A KEY Skill and Drill for Improving Your Sparring | Self-Defense

  • So you suck at sparring... well that's ok -- so do a lot of us. It can take years to feel comfortable throwing hands. In this video we'll go over a skill/drill that I've found very helpful to improve sparring ability and transform you from the dish being hit to the disher of hits.
    Let's be honest, in the self-defense community there are a lot of people that just aren't that great at sparring. It can be a huge wake up call when you spar against a Muay Thai or MMA guy/gal for the first time. Well, it's time to start sparring and get over your fears and start making your sparring sessions worthwhile. While sparring itself is the best way to get better at sparring, there are tons of drills you can do before sparring to feel more comfortable when it's time to go face to face with another human. Try this drill in this video and start applying the skill as soon as possible. Let me know your results!

    Great advice here, coach! Reminds me of Damien Trainor's school of thought -- practice combos with 7-9 strikes, so in a fight/sparring you throw 3-5. Keep up the great content!

    Sparing has been a part of all martial art I've trained, Kung Fu (in a somewhat limited capacity without low kicks and grappling for the most part, although I implemented this in sparring after class), Krav Maga (multiple opponents, with rubber knives, surprsie drills involving sparring) and MMA for a little while. Your striking looks good, would be fun to be able to spar, too bad I'm all the way in Denmark. Haven't sparred since December due to covid lockdowns, really miss it.
