I've been asked many times for a sniping tutorial, but, as an LMG caveman, I don't know anything about it. As such, I asked Lonely Viper, one of the best snipers in the game, how he snipes. The result is the most complete, in-depth guide to sniping in Onward on the internet.

Things I have learned and whats changed since this video:
The 4x is an excellent option on medium and large maps.
The 4x is largely superior to the 12x in terms of accuracy. Shots actually land on the centre of the reticle, whereas 12x shots land below it.
DMRs are largely in a bad spot. Body armor absorbs at least 2 hits. Limbs absorb everything else. Hands block headshots. 1 hit downs are rare. 2 hit kills (not downs) are rare.
The bolt action is the only 1 hit kill/down weapon. Currently the marsoc rifle no smoothing. Making the sight picture very jittery. Not an effective weapon.
Almost all maps are too small or have an abundance of cover to make sniping worthwhile. Downfall and 2 snowpeak objectives are the only viable maps for it.
Overall, the DPS output is insufficient to make a sniper worthwhile for the vast majority of players.
I find myself preferring the volk bolt action sniper over the marsoc all the time. What's your go to alternative (for m40a5)
And are 12x still viable after finding this? I really don't like the ACOG sight lol
@@shibahyperion7635 the lack of smoothing on the marsoc one makes it to hard to use well. Pretty gun though...and 12x is totally viable but its a tool for certain circumstances

I dont agree with you on the maps I find getting on top of ac In quarantine to be very viable to cover the mid map also tanker has a few good spots and some other ones to obviously suburbia and cargo are more fast paced assault rifle shotgun SMG type maps. Also anybody who's thinking about it drones are hugely useless maybe of in a later update you can put c4 on it it might be useful better off with smokes to help your team (but you should get AP and Body Armor over equipment) also bolt actions are powerful but a find the g3 and marson variant to be very powerful as its semi and full auto and with ap full auto can do some crazy shit. But for you wannabe snipers find your style sniping is fun and an awesome thing when you can do it most important thing is to have fun
Theta, if you ever think 600 subs is small, just remember thats almost Onward’s entire playerbase.

Seems to check out. Whenever I play there's only two lobbies in comp or public going at a time.
Or else you have to host and hope someone joins your brand new lobby.
And at least half the people playing seem to be less than 10 years old during the day time...
Might need to join a team to access the good players and challenging matches.

I'm new to vr and onward, but one thing I learned while playing Airsoft from my older brother who has been in the military is that you can use both eyes to your advantage while using a sight. For example, my red dot sight had one removable cover at each end, I usually kept the front one on to not get spotted. You can use your left eye to line up the dot to your target.
I found that this works great for snipers In vr as well. I use the 12x scope and keep both eyes open and with some practice you can use your left eye to focus on the battlefield. The scope should then work as an "overlay" in your vision and you can use it as a regular sight. It's also great for acquiring targets, I use my left eye to get the enemy in the sight and then shift to right eye for more accurate adjustments. It's pretty cool.
As Viper alludes to in the video, the shooting part of sniping isn't the hard part. Too many people obsess over their shooting mechanics without first thinking about how to support their teammates by giving good callouts, moving at a decent pace, positioning properly, etc. If you're new, then I suggest you don't worry too much about being the best shot and instead focus on the fundamentals first.
Yep! This is totally true. Hard skill to maste but worth it!
this is some thing i do in pavlov, where everything is more fast paced, i have both eyes open and line up the crosshair while being able to see my surroundings, its really useful

Hey Theta, could you do a video that talks about the concept of angles? It is a concept I hear talked about basically whenever tactics are discussed, but I don't really know how to fight, plan, or coordinate with my team using the concept of angles. Its almost impossible to find resources on the matter, there are no relevant sites on google that discuss it, and no videos that talk about it as far as I know. I also just want to say that I really appreciate what you are doing with these videos. The quality is really good, even when the video only gets 80 likes (so far), and the content is immensely helpful.

Angles are lines of sight on areas.
Optimal angles are usually ones which offer cover, while giving a tight FOV/line of fire on an area that has strategic value.
E.g. watching a likely path the attacking team will take to reach the objective, but concealing yourself so that you're focused on a section they may have to cross that gives them no cover.
The idea is to hold a position which offers the greatest combat advantage. Its a very meta discussion, since it depends on the given map and what the current behaviour patterns are. There are common spots on maps for obvious reasons that you can learn by watching casts and playing the game. Much of the competitve play then comes from planning for and defeating these defensive positions.
Theta is probably going to do a killer video on it ^^

Fun little tip, on marsoc (don’t know about volk) 4x and 12x allows you to use your scope, just have to look under the scope
On volk I mostly use a AK12 with a Holographic sight

A good idea is to suppress your sniper, It may be worth lots of points, but it is useful for hiding where you shot from.
I generally find it a little difficult at times to keep my aim steady, which really affects my gameplay. I wasn’t sure if this was something that could be worked on with a lot of practise in the shooting range, but most people I talk to recommend a gun stock. I use the Oculus Quest 2, which was a gift from a relative - there would be no way in hell I would spend the amounts of money sellers ask for a vr gun stock, so I feel like I’m at a big disadvantage in the game compared to those who are lucky enough to have a stock - so for me, the game isn’t entirely skill - 1 on 1, face to face fights for me are usually concluded when the opponent has a stock and I do not. Would you say any amount of practice will ever be enough to get on the same level as someone with a stock or no?
Absolutely. I was a freehander for half of my competitive career and many skilled players freehand as well. It's a matter of practice and understanding the tradeoffs for both styles.

with the bipod thing: the point of the sniper is to camp. this game favors camping. watching. waiting. the point of the bipod is to find a spot, shoot someone, and then move to a different spot before they find out you were even there. if they even notice you leaving they will camp every exit that building has. if they have no idea where you are, they won't know where to look for you.
I have done a lot of sniping lately and I use a 2x no offense if you hate it. I don't use a gun stock. However I will say I've gotten pretty good. I think the most important rule to my personal style of sniping is keeping your cool. Manage yourself and keep yourself very calm and know your weaknesses. I play more of a scout sniper role. I like to be mid range and flank often. I like to pick off a target and abuse the enemies tablet.
Saying you want to snipe like Viper is basically saying you want to lose

Viper is a tier one league player who managed to also get over 250.000 subscribers doing his passion back when VR content still consisted out of wave shooters and looking up anime girl skirts. Come back when you accomplish a similar thing if you want to be making statements like 'ripping off'.
Personally I’m a sharpshooting type of sniper and love to hit a target very far away and stay at a main location because if you move to much you die so from me to you use the bipod 12 x and the sv98 very solid gun and try to hit the 600 meter target at the range. Shoot behind the bags and lay down and when you hit that target the dopemien will hit like a truck so try my style it’s boring until you hit your shot

its a real life thing cause you zoomed in to the target, the target is zoomed in so the bullet drop will appear to be more great but in reality it is the same, it is just magnified cause you zoomed into the target more

My favorite thing to do in Onward is just trying to befriend an enemy, get close to them and thier squad and then detonate the C4 on my chest

Trigger deadzone = trigger break great way to describe it but look up the actual term in firearms training might help as well
I'll let Viper speak for his exact intent, but when talking about game controllers and how different buttons/axes react to input the term is deadzone. So even though it might be more accurate to say trigger break if we're talking about real guns, in this case I believe he was correct.

As a Onward sniper, And kinda decent in it, I try to use bipods, and set up in hills alot. So i get the Stock, or stick with bipods?

The bullet hit under the center of the sight because the barrel is below it and in onward the sights aren't corrected

That was a bug that's been fixed since the release of the video.

I personally use a Bowk stock (BowkVR.com), but there are plenty of DIY options and lower tier brands if you look around.

@@faceofthemoment4571 VR games look different for a few reasons. First of all, everything has to be rendered twice (once for each eye). Secondly, it has to be rendered for the whole 360 degrees at all times. They're also still not to a point where AAA studios are willing to develop much in VR, so it's always small teams trying their best to make something presentable. Pancake games look much nicer because they don't have to do either of these things - the environment is rendered once and most engines only render what's directly in your view. So the detail you see in VR while watching it outside the headset isn't great. But if you put on the headset and experience what it's like to be within the game, you will never go back to pancake games.

I don't play any VR (yet) but I thought this might still help a bit I know I gotta stop second guessing myself on shots but that fucking murphys law shit is a curse for me, any game I play the moment I look away from a spot someone walks up and kills me from right there so often I have given up sniping in my most played games.
I play Destiny 2 mainly but I won't snipe in that until they bring back No Land Beyond then I'll try again I was always better with iron sights.
Go get yourself a Quest or Quest 2 and jump into VR, dude! Gunplay in Onward is so much more fun than mouse and keyboard.
@@ThetaVR I would love to trust me but gotta save up for a better computer before I even go for VR (I'm looking forward to my aim being more controlled though), I pretty much just started using PC more than my console so I'm still learning mouse even.
On an unrelated note anyone else that switched between mouse and controller notice hip-fire seems more accurate with mouse but ADS seems more accurate with controller?, my friends didn't notice that till I mentioned it and now they hate me for it lol.

Bruh this is impossible. I don't want to rake out extra cash on a stock, but after 2 hours of making a homemade stock which barley even works I might. Is it possible to be subpar at sniping without a stock?
It's very, very hard. The scopes are not easy to use without a stable platform. There are some casual marksman players who do OK in pubs without a stock, but I've never seen or heard of anyone sniping well in real competition without one.
Yes - but you could also try the vitrual stock in the game settings and bipods are also an option. There is of course another path....lots of practice :D
