such a thing as a boot camp server? When I say boot camp, I mean a place to learn alongside persons of your calibre where coaching takes place and scores and mistakes don’t negatively impact others whom it matters? I haven’t looked online for such a concept yet but if it exists, I would appreciate it. Thank you again for these video’s, all the best.
There have been attempts at that, including what's called the Onward Rookie Bootcamp (ORB for short), but most have fallen flat. A good alternative is to come to my Discord (since you're new to gaming, Discord is where everything happens - get it if you don't have it already). It's called The Cult of Theta and I host lobbies called Serious Fun Time (SFT) lobbies, which are designed to be played by league standards but nobody is keeping score. It's a great way to get introduced to competitive play without the pressure of being on a team, and many quality league players on high-level teams cut their teeth in SFTs. You can join by going to invite.gg/ThetaVR - feel free to ping me in there if you have any questions.
@@ThetaVR Thanks for your reply. Your channel is very good and far more high-brow than most gaming channels I have seen. There is far more to gaming than most non gamers assume, right? It really is a sport and especially in VR. I am going to join your Discord now. I do know Discord now, but it is still new to me. I am slowly getting the hang of it. For work and study I am a long term Mac user. I left Windows in 2011 (Windows 7 I think) so gaming, PC’s and VR is all new. Discord is really busy and clearly geared towards gaming but besides the busy interface etc.. Which I struggle with, I do think it is a good tool. Love your JuJitsu quotes, it boils down to leadership 101 and being a team player and I love that. I am looking forward to getting involved a learning this game. As annoying as some parts of Pop One can be, I do really enjoy it, especially the social elements. However, the more technical parts of Onward and the greater depth of strategy and tactics of this game lend itself better to a proper hobby and/or sport. After all, I can’t afford a new GPU for Microsoft Flight SIM yet anyway. So, I will work out some significant goals to achieve in Onward and reward myself with an upgrade haha. Thanks again bud, cheers!
i remember when i got my first pc because i wanted to get in to shooter games. i chose TK as my name, because it is the initials for my real name it made perfect sense to me, took me a while to figure out why people would write angry messages to me all the time, i would even reply and ask what the hell their problem was, sometimes i would get votekicked immediately when i joined a server and i could not figure out why, much like you, somebody actually spelled out teamkiller and it dawned on me... 😮
Extra bit of etiquette don’t be that guy that TK’s at the end of the match. Everyone wants to celebrate a victory wether in Co-Op or online and getting TK’d can actually ruin the vibe of a victory and make people not wanna be around you. Just not a good look.
When I got my Quest 2, the first game I bought was Onward. My first online multiplayer, I was in the tent with everybody else and some kid says to kick me out for no apparent reason. I manage to come back, although I'm not sure if it was the same players, but I went on a 7-0 rampage before leaving with a big smile on my face.
My number 1 rule if a gun is aimed at me they die :D. If they dont know the gun safety rules then they need to get off this game and learn how to fire a real gun.
the game looks fun just due to the mechanics it has in it. but is there a causal mode? this seems to have a flight sim level of officialism. When really it would be nice if it was more CSGO or TF2 like.
Eh, it's got some of those mechanics but the primary game mode (uplink) is designed to be more cerebral. A lot of people don't like it for that reason.
I feel like most of these are common sense and common courtesy. It's a real shame to see the nonsense people put others through. Thanks for the beginners hints!
The laser is not only useless, it is harmful because enemies can see it from a mile away. If you bring a laser into a PvP lobby it will signal to everyone there that you don't know what you're doing.
The point of the ir / laser is you use it only when you know you are going to take the shot then you switch it right back off even sf use it but only when the shot is being taken they don’t run with it on because the enemy might have night vision that info was given to me but my cousin who is a army ranger so that’s how I run just thought I would share that with you
I just got this game for the oculus quest... I’ve always been the type of person who plays any or all types of COD games. But since oculus quest never featured any type of these games. I’m excited to play it soon... This video was very helpful for new comers like myself. And I now know what to expect and what my team expects of me. I will try my best not to be a noob. But won’t be shy to ask questions either. Thanks for the video homie... oh and p.s. I don’t have any friends who currently play this. So please feel free to message me your gamer tag to add, If your playing on the oculus quest. Would really love to make a TH-cam video with NEW friends to play this game with. 😎 TH-camr (Eric For President) led me here by the way...
Excellent, glad to hear you're coming into the game with such a constructive mindset. I plan on continuing to play in 1.8, so I'll be around. Right now I only have PCVR, but you can find me on Steam.
A large proportion of the player pool is completely sound. Small proportion are good but do annoying things like giving away our spawn. I wish everyone would watch these videos.
Something that is also a dick move is just kicking kids who aren’t doing anything there are alot of kids in this game who are complete assholes but then there are ones who actually try and help your team and get kicked for being a kid
I'm sorry but with that discord guy, after he said you're a try hard. I wouldn't have been able to mentally stop myself from just popping a cap in his rear.
I can see this from both sides of the came. Some people will play VR or game as a means to relax. Most people want to improve and get better but some people don't want to be mentored or in worst case situation have a drill instructor act as if a game is real life. For some playing fair and taking part is enough for them. Plus in the real world you don't know someones set up. I have told people in the past I have a boss already I don't need another one online. Some people want to progress on their own and learn through making their own mistakes and not adopt an errorless learning mindset. In the other side of the camp it someone is being friendly and trying to help you level up or become better if you prefer a more chilled fun come first situation maybe play that game and then leave that lobby. I have played many games where the team i am playing with are experience and friendly then some drill instructor type has come on and killed the vibe even when we are winning. Remember we all game for different reasons as as long as someone is not trolling then its all good. I hope onwards has private lobbys for people who really take the game serious.
One thing I’ve experienced is getting kicked because my voice and username don’t match I was assigned male at birth but identify as female and I’ve been kick several times for being trans
That's terrible. You should record every time you play, and if anyone harasses you, get their player ID (which you can do by highlighting their name in the tent and clicking a thumb stick), then send the video over to DPI. They will ban people who use slurs or otherwise harass other players with hate speech.
@@katlynlundquist6929 Go to the Onward Discord and find a community manager, then DM them with the video. Those instructions I provided assumed you were on Oculus.
I 100% Drew out a plan that was in the shape of a dick last night but in my defense I was in a co-op lobby with 2 real life friends... I'm way too bad at the game and nervous jumping into a live lobby to do it...
In terms of feedback, maybe there is also a constructive way to give it. Being a cocky, condescending douche bag is not setting the conversation up for success. An example of this is in the clip you provided to illustrate the guy who didn’t receive it well.
I had a kid who got mad cause we told him to not draw on the board and not shoot at us cause he would give away our positions and we team killed everyone Also when someone doesn’t ready up right away try to be nicer and just give them time Also drawing on the board on the quest 2 drawing on the board breaks the game Also people in games with respawn enabled don’t ever res and it is awful especially when we have no more respawns Also the people who are new might be confused so in the comp lobby don’t kick them right away tell them what to do when they leave tell them to go to the shooting range or public lobby
There are some jerks in the game (like in any community), but this isn't about disciplining people or obedience. It's more about the fact that this game has an existing community with some norms, and a lot of new people don't even try to learn those norms. You're free to violate them, but be prepared for a negative response.
@@skwidthecrayfsh34 That's fine, but having fun at the expense of everyone else, especially in a game with low TTL and up to 6 minutes of wait time between rounds, will not go over well. I really don't understand how this message translates into you somehow having your freedom taken away. You can do whatever you want, but there are consequences. Just like real life.
I really dislike that you are not supposed to express that you are new. This alone would make me behave in a way where I try to figure things out on my own and not pay attention to others for a while when I start out.
How are you inferring that I said it's not OK to express that you're new? At no point did I suggest that. The whole point I was making is that this is a challenging game which requires coordination with other people, and a lot of new players decide they'd rather just ignore everyone else. You can do your own thing in a lot of other games, but in Onward that will make the experience miserable for everyone else in the lobby.
Useful video. It's a shame that basic stuff like simple courtesy has to be explained but well done for doing so in such a calm manner. Hopefully see you on the battlefield.... :D

“Let me live my life! Aaaahhhhhh!!!!!!”😂 how old is that kid?
How the hell did you reload your PKM so quickly? The belt is super glitchy and won’t let me put it on
I've been using the PKM for a long time. It does take some getting used to.
3:45 got em
You seem like the only sensible person in the world 😂
Ha, I appreciate it but the fact that I spend so much of my time making videos for a niche VR esport would suggest otherwise...
I feel like most of these are common sense and common courtesy. It's a real shame to see the nonsense people put others through.
Thanks for the beginners hints!
Yep, I wish more people would just be courteous by default.
But do u really not need a laser tho?
Right now I only have PCVR, but you can find me on Steam.
are you on a discord call rn? ye my bad I'm sorry. that was just brilliant
can every damn onward player watch this god damn i get so many children doing that stupid stuff and people team killing for no reason
I don’t care what you say!
I need my flashlight! Even on quest where it does nothing!
You do you, dude.
The intro explains why I don’t go into competitive games so I don’t fuck anyone’s game up
A large proportion of the player pool is completely sound.
I had a kid in a free roam constantly going around saying the sacred gamer word which you can guess which one.
@@ChristisKing0605 yeah he deserves to be spawn camped
I'm sorry but with that discord guy, after he said you're a try hard. I wouldn't have been able to mentally stop myself from just popping a cap in his rear.
I get called a try hard all the time, I'm used to it at this point. Not sure why that's the go-to insult, but it's by far the most common one I get.
@@ThetaVR where do I contact dpi also I play on oculus
@@katlynlundquist6929 Go to the Onward Discord and find a community manager, then DM them with the video. Those instructions I provided assumed you were on Oculus.
@@ThetaVR ok thanks
I 100% Drew out a plan that was in the shape of a dick last night but in my defense I was in a co-op lobby with 2 real life friends... I'm way too bad at the game and nervous jumping into a live lobby to do it...
Eh, if you're in a coop lobby with you real friends then it's whatever. Just don't do it in a PvP lobby unless you want to get kicked.
1st
In terms of feedback, maybe there is also a constructive way to give it. Being a cocky, condescending douche bag is not setting the conversation up for success. An example of this is in the clip you provided to illustrate the guy who didn’t receive it well.
I had a kid who got mad cause we told him to not draw on the board and not shoot at us cause he would give away our positions and we team killed everyone
Also when someone doesn’t ready up right away try to be nicer and just give them time
Also drawing on the board on the quest 2 drawing on the board breaks the game
Also people in games with respawn enabled don’t ever res and it is awful especially when we have no more respawns
Also the people who are new might be confused so in the comp lobby don’t kick them right away tell them what to do when they leave tell them to go to the shooting range or public lobby
I absolutely plan to do the opposite of everything you say here for fun
Aw shit nvm I didn't realize this is actually cool af
This follow up comment cracked me up, thank you for that.
Tbh list kinda sounds like the regs are elitists
"Behave yourself"
"Etiquette violations"
Also you can multitask, but only around 3 things
There are some jerks in the game (like in any community), but this isn't about disciplining people or obedience. It's more about the fact that this game has an existing community with some norms, and a lot of new people don't even try to learn those norms. You're free to violate them, but be prepared for a negative response.
@@ThetaVR I just wanna have fun bro
@@skwidthecrayfsh34 That's fine, but having fun at the expense of everyone else, especially in a game with low TTL and up to 6 minutes of wait time between rounds, will not go over well. I really don't understand how this message translates into you somehow having your freedom taken away. You can do whatever you want, but there are consequences. Just like real life.
@@skwidthecrayfsh34 Pavlov is free
I really dislike that you are not supposed to express that you are new. This alone would make me behave in a way where I try to figure things out on my own and not pay attention to others for a while when I start out.
How are you inferring that I said it's not OK to express that you're new? At no point did I suggest that. The whole point I was making is that this is a challenging game which requires coordination with other people, and a lot of new players decide they'd rather just ignore everyone else. You can do your own thing in a lot of other games, but in Onward that will make the experience miserable for everyone else in the lobby.
Drunk on the game 😠 no not funny
Useful video. It's a shame that basic stuff like simple courtesy has to be explained but well done for doing so in such a calm manner. Hopefully see you on the battlefield.... :D
Agreed, I wish I didn't feel like this video was necessary. See you out there...
