If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or earlier models, here’s how to improve the tone of your photos: There’s a Tone slider on the 13 Pro (and likely on the 15 Pro as well). Before you take a picture, swipe up in the Camera app. Tap the icon with three overlapping pages. I recommend sliding the Tone control to the left and slightly increasing the warmth before snapping a photo. I also reduce the exposure by -0.7. This combination noticeably enhances the look of iPhone photos. As a professional photo retoucher, accuracy and staying true to life is key for me, and these adjustments make a big difference! I hope this helps someone out there, so many models and photographers on set ask me why my iPhone photos are better looking than theres and this is how.
The best part about the review is that its convinced me to cancel my 16 Pro order. I originally was justifying it by saying I want to move away from the Pro Max size, but I really can't justify the cost on that alone, and there's nothing I do, that the 16 Pro can do that the 15 Pro can't. So I guess it's just another year of a stupidly big phone and me getting frustrated that Apple doesn't do much to make big iPhones the better experience.

Taking pictures on a smart phone got so good and ubiquitous that companies are struggling to keep improving the pictures just for the sake of growth. In reality they are now actually just getting worse.
They have been getting worse for like 6-7 years now. It's not just worse, but basically a robbery, because underlying hardware is only getting miniscule upgrades, but there's no reduction of price, in fact there is increase in price. And all of that bullshitery is so ridiculous, that even a cheap 1" sensor camera still takes better pictures and they used cost next to nothing. They don't even put big sensors or anything and really all smartphone camera is is just CMOS chip with very basic lenses and maybe OIS. All in all those chips are tiny and cheap, lenses are basically glass with some coating. At least with this iteration there are going to be seemingly major upgrades to look forward to without having to buy a new phone to experience them. I think that might be a deliberate feature.

I feel that many reviewers are missing the point by focusing solely on the AI and iOS when reviewing the iPhone 16s. The reviews seem biased and fail to consider that the AI and iOS updates will also be available for the iPhone 15 Pros. In addition, they overlook the staggered software updates from companies like Samsung and Google. Given the mature smartphone market and the 4-5 year upgrade cycle, it's unrealistic to expect revolutionary changes every year. Instead, staged release of software-ready features and iterative hardware upgrades are becoming the norm. Honestly, such a great review! Putting the emphasis on Apple’s image color science, which has recently been so aggressive (in a negative way) was great!
I don't care about the Camera Control button. We didn't need another button. The traditional way of using the camera has worked fine for over 10 years.
@@ferenc-x7p Same here. The ONLY function that I would attach to the Action button is the mute switch because that is most likely what I need in places where silence is critical. This is why the Action button wasn't conceived in previous smartphones.
Great review! I just noticed that all reviews that I saw were only about the camera. I remember when the iPhone 4 came out, it’s more about the phone itself, like the screen resolution, front facing camera, and especially a new design.
This has got to be the more informative review of all. Most reviews stick to reading the spec sheet and almost sound like an other Apple presentation listing out the new features. Thanks for focusing on what actually changed and leaving the incremental updates to a minimum time.
Somehow, this was my first time including The Verge in my set of new iPhone review videos. Man, this was outstanding on every level. Not sure how I missed these before.
Thank you so much for this review. We picked up our 16 Pros today and they are still in the box. Where they will stay as after watching the video we have decided to return them tomorrow. We have 14 Pros and I can’t see any advantage offered by the 16Pros, especially as the camera doesn’t seem to be a significant improvement. We travel a lot and use our phones as our cameras but we don’t want to have to spend a lot of time adjusting pictures to make sure the photo depicts what we experienced. We are more than happy with the camera performance of our 14Pros and recently replaced the batteries so there is no compelling reason to upgrade. The interesting thing is that we budgeted to replace our phones (14Pros) our watches (Series 8) and our iPod Pros 2. Now we aren’t replacing any of them…
Like reviewers has said , it’s about longevity I never use Android so I can’t speak for them but it seems Apple products now Always have amazing battery life at the beginning ( makes sense ) and then lose health faster and faster with each iteration I’m no battery experts and understand battery do degrade but I do wish Apple , with their money , can focus on battery RD everything is progressing in the tech world except batteries tech /industry which now , isn’t much different than 10 years ago and had to rely on software to preserve battery degrading
@@andyH_England Who has reviewed and compared them in real life scenarios? Mind sharing a link or a hint? I would be interested to see the actual battery life difference between regular 16 and 16 Pro version. Don't really care about Plus and Pro Max.
Thank you for keeping it real, Verge. I'll be canceling my preorder since the one thing I wanted to see improvement on (camera) has close to zero changes. Apple is becoming far too complacent and their lack of innovation is really starting to become noticeable. Honestly considering switching to an Honor V3 Global since iOS has RCS support now... at least that phone is exciting and has top tier hardware that blows the iPhone away.
I saw Ben's Gadget Reviews camera take, and he says the exact opposite. He says that many of the new features make video and photography on the iPhone superior to rivals. I am not saying it is a massive camera upgrade, but compared to the Pixel 9 and S24U, it is clearly a more significant upgrade, but I suppose not being made by Apple discounts them from the same review standard.
I have seen some gaming tests, and the thermals alone are a good reason to upgrade from older iPhones, although the battery life may turn out to be what persuades many.
Kinda sad people don’t acknowledge the lack of price increases for nearly a decade. Compare the value you’re getting in a 16 Pro vs X, even at the same price. (Not even adjusted for inflation, which makes the 16 Pro technically cheaper.)
I just checked, and inflation has risen 28.43% since 2017, which is when the iPhone X launched. It's great that Apple's prices haven't risen to keep pace with inflation.

Love when they bring out Nilay for the reviews
As always, awesome job reviewing the iPhone 16 pro max, keep up the great work, Nilay.
Will keep my 13 Pro until it gives up on working. I strongly believe Apple made a mistake with the 13 Pros, they are so perfect there's no reason to upgrade. Maybe 17's will have that reason, we'll see.
Any similar to 14?
Thank you for sharing, it's helpful. 🙏🏽
Did you copy the words of MKBHD in the intro @0:35?
I love Marques but that’s been our rule since 2010, when I first published it in a review of the Logitech Revue on Engadget. ;)
@@reckless1280 i believe you! Marques is the thieve, i am going to confront him some day.
Honestly, such a great review! Putting the emphasis on Apple’s image color science, which has recently been so aggressive (in a negative way) was great!
Can we get Vjeran to write an article to share the “film” recipes he’s cooked up?
THE FIRST REVIEW OMG THANK YOU VERGE CAST!!!
This should be called the “IPhone 12S 4”
This is the most extraordinary review I have seen about camera settings. Thank you!
I don't care about the Camera Control button. We didn't need another button. The traditional way of using the camera has worked fine for over 10 years.
I also don't care about the "action" button. My 13 pro has the silence toggle- button, which I don't feel like giving up for the action button.
@@ferenc-x7p Same here. The ONLY function that I would attach to the Action button is the mute switch because that is most likely what I need in places where silence is critical. This is why the Action button wasn't conceived in previous smartphones.
This is the only guy that comes toe to toe with Marques. Hats off to Nilay.🔥
This phone is not meant for people with the 14 or 15 Pros to upgrade. Y'all in the comments are weird AF upgrading every year.
I will be upgrading from a 12 Pro to a 16 Pro so this will be massive no doubt
upgraded same way and it's nothing special
HUGE 🎉
Great review! I just noticed that all reviews that I saw were only about the camera. I remember when the iPhone 4 came out, it’s more about the phone itself, like the screen resolution, front facing camera, and especially a new design.
This has got to be the more informative review of all. Most reviews stick to reading the spec sheet and almost sound like an other Apple presentation listing out the new features. Thanks for focusing on what actually changed and leaving the incremental updates to a minimum time.
The tone mapping looks sick
Shoutout to the San Genaro fest making it into this review!
Somehow, this was my first time including The Verge in my set of new iPhone review videos. Man, this was outstanding on every level. Not sure how I missed these before.
The camera, the battery, the bigger screen.
Now we aren’t replacing any of them…
I currently have an iPhone 12 Pro. I am seriously considering "upgrading" to a refurbished 14 Pro, rather than a 16 anything.
HDR was the worst thing to happen to mobile photography. Old iphones take way better photos.
It was cool to have the different personalities in one video with the different areas of the phone. Lots of great info. Thanks!
17:37 So true! Rounded square to circle is a bit of a shift especially after 7-8 years.
Nilay's reviews are so good every time
Great review. Straight to the point, going deep into camera details.
See you next year, Nilay!
Only one reason to upgrade: massive battery life! Make battery Life great again 👍🏿
There are not even reviews out for battery life. And even if its 10% better IRL just grab a charger for 15min and you can save your upgrade
Like reviewers has said , it’s about longevity
I never use Android so I can’t speak for them but it seems Apple products now
Always have amazing battery life at the beginning ( makes sense ) and then lose health faster and faster with each iteration
I’m no battery experts and understand battery do degrade but I do wish Apple , with their money , can focus on battery RD
everything is progressing in the tech world except batteries tech /industry
which now , isn’t much different than 10 years ago
and had to rely on software to preserve battery degrading
Early battery numbers suggest a massive upgrade pushing it well clear of the S24U and Pixel 9 Pro XL, maybe 2-3 hours, though less on some tasks.
@@andyH_England Who has reviewed and compared them in real life scenarios? Mind sharing a link or a hint?
I would be interested to see the actual battery life difference between regular 16 and 16 Pro version. Don't really care about Plus and Pro Max.
best review so far. seems like the first honest one.
Best overview so far, great work 👍
18:44 Have I heard it right? Charged at 25W wireless, and it didn't even get warm?
Yep! Pretty good.
I have seen some gaming tests, and the thermals alone are a good reason to upgrade from older iPhones, although the battery life may turn out to be what persuades many.
This is the best review of these phones so far. Good job!
It's great that Apple's prices haven't risen to keep pace with inflation.
iPhones are cheaper? Well that's new 😆
@@levihambrick that means, if sold in 2017, the iPhone 16 Pro would've cost $720.
@@kishorrit in the US atleast not in india, here everyting is expensive.
Maybe the price should stay the same because the phones have stayed the same
