    so when apple makes their phone waterproof it becomes a requirement
    but when sony, samsung or anyone else does it's just a plus.

    • @AaronCrawford

      U caught that too?

    • @Formulka
      @Formulka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      Usually when Apple implements something it's a mature technology and years in other products so it kind of makes sense that by now it should be a standard feature.

      Mohamed Hijazi so true

    • @jsutton241
      @jsutton241 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Karn he's just simply saying maturing as a standard feature. That's all. Select android phones have been waterproofing for years now. But it seems now that the iPhone has done it, it's a must in every smartphone now.

    • @capricornus993
      @capricornus993 8 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Apple's always late to the party! So if apple's doing something now, it means it became a requirement long before that. 😏

    1:56 "I'm getting like 2 hours more than I get on iPhone... "
    What kind of battery review is that

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Proven how? And by whom? This is literally one of the first Pixel reviews to hit the Internet and most in-depth reviewers haven't had the phone for more than 2 weeks (including MKBHD). So I'm gonna need a source on that "proof", buddy.

    • @cjpp78ytube
      @cjpp78ytube 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      the verge has never been known to be biased in favor of android. If they're gushing over an android device, must be that they're really feeling it.
      This is the type of impression i hoped the phone would have on reviewers. now I really want one

    • @eldinh9842
      @eldinh9842 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So still just a meaning and not a fact. Just wait untill real tests come out and not just underbelly feelings.

    • @GreatWalker
      @GreatWalker 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Jonathan Willis - You chose the word "proven" very poorly. Pixel XL has a battery capacity of 3450 mAh and 7 Plus has a capacity of 2900 mAh. So the intuition is that Pixel XL has the better battery life, which has been confirmed by all reviews I have seen this far.

      yes, but pixel doesn't deliver that...with 8. how much mm thick, Pixel(not XL) got worse capacity than Galaxy S7 (while it's less thick and less big)

    • @DevinAK49
      @DevinAK49 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How is this the first phone google made? That can't be accurate. Are you disregarding all 8 previous ones?

    • @TheVerge
      @TheVerge  8 ปีที่แล้ว +154

      Unlike the Nexus line, which involved hardware partnerships with LG, Samsung, Huawei, etc., this is the first phone billed as "made by Google" inside and out.

    • @SeeinHyrule
      @SeeinHyrule 8 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Douglas but still built in htc factories by htc employees under contract to Google.... so same deal as Nexus, just htc doesn't get to stamp it's logo on

    • @areenkhachadouri7754
      @areenkhachadouri7754 8 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Alex Harvey that doesn't matter. the design is completely up to google. it's like Apple using Foxconn to build their hardware. apple still has their blueprints

    • @JenningHo
      @JenningHo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @Alex Harvey That's not how Nexus partnership works. OEMs gets to pitch their design to Google and Google picks the hardware partner based the pitched designs, then have their input on it. Google got really opinionated at the latest iteration of Nexus phones (5X and 6P), but never 100% Google inside out. Pixel is 100% Google inside out, HTC's role in the Pixel is akin to Foxconn to iPhone, a manufacturer who builds the phone with 0 input on the matter.

      Douglas It's google designed and branded, Nexus was not hardware designed by google.

    • @tecwzrd

      He covered everything EXCEPT that the Pixel doesn't have a SD card! Google charges $100 more to go from 32GB to $128GB and it's inexcusable for today's smartphones to not include it. Shooting at 4K 30FPS takes up 375MB-400MB of space per minute! Sure Google gives you unlimited space on the cloud but it still has to be stored on the phone before upload.

      Stuart Vanlint I don't have any personal opinions on the phone seeing as I've never used one but between these two looks at the phone,one is realistic and the other is a Google promotion. I don't disagree with the phone being great,but in the case someone were to just completely go off of this,I think it's a little over the top.

      Hector Älfvåg what?

    • @hector338
      @hector338 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And neither did I say they have. I'm talking about specific design choices, like the exact same treatment of the aluminium, the same white stripes along the edges, close to identical rounding of the corners, etc. How do you guys not see the obvious theft of design?
      This is in no way specific to these brands, by the way. This industry seems to be feeding off of borderline plagiarism/definite plagiarism, and it's been going on for a while, too.

    • @hector338

    Such a bad review....
    Firstly the Pixel isn't the first phone made by google , just like every single nexus phone, Google makes the calls but third parties are the ones responsible for manufacturing and making of the phone, in this case HTC, before LG and Huawei.
    Secondly, saying this is the best android phone is like having a bag of jelly beans and saying "the blue one is the best jelly bean", different consumers have different tastes and the LG V20 (where is the review on that?) for example has the best DAC ever on a phone, has removable battery, a second screen, dual backcameras etc. basically features that might not interest you but would be the decisive choice for other users.
    And lastly, this is hardly a review, this is in no way objective but mostly subjective and feels like very little investigation was put into it. So much more could be said about the new android N that is only now available for testing, plus the camera, you showed no camera shots (review?)
    There is so much to say but I guess this is what one would expect from the verge anyway

      Potato Lord This is normal. They had received the phone earlier than normal consumers for them to review. But manufacturers, in this case Google, set a date and time of when they are allowed to reveal their videos about the phone. About one hour ago was the date and time. They've made their videos prior to the set time. It's just common sense that they release it as soon as they are allowed to release their videos.

      I'm not sure all of the sudden waterproof is the necessity of all phones. Frankly, I don't go swimming with my phone, bathe with my phone. The occasional splash or sweat during workout is perfectly fine for me. So while sure water resistant is a plus but certainly not a deal breaker by any means.

    • @thecreepermaster12
      @thecreepermaster12 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Osman Ali Khan I rather get the features of touchwiz, i´m sick and tired of stock android due to it´s lack of functionality and features, at least out of the box. But you know what? opinions, you may like "Stock android" or touchwiz.However, objectibly speaking the S7 has more features and is a more complete phone with a similar if not (due to the fact that it has been out for 6 month) price tag.

    • @-.Oz.-
      @-.Oz.- 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ROURKE That's why I mentioned the One Plus 3. Oxygen OS has more features than Touchwiz without all the clutter. Samsung could have easily made a sleek UI without compromising the features, but efficient UI design has been Samsung's weak point since the og Galaxy S. I'm not saying TW is bad because it has so many features, I'm saying it's bad because those features are not implemented in an easy to use way or present themselves in the infinitely long settings list. And then Samsung goes and says "We don't want to confuse our users so we are removing adoptable storage", what a joke.

    • @-.Oz.-
      @-.Oz.- 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ROURKE I guess those features are important to you, btw multitasking is on every Android 7.0 phone and works with almost every app rather than a select few. Also, the worst part about using a Samsung phones is updates. The S6 got Marshmallow 6 months after it was released, despite Google releasing previews to help devs and everything. Android updates make noticeable differences, especially when it comes to speed. Other OEM's take forever to update too, but Samsung is the worst offender, I mean 6 months?

    I don't like the way at 1:06 the verge implied that samsung phones don't feel like smartphones (I think samsung's latest phones are the best looking phones ever made). I understand that the pixel is the most appealing android phone to iphone users, but the verge need to understand that the majority of people aren't iphone users. The guy keeps saying how it 'feels like an iphone' and 'feels normal', as if the iphone is the be all and end of smartphones. They were a couple years ago, but not in 2016

    • @finlaymcewan
      @finlaymcewan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I don't care if you all choose to buy iPhones either. I'm just saying there are people who will just buy whatever somebody tells them is best, and the verge is telling everyone that iPhones are the best. Like you said, its personal preference; I think the verge need to acknowledge the fact that there are other phones that are on the same level as the iPhone. To me, this review says 'The pixel is a great phone, even competitive with the iPhone'. The average consumer interprets that as 'the iPhone is still the best smartphone', which it might not be for their needs.

    • @enriques.5114
      @enriques.5114 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      because its still the best phone duhhhh what other smartphone sells as many as an iPhone? plus google is going the apple way with these pixel phones .

    • @finlaymcewan
      @finlaymcewan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Enrique S. Just because a phone sells well doesn't mean it's the best. Normally it would, but apple is an interesting case. I believe that people buy iPhones because of its phenomenal research reputation. The iPhone was the best phone you could buy for many years. However, in the last few years other phones have become very competitive, maybe even better than the iPhone. People like Samsung are constantly innovating, with features such as curved screens, fingerprint scanners, waterproofing and amoled technology. Apple hasn't brought anything big to the table in a long time.
      The iPhone may be the easiest phone to use, and that's great, but it's almost certainly not the best phone anymore

    • @finlaymcewan
      @finlaymcewan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** Copying another phone isn't innovation. Apple weren't the first to do fingerprint scanning or waterproofing. The pixel doesn't have 3D touch. Although technically speaking huawei released a 3D touch phone first, I'm guessing apple still had that idea independently, so I'll give them that. Even then though, 3D touch hasn't turned out to be the big revolution apple hoped it would be.
      If apple release a phone with no bezels whatsoever (including top and bottom), that would be amazing. But thin bezels on the sides is nothing new. The note 7, say what you will about that phone, had nearly no bezels on the sides and there are phones from asian companies with even thinner side bezels already (I'm thinking ZTE nubai Z11 or Sharp aquos crystal).
      OLED still needs time to flatten out its issua, such as screen burn-in, but it is clearly ahead of LCD technology. Bolder colours, deeper blacks, and power savings. Let's not get started on the fact the 2016 iPhone has a 750p screen.
      I agree the pixel is nothing special on its own, even if it stands for the future of android. But the iPhone 7 is absolutely nothing special either. Sure, it's the fastest phone you can buy right now, but that isn't innovation, that's expected.
      One last thing, rumours for phones like the iphone 8 or galaxy s8 this far in advance are almost always exaggerated. Current rumours for the s8 show a 30mp camera, which is clearly BS. iPhone rumours ALWAYS say the next iphone will have an edgeless screen, you get desensitised to it after a while.

      anon Google had more control on the phone than Nexus, they designed Pixel from hardware to software. HTC simply manufactured it. It's similar to how Apple designed the iPhone chip and Samsung manufactured it. It is like Samsung made it but they can't use it and thus HTC cannot use the same design.

    • @AnontheGOAT

      Don't Ask Productions Google didn't really "make" the Nexus phones. They just partnered with another company like Huawei or Motorola or Samsung or LG and they basically designed and made the phone. The Pixel is actually designed by Google and HTC is only responsible for manufacturing the phones, Google designed the Pixels so the hardware actually acts seamless with their software

    • @AnontheGOAT
      @AnontheGOAT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jstyledipset well I'd say that their design isn't that independent. You can clearly see that the borrowed a lot of design cues from the HTC 10. So I don't think that they fully designed it on their own.

      nobody said it was the best apart from maybe this guy the design is meh and the specs are pretty average apart from the 821 but for the first ever pixel phone it's decent

      Dan K and yes, it is arguably the best Android phone ever made, as far as performance/ease of use. Which is all that really matters, anyone that says otherwise has no business talking shop about phones.

    Thing is if you will get it trough a network carrier you will still have the update problem and the bloated software and the carrier logo.

    • @TheVerge
      @TheVerge  8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Here's Verizon's statement on updates and bloatware: "First and foremost, all operating system and security updates to the Pixel devices will happen in partnership with Google. In other words, when Google releases an update, Verizon phones will receive the same update at the same time (much like iOS updates). Verizon will not stand in the way of any major updates and users will get all updates at the same time as Google. Also, the Verizon version of the Google Pixel is carrier unlocked, so you can use it where ever you like. Finally, we have three apps pre-installed on the phone Go90, My Verizon (which is your account management tool) and Verizon Messages (your messaging app). As you noted, all three can easily be uninstalled by the user."

    In TechnoBuffalo's review, the reviewer said that he had to install an external cell phone antenna at his house using Verizon because his Galaxy 7 Edge couldn't keep a signal. The Pixel had 3 bars without using the external antenna. The glass is on the back for a reason.

    Great review, the verge is really the best. I don't know, I like the Pixel but I think that's just because I like iPhones, and it seems like Google copied a lot about the iPhone. The bezels, Touch ID, home button, force touch (long touch). The google phone puts me off because it doesn't feel original - it feels like a copy cat.

    No dual lense camera, no waterproofing, no 3d touch, no headphones in the box and frankly - poor design. Same price as the iPhone. If this thing had been announced by Apple, people would have roasted it. But hey, it's made by Google so it's "great".

      ***** Well those things may be important to you but I really don't think they are to most, last time I went for a swim I left my phone out of it. Design is function over form sure. But seems like the experience of hardware and software as a whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. Pretty much all reviews are glowing. If you don't like it there's plenty of options out there. Personally I was tempted with the moto z or LG v20 but impatience got the better of me and I pulled the trigger on this. But I've always loved Nexus phones/Moto x EZ

    • @crasherball
      @crasherball 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Booth no, thats a bad equivalency. google has already stated years ago why they don't want sd-card slots on their phones, because they are a bad user-experience.
      sd-cards just dont increase the storage, they will create another separate storage on the phone.
      it's a bad design decision, because it will remove the file-abstraction-layer. the average user won't know if they saved a file on the internal storage or the sd-card

    • @CyborgSodaCollects
      @CyborgSodaCollects 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      crasherball ok, but again it's feature that adds alot of life and value to your device. Would you not agree? Perhaps there is a way to overcome the shortcomings of the format?

    Brilliant review, love how you test it in the real world and not some 20-30 minute geek review...
    Jury for me on the Google Pixel is still out. Just think the price is a little crazy, when you have brilliant phones like the OnePlus3 available for nearly half the price.
    While my Nexus 6 continues to get updates, likely to stick with this bad boy! Love the AMOLED screen and front facing speakers. Android 7 (Nougat) is still buttery smooth!
    Got the phone for a crazy price, just by holding out for 9 months after release.
    I wonder if the Pixel will drop in price over time, or retain its prices like iPhone's?!
