iphone 7's camera is filtered and the Pixel's natural true to eye. both are great but i prefer the Pixel because it's natural coloured so you can edit later on.
Saket Gillurkar All the cameras are good. I personally like Pixel and iPhone camera because of more accurate colors. It helps to get the best result when editing and even when applying filters in Instagram and other apps as the colors are not changed like Samsung's Camera.

Funny how when HTC introduced dual cameras Ifans called it a Gimmick. The iphone is almost a HTC phone, let's see what they borrowed from them so far that I know of. Dual camera, Zoe, live pictures, all metal build, antenna bands, recent app layout. I'll use my girls Iphone and find some more stuff I'm sure.

Using $500 headphones I hear the pixel has a much better audio quality. The pixel has a much richer and clearer microphone and I believe it also supports EQ.
Republic Thunderstreak ok. Just looked it up and both record in mono audio but the pixel is capable of stereo recording. I wasn't paying attention too much to the audio so I can't really comment on audio but the pixel might have better audio considering its capable of stereo.

Actually, the pixel over-saturates some shots and misrepresents the colors. That is the one area the iPhone seems to still be the strongest contender in. However, yes, in some cases, the pixel does represent the lighting better and it does seem to get a wider range in its capture.
Just because a picture is brighter doesn't mean it's better. For example, the pic he took of that stone wall, the iPhone was a brighter shot but the sky was so blown out that the Pixel hands down took the nicer shot. Or on the pic he took of the street sign, the iPhone was slightly brighter but the blacks were a noisy mess.
You dumb? Low light crisp on iPhone and if you ever want to record with fast movement then poop with Pixel. They both have strengths and weaknesses. Not that I give a shit about low light since I'd just use flash, and I never run/record.... Pixel 100% for me, BUT STILL, it's not 100% won.
The stabilization on Pixel looks good when moving slowly but when running iPhone looks more stable. Google's HDR is definitely the best. I loved both the cameras. Apple needs to step up its HDR game.
Thanks again for another in depth review. The Pixel clearly has a better rear and front camera. I have been an iPhone user for the last 8 years, apart from a one week trial with the LG G2 a couple years ago. I am looking to upgrade my iPhone 6 Plus and really think Android phones have finally overtaken my beloved iPhones. Quad HD displays have been on my wish list for a while and now the cameras are better to? The audio quality in the video recording was also sub par in the iPhone 7 as well. Apple isn't leaving me much choice here but to make the switch to Android. My only other option is to wait until next year and see if the Cupertino kids finally decide to catch up. I am also really interested in the Moto Z Force Droid. Anyone have any thoughts on the Z Force camera and display?

Wow, didn't expect the Pixel to have such a great camera. This is going to make my decision harder :/ I do however prefer the iPhone's lens blur as opposed to the Pixel's. Overall, both have great camera but I think the Pixel definitely has the edge, depending of course what kind of photos you want to be taking and whether or not you want to take advantage of the iPhone's telephoto lens

Good video, both very good cameras, Pixel was not great in your running section of the video recording, both strong in different areas, neither quite as good as the S7 Edge in low light, but nothing wrong with either cameras. However in more situations I can see problems with EIS on the Pixel. There's a reason every flagship OEM dropped it. Finally I wish you wouldn't call the secondary camera on the iPhone 7 plus a telephoto lens, it is not a telephoto lens, just a small aperture lens with fixed zoom. Ask any photographer the definition of what is a telephoto lens.

The sony xz using 5 axis eis performs far better than the s7 and iphone 7 in image stabilization alone, even during sharp shakes such as walking down stairs. If only sony used a better sensor...
Pixel won! SuperSaf great unbiased review. It's funny how people are saying that the Pixel & Pixel XL are to pricey!? Remember people the Nexus 6P & 5x were mid range phone, while other manufacture were on 8MP the Nexus series was on 5MP! Of course the Nexus phone will be cheaper because they were a generation (if you will) behind and maximize it.
To be honest, except from a couple of shots where I'd give the edge to the Pixel XL, I think that the iPhone camera is better. I didn't like the low light shots on the XL, too much noise and extremely dark. They were much sharper and balanced on the iPhone and the stabilisation was better on the iPhone as well. As most phones can take brilliant pics in daylight, the low light capabilities really make the difference, so iPhone 7 hands down!
Most of the rest can be edited to preference by settings on both. The apple looks like it has a filter on it for gamma bad.... The pictures never really look like the area in vibrant natural environments... Either way you can change it in settings...

Great video man! I love my iPhone 7 Plus, but the Pixel seems to be an absolutely fantastic allround smartphone. None of that "throw everything against the wall and see what sticks"-strategy and reliance on gimmicks that so many other Android flagships have. Just great, comfortable design and a focus on the absolute best performance and user experience possible. The Pixel doesn't have the most eyecatching design, isn't the thinnest, doesn't use exotic materials, has no "unique" selling points like clip on peripherals, wireless charging, fancy lenses, the highest resolution screen or the biggest battery.. Yet it is the most consistent, well performing Android smartphone on the market right now. Great screen, great feel in the hand, great build quality, good battery life, good audio, fantastic camera. If it weren't for the fact that I'm too invested in the iOS ecosystem to switch my daily driver, this would definitely be at the top of my list. Good job Google!
The audio quality differences come from volume differences and not as much from tone issues I think. Also, I thought the video walking and running was brighter with better color on the iPhone. Some of the other pictures were definitely won by the pixel with deeper tones and not as washed out backgrounds. As for the zoom speed...the iPhone 7 is slower than the pixel but I liked the deeper colors and definitely the low light pictures.

Pixel has an overly dark image and tends to clip the blacks. Just look at the photos of his beard, barely any detail even visible. And would you call the photo at 5:05 more washed out for the iPhone or the Pixel? Yeah, that's what I thought.
I just want to see a speed test. Honestly who looks at someone's instagram and thinks....this picture could have been a bit sharper...we just double tap and move on. lol. For the every day user, as long as the picture looks good enough to post, it's a good camera. I like photography. But I use my DSLR for that. Just saying.

A good comparison! I have the 7 plus and while I could feel the primitive psychological biases that lead to defensive fanboysim, I must say I am impressed with both camera's. The pixel has better sound by a long shot I felt. Better selfie too, the iPhone has never had a great selfie camera and sure it's improved a lot with the 7 it still is lacking imo. The pictures on the pixel including selfie seemed a bit darker so the dynamic range seemed better compared to the brighter 7 plus but still slightly better. I think both are very impressive pieces of tech in the camera department. I prefer the Apple ecosystem over the Android one so I have the 7 plus. Now we can shoot RAW it's practically perfect for me. Lest not forget - better photographic equipment =/= better photographs. Especially for those of us who consider photography a passion and hobby, the camera is a tool and a better tool while useful won't make you a better photographer unless you know how to use it. I'm thankful we have corporate competition driving innovation but I made photos on the iPhone 4 that I still today am impressed with and the 4 has a comparatively rubbish camera. The pixel has a slight edge here in most aspects I must say but my psychological makeup tries to find reason to put the pixel down to try and justify me buying the iPhone (this is what fanboysim and it happens everywhere) but the reality is that I will still make photos (and have) that I will treasure for years to come on my 7 plus and so will you on the device of your choice.
You seem quite biased against the iPhone is the 5:05 photo comparison. You said the Pixel "seems to be doing a little bit better bringing out those shadows" when in reality it simply has less contrast than the iPhone, as well as less vibrant color, but you didn't even mention that point. Except when you got to the next photo and the Pixel was more vibrant so then you mentioned it. Anyone can see that the 7 Plus took the better image here. You also didn't point out that the Pixel was clipping the dark areas, and some of those HDR shots looked horrendous and artificial, like this one: 3:32.

Jose T It was a bit better with small movements but struggled with fast and big movements. But the main reason optical image stabilization is better is for photos. Digital image stabilization only works for videos.

Nobody seems to be getting this comparison, because many are like "the Pixels camera is so much better. iPhone camera sucks." Lets make something clear: Both have amazing cameras and shoot great photos and videos and with none of them you'd be disappointed when it comes to camera. This test showed snapshots, so just holding up the camera and taking the picture. So what happens is that the image processor takes all the RAW data, makes adjustment and compresses it to a JPEG. And in this case I have to say, in most cases I preferred the results of the Pixel over the ones of the iPhone. Not in all cases though. So things like colors, saturation, contrast, brightness, blacks and whites, and so on, are software related... camera brings the data and software compresses it to a JPEG with some adjustments. Of course the data coming from the actual camera matters, but you can't see that when comparing photos in this way. So basically it's about preference if you like one over the other when it comes to the final processed JPEG. Now... Some cases really showed that it wasn't just the process which made the image look better, but the camera itself really performed better in the Pixel in these few cases. So yes, in some cases the Pixel camera is better then the iPhone camera. BUT you have to keep in mind that these are minor differences and you're comparing two great cameras... compare these two to other smartphones and you would see how close together the iPhone 7 and Pixel actually are. So only looking at the actual camera performance, just to mention a few points: The Pixel has better dynamic range in most cases. The iPhone on the other hand catches more details in lowlight, due to Optical image stabilization (lower shutter speed means lower ISO, which is great). So none of the cameras here "suck", like many are saying about the iPhones camera. Actually both cameras are impressive. When comparing this phones overall, the camera isn't an aspect where you would prefer one phone over the other because like i said both are amazing and have their strengths and when one is better in a case, the difference isn't too big. Like i mentioned before, these are snapshots compressed to a JPEG. When you would shoot RAW (like I do, as a photographer) you would have all RAW data available to adjust the photo to your likes and get the most out of it. So if we would compare these cameras by shooting RAW and getting the most out of them, we could really see how the cameras itself perform. But of course I know, that doesn't matter for most people, because they don't shoot RAW and edit photos... I just wanted to mention it, because that is the way you get the most out of a camera instead of letting the software decide for you. So yeah actually importance in smartphones isn't the camera itself but how well the image gets processed. Both do a great job there. Finally, the iPhone 7 Plus has a second, telephoto, lens. This doesn't just give you the ability to zoom (in good light) but also to get another perspective which is great for portraits and such. Telephoto compresses the background more, which gives the image another perspective. So in some cases I would stand further away and zoom in, to get the image i want. This feature for me is more important than getting slightly better dynamic range and whatever. But really if you don't understand much about photography, this second lens really isn't gonna do more than just zoom, which isn't really that necessary for most people.

But this video is about smartphone cameras and many judge that the iPhone (at least the camera of it) sucks based on what he said and showed in this video. So I wanted to make things a bit clearer. Honestly I don't really get why everyone says that the pixel is way better! Yes the front facing camera is a lot better but the rear camera really only looks better when you need to use hdr! For video I'd still prefer the more natural look of the iPhone, Low light is better on the iPhone, the flash is better on the pixel and the rest comes down to personal preference!

Actually, the pixel over-saturates some shots and misrepresents the colors. That is the one area the iPhone seems to still be the strongest contender in. However, yes, in some cases, the pixel does represent the lighting better and it does seem to get a wider range in its capture.

Just because a picture is brighter doesn't mean it's better. For example, the pic he took of that stone wall, the iPhone was a brighter shot but the sky was so blown out that the Pixel hands down took the nicer shot. Or on the pic he took of the street sign, the iPhone was slightly brighter but the blacks were a noisy mess.

You dumb? Low light crisp on iPhone and if you ever want to record with fast movement then poop with Pixel. They both have strengths and weaknesses. Not that I give a shit about low light since I'd just use flash, and I never run/record.... Pixel 100% for me, BUT STILL, it's not 100% won.

The stabilization on Pixel looks good when moving slowly but when running iPhone looks more stable. Google's HDR is definitely the best. I loved both the cameras. Apple needs to step up its HDR game.

Thanks again for another in depth review. The Pixel clearly has a better rear and front camera. I have been an iPhone user for the last 8 years, apart from a one week trial with the LG G2 a couple years ago. I am looking to upgrade my iPhone 6 Plus and really think Android phones have finally overtaken my beloved iPhones. Quad HD displays have been on my wish list for a while and now the cameras are better to? The audio quality in the video recording was also sub par in the iPhone 7 as well. Apple isn't leaving me much choice here but to make the switch to Android. My only other option is to wait until next year and see if the Cupertino kids finally decide to catch up. I am also really interested in the Moto Z Force Droid. Anyone have any thoughts on the Z Force camera and display?

Wow, didn't expect the Pixel to have such a great camera. This is going to make my decision harder :/ I do however prefer the iPhone's lens blur as opposed to the Pixel's. Overall, both have great camera but I think the Pixel definitely has the edge, depending of course what kind of photos you want to be taking and whether or not you want to take advantage of the iPhone's telephoto lens

Good video, both very good cameras, Pixel was not great in your running section of the video recording, both strong in different areas, neither quite as good as the S7 Edge in low light, but nothing wrong with either cameras. However in more situations I can see problems with EIS on the Pixel. There's a reason every flagship OEM dropped it. Finally I wish you wouldn't call the secondary camera on the iPhone 7 plus a telephoto lens, it is not a telephoto lens, just a small aperture lens with fixed zoom. Ask any photographer the definition of what is a telephoto lens.
I see your point! Technicaly the 28mm would be a wide angle and the 56mm would be a normal focal length since telephoto only starts at 135mm.

Pixel won! SuperSaf great unbiased review. It's funny how people are saying that the Pixel & Pixel XL are to pricey!? Remember people the Nexus 6P & 5x were mid range phone, while other manufacture were on 8MP the Nexus series was on 5MP! Of course the Nexus phone will be cheaper because they were a generation (if you will) behind and maximize it.

To be honest, except from a couple of shots where I'd give the edge to the Pixel XL, I think that the iPhone camera is better. I didn't like the low light shots on the XL, too much noise and extremely dark. They were much sharper and balanced on the iPhone and the stabilisation was better on the iPhone as well.
As most phones can take brilliant pics in daylight, the low light capabilities really make the difference, so iPhone 7 hands down!

Most of the rest can be edited to preference by settings on both. The apple looks like it has a filter on it for gamma bad.... The pictures never really look like the area in vibrant natural environments... Either way you can change it in settings...

Great video man! I love my iPhone 7 Plus, but the Pixel seems to be an absolutely fantastic allround smartphone. None of that "throw everything against the wall and see what sticks"-strategy and reliance on gimmicks that so many other Android flagships have. Just great, comfortable design and a focus on the absolute best performance and user experience possible.
The Pixel doesn't have the most eyecatching design, isn't the thinnest, doesn't use exotic materials, has no "unique" selling points like clip on peripherals, wireless charging, fancy lenses, the highest resolution screen or the biggest battery.. Yet it is the most consistent, well performing Android smartphone on the market right now. Great screen, great feel in the hand, great build quality, good battery life, good audio, fantastic camera. If it weren't for the fact that I'm too invested in the iOS ecosystem to switch my daily driver, this would definitely be at the top of my list.

The audio quality differences come from volume differences and not as much from tone issues I think. Also, I thought the video walking and running was brighter with better color on the iPhone. Some of the other pictures were definitely won by the pixel with deeper tones and not as washed out backgrounds. As for the zoom speed...the iPhone 7 is slower than the pixel but I liked the deeper colors and definitely the low light pictures.

Pixel has an overly dark image and tends to clip the blacks. Just look at the photos of his beard, barely any detail even visible. And would you call the photo at 5:05 more washed out for the iPhone or the Pixel? Yeah, that's what I thought.
I just want to see a speed test. Honestly who looks at someone's instagram and thinks....this picture could have been a bit sharper...we just double tap and move on. lol. For the every day user, as long as the picture looks good enough to post, it's a good camera. I like photography. But I use my DSLR for that. Just saying.

A good comparison! I have the 7 plus and while I could feel the primitive psychological biases that lead to defensive fanboysim, I must say I am impressed with both camera's. The pixel has better sound by a long shot I felt. Better selfie too, the iPhone has never had a great selfie camera and sure it's improved a lot with the 7 it still is lacking imo. The pictures on the pixel including selfie seemed a bit darker so the dynamic range seemed better compared to the brighter 7 plus but still slightly better.
I think both are very impressive pieces of tech in the camera department. I prefer the Apple ecosystem over the Android one so I have the 7 plus. Now we can shoot RAW it's practically perfect for me.
Lest not forget - better photographic equipment =/= better photographs. Especially for those of us who consider photography a passion and hobby, the camera is a tool and a better tool while useful won't make you a better photographer unless you know how to use it. I'm thankful we have corporate competition driving innovation but I made photos on the iPhone 4 that I still today am impressed with and the 4 has a comparatively rubbish camera. The pixel has a slight edge here in most aspects I must say but my psychological makeup tries to find reason to put the pixel down to try and justify me buying the iPhone (this is what fanboysim and it happens everywhere) but the reality is that I will still make photos (and have) that I will treasure for years to come on my 7 plus and so will you on the device of your choice.
You seem quite biased against the iPhone is the 5:05 photo comparison. You said the Pixel "seems to be doing a little bit better bringing out those shadows" when in reality it simply has less contrast than the iPhone, as well as less vibrant color, but you didn't even mention that point. Except when you got to the next photo and the Pixel was more vibrant so then you mentioned it. Anyone can see that the 7 Plus took the better image here. You also didn't point out that the Pixel was clipping the dark areas, and some of those HDR shots looked horrendous and artificial, like this one: 3:32.

Jose T It was a bit better with small movements but struggled with fast and big movements. But the main reason optical image stabilization is better is for photos. Digital image stabilization only works for videos.

Nobody seems to be getting this comparison, because many are like "the Pixels camera is so much better. iPhone camera sucks." Lets make something clear: Both have amazing cameras and shoot great photos and videos and with none of them you'd be disappointed when it comes to camera.
This test showed snapshots, so just holding up the camera and taking the picture. So what happens is that the image processor takes all the RAW data, makes adjustment and compresses it to a JPEG. And in this case I have to say, in most cases I preferred the results of the Pixel over the ones of the iPhone. Not in all cases though.
So things like colors, saturation, contrast, brightness, blacks and whites, and so on, are software related... camera brings the data and software compresses it to a JPEG with some adjustments. Of course the data coming from the actual camera matters, but you can't see that when comparing photos in this way.
So basically it's about preference if you like one over the other when it comes to the final processed JPEG. Now...
Some cases really showed that it wasn't just the process which made the image look better, but the camera itself really performed better in the Pixel in these few cases. So yes, in some cases the Pixel camera is better then the iPhone camera. BUT you have to keep in mind that these are minor differences and you're comparing two great cameras... compare these two to other smartphones and you would see how close together the iPhone 7 and Pixel actually are.
So only looking at the actual camera performance, just to mention a few points: The Pixel has better dynamic range in most cases. The iPhone on the other hand catches more details in lowlight, due to Optical image stabilization (lower shutter speed means lower ISO, which is great).
So none of the cameras here "suck", like many are saying about the iPhones camera. Actually both cameras are impressive. When comparing this phones overall, the camera isn't an aspect where you would prefer one phone over the other because like i said both are amazing and have their strengths and when one is better in a case, the difference isn't too big.
Like i mentioned before, these are snapshots compressed to a JPEG. When you would shoot RAW (like I do, as a photographer) you would have all RAW data available to adjust the photo to your likes and get the most out of it. So if we would compare these cameras by shooting RAW and getting the most out of them, we could really see how the cameras itself perform. But of course I know, that doesn't matter for most people, because they don't shoot RAW and edit photos... I just wanted to mention it, because that is the way you get the most out of a camera instead of letting the software decide for you. So yeah actually importance in smartphones isn't the camera itself but how well the image gets processed. Both do a great job there.
Finally, the iPhone 7 Plus has a second, telephoto, lens. This doesn't just give you the ability to zoom (in good light) but also to get another perspective which is great for portraits and such. Telephoto compresses the background more, which gives the image another perspective. So in some cases I would stand further away and zoom in, to get the image i want. This feature for me is more important than getting slightly better dynamic range and whatever. But really if you don't understand much about photography, this second lens really isn't gonna do more than just zoom, which isn't really that necessary for most people.

But this video is about smartphone cameras and many judge that the iPhone (at least the camera of it) sucks based on what he said and showed in this video. So I wanted to make things a bit clearer. And I do in fact use my iPhone a lot for photography, even though i have a camera. So even for me the camera in my smartphone matters a lot because it is great.

A prove that the iPhone 7 camera is great is all the photographers opinion about it. They're impressed. One photographer used the iPhone and only his iPhone for his trip to Berlin, took lots of photos and edited them at home. The results are stunning. They also show that it isn't about the gear, but about the photographer! So people out there who think they are going to take better photos because it camera is slightly better or even think their photos are going to be better with the Pixel than the iPhone just because of this video... they're totally wrong.

Honestly I don't really get why everyone says that the pixel is way better! Yes the front facing camera is a lot better but the rear camera really only looks better when you need to use hdr! For video I'd still prefer the more natural look of the iPhone, Low light is better on the iPhone, the flash is better on the pixel and the rest comes down to personal preference!
