    To be honest I think quick peaking isn't realistic and is more a function of how the games movement speed is too high. I don't think it leads to healthy gameplay in a game like this with players jiggling corners

    • @ThetaVR
      @ThetaVR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I'm not a fan of realism arguments. It's a game that happens to have some realistic elements. But as long as people aren't negating/exploiting the strafing speed limit and the game allows it, people need to know how to survive corner encounters. Slow peeking will get you killed, period.

    • @TheLonelyViper
      @TheLonelyViper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThetaVR Sure but I think the key is abstraction when it comes to realism. The right answer to clearing corners isnt abusing max movement speed. Its not the players fault you can - but the devs should drop that ms.

      Ironic you say that. Sitting here watching this video and admiring how similar the techniques used in this game are to real life. We use quick peaking in real life. For the exact same reason too. We do a quick peak especially when you are entering a door with a long hallway. It’s fun to read people’s different prospective on things. I am new to this game so maybe the “jiggling corners” takes away from it, but I do know we use quick peeking in real life for the same reasons. It’s not ideal but sometimes it’s the only option. Either way thanks for another great video.

    • @TheLonelyViper
      @TheLonelyViper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caseyw216 I feel you man, I think IRL quick peeks are done with leaning right? In the game, theres no wind up to full sprint so seeing someone zip out from corners or hilltops with superhuman speed/accelleration is both unrealistic and unimersive.
      We can both agree quick peeking is a thing, but it should be organic and at a speed thats both closer to real life and offers balanced gameplay that carries some risk to doing it.

    • @caseyw216
      @caseyw216 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheLonelyViper oh ya, I was not trying to say one way or the other. I am new to the game. I can’t say I have noticed that yet or not. I am sure it is irritating. I was only marveling at our two different view points. Cause with him talking about quick peeks it had me thinking to myself about the use of similar tactics in real life and I thought that was cool. Then I scroll down and I see that is something you think takes away from the game. It made me chuckle. Either way, no matter what you can’t ever truly simulate something like war. I am amazed at how close this thing is. I feel like I have watched your videos now that I am looking at your tag. Once I post this I am going to check. VTOL with drewski. 😂 that’s my guess. Watch me be wrong. 😂🤣😂🤣

    Hey theta! I think vr esports are the future and I'm currently in the very early stages of prototyping for a tactical, cqb, destruction based vr fps. Do you think that there's room for such style of game in the vr esports scene, and if so, what would you like to see in such a game? Sorry if this is the wrong place, I hope you have a great day, and thanks for the quality videos

    • @hu7cho
      @hu7cho 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reason we love Onward so much is the gunplay/realism, small TTK and the need for teamwork. If you can make a game that outdoes Onward in these aspects. You will have a successful game.

    • @ThetaVR
      @ThetaVR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Shane, thanks for stopping by. To answer your question: yes, there is for sure room in this world. Onward is the best tactical VR shooter, but the problem is it wasn't designed from the ground up as an esport. There's a big divergence between what vision the devs have for the game (heavily focused on coop/casual players) and the path needed to make it a viable esport.
      Some other VR FPS games exist, but they're all weird sort of hybrids between tactical shooters and arcadey CoD clones. If someone were to make a game with the gunplay, low TTK and overall gameplay mechanics of Onward and build it with a focus on esports (quality casting interface, practice modes, etc.) it would dominate.
      Onward's devs have dropped the ball in the esports world in many ways because there isn't any real competition. They have a de facto monopoly on tactical shooters with a competitive scene, and someone who filled the holes they've left in their game would be a serious contender.
      If you want some testers, I'm sure people in my Discord would be more than happy to help you out. Come join us: invite.gg/ThetaVR.

    09:00 totally disagree with the corner distance explanation.
    The person closer to the corner is moving faster (degrees per second) and therefore more difficult to hit.
    Of course that will not make him dominate the angle, but that is also, because he is the "conquerer" and the opponent is already set as the defender.
    So either the distance does not matter and it matters who has the corner first/ knows who is watching the angle without being known to him ( suprise effect through peeker's advantage)
    or the person closer to the corner will accomplish slipping through the kill angle and gain ground to flank
    or the person closer to the corner will accomplish retreating from the kill angle, moving back to cover.
    The person further away from the corner is in the disadvantage to accomplish slipping and retreating, so his only advantage is to hold the corner as a defender and surprise his opponent by risking it all, because he cannot retreat or slip the corner.

    You're pretty much a super soldier in this game. No normal person could run all the way across the map with an LMG, ammo and body armor then accurately full auto fire while speed walking around a corner.

    • @ThetaVR
      @ThetaVR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could say the same about the vast majority of video games. I don't personally play games for the realism, but if that's what you're looking for then Onward is not a good choice.

      Welcome to the league. Don't worry about winning in your first season, focus on getting as many reps in comps as you can and working together with your teammates. Spend more time learning that thinking about your KDRs. Do all that and you'll be fine.
